Doing it…. in 2011 Now that we are into a new year, now is the time when we start to work on all our new plans for the coming twelve months. I want to have more weekend breaks with the family this year, start and complete all those household projects that need doing, and to play lots more gigs with my band in as many cities and towns as possible. A simple balance of family and rock n roll, what could be simpler? On the business level, and Farming Scotland Magazine in particular, my aim is to continue increasing the content of the magazine, while finally getting the magazine onto the shelves of rural supermarkets throughout the country. In addition to the independent newsagents, getting Farming Scotland Magazine out there in the rural supermarkets of Scotland is my number one driver for 2011. We all need an ambition, an aim in life, and a target to achieve. Mine are not New Year resolutions – they never last!! 2011 for me is all about ‘making it happen’, not sitting back and waiting for others to make a move. We all need to work hard this year. Do it for yourself. Have a good one. Go for it!

Estimates suggest that some farms could save between 5 to 20% on their annual energy and fuel bills, cutting costs and reducing the business carbon footprint. Taking dairy farming as an example; water heating is just one aspect to consider, as it can make up a significant proportion of the electricity spend. A quick review of current practices could highlight opportunities for carbon, energy and cash savings; these include: • Check water heating timers; power cuts and changing clocks could mean the timer is out of sync with the cheap electricity tariff ( if its out by one hour per day it could cost well over £50, depending on tariff, until the clocks change again). • Check insulation on boilers and pipe work. Poor, damaged or missing insulation, especially if wet, can increase heat loss. Work carried out at
www.farmingscotlandmagazine.com
Stoneleigh’s Farm Energy Centre (FEC) estimated that heating water to 65oC in a 137 litre (30 gallon) tank with no insulation could cost around £240 per year in lost heat (based on 2006 prices); this compares with losses of £60 for the same tank with insulation even where the water is heated to a higher 85oC. • Check your tariff or consider moving to a cheaper electricity supplier. An energy audit could highlight a range of ways to reduce your energy and fuel bills and could be a useful starting point for anyone considering generating energy from renewables. Cutting fuel use could also help to reducing the business carbon footprint. The latest Rollmax range from Rolland France’s largest manufacturer, offers two beater frame options, the C10 EDT twin vertical beater system and TCE wide spread spinning deck system which spreads up to 30m depending on product density. Complimenting this range is Rolland’s V2 traditional spreader with large diameter wheels on the outside of the body for easy towing. This 8 strong range from 7t up to 20t offer 5 different beater frames which are interchangeable on most models, these cover the small farmer up to the punishing hire market where the C13 twin vertical beaters are 22mm thick and dynamically balanced. Rolland have spreading

covered with their two ranges; offering huge volume up to 37 cubic meters with the Rollmax line and a 7 beater frame option which will cope with compost, sludge, poultry manure, straw and liquid as well. Weigh systems are offered on all models which give
customers more traceability and eventually the possibility of charging per ton spread. Please call for a catalogue and information about your local dealer network. Kuhn side exit spreader offers user versatility The 9 cubic metre capacity Pro Twin Slinger manure and slurry spreader from Kuhn Farm Machinery offers great versatility alongside its high output capacity. Key to its functionality is an innovative and patented twin-auger design combined with free-swinging discharge hammers that work against an adjustable deflector. The Pro Twin Slinger moves material rearward with a raised right auger in order to keep the left auger evenly charged to feed the forward-situated discharge hatch. This rotational movement keeps the load level and prevents “bridging”,

whatever the consistency or moisture content of the manure. Additional versatility is afforded by the free-swinging forged-steel discharge hammers, which pulverise the material and propel it in an even and controlled spread pattern. Discharge can be regulated on-the-move with an hydraulically controlled deflector that can adjust the spread width from a 1 metre wide deposit to a 15 metre finely distributed pattern. Externally mounted nylon auger bearings are used in preference to the more traditional roller bearings as they give improved tolerance of overloading and contamination, and are more cost-effective to replace. The drive at the front is a heavy-duty roller chain that runs in oil and has springloaded self-aligning poly tighteners for extended life. Harry West Duel Spreaders Easily the most popular machine in the Harry West product range, and a firm favourite with farmers and contractors alike, the Dual Spreader is capable of handling efficiently most material consistencies. The advanced features of the Dual Spreader were recognised as far back as 1982 when it was awarded the Royal Agricultural Society of England Gold Medal at the Royal Show.

