In 1997, an Oscar-nominated movie was produced that went on to become one of “the granddaddies of ‘em all” when it comes to illustrating the power of spin as it relates to politics. It is called, Wag The Dog, and was creepily correct in real life when it beat the initial breaking of the Clinton/Lewinsky scandal by about a month. It even showed the intern wearing a beret long before the hat style became inextricably linked with a stained blue dress and the sullying of virtue.

In the movie, there is a presidential campaign that has just been hit with the news of Weinstein-like behavior on the part of the incumbent that threatens to sink any hopes of POTUS getting a second term. Rather than dealing with any part of the truth, the president’s advisors decide to create a massive diversion by throwing a fake war. The advisors, played by Anne Heche and Robert De Niro, secretly hire a famous Hollywood director, played by Dustin Hoffman, to draw national attention away from the scandal, courtesy of the nightly news.

ground plays behind a production crew-crafted movie set of a “bombed out building in Albania,” with Kirsten Dunst portraying a desperate and beautiful orphan repeatedly running away from the rubble clutching her cat. The net result is that the clip is played over and over by the networks, fake news of troop deployment and then victory circulate, the president wins the re-election, and no one is the wiser. Then the movie producer mysteriously dies of a heart attack…

On Monday, ABC news did what appears to be the closest thing to Wag that I have heard of in more than 20 years, except they got caught, thanks to the ubiquitous smart phone and its ability to take pics and make films. ABC ran a piece on the nightly news, as well as Good Morning America, with the screen caption of “Slaughter In Syria.” It claimed, “A border town bombarded by Turkey’s military, this video right here appearing to show Turkey’s military bombing Kurd civilians in a Syrian border town.” I suppose the use of the word “appearing” might have almost saved them, except the anchor went

by Turkish backed fighters on those very allies.” I’m not saying that the Turks are incapable of committing atrocities, but who was making the “reports,” and who was verifying them?

The big problem was that the film being passed off as “breaking news” was in fact made at a nighttime gun range firepower display held in Kentucky in 2017. The original clip shows several people being seen standing and watching at the edge of the explosive ordnance show, and yet, when it hit the news, the onlookers had been conveniently edited out. ABC did issue an “apology” as stated below: "We've taken down video that aired on 'World News Tonight’ Sunday and 'Good Morning America' this morning that appeared to be from the Syrian border immediately after questions were raised about its

accuracy. ABC News regrets the error."

I guess all you have to do is rework the definition of “error” by Photoshopping out the humans who were actually there with their cell phones, and you are golden. At least this photojournalistic faux pas appears to have been made to make the president look bad, but hey, maybe there will be spinners who will spin the spinners’ spins and come up with a whole different explanation, as well as an equally empty “apology.” At any rate, whoever invented the term “wag the dog” appears to have gotten it right when they say, “A dog is smarter than its tail, but if the tail were smarter, then the tail would 'wag the dog.’” There’s a whole lot o’ waggin’ goin’ on.

The Poolee Continues To Prevail

by Ali Elizabeth Turner Back in May, a high school senior in Colorado was getting close to graduating from a STEM high school as, what is known in Marine parlance, a “poolee.” A poolee is someone who decides while still in school to join the Marines and enter basic training soon after graduation. This poolee’s name is Brendan Bialy. On May 9, as a comparatively untrained warrior, he faced down something which has become all too common in our nation -- two disenfranchised fellow students who came to school armed and with the intent to kill! Interestingly, the STEM school was 15 minutes away from Columbine, the scene that 20 years ago put school shootings on the map when 12 students and a teacher were gunned down. Brendan and his bestie, Kendrick Castillo, tackled one of the guys with the gun, and in the fray, Kendrick was killed.

There is no debate over the fact that Brendan is a true hero, and his voice clearly demonstrates that the loss of his friend is still fresh and deep.

But what happened that

day has only served to make him more resolved to become the best possible Marine that he can.

There are many things that impress me about this kid, some of which include how much he does not want to be considered a hero, and his resolve to not surrender to the mentality of victimhood. On his Instagram account he posted: “Why in the world would I let this coward get what he wants? I’m not a victim,” he said.

“I refuse to be a victim.

Kendrick refused to be a victim.”

At the time of the shooting, the 8th District Marines had this to say about him: “Brendan’s courage and commitment to swiftly ending this tragic incident at the risk of his own safety is admirable and inspiring.”

Brendan went to basic in San Diego, and graduated as platoon honor man with a meritorious promotion to private first class. He stood out to his peers as well as

his commanding officers. His drill instructor SSgt Marcus Chestnut said in a video interview, “I don’t necessarily think recruit training changed Bialy ― I think he is who he was when he first got here, I think we just gave him some additional attributes that made him a stronger man.”

