To talk about the “Kavanaugh Confirmation Caper” one more time seems borderline stupid, but I feel that I must, mostly because I promised that I would. Good night, since then we have had discussions on everything from virtually non-existent first nation DNA in a senator who sports what she thinks are high cheek bones, a murdered journalist in Turkey with accompanying intrigue that could destabilize the Middle East, a Honduran train of people who seem to think that no one should stand in the way of them entering a country illegally via convoy, mid-term election madness, and a pastor freed from a Turkish prison getting the chance to lay hands on President Trump while praying with and for him.

Inarguably, the soap opera that took place in the process of confirming a Supreme Court Justice was so bad, not only for the Kavanaugh family but the nation as a whole, that President Trump did something I have never seen anyone in his position do, and for which I am grateful. This was to offer an apology to the Kavanaugh family on behalf of the American people for a job

interview that unapologetically went for the jugular with the intent of destroying a man personally. For me, that was the most important moment of all: reminding us that in America, according to the 5th, 6th, and 14th Amendments of the Constitution, people are innocent until proven guilty.

Operative word: proven.

I have never seen anything like this. We had a purported victim, who reportedly never wanted to be known in public, receive more than her fifteen minutes in the sun. And while her testimony was heartwrenching, the most that many, including me, could conclude was that something indeed happened to her at some point, but Bret didn’t do it. All of the corroborating statements of the witnesses summoned to testify on her behalf fell apart completely.

Then the smoking gun was going to be the therapist’s notes of the session(s) from 2012 that would prove Bret was the perp. Although this had been dangled as bait, at the last moment her legal team felt it would have been damaging to her personally, so the bait was withdrawn. In yet another example of Professor Ford’s

sketchy memory, she couldn’t recall whether or not she gave the notes to a Washington Post reporter to peruse, and that was just in July of 2018.

Then there was the call for yet another FBI investigation, and it just may be that Bret has had his life examined and reexamined more than anyone this side of the Inquisition.

He passed test after test, to the shrieks and howls of women in the galleries, women in the halls, women in elevators, and in no small part because every woman who has actually known him or worked for him says he is a true gentleman. At times the whole thing made me downright embarrassed to be a woman. My question is, if Bret was the jerk that is claimed by one woman, and then legitimately turned his life around to become the hero of hundreds, wouldn’t the FBI have been able to discover the sequence and scope of that transformation and enlighten us re: Bret’s come-to-Jesus moment?

What far too many people seem to be ignoring is that the Kavanaugh confirmation was something that transcended the tearful testimonies of both Professor Ford and now Su-

preme Court Justice Kavanaugh, because ultimately they were not the ones on trial; the Constitution of the United States was. What was supposed to be only an interview for employment was nearly turned into a criminal trial, and in that context, Justice herself would have had to use her blindfold for a hanky to dry her tears. The day we presume that someone who was not on trial in the first place is guilty of gang rape because he was standing near a punch bowl, or at some point possibly threw some ice, you can stick a fork in us as a culture, ‘cuz we are done. And please remember, I am saying this as a woman who is a survivor of many molestations as well as a terrifying assault wherein I was handcuffed, my finger was broken, and whose scar I still bear on the pinky finger of my right hand. I believe I have earned the right here to speak with firmness.

God bless Susan Collins for her courage to be a womanly voice of wisdom, Bret’s daughters for their willingness to pray for their father’s forgetful accuser, and the legislators who voted their conscience rather than their party. My hope is that we will emerge as a better America as a result of raunch that has been redeemed, at least until November.

I don’t really like getting involved in Congressional races outside of our fair state, but when, from my perspective, the future of our country could very well hang on the November elections, I would feel remiss if I didn’t contrast yet another set of candidates in the off chance that readers in Alabama who love veterans might be interested in helping get a vet re-elected in Arizona. And, at the risk of making this too much about me, when I see someone who is like I used to be vilifying the likes of people like Colonel McSally, all I can say is, “Hold my beer.”

I don’t like beer, but you get catch my drift.

First, let me tell you about Colonel Martha McSally.

She graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1988. She served in Afghanistan and Iraq, and became the first woman Air Force pilot to fly in combat. She became the first woman pilot to command a squadron. She was first in her class at the Air War College. She is a survivor of adolescent sexual manipulation and abuse. She graduated from Harvard’s JFK School of Government with a master’s degree

Colonel Martha McSally in government. She flew A-10 Thunderbolts in the Middle East. She went up against the DOD and successfully made it so that it is no longer required for female officers to have to wear abayas when off base, citing a 1st Amendment basis for her argument. With Saudi being currently once again in the news, the fact that the whole time she was stationed there she was not allowed to drive but piloted an A-10 which served to protect Saudi borders, is more than ironic. During her military career, Rep.

