HappyBirthday, America! Here in the Mid South, we are knee deep in barbeque, the noun, and cook outs, the verb. In the South, we take offense to those being confused. When we cook out, it is sometimes steak, burgers or even chicken; but when we barbeque, whether chicken, pork or shrimp, it is done with lots of spice and a sauce.

This month includes Independence Day, and no July 4th celebration in our family is complete without watching Joey Chestnut consume massive amounts of hot dogs. It’s such a gross act but we can’t turn away and we usually crave a hot dog afterwards. Go figure!

Both the homes in this issue have a dear space in my heart. The featured home belongs to a precious little girl and, of course, her parents, who happen to be wonderful family friends. Pearse and our son grew up together, and Kyra is a wonderful designer whose creations are as lovely as she is. We are so happy to have them back in the Mid South.

The St. Jude Dream Home is so special to many of us, and to me in particular because God and St. Jude are the reason my sweet niece is alive today. She was diagnosed at just two years old with AML and fought a long, hard battle that ended in a tremendous victory. Thanks to generous donors, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has been able to improve the survival rates of children with cancers and other catastrophic diseases worldwide. And patients’ families never receive a bill. I think St. Jude should be the Eighth Wonder of the World.

That same little two-year-old who fought so hard just graduated from college and is studying to take the MCAT in hopes to attend medical school. With her drive and determination, she kicked cancer and there is no doubt she will kick the MCAT and make a fantastic physician one day. We are so proud of you, Julia Elizabeth!!!

Grab some barbeque, a root beer float and enjoy our July issue. If you can, take a moment for a quick “thank you” to the donors, medical and research team, and all who make St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital possible.

A Very Happy Medium

STORY BY TERRI GLAZER | DESIGN BY ELLIOT & LEE INTERIORS
STYLING BY LINDA JOHNSON | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNABELLA CHARLES

Wheninterior designer Kyra Deaton and her husband moved to town and bought a house in 2023, she knew they wouldn’t live there forever. She also knew she wanted to make it uniquely theirs. She accomplished that in a very short time, creating a beautifully curated and comfortable home suited perfectly to her young family.

Nestled on a charming street near the University of Memphis, the house had received a few updates when they purchased it from friends, but retained its original character. Deaton says that fact, coupled with the appeal of the neighborhood, made the decision to buy easy. “All the houses are so great and the neighbors are really nice. It’s a good combination of new homeowners like us and people who have retired or wanted to downsize.”

When working with clients of her residential design firm, Elliot & Lee Interiors, Deaton typically creates full-scope projects that involve major changes throughout and custom features. She sought more of a happy medium in her own home’s renovation. “We knew there were some things that we wanted to do, but we also recognized that we

were only going to be here a few years. I think that’s important for people to consider when they think about design. We found ways to customize without breaking the bank or out-pricing the neighborhood.”

To that end, they decided to leave the home’s living room essentially as they found it. “The fireplace was already here, the built-ins were already here, and it was already painted white, so that was easy. I considered retiling the fireplace, but I really like the tile and it works, so we kept it. We only had to furnish this room,” Deaton says.

The majority of those furnishings, furniture- and accessory-wise, came from New Orleans, where Deaton and her husband Pearse lived before moving back to his hometown. A roll arm sofa speaks to the traditional brick home’s aesthetic and provides comfortable seating that’s also practical. Says Deaton, “It’s Mark Sikes for Chaddock—benchmade in North Carolina—and the upholstery is performance, so it’ll last forever.” A smart choice considering it’s used daily by the couple, their toddler daughter and the family’s Great Dane, Henry. A self-described “textile junkie,” the designer indulged her affinity for patterned and colorful fabrics here and in every room of the home.

Ditto

for her love of art. Works of all shapes, sizes and styles fill the walls, creating a look that’s diverse yet intentional. Collecting comes naturally, says the Atlanta native. “Both of my parents are very design oriented. My mom’s a great stylist. She’s really good at finding the cool, vintage pieces. My dad’s always been an art collector, always been very into furniture. I’ve always been surrounded by quality, great pieces in our homes. Even if it came from a thrift store, it just always felt special. So I think I’ve just carried that into all of my spaces.”