Since then, several thousand have been sold in the UK alone, alongside a programme of continuous development which has kept it ahead of the trends in modern farming. Latest features include a newly developed agitator and larger door to effectively accommodate, with low power requirement, long straw box manure as well as slurry, poultry manure and cow manure direct from the yard. The Dual Spreader is available in a range of three capacity models, each delivering a broad spread width of up to 21m (70ft). Each supplied with an off-side stone trap and road lights fitted as standard. Hi Spec XCEL Spreaders Hi-Spec Engineering was established in 1988 and has built up an enviable reputation for producing extremely reliable and high-quality agricultural machinery. Its products are currently sold at home in Ireland and all across Europe, in Iceland, Russia, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. Hi-Spec products are updated on a continual basis, with the latest technology and innovations being incorporated to ensure efficiency and quality.
The Hi-Spec XCEL 1250 spreader has been used extensively on Irish and UK farms since 2004. As the XCEL 1250 uses chain flails to break up the manure it has a much greater ability to handle foreign objects in the manure (e.g. stones, cement blocks, fencing stakes, etc.) without any damage to the machine compared to competitor’s vertical auger spreading systems. The spreading width of the machine is in excess of 16 metres with most materials and thanks to its unique spreading system, the XCEL can discharge manure evenly across the full working width. The large tyres, which come as standard, practically eliminate any compaction and rutting of the surface. New developments for Keenan Orbital muck spreader Keenan’s new 12T Orbital spreader benefits from some major updates which enable the machine to provide a more even spread of finely shredded material. As a result, the manure is absorbed more quickly into the ground, releasing valuable nutrients to growing crops. This has been achieved by driving the shredding and
Keenan
spreading flywheel, complete with its eight paddles, at a higher speed – 10% faster than before. The alignment of the paddles has also been altered to improve their spreading action. Another major change is the introduction of a 1000 rpm pto input which is designed to make the drive on the gear trains less demanding and reduce the power requirement of the tractor overall.
Reliability, always a feature of Keenan built machinery has been further enhanced through the introduction of an oil bath gearbox to ensure the chain employed to power the spreader’s flywheel is constantly lubricated. The Orbital’s unique action of pushing the manure to the front of the machine so that weight transfer to the rear wheels of the towing tractor is always optimised remains the same.

_hk :`kb\nemnkZe ?Zkf FZ\abg^kr Zg] MkZbe^kl Established in 1984 Nugent Engineering is at the cutting edge of agricultural machinery design with an extensive and flexible range of cattle crushes. As leaders in the field, Nugent Engineering have invested heavily in research and development to bring to market a truly exceptional range of Cattle Handling Equipment, Bale Handling Equipment, Power Boxes, Shear Grabs, Tine Grabs, Power Sweepers, Yard Scrapers and Multi Purpose Trailers. Nugent Engineering has built up a network of authorised dealers in Ireland and the UK and is looking to expand that network in Scotland. Amongst the first firms in Ireland, within their sector, to fully implement the ISO 9001:2000 quality management system, Nugent Engineering now has a dedicated line for bespoke equipment. “We at Nugent’s recognise the importance of listening to our customers, so this is an area we would like to promote as we have the resources in place,” says Shane Nugent, Nugent Engineering MD. The team of design engineers have worked together for years and are driven by the challenge of combining elements such as design appeal, ease of use and quality when designing Nugent products. The Nugent Universal 2100 Crush is a firm favourite with farmers keeping the animal firmly in place without any stress. The four full access gates along with a removal side bar creates maximum room and access to carry out procedures and it lends itself well to other detailed procedures such as caesarean sections. The crush also has adjustable sides, creating 3 different widths of crushes in one which suits 10
large and small livestock and can be easily transported when fitted with a 3 point linkage H frame. David McCaul, from AI Services commented at a recent Limousin Open Day that, “the Universal 2100 crush is a great all rounder, keeping the beast well restrained, offering maximum working area and the adjustable width’s caters for various sizes of stock, which I suppose is why it is aptly named the Universal”. Customers have repeatedly appreciated the quality of Nugent products which is why the Nugent Shear Grab continues to very popular amongst the agricultural
industry. The Nugent Grab, with its unique 36” opening from blade to tine, maximises the volume of silage that can be cut, producing a significantly larger silage block than its competitors. All Nugent Shear Grabs come standard with a serrated blade cutting edge and Kverneland tines, along with 100mm hydraulic cylinders and self lubricated bushings in all pivot points. The Nugent Shear Grab has been designed for a maintenance free long life. The design of the elliptic front and the positioning of the pivot points allow this Shear Grab to produce a high capacity block with significantly less amount
of pressure than its rivals. The 2 metre / 6’ Shear Grab, the largest in the range, has a middle blade to divide the silage block into two equal portions for ease of handling and is suitable for feeder wagons. The popular shear grab range has been complemented with the launch of the Nugent Tine Grab. With a dedicated team of design engineers, Nugent Engineering has designed a heavy duty Tine Grab with first class performance capability and is available in 3’8’’, 4’4” and 5’. The Nugent Tine Grab is designed with cranked tines for easy removal of the block