McSally flew 2,600 flight hours, including over 325 combat hours, earning six air medals, including the Bronze Star. Martha is pro-life, a Republican, and an Iron Man Tri-athlete.

Now, here’s her opponent, Kyrsten Sinema.

In 2003, while Martha was fighting the Taliban, Kyrsten was holding a rally in support of our enemies. She even designed the posters.

Kyrsten’s friend and featured speaker at the rally was none other than Lynn Stewart, the lawyer who represented the Blind Sheikh, Omar Abdel Rahman, and Lynn was convicted for passing on notes to terrorists who were part of the Egyptian cell he supervised. Rahman was a former client of Stewart’s who was charged and sentenced to life in the 1990s for plotting to blow up the Unit-

What is most disturbing is that Kyrsten said, “before God and everyone,” that as far as she was concerned, it was okay for Americans to join terrorists to fight against America. Then she had the audacity to say that the McSally campaign took her comments “out of context.” There was a time in my life, many years ago, when I would

have agreed with Ms. Sinema. Since then, I have been given many opportunities to “tape over” those previous episodes, and this is one of them. I am asking you to support COL McSally, but not before you do your due diligence and see if her values line up with yours. She would have it no other way.

Students Present City With Best Bicentennial Birthday Card

by Ali Elizabeth Turner With paint and imagination, students from Athens High School gave the City of Athens a birthday card worthy of a brick wall in Downtown Athens.

Art teacher Beverly Bobo’s students received bicentennial grant money from the State of Alabama. She contacted the Mayor’s Office for ideas.

The result is an ATHENS mural on the corner of Market and Marion streets that celebrates 200 years of the city’s Classic.

Southern. Character. and a historic scavenger hunt that will be held during the Nov. 17 Athens Bicentennial Bash.

The mural features a train, iconic and historic buildings around the city, and ATHENS letters designed with events like Kiddie Carnival and Fiddlers.

“First, I want to say that our world is connected through the arts,” Bobo wrote on Facebook once the students completed the mural. “Our daily lives and communities are so much richer because of our fine arts experiences.

What we bring to an art form as well as what an artist is trying to convey gives us all a more meaningful view of our world.

We wanted to leave something that would bring beauty and instill pride in Athens's historical treasures for years to come.”

Bobo said her students showed “grit, determination, kindness and lots of talent” by working after track meets, working on Saturdays, and working in the heat.

The public art project sparked another mural venture at the former Regions building across from City Hall. Art students from Lindsay Lane Christian Academy have started paintings of postcards that feature sites important to Athens, as well as the city’s logo.

The Alabama Bicentennial Commission has endorsed the bash and the art exhibit.

The Traveler’s Gift And The Decided Heart

by Ali Elizabeth Turner This was the ultimate “runnin’ and gunnin’” interview.

The mayor and I were in two different cars, headed to two different states, and we both pulled over in our respective automobiles for a safe phone interview. Today’s topic from The Traveler’s Gift was about having what the author calls having a “decided heart.” For those of you who are “tuning in” for the first time, Mayor Ronnie is doing a series based on The Traveler’s Gift, by Andy Andrews, a charming set of life lessons framed in time travel.

In each chapter, the hero, David Ponder travels through time and meets a historical figure who changed the world.

This time it was Christopher Columbus, or more properly, Cristόbal Colόn. For nineteen years, Columbus searched for a sponsor to fund his wild

journey that everyone thought would result in him as well as his crew falling off the side of the earth. And, when they were only eleven days shy of making landfall in Florida for the first time, the crew nearly

mutinied, insisting on turning around to avoid heading toward no known port, running out of supplies, and sealing their doom. What calmed them? What caused them, and David Ponder, to listen to rea-

son in a situation that was anything but reasonable? Having what was described as a “decided heart.” In other words, it is having a vision that is stronger and purer than any obstacle, fear, or criticism.

“This guy had a dream, and would not give up,” said the mayor, who is not facing anything like falling off the side of the earth anytime soon, but who does have a continual dream for Athens, which we’ll talk about in a bit. One of the weaknesses Colόn eviscerates with passion is indecisiveness.