Bialy is now in the Marine School of Infantry, and upon graduation from that school will head on to training to be an electro-optical ord-

nance repairer.

“My thoughts on becoming a Marine were nothing but reinforced after the shooting,” Bialy said in a video produce by the Marine Corps.

“What I saw that day was complete and total malevolence, and bad overcome by good.” I think that attitude is what is going to make this kid go places; having the concept at the ripe old age of 18 that there can actually be good and evil, and that good actually has the power to overcome evil. Brendan is confident he will see his friend again, and I pray that is the case. Until then, I will rest easier knowing that someone like Brendan Bialy has taken an oath to protect us. May God bless and keep PFC Brendan Bialy, now and forever.

Ask And You Shall Receive

So far in this series I have talked about being patient with your goals, living with passion, and not making you problems bigger than they are. Without the character to do these things, one lacks the capacity to develop purpose in life.

Purpose is defined as “the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.” In this article, I will be talking about creating passion and developing the character to pursue not just goals but passions.

Most of us here in the South have heard the scripture, “Ask and you shall receive.” My question to you, the reader, is what have you received up to this point in your life? I am not just talking about monetary rewards. I am speaking directly to the creation of character by “asking” life for more. More than you think you can give.

More than you think you deserve.

Genuine joy is something that many people seem to lack that deserves significant attention. I can see on their faces and in their actions that they are living day to day, just surviving. I myself have been there, and I still have my moments. The difference between the person who has joy and is passionate about life and the person who feels lost in this life is simply this -- What actions/attitudes have led to this moment that

you are in?

A joyful heart is the beginning of a life filled with passion. A joyful heart can often come from the little things in life. The smile of a child. The achievement of a goal. But is can also come from setting goals so high that, even if you do not achieve them, you will be much farther ahead than you ever thought was possible.

This leads me to a universal truth. Asking for what you want in life gets you that very thing.

It takes time and patience to get that thing.

But what if you had told yourself, “I don’t want to just climb this mountain. I also want to climb the bigger mountain?”

Set your sights high and you may see what the eagle sees.

For instance, if your goal is just to be “happy” in life, then you will likely achieve some level of happiness. Let’s dissect this goal for a moment.

One, it is not specific.

Define happiness for yourself. Is happiness making a lot of money?

Is it getting recognized by your peers for a job well done? Is it having children that are respect-

ful and well-adjusted?

Take the goal of happiness a step further.

Maybe happiness is just a general term to you.

A knee-jerk reaction. If things aren’t going your way, you choose to be “happy” anyway. That isn’t a goal. That isn’t a passion. That isn’t setting the bar high enough.

Now, if you set your goal to have more good days than bad, and keep track of the good days, then that is an attainable goal.

What if your goal was to make everyday a good day by being less affected? What if you tied in that goal with raising children who think that way too? What if

you said to yourself that nothing will take my joy, peace, savings, etc.?

That is a positive, high goal.

So what if you have a “bad” day here and there. So what if you have to dip into savings for an emergency. Your goal, your mission, your purpose is higher than that. You have now set

yourself up for passion.

I would encourage you as you go through the days to come to set high, seemingly unattainable goals. Track your progress. Build your garden.

Watch as your life transforms slowly over time.

Be patient, and life will give you what you ask of it and, oftentimes, not a penny more.

Art Group Offers Community Recipe Box For Art Of Cooking Program

Athens is embarking on its quirky Athens Grease Festival this weekend, and a local art group is cooking up an idea to encourage the community to share recipes.

Saturday’s Athens Grease Festival is a play on words that is a tribute to the Greek origin of the city’s name and a celebration of all things fried. Athens Arts League is joining

the festivities early and has installed an Art of Cooking community recipe box outside at High Cotton Arts at 103 W. Washington Street in Downtown Athens. The white metal box is at the entryway of High Cotton Arts.

“The community can come by and take a recipe and share a recipe,” said Athens Arts League board member Holly Hollman, who saw a

similar idea on fence posts in Tangier Island, Va. “Cooking here truly is an art form, and this is a fun way for the community to share recipes passed down from their families. I’ve included my mother’s chocolate fried pies recipe in the box and some others I’ve always enjoyed.”

for just fried foods, but any recipe a person wants to share.

“We already have recipes for a tailgate dip, Irish potato candy, corn pudding, and grape salad in our recipe box,” she said.

Athens Arts League will keep the community recipe box installed for a year, and if the interest continues, the box will

remain.