A grand-scale Alexis Walter watercolor fills the wall opposite the front door. Deaton came to know the artist when she worked for New Orleans designer Rivers Spencer. “I was in [Walter’s] studio one day and found it rolled up in a corner. She gifted it to me and we had it framed. It looked perfect in our house in New Orleans that had 12-foot ceilings.” More original art, an assortment of vintage and recent works mostly by Southern artists, forms a gallery wall in the living room. Deaton anchored the montage around a brushed gold wall mirror. Symmetrical layout brings a sense of order to the diverse grouping.

A wide, arched opening, original to the home, separates the living room from the dining room. Here, the designer opted to make more substantial changes. She envisioned the space serving a double purpose, with seating for meals and as a walk-through to the kitchen. To achieve that goal she moved the overhead fixture to one side. A new Visual Comfort chandelier now hangs over the cozy dining space by a window. Old meets new, as a modern tulip table works perfectly with vintage ladder-back chairs and a banquette bench upholstered in a Nicholas Herbert trellis print.

The antique pine secretary desk across the room has been in the family for as long as Deaton can remember. When her parents offered it, she jumped at the chance to have it in her home. It now holds part of her collection of oyster plates, annual gifts from her mother. “Eventually I want to have enough to hang all over the walls of a kitchen,” she explains. For now, they look right at home against the original bright pink color on the back wall of the hutch.

Wherea full wall with a door used to separate the dining room from the kitchen, a larger arched opening now mirrors the one across the room. The new layout created free flow through the area while allowing each space to remain defined, an architectural feature Deaton favors. “I feel like that’s kind of where things are going now; not so open concept,” she says. “It allows you to do fun things with paint and wallpaper, but you don’t feel like you have to do it everywhere.”

The kitchen underwent the most drastic change of any room in the house, but not the complete redo often mounted in older homes. Again, working with the goal of achieving a happy medium, Deaton kept the basic footprint the same. New cabinetry from Woodstone Cabinetry, a Georgia manufacturer specializing in high-quality, ready-to-assemble units, fit the bill and the budget. “Because of how the kitchen is laid out, everything was a standard size cabinet, so I didn't really have to do anything custom,” says Deaton.

She opted for white, but not all white. Her love for greens, blues, and beautiful textiles led to a unique door treatment on the wall cabinets: glass-front doors dressed up with classic Brunschwig & Fils Rayure Fleurie fabric. She acquired the textile before a move to Memphis was even discussed, and held onto it, knowing its perfect place would materialize one day. “It became sort of the jumping off point for everything in the house,” she says. “I love blues and greens, and it also has browns and natural tones. We’re surrounded by a ton of trees and greenery all down this street, so it was nice to bring the outside in.”

The fabric’s blue tones reappear on the wall tile that extends to the kitchen ceiling. Black countertops on the base cabinets and island bring a note of formality and tradition. With the beauty of soapstone, the leathered Negresco granite Deaton chose costs a fraction of the price and is practically indestructible.

Deaton

was expecting when the home project started, and once she found out the baby was a girl, she went all in on an adorable pink nursery. Colefax and Fowler’s Wendle wallpaper gives the walls panache and pairs nicely with pretty pink and purple flowers on the window’s Nicholas Herbert Roman shade. Baby Deaton will grow up surrounded by art, just as her mother did. From the set of Gina Langford botanicals above the crib to the Alexis Walter originals over the sweet pink dresser, the nursery shows that it’s never too early to expose children to beauty. Whimsy is also in full supply thanks to an assortment of vintage and new accessories from sources as diverse as Etsy, Anthropologie and Palladio Home & Garden.

The primary bedroom’s design is peaceful, centered on a soft blue-and-white color palette. Deaton repeated the upholstered headboard’s Schumacher fabric on the bedskirt to create continuity and topped the bed with crisp white linens. Subdued floral shams from English textile house Bennison add pattern and interest. Sourced from 1stdibs.com, a pair of antique Swedish chests provide beauty as well as storage, a sought-after commodity in many older homes. Vintage lamps and mirrors on the nightstands, along with white linen drapes accented with Colefax and Fowler tassel trim, and a custom rug in a neutral diamond pattern complete the look.