and comes with bushed 30mm pins. The bottom hollow section is reinforced with 12mm wear plates allowing for extended life span and all movable parts have grease points to ensure longevity. The 5’ Tine Grab has 6 curved tines on top, 9 straight tines on bottom and a straight tine on each side for extra strength. The Nugent range of silage handling equipment also includes an extensive range of Bale Handling equipment. The popular Nugent Multi Purpose Trailer is built with a tipping body, easy lifting drop sides, road legal lights and ADR braked axles. The Nugent Multi Purpose Trailers are available in 2, 4, 6 and 8.5 Tonne models and no matter what size they are built with the same quality, strength and style. Optional extras include grain sides, mesh sides, bale extension and a removable headboard. The MP2 is fitted with low ground pressure turf tyres suitable for golf courses, country parks and lawns and the MP6 & MP8 multi purpose trailers are fitted with 400 flotation tyres. Both the MP2 and MP4 are fitted with a 3mm floor and the MP6 & MP8 have a heavy duty 4mm floor offering additional strength giving a great all round versatile Multi Purpose Trailer, enabling almost any task to be carried out. “We are pleased to extend our product range with a versatile family of multi purpose trailers, giving the farmer more options,” said Shane Nugent, MD of Nugent Engineering.

TRACTORS
The Magnificent Dozen A look into what’s new in Tractors for 2011 with a brief review of many new models coming onto the market New additions to the Puma CVX family Thanks to the huge worldwide success of the Puma CVX, Case IH is now extending this series of tractors with three new models. The Puma 130 CVX has a power rating of 131 hp (171 hp maximum power with Power Management), the Puma 145 CVX has 146 hp (188 hp maximum power with Power Management) and the Puma 160 CVX is rated at 160 hp (203 hp maximum power with Power Management). The exterior appearance of the new Puma CVX series reflects its compact design. The rear section of the hood is now much narrower. As a result the
view of the working area in front of the tractor is further improved. The short wheelbase provides great manoeuvrability and a small turning radius. As a result, the three new Puma CVX models are ideal all-round tractors. The new Puma CVXs are powered by the very latest engine technology. The engine is a 6.7 litre, six-cylinder, common-rail turbo-diesel equipped as standard with Engine Power Management. This system delivers up to 30 hp more power, depending on the situation, increasing performance by up to 22 percent for transport jobs or PTO work, for example.

McCormick T-Max and better spec loaders Farmers viewing the McCormick exhibits on the AgriArgo UK stand at LAMMA 2011 had their first chance to
‘check the spec’ on the latest newcomer to the range – the 92hp T100-Max. They will also saw the latest LiftMaster loader models with additional standard features
for VALTRA Tractors
designed to make them easier to use. The McCormick T100-Max is a fourth option in the McCormick range for farmers wanting a 92hp all-purpose
tractor for loader and general duties on mixed and arable farms, livestock and field vegetable units. With a new transmission and back axle assembly installed, the T100-Max scores over the simpler C100-Max and CX100 LP Synchro in having more transmission speeds, a power shuttle, hydraulic control of the pto and front axle drive engagement. It also has a telescopic pick-up hitch; and while manual control of the implement lift matches the system used on the C100-Max, draft sensing is through the lower links. “The T100-Max comes with a 36x12 speed transmission with power shuttle and threespeed powershift, notes McCormick product specialist, Paul Wade. “It joins the existing C-Max and CX models to give farmers a four-way choice of