On page 86 he says the following swift-kick-in-the-backside gems: “Most people fail at whatever they attempt because of an undecided heart. Should I/ Should I not? Go forward?

Go back? Success requires the emotional balance of a committed heart. When confronted with a challenge, the committed heart will search for a solution. The undecided heart searches for an escape.

A committed heart does not wait for conditions to be exactly right. Why? Because

conditions are never exactly right. Indecision limits the Almighty and His ability to perform miracles in your life.

He has put the vision in you--proceed! To wait, to wonder, to doubt, to be indecisive is to disobey God.” “Ouch,” I said. The part about indecisiveness and disobedience really got to the mayor, too. The most taxing part of leadership for any leader is being just as willing to listen to people’s concerns, counsel and wisdom as it is to follow your gut and never waver from it. And, to live with the fact that no matter what, someone isn’t going to like it.

Goes with the territory.

Before we wrapped up, I asked, “What’s your dream, sir?” He answered, “To build well, and to come together in unity.” Then he added the thing that is always on his heart, and that is the future of our young people, and making sure we equip them to go after their dreams and do it right.

It was time to get back on the road for both of us. Literally, Ronnie was rollin’...

A Lie Could Cost You Everything

D.A. Slinkard is the manager of the Athens Staples store It seems to me that we live in a society based upon lies. That’s right, we enjoy lying to ourselves. We do it all the time. The husband asks the wife if his clothes look right, and instead of telling him he has no business wearing skinny jeans, because she lied, there he goes out into the world wearing jeans that were never meant for him to wear in the first place.

We have participation trophies handed out to people who barely even tried. What are we teaching? We are teaching the world around us to lie and be deceptive

because, honestly, not everyone deserves an award for the work they do.

I can tell you that while growing up I did not always deserve an award or a trophy for the work I did. In fact, I had some tough love and was told quite frequently of my shortcomings.

Being told my work was lackluster did more good for me than having someone lie to me and tell me how great and wonderful I was. We have kids growing up these days under false pretenses thinking they are something when in actuality they are nothing.

We wonder why 25- to 30-year-old kids are still living at home with their parents. I am amazed that in the year 2018, I am writing the words “25- to 30-year-olds” and “kids” in the same sentence because I am calling someone who is in their mid-to-late twenties a “kid.” Growing up I did not want to be labeled as such. I wanted to be able to sit at the grown-up table; I wanted to be classified as an adult. And now it seems that we have a society completely wrapped around being a non-adult. We live in a society that teaches

our women to be more masculine and our men to be more feminine. No wonder there is so much confusion in the world.

I cannot believe how many t-shirts are out there spouting such slogans such as, “I cannot adult today,” or some other slogan that is just maniacal to suggest. As my pastor would say, “Grow up.” There are some things in life that whether we want to do the task or not makes no difference; you still must do it. If you are a parent and your kid, not a 20-something-year-old kid but a child, is hungry it is your responsibility to feed them.

It is your responsibility to make sure your young child is being taken care of. Yet we have grandparents who are raising their own kids plus their grandchildren.

Why? We lied to them and told them they were great when we should have been honestly informing them about how the world would eat their lunch.

The time is now to face realities and live up to our responsibilities. We all have responsibilities no matter the age. The responsibilities could be school work, work life, family life, church

life, but I can tell you with 100% certainty a responsibility would not be “video games.”

I remember I used to be into playing video games, and I actually remember the day when I was sitting there trying to hold my daughter while playing a video game. I knew then that something had to be changed (besides a dirty diaper) and that was the end of my video playing days. I understood I had a responsibility and then I took actions for my responsibility.

I am no martyr. I am no different than the next person as far as my wants, my desires, my hopes, my dreams, but I am different in the way that I think and in the way I live my life.

It is high time that we all change the way we think and begin to realize we have a responsibility for the lives we are living. It is not up to our moms and dads to be able to provide for me nor for you if you are a grown adult.

This may be a tough article for some to read, and if you are upset by anything that has been written, please know and understand my next comment is made out of love. Those people who are upset and offended by the words written -- these people are the problem we face in the world today. It is time to grow up and stop lying to others and yourself.

Meet Ewell Patterson Smith

Meet Ewell Patterson Smith (I have often wondered what the “P” stood for!) SK3 US Coast Guard.

Ewell was born in Athens on June 6, 1943 and grew up on Houston Street.

After graduating from Athens High School in 1961, he attended Athens College and graduated in 1965 with a BA in Business Administration, after which he worked a short time for a finance company.