“I’m a full believer in buying what you love and knowing it will find a place eventually,” says Deaton. From front door to back, floor to ceiling, her charmingly curated home is a testament to the idea that beautiful things of all ages and styles can coexist perfectly, and without breaking the bank. There’s nothing mediocre about this happy medium.

ALL THE BELLS & WHISTLES

DESIGN BY WAREHOUSE 67 | BUILT BY SOUTHERN SERENITY HOMES

STORY BY TERRI GLAZER | PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNABELLA CHARLES

"Thishouse was so much fun to create,” says Kim Loudenbeck, owner of Warehouse 67. “We’re so grateful for the wonderful partnerships St. Jude has with the Dream Home Giveaway national sponsors, who gave us access to all their products. That is such a blessing—to be able to just design without limitations. We used the best of the best!”

Cassy Hunt of Warehouse 67 took the creative reins again this year on the St. Jude Dream Home, which was given away to a very lucky winner last month. This year marks the fourth time Warehouse 67 has teamed with builder Southern Serenity Homes to construct a gem of a house as a labor of love to support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Nestled in Arlington’s Manor at Hall Creek neighborhood, the house comes chock full of the latest design elements and premium features usually found only in the most upscale homes. Although Loudenbeck describes the layout as “fairly traditional,” the extra elements set it apart. “I love how the house reveals itself to you. Every time you turn a corner, there’s something beautiful to look at,” she says.

The appeal is evident from the exterior. The designer explains, “Painted brick is definitely popular these days. We wanted to pick a warm white and mix it with stained beams and shutters. That creates such beautiful contrast on the front elevation of the home. It adds layers of texture and dimension.”

Inside, the furnishings lean toward transitional style, but the architecture is classic. Loudenbeck and Southern Serenity owner Greg Bridgers went the extra mile to give every room time-honored character.

Wrapped in elegant wainscoting, the dining room just off the front entry exhibits elevated detail and expert craftsmanship. The designer bathed the walls

in saturated gray/green to play up the cozy charm. The area opens to the living room, where a vaulted ceiling soars. “The transition from a lower ceiling to a vaulted one creates architectural interest, it creates drama,” says Loudenbeck. The vault’s tongue and groove wood, stained in a subtle tone, brings warmth into the space.

The Dream Home “lives larger” than its 3,200 square-foot size, the designer adds, thanks to thoughtful planning. The generous living room, the kitchen and breakfast area into which it flows seamlessly, and the backyard and patio onto which it opens, combine to create a roomy and inviting entertaining space.

Upgrades and extras define the kitchen. From the custom details on the cabinetry to the Brizo pot filler faucet above the Bosch gas range to the builtin gourmet coffee machine, the kitchen is outfitted for a chef. Beauty and function coexist here intentionally. Loudenbeck selected handsome and durable Silestone for the countertops, then punched up the look with a white picket tile backsplash from Shaw and a pop of dreamy blue on the island.

Tucked off the living area, the primary suite is a relaxing and private retreat with a picturesque view of the backyard’s extensive landscaping and waterfall feature. Loudenbeck says she especially loves how the bedroom window’s orientation allows natural light to fill the space. Lighter tones in the furnishings pick up the soft green of the pictureframe molding that dresses up the headboard wall. Suspended from the vaulted ceiling, Kichler’s angular Sycara chandelier gives the room a soft contemporary feel.

The same serene green shade makes a reprise on the adjoining bathroom’s double vanities and fullheight storage cabinet, pairing beautifully with classic marble-look tile and brass-toned fixtures. The freestanding oval soaking tub, separate walkin shower and spacious his-and-her closets—all worthy of a luxury hotel—complete the ultimate owners’ suite.