92hp tractors in the McCormick range to meet their particular requirements. New John Deere 8R Series tractors Following the introduction of the new 8R Series range of tractors last year, John Deere has announced five newly styled wheeled models from
260 to 360hp, designed to meet European Stage IIIB emissions regulations while maintaining excellent fuel economy. Available from March 2011 in the UK and Ireland, the 8260R, 8285R, 8310R, 8335R and 8360R tractors feature a new fuel efficient PowerTech PSX 9-litre six-
cylinder engine, which provides higher horsepower and torque while utilising field proven technology to meet the new emissions standards. Most other specifications remain the same as on the existing range. For added security, the tractors will be fitted as standard with CESAR Datatag and immobiliser systems, with a unique key. In addition, new models will be supplied with complimentary JDLink Ultimate telematics plus Service ADVISOR remote monitoring and diagnostics systems for the first year, as well as a new, advanced GreenStar 3 CommandCentre cab display. New ActiveCommand Steering (ACS), which won a DLG gold medal at Agritechnica in 2009, will also be optionally available. The new 8R Series tractors each offer an increase of 15hp over existing models, with the potential to add a further 35hp

boost using Intelligent Power Management. Agrofarm TTV 430 Deutz-Fahr has introduced the Agrofarm 430 TTV with a continuously variable transmission, the first time such a transmission has been fitted to a multi-purpose tractor in the 110hp power range. Innovative and featuring a very simple and reliable construction, the new transmission offers all the advantages in terms of precise speed control of the continuously variable transmissions used in high-power tractors. Due to the revolutionary kinematics system, the high efficiency of the transmission is comparable to the level offered by conventional mechanical transmissions. The design of the transmission also enables the tractor to quickly reach speeds of up to 40 km/hr with the engine running at only 1800 rpm which means fuel

consumption is reduced by a significant amount. Tractor speed is controlled by means of a joystick which, when selecting zero speed, may be used to bring the tractor
to a stop without having to apply the brakes. The Agrofarm 430 TTV is powered by an electronically managed Deutz four-cylinder Tier III, turbocharged and

intercooled engine rated at 109hp and 100% compatible with the use of biodiesel fuel (B100). An impressively large 55-degree steering angle provides a high degree of manoeuvrability in all types of field applications, while the continuously variable transmission makes it possible to adjust and control speeds to match operating conditions. New Holland T7 Tier4A SCR T7.260 and T7.270 Fiat Powertrain SCR technology is confirmed as the winning choice to reduce fuel consumption and maximize productivity, while meeting emission regulations. Tier 4 SCR models available from early 2011, bringing today the benefits of tomorrow’s technology. The results officially and definitively confirm New Holland’s record fuel economy achieved thanks to Fiat Powertrain Tier 4 SCR technology. This technology allows the engine to ‘breathe’ clean air, instead of re-circulated exhaust gases. This means the engine simply does what is designed for: producing the maximum power from a given quantity of fuel. “At the start of 2011, our customers will have the widest range of machines with Tier4A SCR technology to choose from in the industry: 20 tractor and five combine harvester models,” declared Franco Fusignani, President and CEO of New Holland Agriculture. “The recently published DLG figures fully confirm our clear leadership, both in terms of productivity and fuel economy.” Challenger ‘C’ Series “The past autumn demonstrates, if any further proof was needed, the distinct advantages to be gained from using the Challenger Mobil-trac system,” says Martin Hamer, National Sales Manager – Challenger. “At the Cereals Event we will also be explaining the four key points that optimise tractor performance. “These include: The track footprint, contour following ability, suspended track frame

and low ground pressure. These are unique Challenger track tractor attributes, which are not available from other machines – fitted with either tracks or wheels, he adds. Challengers feature the longest tracks in the industry that not only create a large footprint to distribute the weight even across a wide area, but also guarantee optimum
traction is achieved. The very low operating ground pressure, as low as 4.5psi, minimises soil damage from compaction and reduces the need for further, deeper cultivations. Moreover, new Extreme Agricultural Belts, proven on B series tractors in the 25in format, are now available throughout the ranges from 25in to 30in to offer users the
best combination of high traction with low running costs. The Claas Axos range With power outputs ranging from 75hp to 102hp, the design and specification options available for the Claas Axos range reflect the diverse operations that these tractors are used for. The Claas Axos range consists of four models - the Axos 310, 320, 330 and 340
– which have power outputs of 75hp, 87hp, 92hp and 102hp respectively. In designing the Axos range, Claas looked at the wide range of tasks that tractors of this size are expected to handle, from field work such as fertiliser spreading or mowing, to trailer work or handling work with a front loader. In addition, markets such as local authorities and specialist vegetable growers also have specific