In 1966, he joined the military because he felt it was his duty to serve his country. Instead of waiting to be drafted, Ewell elected to join the Coast Guard. He said he decided to join the Coast Guard because it intrigued him and he was very interested in fire and rescue.

He had been a volunteer fireman in Athens for a number of years.

He thought it would be a great adventure.

Ewell went to boot camp in Cape May, New Jersey. He was then stationed aboard the USS Unimak whose homeport was also at

Cape May. At that time, the Unimak was used primarily for training Coast Guard Reserve personnel. Aboard the Unimak, he was assigned to the Radio Room, where he stood watch and relayed messages. He was also assigned deck duties which included maintenance of the deck. During General Quarters, when all hands (everyone available) aboard a ship must go to battle stations as quickly as possible, his primary duty was as a firefighter.

Ewell says he remembers that they drilled every couple of days. Twoweek missions were spent tracking Russian subs all over the East Coast from Charleston, SC. to St John’s Canada.

In 1972 when Ewell’s commitment in the Coast Guard was fulfilled, he separated as a Petty Officer 3rd Class. After leaving the Coast Guard, he went to work for another credit company and shortly thereafter, he received a call offering him a position as Assistant Business Manager at Athens College. Ewell

retired as Dean of Financial Affairs at Athens State University.

Ewell has been a volunteer and on the Board of Directors at the Alabama Veterans Museum for over 9 years.

After visiting the museum, he became interested in doing more for our veterans and that is why he got involved. He is currently the chairman of the nominating committee and also serves on the Building Fund committee. He has helped raise almost $500,000 toward our new expansion project.

Ewell’s goal is to see this building expansion project become a reality.

He would like to see the whole community get involved to make it happen. “I think that we should never forget the men and women that gave their all for this country and our right to be free; that is why this

In 1966, Ewell met his lovely wife Rita (Brown), and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this year. They have two sons, Denny and wife Kelly, and Stephen

Volleyball teams will start area tournament play October 22 and section cross-country meets will start November 1.

School-by-school highlights: Ardmore On the football field, the Tigers have fallen to 3-4 overall, stumbling against Madison Academy (4210), Brewer (18-17) and East Limestone (34-0). The Lady Tigers volleyball team claimed wins over Lindsay Lane, Clements and Tanner.

The boys’ and girls’ crosscountry teams came in third and fourth at the Elkmont Invitational.

Athens Bible Volleyball victories have come against Priceville, Decatur Heritage, Elkmont, Meek and St. Bernard. The Lady Trojans’ cross country team came in sixth in Class 1A-4A at the Randolph Classic. The boys finished tenth in 1A-4A at the Scottsboro Invitational while the girls placed ninth. At the Elkmont Invitational, the Trojans were fourth and the girls came in third. The varsity boys and girls ended up in seventh and tenth places respectively at the Dew It OnThe Trails meet at Point Mallard.

Golden Eagles defeated Ardmore, Dora, East Lawrence, Columbia, Elkmont, Central-Florence, Brooks.

The junior high boys’ crosscountry team was tenth at the Scottsboro Invitational. At the Kudzu Hills Invitational, the varsity girls had a sixthplace finish, the junior high boys and girls came in eighth and fifth respectively.

Clements The Colts football team’s record stands at 3-4, with losses to Westminster (6014),West Limestone (20-6) and Lauderdale County (420) preceding a 40-0 win over East Lawrence. The Lady Colts posted a sixth place at the Elkmont Cross-Country Invitational.

East Limestone East Limestone has improved their football record to 5-2 as they beat Scottsboro (28-13), Arab (42-0) and Ardmore (34-0), but fell to Athens (30-0). Lady Indians

had volleyball wins against Tanner, Madison County, West Limestone, Elkmont and Athens. The team also went undefeated through the Limestone County tournament. East Limestone’s boys’ cross-country team was seventh at the Elkmont Invitational.

Elkmont The Red Devils’ football record improved by two games since last mont; Deshler was forced to forfeit their game due to an ineligible player and another came on the field against Lexington (2827). Two more losses came as well against CentralFlorence (51-20) and Wilson (21-0). The volleyball team has beaten Tanner and West Limestone. The Lady Red Devils were eighth at the Scottsboro Cross Country Invitational. At their own Invitational, the Red Devils finished fifth with the girls coming in ninth.