Volunteers with Athens Arts League will also have a tent at Athens Grease Festival on Saturday near the Kids Zone where children of all ages can join Gail Bergeron in creating a small clay pot on a potter’s wheel. This a free activity that Athens Arts League is presenting.

Well, Kids, Who Picks Up The Tab?

Mayor Ronnie had a dead battery, (or “battry,” as his granddad used to say) and had Holly Hollman start off our time together while he got a jump at his house.

As always, there is a lot going on, and the first things we talked about were Grease Festival tomorrow, as well as Storytelling Festival next week. I got an update on how kids from Scotland are going to be getting on Skype with kids from our area to teach them about Scottish history -- things like the castle where the crown jewels were hidden from Cromwell and other invaders.

We moved to the topic of the 6th annual Mayor’s Youth Commission just having been launched.

There are close to 45 kids this year, and sadly, no homeschoolers. The schools represented were Athens High School, Athens Bible School, and Lindsay Lane Christian Academy. Because the environment, homelessness, and mental health are buzzwords, those are some of the

“Jerome came up with the idea of having the kids earn points toward something special later in the year,” Holly told me. I was glad to hear it, as I know firsthand that Jerome has the heart to teach entrepreneurial skills to kids. We came to the topic of projects for the year, and one of the things that is important to them this year is homelessness and mental health.

Because people these days are so used to looking to government to be responsible for fixing

social ills and then picking up the tab, the first discussion on homelessness resulted in the kids thinking that we need to build a shelter for 40.

So, the tough questions began. They were asked, “Who pays for it?” “Who would run it?” “Which neighborhood should we put it in? Yours?” “If we build one for 40, what will we do when 100 people want shelter?” “Is this the responsibility of government, churches, non-profits, who?” Holly told me, “They didn’t know what to say.” She then said, “They didn’t know what to say.”

So, Holly said that Mayor Ronnie told them, “Y’all need to think about this.” They were given assignments to begin to solve the problem and have some suggestions when they meet again.

One of the other things that the Youth Commission members will be working on is to contact Limestone County about hazardous waste disposal. They have been tasked to see if grant money can be garnered in order to make it possible for citizens of the country to have consistent opportunities to safely dispose of hazardous waste.

Mayor Ronnie came and joined us for a few moments in Holly’s office, and then he had to roll.

We agreed, it’s going to be a great year with our Youth, and I am going to be interested in seeing what they come up with.

Slinkard On Success

Obsessed

Have you ever taken the time to notice how much we blame other people for our own downfalls?

Turn on the news, open a newspaper, or listen to the conversations at the local coffee shops; it seems that someone is blaming someone else for the pitfalls of our world, of our country, and our society. To me, it seems we lack accountability on all fronts. I’m not turning this into a political diatribe, but I will say that the next time we go to point fingers at someone else, we need to realize we have three fingers pointing right back at us.

He was caught speeding and felt that the ticket he received wasn’t his fault but was the sole result of his boss being longwinded. Wrong way of thinking. I was at a store the other night and heard a customer blame the cashier because the customer left her debit card at the checkout. Excuse me? How is the debit card being left at the checkout the cashier’s fault when the debit card being used has the chip? The customer was at fault, not the cashier. Again, wrong way of thinking.

I truly believe that if we want success in certain areas of our life, there are two things that need to happen.

We need to hold ourselves accountable for the results we get, and we need to become obsessed with what we want to achieve. I was

reading a book recently and a quote that stood out to me was, “There is no such thing as failure, there are only results.” I have to admit that I really, really liked that quote because of how true the statement is.

If we are having success, we don’t want to change a thing in how we are going about our business.

However, if things are going bad, we are quick to look at things in terms of success and failure. Not true. If we are not getting the results we want, then we must change the way we go about our business.

Examining what works and what doesn’t work enables us to hold ourselves accountable for our results. The next part is the truly fun part, and that is becoming obsessed about that which we desire.

If you want success in a particular area then you must become obsessed with that area. Think about how successful your priorities will be when you become obsessed with them? How many times do we treat what we want to be successful at as merely a hobby? Are we going to have success? Are we going to be motivated to hold ourselves accountable? To find success in what is important to you, you must learn to become obsessed with becoming the best. When you have that obsession to succeed, you will no longer have to worry about whether or not you will hold yourself accountable.

Entrants Sought For The Annual Veterans Day Parade!

by Sandra Thompson, Director, Alabama Veterans’ Museum Honoring our veterans, that is what it is all about, and we try to do it every day. What a better way to honor them for Veterans Day than a parade! Veterans Day, as opposed to Memorial Day which is to honor the veterans we have lost, is to honor all individuals who have served in the military.

Armed Forces Day, also in May, honors those members currently serving. Originally known as Armistice Day, it honored the official end to WWI, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. At the

urging of major U.S. veterans’ organizations, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.