to the Landini four-cylinder tractor line-up is now available. It is the first Landini tractor of this size to emulate the sixcylinder 7 Series models in providing two power ratings; and the ‘120’ also comes with uprated hydraulics and brakes to match its more capable performance. “The Powermondial has been a very successful addition to the range, providing farmers with a more spacious cabin and higher-spec hydraulics and transmission than we offered previously,” says Landini product specialist Eamon Howden. “The new ‘120’ takes the range a further step forward in terms of power, performance and features.” The Perkins 1104D-E44TA four-cylinder diesel engine at the heart of the new Powermondial 120 has the same 4.4-litre capacity as the 102hp and 110hp models. The MICHELIN
CerexBib Michelin, together with Claas, Europe’s leading combine harvester manufacturer, has developed tyres for the latest generation of farm machinery with the aim of enhancing harvester productivity. The MICHELIN CerexBib incorporates MICHELIN’s Ultraflex technology which provides farmers with a multitude of benefits, including superior soil protection, time saving and a more comfortable ride. The result is that the MICHELIN CerexBib is the only commercially available tyre that can cope with the higher imposed loads at pressures of less than 2 bar (29psi). Thanks to MICHELIN Ultraflex technology, there is a higher rate of deflection than existing tyres, and the MICHELIN CerexBib has a footprint up to 25% bigger than a conventional tyre. The subsequent reduction in soil compaction, together with the MICHELIN CerexBib’s longer footprint widens the harvest window. In addition, the new MICHELIN CerexBib offers a 20% higher load capacity than equivalent sized, conventional tyres for the same pressure and provides more opportunity to keep the machine width within 3.5 metres on the road The MICHELIN Cerexbib will be available to purchase in 2011 and will be launched at the LAMMA 2011 show. For more information please visit us on the MICHELIN stand at LAMMA, or telephone 0845 366 1540 for contact details for your local MICHELIN Account Manager.
The Right Tyre Changes Everything Key Benefits, such as fuel saving, time saving in the field, improved work rates and soil condition are all related and affected by the choice and use of tyres and the correct set-up of machine and tyre fitment is key to maximising these benefits: • Recognise the correlation between tyre pressures and the tractor wheel slip and optimise performance to between 8 and 12% slip. • Optimum traction requires wheels (and tyres) to perform as the vehicle manufacturer designed them with the correct distribution of load and work. • Ensure traction with adequate ballast, correctly distributed for each driven axle • Choose a suitable tractor tyre that can operate correctly for load and torque within its optimum range of 1bar pressure or less” When selecting tyres to give the best performance and value, you should not assume that the standard fitment on equipment and vehicles will be the most suitable for your needs. In fact, in our experience it often is not. So what should you consider when choosing your new tyres? • The principal application for which the tyres will be used; o Primary cultivation: requiring grip and traction, in or out of the furrow o Top work: requiring grip and floatation o Treatment work requiring specific tyre dimensions and low pressures to suit the application o Harvesting; requiring grip on slopes and high load capacity at low ground pressure o Road work; requiring sustained higher speed capability with good comfort, handling and tread life o Yard work: requiring abrasion and damage resistance and high load capacity • The axle and imposed “tyre load” in full operating state; o Tyres with pressures at the top of their range (or beyond their specification) trying to support the required load, will not perform adequately and may even fail. • Operating speeds both at work and in transport mode. • Torque input at wheels and available machine HP. • High traction requirements are usually better served by taller tyres. • High flotation requirements are usually better served by wider tyres with a greater footprint. • “Optimum” tyre pressure for a correctly specified tyre for efficient working / fuel consumption is approximately 1 bar • Ground pressure is approximately the sum of the tyre pressure plus a casing factor (approximately 2 psi for a quality radial construction tyre) • Wheel load is supported by the air inside the tyre; o Tyre internal volume will determine the tyre pressure needed o For a given load, a “higher” volume tyre will require less pressure than a lower volume tyre. o Tyre “type” suitability (casing and tread/lug design – lug for traction or floatation) • Radial tyres provide more even ground pressure and a larger footprint than bias ply The best way to ensure you have the right tyres is to check the manufacturers’ data books for the load/speed rating, or contact the tyre experts – they are there to help.