Daevion Davis was picked to participate in the 32nd Alabama-Mississippi Classic. The game will be played December 17 at Montgomery's Cramton Bowl. The Jets football team upped their record to 5-2 overall, defeating Florence (47-33), Gadsden City (50-28) and Grissom (63-7). The varsity boys’ cross-country team won the Kudzu Hills Invitational with the girls coming in seventh; the junior high teams also topped their division. At the Jesse Owens Classic, the boys were runners-up in the silver division; the middle school Jets came in fifth.

Clements graduate and current Wallace State freshman Matt Smith won the individual title at the NJCAA Division I National Preview Tournament in Viera with a 4-under par 212. He also placed third at the Wallace State Invitational last month.

The Scoop On Pumpkins

According to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service, Americans purchase 1.1 billion pounds of pumpkins per year.

Most of these pumpkins will be carved, displayed, then tossed in the trash and be added to our landfills.

and water together in a large bowl. Then mix in the flour, cinnamon, baking soda, and baking powder. Mix it a bit and then stir in the egg.

Continue to stir until it is ALL combined. This might take a few minutes. Add a touch more water if needed to get the mixture into one solid, slightly sticky ball. Roll the dough onto a floured surface to about ¼” thick. Use a cookie cutter or just cut the dough into squares.

Make the treats size appropriate for your dog.

Pumpkin is packed with antioxidants, vitamins, fiber, and minerals. These are all good things and it is sad to see so much of it go to waste.

Make an effort to do more with the pumpkins you purchase. If you decorate your pumpkin without carving it, you can then use the pumpkin later to make pumpkin bread, soups, roasted pumpkin seeds, muffins, and so much more. The internet is packed with recipes using pumpkin purée.

When choosing a pumpkin, look for the smaller sugar pumpkins that make the best puree for baking use.

Once the holidays are over, give your pumpkins a chance to share their healthy goodness with you and your family. Pumpkin puree is easy to make and can be used immediately or frozen to use in future baking adventures.

Creating Pumpkin Purée To create pumpkin purée, wash your pumpkins, cut them in half, and remove seeds which

can be roasted later for a healthy snack. Scrape all the insides out using a spoon. Place pumpkin halves cut side down on a baking sheet. Roast them in the oven at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes to an hour. The pumpkins are ready when they can be easily pierced with a fork.

The pumpkin meat should easily peel away from the skin using a spoon. Place the pumpkin meat in a blender and puree until very smooth.

Remember, the purée freezes well for future use.

I’ve included the following recipe for homemade pumpkin dog treats I found on foodwithfeeling.com because I love my dog, and I know many of you have fur babies you love, too.

Place prepared dough treats on a lined or greased baking sheet and bake for about 30 minutes (depending on size) or until dough has thoroughly hardened. Let cool and enjoy giving these treats to your precious pup!

October Orange Cake

The color orange makes people think of fall. The color of falling leaves, the color of pumpkins, the color of warm sunsets, the color of sweet fruit. If the month of October had a color it would be orange. The color makes you feel warm and cozy.

Oranges, the fruit, are sweet and tart. This time of year, people give fruit to loved ones. Oranges have long symbolized the season of giving. The giving of oranges

(balls of gold) is a symbol of charity and giving. Also, because the orange separates easily into segments, it is an ideal and easy fruit to share with others.

My mother has always loved Orange Cake. She had an aunt that made it every holiday season and she has continued the tradition. It is a simple cake that is easy to make but is delicious and so comforting. We enjoy it every year, and I hope you will enjoy it as much as my family does.

Fresh Orange Cake

What You Need:

1 ½ cups flour 1 ½ tsp baking powder ¾ cup sugar 2 eggs 3 Tbsp milk ¾ cup freshly squeezed orange juice (from about 3 oranges) ½ cup oil 1 tsp vanilla extract 6 Tbsp orange zest (about 3 oranges) Pinch of salt

Glaze: 1 ¼ cup powdered sugar 2-3 Tbsp fresh orange juice ½ tsp vanilla extract

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and prepare a cake pan by greasing it well. In a medium bowl, sift together all the dry ingredients, and mix until combined. Set aside In a separate bowl, combine the wet ingredients and whisk until combined.

Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, and lightly whisk until combined. Do not overmix.

Pour the batter into the bake pan and bake for about 30-40 minutes until lightly golden brown on top and a toothpick comes out clean when placed in the center of the cake.

Remove from the oven and let cool to room temperature, gently remove cake from pan and cool completely on baking rack.

While the cake is cooling, mix all the ingredients until fully combined. Drizzle on completely cooled cake and serve.