This year, the Alabama Veterans Museum along with members of the local service organizations will resume management of the Athens/ Limestone County Veterans Day Parade which will be held on Saturday, Nov 9 at 11:00 a.m. The parade will start at the Athens Middle School (formerly the high school), go down Hobbs St., around the square, and end up at Hometown grocery. Although we are honoring

all veterans, we are seeking WWII veterans to ride in the lead float. We are also excited to announce this year we will

have a premier sponsor, the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP). AARP offers special discounts and

Sweater Weather

It is finally feeling like fall, and I am ready to bust out my sweaters and boots. Some of y’all love summer; well for this gal, I love fall and winter. Maybe I love this cooler weather because I am the proud owner of a “Sweater Body.” If you are asking what a sweater body is, you don’t have one! I’m fluffy, pleasantly plump, and wellpadded; I’m made to be covered with a sweater.

This week’s recipe is a play on one of my favorite dishes of all time. There is a great little Italian restaurant in Decatur that serves Eggplant Rollatini and it is AMAZING. This recipe takes delicious chicken and rolls it up in thin strips of zucchini. It is a delicious swap with no guilt! And the best part is it is only 4 ingredients! I am sure your family will beg for seconds of this dish.

Now, I am working hard towards a trimmer version of myself and maybe I will graduate to a t-shirt body soon. But for right now, I am still rocking the sweater. In the past, I was ashamed of my body. I wasn’t comfortable in my own skin. To most people, I seemed to be brimming with confidence. I have a degree in vocal performance.

I didn’t mind being on stage or public speaking. But for someone who has always been uncomfortable and unsure of themselves, they become very good actors. I could have won an Oscar. On the outside, I was confident and in control; on the inside, I was falling apart and constantly second guessing every minute of my life.

Let’s embrace ourselves for where we are in our lives -- no matter if you are rocking that summer body or that sweater body. Love yourself! Embrace it! Enjoy the journey and continue to walk that hard path. It’s so gonna be worth it!

Making the inside match the outside has proven to be a hard road, but boy, oh, boy, am I grateful for deciding to walk the hard road. I could lie to you and say that becoming comfortable with yourself is all puppy dogs and roses, but it’s not. It’s hard work, but so worth it! Surrounding yourself with people who are going to keep you focused on your goal will make it easier. Create for yourself a safe place to fall. Allow yourself to be vulnerable. Once you reach your goal, you will be happy for all the hard work.

Recipe #20: Chicken Zucchini

What You Need:

3 cups cooked chicken breast, shredded 2 ½ cups spaghetti sauce 3 medium zucchini, cut lengthwise 1 ½ cups mozzarella, shredded, divided

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Mix shredded chicken with 1 ½ cups of spaghetti sauce. Sir well. In a 9x13 casserole dish, spread ½ cup of spaghetti sauce on the bottom.

Slice the zucchini lengthwise 1/8 inch thick. A mandolin works great for this.

Spread 3 tablespoons of the chicken mixture over each zucchini slice. Sprinkle with mozzarella cheese. Be sure to save ½ cup of cheese to sprinkle on top of the zucchini rolls once they are in the casserole dish.

Carefully roll up each zucchini roll and place them in the October 18 - October 31, 2019

Bake covered with foil for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes more until the cheese is melted and browned.

The Masks Among Us

The latest cinema rendition of the Joker, which depicts the origin of the villain sent political and religious communities reeling. It was as though this was a brand new societal contagion that couldn’t be quarantined. Art has two functions: to inspire or to reveal.

Furthermore, villains are rarely a source of inspiration for people who aim to improve themselves.

Heroes are, by far, more inspirational for any society, and are more revered in history. There are many fictional, villainous characters that wear masks. There was nowhere near the same level of outrage directed at the Phantom of the Opera. There were no editorials saying the Phantom was a depiction of the patriarchy, and that the musical would inspire the emotional abuse of vulnerable young women and children.

So what changed? Society continues to find fault where there is none, in order to deflect from what ought to be dealt with in their lives.

In the movie, The Pursuit of Happyness (based on a true story), we see Chris Gardner, an African American, experience a year of homelessness after his wife leaves him. Chris is forced to sell a medical product that no one wants in order to care for his son. Mr. Gardner is in and out of homeless shelters, and during that time was mugged as well. He is given a one in a million chance to intern at E.F. Hutton for free. He manages to find favor among his supervisors, and he tri-

umphs over his hardships. There were no editorials stating that Chris Gardner should not have been put in such desperate straits before finding success.