CASE IH wins Silver medal for their Continuously variable PTO drive for tractors Case IH has developed the world’s first continuously variable PTO transmission for tractors. This innovative system enables infinitely-variable adjustment of PTO speed independently of engine speed, overtaking previously standard fixed PTO speeds. In the field, this means that the PTO speed, and therefore the drive to mounted and trailed equipment, can be adjusted continuously to match the current operating conditions. The system enables PTO speed to be controlled at low engine speed. This leads to significant fuel savings. The new

This expanded role has responsibility for DairyCo’s farmer and industry communications as well as her existing remit for consumer marketing activity. system is designed to ensure that equipment is driven reliably in all operating conditions, such as starting up under load or during an emergency stop. Thanks to the continuously variable PTO transmission, all of the tractor’s systems can work more closely together.
McCormick tackles exhaust emissions
McCormick manufacturer Argo Tractors signals engine pollutants solution Selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides (NOx) cleans exhaust gases Engine combustion can be optimised for power, torque and fuel economy. Argo Tractors, the manufacturer behind the McCormick range, has indicated how it intends tackling the next stage of exhaust emissions rules on its bigger models. The ‘McCormick X70 Autoshift’ exhibited at the recent EIMA agricultural machinery show in Italy is a prototype due 34

to enter production next autumn as a successor to the current TTX. In most respects, it echoes the TTX model’s proven package, which channels economical and responsive power from a 6.7-litre engine through the versatile XtraSpeed semi-powershift transmission. In the X70, a revised version of the TTX tractor’s six-cylinder Betapower engine features selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to remove nitrogen oxides (NOx) from the exhaust gases. New rules that take effect in 2011 require manufacturers to significantly reduce the amount of this pollutant released by diesel engines in off-highway vehicles. The SCR process injects a small amount of AdBlue, a specially-formulated aqueous urea solution, into the catalyst chamber that forms part of the tractor’s exhaust system. Sensors and control electronics manage the system automatically and prevent the engine from running without a supply of AdBlue.

New CLAAS apprentices at Barony The success and support for the CLAAS Agricultural Technician Apprenticeship based at Barony College near Dumfries, continues into its third year with an additional six students joining the scheme this year from the CLAAS dealerships of Rickerby (north England) and Gordons (south west Scotland). CLAAS is the only landbased engineering company to offer a manufacturer’s apprenticeship within Scotland. The Barony course was launched in 2008, in order to provide CLAAS dealers in Scotland and the north of England with the same opportunity as that which southern dealers have to train and develop the skilled technicians they need
for the future, with the course based at Reaseheath College in Cheshire. In addition, it also provides both Reaseheath and Barony with the opportunity to work together to further develop the training and assessment material to mutual advantage. In both cases the students study for a National Diploma in Land Based Technology. This qualification is seen as a practical hands-on alternative to ‘A’ Levels, and one of the main benefits of the Diploma, other than higher technical credibility, is that upon qualification, the successful candidate will receive a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade, which will enable them to better demonstrate and gain recognition for their progression and ability.
Oatridge College: Reaching out to 4,000 Figures released by Oatridge College in West Lothian, one of Scotland’s smaller, specialist centres for vocational education, show that in the last year it has provided tailormade training, knowledge transfer and information to more than 4,000 land-based www.farmingscotlandmagazine.com
businesses, organisations and individuals. The remarkable level of employer engagement is in direct response to a Scottish Government review which identified the key role Scotland’s colleges have in meeting five strategic 37
FUTURE farmer objectives to make the country more successful. During 2010 Oatridge launched a series of innovative projects, some designed to make it easier for employees to learn and gain qualifications, some to better prepare young people for the world of work and others to support businesses to manage change and prepare for expansion and development. These include the introduction of new Modern Apprenticeship schemes for the agriculture and
3DJH 7XUQHU¡V horticulture industries, which will mean a greater emphasis on work-based learning and employees spending less time in the classroom and away from work. The College has also set up a countryside ranger service, which is run by students, when industry liaison groups complained that some people leaving colleges and universities with academic qualifications in countryside and environmental management lacked project management, practical and “people skillsâ€?.