This Thing We Call Honor

by Rosemary Dewar If a government diminishes the authority of parents in a family unit, there is nothing reinforcing the citizen’s inclination to honor a government’s authority.

Authority is a balancing act of expectations.

Those expectations are to be respected through the natural transition of power from one generation to the next. The more societal structures are designed to be constructed, the more a community is motivated to sustain it. Similarly, a family is built with mutually beneficial ethics.

You would not tolerate an abusive family; neither should you tolerate an abusive government.

A government is designed to ultimately train a citizen in the way he should go. It is held to a standard that is also above itself. Any law that violates the individual’s right to autonomy gravely fails. The United States’ republic is intended to keep independent citizens safe from the government itself. If a government is authoritarian, a citizen is intellectually and sovereignly stunted. The social environment is over-regulated to where a citizen becomes bitterly helpless. After that,

it will not be long before the population revolts.

When a government does not confine itself to the sake of freedom, it implodes.

When a culture aims to supplant the roles of a father, a mother, and the structure of authority, it will lose the very core that created it: the grateful citizen. If a government wants to be your teacher, doctor, parents, pay-grade, entertainment, satisfaction, it not only wants to be worshipped, it wants to be lusted after. In return, it wants a servant-citizen.

Parents are held to a standard that is above and beyond them. In order to bring up a child in the way the child should go, parents are to sacrifice for them. Children are to be shielded temporarily. An authoritarian parent stunts the social, emotional, and intellectual growth by controlling the environment too much. It makes the child resentfully dependent. Some mistakes can only be learned from by experiencing them. Should an indiscretion put the child in as much risk as the parent, of course the parent ought to intervene. If a child infringes on the parents’ duty to care for them, the child needs more stability in order for the parent to maintain a healthy environment. Again, the

partnering with the individual to better society.

It would rather be the master over the citizen.

Instead of a healthy family unit, an authoritarian government becomes an unsightly Oedipus-esque manifestation. The fear of overthrow will become its imminent undoing. It will cast aside the “potentially dangerous” in order to stay in power. The ethics that once ordered the society are gone. Upon the outcasts’ return, an authoritarian society will attempt to reintegrate them. Once citizens recognize the hell that has been created in their absence, they pluck

out the knowledge that gave them sight before slowly withering away.

A government is only as good as the limits it holds itself to, as well as the consistent structure of justice and protection it supplies to society.

A family is only as good as the stability it generates in order for a member to start their own family.

No one should expect a family member or a citizen to honor an authority structure more than it should. However, honor is a matter of ethics that tests you to endure until it is your time to lead. You have a partial purpose to carry forward what has been entrusted to you, and you are expected to improve upon it for the sake of your responsibility to care for the previous generation.

Your ability to attend to those who cared for you will be hindered by your neglect for what came before you.

Be sure to not let what brought you here be destroyed right from under you, or you will go down with it.

Humanity is ultimately self-seeking and selfsatisfying. If we were honorably productive, we would not need government. Furthermore, if we were decently docile, we would not need family. The most honorable thing is usually the most challenging task to do well.

Convoy Of Hope: Where Everyone Is An “Honored Guest”

organization called Convoy of Hope By way of history, Convoy of Hope has been serving people in the states as well as abroad since 1994. It was started by the Donaldson family in order to show gratitude for the way people ministered to them after their father, Harold, was killed by a drunk driver in 1969. Now it is part of the missions focus of the Assemblies of God denomination, and as I sat in the planning meeting held at New Life Assembly here in Athens, my heart rejoiced over the fact that people of faith from all over our area are coming together in order to work together. About two years ago, ALMA members began to talk about doing something together to show the love of God in a practical way to people in AthensLimestone County. ALMA’s slogan is “Unity, Community, and Fellowship,” and they were putting the finishing touches on all the details that go into making a community outreach event successful.

The local Convoy event is being headed up by New Life’s pastor, Jason Parnell. Jason was already very familiar with Convoy of Hope, and told me that he was so glad that “ALMA’s desire to do something together” was just about to come to fruition. Put

another way, “It’s more than a moment, it’s a movement.”

Since Convoy was formed nearly 25 years ago, over 100 million people have been helped world-wide. As this article goes to press, they are part of the response teams helping in the aftermath of Hurricanes Florence and Michael, as well as the tsunami in Indonesia.