Society owed him nothing but a fair shot, which was given to him. Chris Gardner made unwise decisions in his life, but eventually he stopped making poor decisions and made a better life for himself and his son.

Another well known masked villain is the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera. He too had a difficult life filled with disease and abuse.

Instead of being grateful for the one friendship he had been able to

maintain, he channels all of his talents toward manipulating, frightening, and then murdering those around him. There was no one asserting that the movie in 2004 was going to inspire disenfranchised men to put other members of society at high risk for attacks. It would have been as absurd then as it is now with respect to the Joker.

The point of masked characters in literature is to hold a mirror up to you. It is a challenge to keep yourself in check, and to make you aware of your own dark impulses in order for you to have an aversion to them. For the vast ma-

jority of the Westernized civil societies, that is what stories about villains do.

It is arrogant to think that any civic advisory board is capable of effectively censoring a society enough in order to shape how members of that society will behave. They will end up censoring everything, as many influencers already attempt to do. If society can hold fast to a set of values, it will have a better chance of selfregulating as long as government manages to have a comparative level of self-control.

The Joker’s character as a whole is a man who has been dealt a painful hand. His surroundings keep making it harder for him to overcome his circumstances. In the end, the Joker blames everything on his environment, and relinquishes his responsi-

Save The Date For The Grand Re-opening Of Pho Can Tho Vietnamese Restaurant

know how important it was to consume homemade broth often, and thankfully that understanding is returning to our hometown, courtesy first of Tommy, and now Carina and Carlos. The health benefits of broth include a generous dose of minerals, protein and vitamins, as well as a reduction in inflammation and improved joint health. Because broth is the basis of Pho, it is their most closely guarded secret. What Carlos did tell me is that it is made on-site from all natural

A few years back, he decided to bless the people of Athens-Limestone with the opportunity to experience authentic food from Vietnam, and on Hwy 31 S opened what is called the Pho Can Tho Vietnamese Restaurant, or Pho for short. It is one of my favorite places to eat in our area. It has done well, and yet Tommy was feeling that it was time to sell. Recently Tommy sold his restaurant, his experience, and his recipes to Carina Garza Askins and her brother, Carlos Garza. Carina had been a customer for years in Tommy’s nail salon, and he knew that Carina and Carlos had the culinary skills, experience, and work ethic to carry on his legacy. Both Carina and Carlos grew up in their family’s restaurants in Michigan and Florida, and have been intensively involved in all phases of what it takes to be successful restaurateurs.

In May, Carina began an intensive four-month stint learning “all things Pho” as Tommy’s apprentice, and Carlos started about a month later. This meant far more than just cooking Vietnamese food, but learning a skill that utilizes specific spices, cooking methods, and recipes that go back generations. While Pho (pronounced FUH) technically refers to a specific type of soup, it has come to mean a special approach to cooking Vietnamese food, and is indigenous to Western Vietnam. Tommy’s father taught him three generations’ worth of culinary art, and teaching Carina and Carlos to take over was more than a business transaction, it was the creation of a new legacy.

decide to get a side of broken rice. It is made of thin slices of marinated beef, cooked quickly with onion and pepper, and served over a bed of lettuce with fresh tomato slices for the garnish. Another is the lemon grass chicken, which is definitely enough for two meals and is spicy, but not too much so. Its name in Vietnamese is Com Ga Xao Sa Ot, but you can just ask to order H4!

One of the great benefits of Pho food is that it is as healthy as it is delicious. Carlos noticed that he dropped a few pounds once he started working there and quit eating as much fast food. Some of his favorites are the vermicelli dish with pork, the grilled shrimp, the rare stake Pho, and chicken fried rice. The chicken fried rice is a combination of yellow rice and broken rice, and the addition of fresh carrot and tomato make it stand out. All the food is guaranteed to be MSG-free.

Those who have cooked traditional foods from every culture on the planet since the beginning of time used to

Navigating Hibernation Eating Habits

The weather is finally changing and with the cooler temperatures comes more time spent inside on the couch. Football tailgating weekends and holiday events mean we have to stay even more focused on our nutrition habits because these things tend to make us less active and more snack prone.

hungry, therefore lessening the temptation to over indulge. When choosing from the amazing food spreads you will be faced with at gatherings, remember that the best choices are always the ones where you can clearly distinguish the ingredients. Casseroles and things covered in heavy sauces pack a huge punch you don’t really want, while all-natural, whole foods will fill you up and tend to be less detrimental to your body.

The last major tip I have for you is to drink at least 84 ounces of water every day.

day is another way to battle the cravings and temptations. And finally, choose your beverage wisely at the party. Steer clear of the alcohol and sugary drinks, at least in excessive amounts.