The team saw to it that the same upgrades and attention to detail also went into the home’s two other bedrooms. Downstairs, a room Loudenbeck designed with a little girl in mind bears the perfect pale pink walls. Feminine bedding with floral accents and drapes in a cheerful green mini print pair to create a spot any young lady would love. Upstairs, the third bedroom has a more masculine feel. The feature wall here is dark wood box molding, and the look is classic and traditional. Loudenbeck filled the room with light, neutral textiles and furniture, accented by handsome dark blues.

Unique, customized spaces upstairs make the Dream Home truly dreamy. The second floor features two separate living areas, one suited to adults and the other perfect for the younger set. “This home gave us the opportunity to create a playroom and a lounge space, as well. So many unique areas to entertain!” says the designer. Outfitted with a wall of cabinets, the deluxe wet bar includes not only a sink, but also a beverage refrigerator and an ice machine, enabling the owners to relax without interruption. No running downstairs to replenish snacks or drinks during the big game. Its spacious layout includes plenty of room for friends and family to gather.

Originally drawn as unfinished space, the kids’ area is an adorable nook and a special feature of the Dream Home. Its most charming element came to be later in the process. Says Loudenbeck, “After the home was framed, I met with Greg and we realized we could create this space that has a recessed reading nook area with a day bed over the vault in the living room. We utilized every little niche we had to create this cute spot.” Recessed bookcases and window seats in the dormers take the charm factor up another level. “I can just see someone spending their day playing and coloring and reading in this amazing space,” she adds.

Although the floor plan and design are a homeowner’s dream, the most appealing aspect of the St. Jude Dream Home is the fact that it was built with the generous support of construction professionals and local businesses who donate their time, materials and labor. For over 20 years, Memphians have had the chance to win a beautiful home annually while supporting St. Jude’s mission to advance cures for and prevention of catastrophic childhood diseases through research and treatment. No family ever receives a bill from St. Jude for their child’s treatment, travel, housing or food.

“From start to finish, from downstairs to upstairs, you see character and charm and warmth and coziness. That's what I really love about this house. It’s the right space in the right place.”

Kim Loudenbeck

The St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway is near and dear to Memphian Dr. Susan Aguillard’s heart. The retired pediatrician’s late father, Dr. Donald Mack, started the Dream Home Givewaway in 1991 in Shreveport, LA. Dr. Mack, also a pediatrician, received a call from a friend who had a prefab home. “He asked my father his ideas about doing something with that home for a charity,” says Aguillard. At the time, my father was a member of the ALSAC/St. Jude Board of Governors and Directors, and he thought of the idea to raffle it for a St. Jude fundraiser.” Since then, the Dream Home Giveaway has expanded nationwide to more than 40 locations, given away almost 600 houses, and raised $514 million for St. Jude, the world’s premier pediatric cancer research center.

Working with the project is rewarding for Aguillard. “I meet the most incredible, generous people from all walks of life. I am always amazed by the number of people who give their hearts and souls to make this event a success.” Aguillard, who is now an Emeritus member of the ALSAC/ St. Jude board, is proud that the funds raised further the hospital’s mission. “I love sharing the huge strides St. Jude has made in the treatment and cure of childhood catastrophic diseases. Their accomplishments are second to none and they share freely across the US and around the world.”

HEALTHY SPINE, HAPPY LIFE:

A Neurosurgeon’s Guide to Spine-Smart Living

During every doctor visit, we’re reminded to take better care of our bodies to achieve longevity and maintain mobility. Dr. Michael LaBagnara practices what he preaches. As a spinefocused neurosurgeon at Semmes Murphey Clinic, Dr. LaBagnara has a front-row seat to how an active lifestyle impacts long-term spine health. He and his wife make healthy habits a priority for the whole family, including their two children.

“Your spine is the body’s hub that keeps you doing the activities you love,” he says. “Maintaining bone and muscle health and core strength takes stress off the joints and discs of the spine. A healthy spine slows the rate of spinal degeneration as we age. It also decreases the need for spinal surgery, which is common among older individuals. Injuries happen and surgery can be unavoidable, but people who live active lifestyles often recover faster from surgery and are able to return to their everyday routines much sooner.”