Thankfully, in Athens we are not in the middle of recovering from any disasters, but that does not mean that there are not people all around us needing help. Freddy Leonard, a life-long resident of Athens and member of Lindsay Lane Baptist Church, told me that he had realized in a whole new way how important Convoy’s work is, and said simply, “It’s time to give back.” He has been heading up marketing for the event.

Everyone at the planning meeting made it quite clear that this is about “us serving the community together, not about any one church.” They also were quick to thank the City of Athens for how supportive and gracious their involvement has been.

The 2018 event is going to be held at Swan Creek Park, 101 Swan Creek Dr. in Athens, beginning at 10 a.m. and going to 3 p.m. Convoy always refers to those who attend the event as “Guests of Honor,” and there will be a number of goods and services available and ready to be distributed. These include

groceries, a hot lunch, and free shoes for kids. Convoy of Hope has donated 1500 pairs of shoes just for this outreach, and someone has also anonymously donated 150 more pairs of shoes which will be arriving soon. There will be flu shots, blood pressure screenings, den-

tal screenings, and HIV/Hepatitis C tests. There will also be staff from Bradford Health Services for those struggling with substance abuse. There will be representatives who will focus on the needs of veterans, people who can give haircuts, and folks who will be ready to pray

with and for anyone who asks for it. There will also be employment information for those seeking jobs.

In order for an event like this to roll like a “well-oiled machine,” there is always a need for an army of volunteers, and while the response so far has been encouraging, ALMA is still looking for people of all ages to come out and help.

There is a lot of information that circulates about sexual violence and the people affected by it.

The following myths are common and can impact survivors of assault or abuse, as well as the behavior and effectiveness of friends; family; and medical, social service, and law enforcement personnel.

Fact: Many survivors experience tonic immobility or a “freeze response” during an assault where they physically cannot move or speak.

Myth: A lot of victims lie about being raped or give false reports.

Fact: Only 2-8% of rapes are falsely reported, the same percentage as for other felonies.

Myth: People that have been sexually assaulted will be hysterical and crying.

Fact: Everyone responds differently to trauma some may laugh, some may cry, and others will not show any emotions.

He spoke of when he was a little boy, and up on Thach Road there were two stores on either side of the railroad tracks. They were both members of the Moore family, and while they were “technically competitors,” they would go back and forth and visit each other’s stores. “All the small communities had a purpose, and I want my kids as well as the next generation to know it, what it was like. That is one of the things that will help us hang on to what we have.”

But last year, Collin just couldn’t shake the sense that he needed to run for that same office his dad once held. After much prayer, counsel from wise folks, and with a strong push from his whole family, he knew he needed to register to run, and he told me, “That was one of the scariest things I have ever done.”

Collin worked for a time for the Utilities Department of the City of Huntsville, and has spent his life working on his grandfather’s farm.

Since 2003, Collin has been with the Limestone County Water and Sewer Department. He knows just about every square foot of this county, from the roads to the fields to the water and sewer lines, and most importantly he has made it a point to know the people that make up the county.

In the months that Collin has been out doing what he calls “politickin’,” he has fallen even more in love with the people of Limestone County, something that was a deeply pleasant surprise. I believe him when he tells me, “Win, lose, or draw, I have made new friends and gotten to really know the people of this county; and I am a better man for it.” He told me about the day when he was doorbelling, and he ended up listening to a man tell his personal story for several hours. It has been one of the highlights of the campaign.

I asked Collin, “When you are awake in the middle of the night, thinking about

the job if you get it, what do you think about? “Growth,” he said quickly. He knows, as do other leaders with a vision for the future of our area, that growth has to be creative, well-managed, and will yield a solid economic return over the long haul.

“If you have a destination spot, good folks come if you have great restaurants and places to stay. I want Athens to have something that is unique, that people from all over will come to see. I also want to see some things built for young people. Right now they don’t have much to do,” he said. We talked about possible places and types of venues, and also what happens when we lose commerce.

Harvest Time!

There once was farmer who planted good, precious seeds in his field but the enemy came at night and planted tares (weeds) among the wheat. As the wheat started to grow, so did the tares and it was asked of the farmer by his workers did he not sow good seeds. Of course his response was yes, but the farmer knew that the enemy had come and “tried” to sabotage his crop. The key word here is “tried.” His workers then asked if they should pull out the tares that were growing with the wheat. The farmer said no, let them all grow together until the harvest so as not to harm the wheat; and then they would be separated. So the good wheat and the tares grew together until the harvest; and then the tares were bundled and burned and the wheat was put in the barn. You may ask why I have shared this story with you; and my answer would first be to share this statement: “And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” Galatians 6:9.