Vinyl Revival Of Elkmont: Providing The Joy That’s In The Records

blessed to have a teacher at the Tech Center who saw something in him. The teacher’s name was Mr. George Mitchell, and to this day Keith is grateful for the fact that Mr. Mitchell helped Keith learn the graphic arts and printing trade well enough to make it a life-long career. Of course, this was back before everything went desktop and digital, but it gave Keith the chance to spread his wings wide.

Keith worked for Minute Man press in Decatur, and did free lance work as well. Then he decided to move to the Detroit area to work and be in the rock-and-roll scene. It was a wild time by his own admission, and he played bass for several cover bands. He married and became the father of three children, and knew that getting back home to the South was going to be a much better choice for everyone.

During the Detroit days and before, Keith began to develop a love both for collecting vinyl records as well as excellent equipment upon which to play them. He brought that love back home, and while printing has been his life long career, everything and anything that has to do with “old school” recordings of every genre of music is what lights him up, and he knows his stuff.

The very first time I walked

into Vinyl Revival, located at 18855 Upper Fort Hampton Road across from Red Caboose Café, I asked Keith for help with a possible project to help my mom. My sisters were wanting me to find something like a Walkman or Discman that used fairly simple technology that my mom could manage so that she could listen to music from her era. She is 99 years old, and music that is anchored to her past is powerfully therapeutic.

Keith sprang into brainstorm mode to come up with something that would meet the needs of my mom, and his concern for her, someone that he does not know, touched me.

I came into Keith’s shop, I was greeted by the sight of a Judy Collins album that was recorded in 1967, and entitled Wildflowers. I owned it as a teenager and used to perform most of the songs on it. It was a bittersweet blast from the past, and the place has hundreds of albums of every genre that I am sure have their own story to tell or are set to music.

Keith knows that it takes special equipment to support the full spectrum of sound that can only be heard on a vinyl record, and so the other part of Vinyl Revival is the sale of speakers, turntables, and accessories that will make that happen. I asked

Keith what the most valuable piece of equipment was that he had ever owned, and he told me that at one time he had a 1965 Macintosh tube amplifier. Some of his trade has been exporting speakers to SE Asia, which still has a large market for equipment from the ‘70s.

At Vinyl Revival you can buy equipment, or you can sell it; same with records.

Keith gets his inventory from a number of sources. Sometimes he goes to thrift stores, yard sales, and estate sales. “One time a guy sold me 8,000 albums, all at the same time,” he told me. I asked Keith what was the most valuable album in the shop, and figured it

would be something produced by the Beatles. He actually had a copy of their very first release, as well as a pristine Abbey Road that was still sealed in the wrapper, and had never been opened. I could have stayed in Vinyl Revival all day and never come to the end of the treasures there. If you are looking for that special album, Keith will get on the trail of it for you, and if it can be found, he’ll find it.

Another feature of the shop is the mezzanine floor upstairs, which has been converted into a venue for movies as well as concerts. Keith purchased some of the theatre seats from Athens Bible School and will be showing Indie films on Friday nights. They also have hosted fresh-air concerts outside on the patio, featuring local bands, and are looking to be a place where musical groups can get both exposure and experience before audiences.

Live music or record albums, Vinyl Revival is the place to go, and Keith Montgomery is the guy who loves what he does, and is ready to help.

Our Constitution acts like an enormous unifier, uniting a group of states with different interests, laws, and cultures. Under America’s first national government, the Articles of Confederation, the states acted together only for specific purposes.

The Constitution united all of its citizens as members of a whole, consigning the power of the union to its people. Without this document, the American Experiment might have ended as quickly as it had begun.

Article One of the Constitution established the power of Congress. Article Two established the power of the President. Article Three established the power of the Supreme Court. Article Four gives full faith and credit to the laws of each state. Article Five states that when Congress proposes an amendment it has to be ratified by 3/4 of the states. Article Six states that the Constitution shall be the supreme law of the land. Article Seven states that nine of the thirteen states had to ratify the constitution for it to be legal.

The Good Part!

Career Development Facilitator “Impact, Engage, Grow” Community Matters So much to do and so little time to get it all accomplished. I am a doer and a worker bee, my husband would say.

Yes, without a doubt that indeed is me! I am always involved in this group or that project having millions of thoughts running through my mind regarding objectives, checklists, tasks, contacts, and of course, the list just goes on and on.

Do you know someone like this? Yes, you do! These are the individuals who never really stop to take a break. They are always on the go to an activity, meeting, or planning the next event. Don’t you just want to say to them BE STILL, STOP, AND ENJOY THE MOMENT? Well, maybe that person is you! Doesn’t it getting really exhausting trying to hold all that information together and actually be successful with the outcomes? We can be so busy doing all day long and all night long that we never enjoy what the Lord has given us an opportunity to receive. How often do we choose to let “doing” consume us instead of “enjoying” and “being” present in the events of our lives.