The LaBagnaras’ house provides ample opportunities to keep the family of four moving. Dr. LaBagnara enjoys getting his cardio workouts by swimming laps in his backyard pool. He prefers

swimming over running as it has a lower impact on his spine and knees, especially after being on his feet all day while seeing patients or performing surgery. His five-year-old daughter and seven-year-old son learned how to swim at an early age, and they spend summer days together in the pool while his wife practices yoga on the hardscape areas close by.

Staying active with his family is what motivates Dr. LaBagnara to prioritize his health and maintain a strong spine. He makes lasting memories alongside his wife and children at the pool, in the kitchen, or in their neighborhood, instead of sitting on the sidelines watching them do the activities he loves. Neighbors often see the family traversing their subdivision with the children on their bicycles and him walking alongside.

Staying active looks different for everyone—but Dr. LaBagnara’s tips offer a simple, practical foundation for anyone looking to support a healthier spine and a more mobile future:

Move a little every day: Even light movement makes a difference. A daily walk can go a long way in supporting spine health and overall well-being.

Choose low-impact activities: Swimming, biking and walking are excellent ways to stay active without putting extra strain on the spine and joints.

Stand up and stretch often: Avoid long stretches of sitting. Set reminders to stand up, stretch or walk for a few minutes every hour—especially if you work at a desk.

Make movement social: Involve your family or a friend. Go for a walk together, take a bike ride, or try a fitness class—staying consistent is easier when an activity is shared.

Find joy in movement: Exercise doesn’t have to feel like a chore. Try different activities until you find one that feels good to your body and lifts your mood.

Fuel your body wisely: A balanced diet of whole foods—especially vegetables, fruits, lean protein, and healthy fats—gives your spine and muscles what they need to stay

strong.

Plan ahead for success: Prepping meals or setting out walking shoes the night before helps make healthy choices feel effortless instead of overwhelming.

Start small, stay steady: You don’t need a perfect routine, just a consistent one. Small steps, repeated daily, lead to big changes over time.

Says Dr. LaBagnara, “When people face injury, especially in their spine, they cannot participate in the activities that bring them joy. I’ve met rugby players, musicians, chefs and parents like me whose lives are hindered by their spine health. I enjoy working with these patients because we share the same goal, which is to get them back—pardon the pun—to doing what they love.”

Balanced Hormones = Balanced Life

This article is not a substitute for medical advice. Please consult a qualified physician to understand your body’s needs and determine a plan that supports your unique biology.

Over the past decade, the conversation around hormone replacement therapy (HRT) has evolved—expanding beyond gender and beyond synthetic pharmaceuticals. We now have a more informed and holistic understanding of hormones and the vital role they play in both mental and physical health.

My personal journey with HRT began at age 47, when my testosterone levels dropped significantly. Note: I am a female, and testosterone—not estrogen—was the first hormone I needed to replace. In fact, I didn’t begin estrogen and progesterone therapy until I was 52.

I’ve always had naturally higher levels of testosterone, something reflected in both my lab work and body composition. I believe strongly in listening to your own body, not just following a standard protocol, because what’s “normal” for one person may be completely different for someone else. Bioindividuality means honoring the unique biological needs of your body—even when it doesn’t match the averages or the textbook.

Understanding hormones and the vital role they play in your everyday life is important and has a significant impact on your overall well-being.

WHAT ARE HORMONES?

Hormones are chemical messengers released by cells and carried through the bloodstream. They influence nearly every aspect of how we live—how we feel, think, grow, rest, and function.

Hormones affect:

• Body gro wth and development

• Mood an d mental clarity

• Ener gy and sleep cycles

• Bone d ensity and muscle mass

• Org an function and immunity

• Rep roductive health and sexual function …and so much more.

Some say hormones are like the CEO of the body— directing operations across every system. Others compare them to radio transmitters, sending signals only certain cells are "tuned" to receive. Either way, hormones are constantly adjusting in response to your life stage and environment.

And just like any form of communication, their effectiveness depends on how well your body is nourished, rested, supported, and cared for.

HOW HORMONES WORK: A QUICK PRIMER

The pituitary gland—a small, bean-sized gland at the base of your brain—acts like a command center. It regulates hormone release by monitoring levels in the body and sending signals to the endocrine system.