As we view our media devices, turn on the news, read the paper, or listen to the radio, we are constantly given insight to all that is wrong or bad with our world today.

It is overwhelming and it truly leads us to wonder what our

world is coming to. Well let’s face it. There is no denying it - there is negativity, destruction, and continuous chaos all around us – The world we once knew is no more.

Yes, there is a lot of evil but make no mistake there is still a lot of Good and a lot of God in this World. We are living in different times. This causes us open our eyes, broaden our thinking, and even expand our understanding in areas to which we never gave much thought or concern.

we too will be faced with the tares of life all around us, but do know that growth is still an option. What the farmer said to his workers at the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, “First gather together the tares and bind them in bundles

to burn them, but gather the wheat into my barn.”

Cowboy Dressage

by Deb Kitchenmaster I am amazed how the world of horses has connected me to new faces, cultures, and experiences.

CORRAL CONNECTIONS has ‘new’ meaning as I reflect. A young equestrian student who was the first to come into my horse-related life was from Switzerland.

Cornelia’s equine interest surpassed any I had encountered.

Forever engraved in my memory are the two young women from Tokyo, Japan, (psychology students) who came to the states and spent three weeks with me, learning equine and some English. Our good-bye hugs were wet with tears. We mutually were honored and grew from being together. New Zealand brought an equine lover into my life, and she experienced what it felt like to have wings and soar on the back of the horse. What a beautiful story came out of this corral connection. Within the states came people from Missouri, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Alabama, Tennessee, and Texas. And we simply cannot forget Canada!

What amazing Beloved people. How interesting to learn about other cultures.

As the founders of the movement say, “Cowboy Dressage is more about a way of life than a rulebook. And with that as its premise, one can see how it can show the way to true partnership with a horse.” Dressage is the training of a horse to carry out a series of precise controlled movements in response to minimal signals from its rider. A dressage event is a competitive event in which horse and rider are judged on the elegance, precision, and discipline of the horse’s movements.

The Truths of Domestic Violence

The reality of the abuser:

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and with domestic violence on the rise, it is time to uncover the realities of this difficult issue. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (www.NCADV. org) more than 3 million incidents of DV are reported each year, for both men and women.

Nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. While the amount of physical abuse is staggering, what is often overlooked is the mental and emotional abuse that includes verbal cruelty, withholding, controlling, and manipulating.

Let’s examine the four truths or realities of DV: the abuse, the abuser, the cycle, and the dependency.

1. Abusers deny their actions and blame the victim.

The reality abuse:

2. Abusers need to be right and in control.

3. Abusers tend to be possessive and may try to isolate their partners from family and friends.

4. Abusers are often needy with unrealistic expectations of their partners and the relationship.

5. Abusers personalities may include insecurity, distrust, jealousy, and

aggression.

The reality of the cycle: According to www.domesticviolence.org the cycle of violence includes 4 stages: 1. Tension building occurs when the abuser starts to get angry, communication breaks down, and the victim feels the need to keep the abuser calm.

2. The attack occurs, which includes any type of abuse.

3. Making up involves the abuser apologizing, stating that it will ever happen again, or even denying that it ever took place.

4. The calm period usually means that physical abuse may not be taking place, and the victim

may hope that the abuse is over.

The reality of dependency: According to NCADV, victims of violence endure an average of up to seven attacks. The abuser is counting on his ability to control the victim and use shame about the abuse to lower self-esteem. This lack of confidence causes the victim to withdraw, creating even more fear and reliance. The abuse becomes an emotional rejection with a threat of abandonment. Victims hope the abuser will change, since there are usually good times between episodes. And often the abuser can be charming and romantic.

One victim explained

that, “You love Dr. Jekyll and make excuses for Mr. Hyde.” The dependency carries over into other areas besides emotional. Victims may also be dependent financially, have nowhere else to live, and have childcare concerns.

Next time we will examine the steps you can take if you or someone you know is involved in a domestic violence situation.

It is that time of year.

Colds, flus, allergies, runny nose, sneezing, coughing, more aches and pains and fevers begin to affect most of us.

Some people call it the miserable time of year.

With winter rolling in, most of us will not be getting the sunshine that is necessary for our bodies to manufacture enough vitamin D. When we become deficient in vitamin D, we are much more susceptible to all the disorders mentioned above plus many more, and we are also making it much harder to manufacture strong bones and teeth.