Think about those birthday parties or special occasion events we plan for our loved

Welcome To The Classroom Of ‘Horse Breeds’

With school in full swing, I thought it would be fun to give someone the opportunity to engage in an equine classroom with the possibility of winning a $10 Amazon gift card. Interested?

The class is Horse Breeds.

I’m going to list a number of different breeds of horses. Match the breed to the statements that are in character with that specific breed.

The horse breeds are as follow:

A - This horse holds the record for the world’s biggest horse. Sampson foaled in 1846 in Toddington Mills, Bedfordshire, England; stood 7 feet 2 ½ inches. His peak weight was estimated at over 3,300 pounds. This breed is referred to as a draft horse.

B - This breed can be traced to medieval times when writings told of an Oriental race of horse found in the Southern Tyrolean Mountains, which were once part of Austria, but now belong to northern Italy. Many of the villages and farms were accessible only by narrow paths, requiring agile, and sure-footed horses for transportation and packing.

C - Evolved from the prehistoric Celtic pony, developed in Wales. Known

for intelligence, speed, and soundness and is known for “heart” and endurance.

D - One of the world’s oldest and purest breeds. It has a strong neck, good feet, and a compact, muscular body. It has small brown marks over the eyes and on the checks and thighs. The ears bear dark outlines and tips.

E - Developed from a base of spotted horses with Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred bloodlines. One of the fastest growing breeds in the United States.

F - A breed from Russia. Elegant warm-blood horses with high withers, long legs, muscled neck, and back. Famous as show-jumping horses, long-distance races, and have won steeplechase races as well.

G - Originating in the region of northern Germany; thought to be the oldest of Warmblood breeds, tracing back to the 13th century. They are in high demand in dressage and show-jumping.

H - From a providence of the northern Netherlands.

During the Middle Ages, the ancestors of this breed were in great demand as war horses throughout continental Europe. This breed is said to have descended from the primitive Forest Horse.

I - This breed appeared in eastern Kentucky that gave rise to a line of horses prized by North American and European

owners.

An important indicator of this breed is a man named Sam Tuttle from Spout Springs, Kentucky, and a stallion named “Old Tobe.”

This sure-footed, gentle horse carried young, old, and inexperienced riders over the rugged mountain trails of Natural Bridge State Park where Sam held the concession for horseback riding. Old Tobe fathered many fine horses until the age of 37.

J - A hardy, free-roaming horse of the North American West, descending primarily from Iberian horses brought to the Americas in the 1500’s by the Spanish conquistadors. Most of these horses were of Andalusian, Arabian, and Barb ancestry. In 1971, the US Congress recognized this breed as “living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West,” which continue to “contribute to the diversity of life forms with the Nation and enrich the lives of the American people.”

and Moorland or Native pony breeds of the British Isles, valued for its hardiness, strength, and sureness of foot.

Many can be seen running loose in southern England. References can be found as far back as 1016.

L - The largest of Britain’s nine native breeds.

Its pedigree dates back to the 1880s. Once a workhorse in the Scottish mainland and islands, today it is used for trekking and general riding. Some say the ancestors of this breed lived in Scotland before the Ice Age, and over time, the breed has been influenced by the horses of invading armies and by various out-crossings.

Mental Health Minute

Domestic Violence And Mental Illness

“Relationships are like glass. Sometimes it’s better to leave them broken than to hurt yourself putting them back together.”

- Unknown October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. According to the National Violence Hotline, a common assumption is that domestic abuse can be attributed to the partner’s mental health condition.

Some of the mental illnesses considered are bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD,) narcissistic personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, and antisocial personality disorder. And while these are serious mental illnesses, they are not the cause for domestic abuse. In fact, there is nothing in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition, (DSM-5) that states that mental illness solely is the cause for a partner to be abusive. However, there are a number of diagnoses that can increase the risk for abusive patterns to appear, not only in a relationship, but in other areas of life. When a person is mentally ill, all areas of his or her life are affected.

In contrast, abuse typically only impacts a personal relationship.

relationships -- meaning that an abusive partner will not show their negative or harmful actions toward friends, co-workers, or other family members.

The abusive partner is able to portray a front that is all happy and well to the rest of the world. But when it’s just the partner and victim, a different side of the abuser comes out. The impact of being the only person to see this behavior is isolating for the victim, as they may think that no one else will believe them.