The endocrine system operates on a feedback loop:

• Hormone-pr oducing glands such as the thyroid, adrenal glands, ovaries/testes, and pancreas send information to the pituitary.

• The p ituitary evaluates the levels and sends instructions back, adjusting as needed.

For example:

If the thyroid isn’t producing enough T3 or T4, the pituitary responds by releasing TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) to encourage more production.

Take a moment to reflect on that: your body is constantly checking in with itself—adjusting, responding, adapting.

KEY PLAYERS IN THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

Here’s a quick look at the major hormoneproducing glands and their roles:

THYROID

Receives TSH from the pituitary and produces T3 and T4. These hormones influence your metabolism, energy levels, and weight regulation.

ADRENAL GLANDS

Receive ACTH from the pituitary and produce:

• Cortisone – Red uces inflammation and helps fight infection

• Adr enaline – Increases heart rate and blood pressure in response to stress

• Estr ogen & Testosterone – Produced in small amounts; under chronic stress, the adrenal glands may release more than needed

OVARIES / TESTES

Receive FSH and LH from the pituitary.

• Ovaries – P roduce three types of estrogen: estrone, estradiol (the primary one), and estriol. They also produce progesterone and some testosterone.

• Tes tes – Primarily produce testosterone, which is also produced in smaller amounts by ovaries. Testosterone supports muscle tone, energy, mood, and mental clarity in all genders.

PANCREAS

A major endocrine organ that regulates blood sugar through insulin and glucagon. It operates with its own feedback system and plays a crucial role in energy balance.

WHY HORMONE BALANCE MATTERS

When hormones are out of balance, it’s not just physical—it affects everything. You may feel disconnected, foggy, inflamed, fatigued, or just “off,” without a clear reason.

Common symptoms of imbalance include:

• Mood s wings or irritability

• Muscle loss an d low energy

• Tr ouble sleeping or concentrating

• Weigh t gain or difficulty losing weight

• Low libido or mens trual irregularities

The earlier you begin to understand your body’s unique patterns, the more empowered you are to have meaningful conversations with your provider and advocate for the support you need.

HOW TO CHECK YOUR HORMONES

The first step is to ask your provider to run a comprehensive hormone panel.

Even if you feel “fine,” establishing a baseline before menopause or prolonged stress affects your

system can help you recognize when something shifts. I began developing a baseline at around the age of 37 and I wish I had started much sooner.

HONORING BIOINDIVIDUALITY

No two bodies are alike. What works for one person may not work for another. Honoring your body’s specific needs, rhythms, and signals means being curious enough about your hormones to work with an expert to help you understand your labs and establish a plan that works for you. Honoring your bioindividualty means understanding you are unique as are everyone else thus your needs may be very different from your best friend or even your mother’s and theirs may be very different from yours.

When I began the journey, every year during my OB/GYN visit, I would request a hormone panel. At first, my doctor didn’t think it was necessary—but I advocated for it anyway. Interestingly, some doctors still do not think it is necessary, though, they are not the norm. I encourage you to be an advocate for you own needs.

WHAT MATTERS TO ME IN HRT

These are my personal non-negotiables: No liver involvement – I want to protect my organs long term

Bioidentical hormones – These are molecularly identical to what my body produces naturally Hassle-free application – I prefer methods that are straightforward and don’t require constant guesswork or interference with my daily activities

FINAL THOUGHTS

I hope this article gives you some insight for understanding your hormones and how they impact your life. Whether you're considering HRT, curious about your symptoms, or just learning more—start by listening to your body.

Ask questions. Take notes. Advocate for yourself. You are worth the clarity, energy, and strength that come from alignment and hormonal health. If you have questions or want to connect, I welcome your email: mjohns@ transformingwellness.com

Garlic Shrimp & Avocado Crostini

Recipe by Margaret Monger

THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE SUMMERTIME DISHES. IT IS EASY TO MAKE AND YOU CAN EVEN LEAVE THE SHRIMP OUT AND HAVE A SIMPLE VEGETARIAN DISH. THE ADDITION OF FRESH CORN AND BLACK BEANS ADDS EVEN MORE COLOR AND VARIATION. BELOW IS THE WAY I MAKE IT, BUT FEEL FREE TO CHANGE IT UP FOR YOUR TASTE!