This makes it easier for the abuser to make the partner feel responsible for the abusive behavior, reinforcing the isolation. Sound familiar? (See my article on Gaslighting from June 21, 2019.) In the case of domestic violence, it would then follow that the abusive partner may have an “unhealthy” value system rather than a mental illness.

If the abuse was caused by a mental illness, the perpetrator would also yell and/or hit friends, family, and coworkers when upset. I will acknowledge that there are times when there appears to be a correlation between domestic abuse and mental illness.

Some people struggle with mental illness and are also abusive to a partner, just as some people have a mental illness and are supportive partners.

I believe it is important to keep in mind that the mental illness and the abusive behaviors need to be identified and addressed separately. Unfortunately, many abusers do not accept responsibility for their actions. There is no admission of harm, so they choose not to seek professional help or even show a willingness to change.

If that’s the case, then the

abuser tends to continue mistreatment, which escalates over time. Why Does He Do That is a book written

by Lundy Bancroft, which attempts to clarify whether what a partner is doing is abuse or abuse with mental illness. She includes several questions to ask that might help to answer that question: Does the abusive partner yell, scream, or hit others outside of the relationship?

Does the abusive partner make others check in to see where they are and who they are with?

Does the abusive partner verbally tear down others?

Does the abusive partner pressure others to do things that they would rather not do?

Does the abusive partner threaten others?

If the answer to these questions is no, then most likely the abuser is not suffering

from a mental illness. If the answer to these questions is yes, then it is possible that the abuser is experiencing some form of mental illness. Even if a partner has a mental illness, that is never an excuse for abuse. Abuse is a choice someone makes in order to maintain power and control. The Alternative Approach

Repeating Failure

by Roy Williams America is repeating the failures of our foundational belief system. Our Founding Fathers used the Old Testament laws to write the Constitution to form a legal system that was designed to make sure the law represented what was best for the people, not the government.

Years after the Israelites entered the Promised Land and the Law was given, the leaders created rules to go with the law to clarify points that they felt were unclear. They began to prioritize what they thought were the most important pieces, which they could use to judge one another on how good they thought they were at following the law. In other words, man decided to improve on what God had given. As a result, the law became overbearing and the man-made rules that governed every aspect of a person’s life grew until no one could adhere to them.

Compare that to where we are in today’s society.

The legal system, including the tax code, is so overwhelming, so complicated, that no one can fully understand exactly how to meet all their requirements.

Just like in the Old Testament, our politicians continue to write laws that are not designed to help or protect the public. Over half the laws are nothing more than a way to give the politicians more control over our lives. And our tax laws serve no purpose other than to take our hard-earned money and make more people dependent on their handouts, to create more government jobs, or to enrich the politicians.

Power and control is the theme in the political system today and that includes the FDA, which I often refer to as the False Data Administration because they only approve a food that the food industry has paid them to approve to enrich themselves, or the pharmaceutical industry has paid them to approve so they can continue to charge outrageous prices for their drugs to enrich themselves.

When you ignore history, you are destined to repeat the same mistakes.

That is where we are today. The more laws they pass, the more crimes are committed. They haven’t cured a single disease in over 60 years. Not because they can’t find the cures but because there is

simply too much money in treating the symptoms of disease.

We have been repeating the same failures for so many years that it has become an embarrassment. Even though chemotherapy and radiation continue to fail to cure cancer, they keep on making new forms of the same poisons. Pain killers are killing more people every year than any war, and even though we now know that they are addictive and deadly, they keep on prescribing them.

The reason they keep on using the same toxic, synthetic drugs is because the FDA and our politicians work hand in hand with the pharmaceutical industry. The FDA will not even consider doing a double-blind, placebocontrolled study on anything that might be competitive.

As a result, we are simply going in circles, which reminds me of the definition of insanity: “Insanity

is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different outcome.”

You cannot cure disease using synthetic drugs any more than you can come back from a place you have never been. You cannot solve the problems in society with more laws any more than you can build a house without the materials that are necessary for the construction.

The only way to cure disease is to stop the causes of disease. Passing more laws will not stop criminals from committing crimes. The only way to cut the crime rate is to put God back in our society, including our schools, our businesses, and our households.

It is time for us, the American people, to demand true change from the top down. Our system has become corrupt. The Bible teaches us that, “The love of money is the root of all evil.” America has made

money her god.

We finally have a president that is willing to call a spade a spade. He is truly trying to drain the swamp. Of course, the powers that want you to stay in their control will do everything in their power to deceive you. They will continue to use character assignation to try and destroy anyone who wants to give the power back to “We the People.”

It’s time to decide about our politics and our healthcare. Are we going to do it man’s way using his conceited ideas and concoctions or God’s way using His natural laws and His creations?