(SERVES 12-15 FOR AN APPETIZER)

INGREDIENTS

SLICED AND TOASTED FRENCH BREAD (OR BUY IT AT THE GROCERY ALREADY DONE)

2 LBS. OF PEELED AND DEVEINED LARGE SHRIMP

3-4 AVOCADOS

1 HEAPING TBSP. CHOPPED GARLIC

OLIVE OIL

1 BUNCH CHOPPED CILANTRO JUICE OF 1-2 LIMES

1 CUP CRUMBLED FETA CHEESE

2 SEEDED AND CHOPPED JALAPEÑO PEPPERS

1 CUP CHERRY TOMATOES, CUT IN HALF SALT AND PEPPER TO TASTE

INSTRUCTIONS

IN A SKILLET, ADD A LITTLE OLIVE OIL, SHRIMP AND 1 TBSP. MINCED GARLIC. COOK THE SHRIMP UNTIL JUST DONE—DON’T OVERCOOK! LET SHRIMP COOL, CUT INTO BITE SIZE PIECES AND SET ASIDE. CHOP THE AVOCADOS AND ADD MORE CHOPPED GARLIC TO TASTE. (I USUALLY ADD A COUPLE TEASPOONS MORE.) THEN COMBINE WITH THE CILANTRO, JALAPEÑOS, FETA AND TOMATOES. GENTLY FOLD THE SHRIMP IN AND ADD THE LIME JUICE AND A DRIZZLE OR SO OF OLIVE OIL. ADD SALT AND PEPPER TO TASTE. LET SIT IN THE FRIDGE FOR SEVERAL HOURS. THE LIME JUICE SHOULD KEEP THE AVOCADOS FROM TURNING. PLACE ON TOASTED BREAD ROUNDS JUST BEFORE SERVING. THIS IS ALSO GOOD SERVED WITH CORN CHIPS, BUT I LIKE THE LOOK AND TASTE BETTER WITH THE TOASTED BREAD. THIS DISH IS SO COLORFUL AND PAIRS WELL WITH ANY COOKOUT BEVERAGE, FROM LEMONADE TO MARGARITAS!

HOLLYWOOD FEED: A HOMEGROWN ANIMAL RESCUE PARTNER

Although Memphis-based Hollywood Feed treats its customers and their pets like stars, the company is not named for the glitz and glam of Tinseltown. Rather, this locally grown brand opened its first store in the 1950s on the corner of Hollywood Street and Chelsea Avenue in Memphis. Over 70 years later, the business is still going strong, and supporting the community all along the way.

Hollywood Feed and its “pack” of 1,200 team members help bolster the community by supporting hundreds of rescue partners, sponsoring dozens of dog parks, and donating more than 100,000 pounds of food and other supplies to homeless pets, rescue organizations and shelters annually. Hollywood Feed also provides in-store donation opportunities, hosts

community fundraisers and sponsors seasonal festivals for the benefit of pet-related charities.

“One of our main goals is for all pets in our community to live healthier, longer lives of the highest quality,” says Shawn McGhee, president of Hollywood Feed. “That includes pets who are being cared for in shelters or being fostered as well as those who have been welcomed into loving families permanently. By providing rescue organizations with the food, treats and supplies they need to keep adoptable pets healthy and happy, we increase that pet’s chance of finding its forever home.”

Now with 170 stores across 19 states, Hollywood Feed was named to Newsweek's America's Best Customer Service list for 2024 and is proud to support area rescues in every market it serves.

To help pet lovers stay informed, Hollywood Feed launched Hollywood Feed University, hfu.hollywoodfeed.com, a free pet wellness education series available to pet owners and enthusiasts everywhere. Learn more about Hollywood Feed at hollywoodfeed.com.

Hollywood Feed team members Brian Sutton, Gena Lindsley and Joy Stablein sit atop one of the Memphis-based company’s many donations of pet food to local animal rescue organizations.
