Crown Service Of Alabama, LLC: Here To Help

By Ali Elizabeth Turner Earlier this week, I asked Wayne Hemmerly, vicepresident and co-founder of Crown Service of Alabama, LLC, why he does what he does. After all, not everyone can face down everything from crawlspace critters to cockroaches on a daily basis. He simply smiled and said, “I have been in crawlspaces since I was 12, and my basic make-up is to help people.” This is a guy who will crawl around under your house and let you know what is going on with very few concerns regarding what may be down there, except for when it comes to snakes. “I don’t do snakes,” he says with unmistakable conviction. My husband, Steve, has a saying for which I am truly thankful, even when it irritates me. That statement is, “Words mean things.” I have always endeavored to be a clear communicator, but having Coach Turner in my life for the last near-quarter century has meant over the years that I pay closer attention to detail when it comes to what I say. It also means resisting the temptation to defer to the “Cliff Notes of Communication,” and assume that people just know what I mean. My learning curve continues…

The Washington Post could have used a guy like Steve Turner to call them on one of the worst examples of wordsmithery I have ever seen. They might have been miffed, but they would not be winning the journalistic version of a Razzberry Award for their headline regarding the death of Abu Bakr-al Baghdadi, who was killed earlier this week in a stunningly executed raid. Here was their first pass at it: “Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, Islamic State’s ‘terroristin-chief,’ dead at 48.”

As far as most folks are concerned, that said it all. However, there was predictable push-back, so the Washington Post

jumped in the other ditch with a result that was cringe-worthy: “Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, austere religious scholar at helm of Islamic State, dies at 48.”

It’s times like these that I am so glad Steve and I actually own Athens Now, and don’t have to march to the drum of political correctness. We

do, however, realize that we will be held accountable for every word that leaves our lips.

This sanitized opening line to an officious obit would be laughable if the guy had not been inarguably evil. Who says stuff like, “austere religious scholar at helm of Islamic State”? Now, John Calvin could rightfully be described as an “austere religious scholar,” and the rules in Geneva, Switzerland under his leadership were mighty

strict for everyone. But John Calvin was no rapist, as strong evidence indicates was the case when it came to al-Baghdadi.

As the leader of ISIS, Al-Baghdadi headed up the group responsible for horrific videos of executions, including one in 2014 that showed the beheading of an American

journalist by the name of James Foley. Al-Baghdadi repeatedly raped and tortured Arizona aid worker Kayla Mueller after she was taken hostage in 2013. She died in 2015 under still unclear circumstances, but was a remarkable witness to the strength of God as attested by those around her. The great irony is that she was forced into a “marriage” with AlBaghdadi, and pictures of her body showed her in a burqa and having

bruises on her face. Why would an “austere religious scholar” marry an infidel? Because that is the true nature of jihad, and rape is justified by the hadiths.

So back to the woeful world of Washington Post wordsmithery. After significant pushback and outcry, WaPo revised their headline a third time

by changing it to “Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, extremist leader of Islamic State, dies at 48.” I suppose that’s a start. Now, if we could just get Wikipedia to quit using the term “years of service,” when it comes to Al-Baghdadi, I’d be a happier girl.

The Blackhawk Down CommUNITY Breakfast

I will never forget the day in January of 2002 when I watched the film Blackhawk Down in a movie theatre in Roswell, New Mexico. It was during what Steve and I have affectionately come to call the “bugon-the-windshield” era of our lives, when “nearly everything had gone splat.” Steve was seriously ill; we were in Roswell living with friends and trying to get him well. And 9/11 had happened 4 months previously. The threat of jihad was on everyone’s mind, but that night over movie popcorn and listening through a surround sound system, I had to think about something that I genuinely had never previously considered: my stepson, Kim, and my son, Gabe, were still of military service age. The kind of thing that happened in Mogadishu in 1993 had just invaded my emotional space in no uncertain terms, and frankly I was kind of shaken. Neither of our sons had volunteered to serve in the armed forces, which certainly was and still is a privilege in our nation, but I had to wonder, could this ever be something they would face, and if so, how would I handle it?

He lives “next door” in Madison, and is the founder of Pinnacle Solutions, an aerospace company based in Huntsville. Pinnacle has a motto worthy of adopting: Mission First, People Always. They also have crafted a workplace culture that is rare in the aerospace industry, one of empowerment, excellence, and positivity.

As part of our city’s celebration of Veterans’ Day, the Athens State University Center for Lifelong Learning is sponsoring a breakfast free of charge and open to the public featuring Durant as the speaker. It will be held from 8:30 to 10 a.m. at the Center, which is located at 121 S Marion St in Athens. It is part of the CommUNITY Breakfast series, and when we went to print, there were about 25 spaces left. There is a date in December that Doug Gates remembers as readily as he remembers Christmas.

On Dec. 9, 2011, Gates was part of a small group from Athens Rotary that met with Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks at the abandoned Pilgrim’s Pride site. The group told Mayor Marks that he and Councilman Jimmy Gill, who has since died, were working to address dilapidated and unsafe structures throughout the city, and said, “Here is your worst site. We’ve got to do something.”

Pilgrim’s Pride closed the processing plant that employed 640 workers in 2009, leaving behind vacant buildings, holding ponds, and tanks surrounded by a chain link fence, near the city’s historic downtown and Athens State University.

By December 2014, city officials were meeting regularly with Pilgrim’s Pride about the property. Negotiations over price continued until the city and company agreed in 2017 on a price tag of $550,000. The Alabama Department of Environmental Management offered to do the Phase 1 and Phase 2 environmental studies, which showed no remediation required with the land.

The city hired firms to remove asbestos from

the old buildings and demolish the buildings.

The now cleared site is 32 acres and includes a creek with several bridge crossings.

On Nov. 4-7, the landscape architectural firm of Farmer Morgan will hold a series of public meetings to gather input from citizens about the future of the 32 acres. A steering committee comprised of stakeholders have discussed a park and a park with neighboring mixed-use residential/ commercial properties.

The steering committee met Monday, Oct. 28, to learn more about how

What Makes Ronnie Roll

“Zooming To Stonehaven”

by Ali Elizabeth Turner Most Monday mornings with Mayor Ronnie start out with a cup of coffee and settling in to discuss the topics for his column. However, today was going to be a “wee bit o’ history” because kids at Athens Elementary were going to be able to “go” to Stonehaven, Scotland, courtesy of Zoom, and we were going to be a part of it.

It took a while to get the technical glitches smoothed over, and then it was a joy to watch kids of all colors learn about places that had buildings that were close to a thousand years old, and ask questions that garnered answers given in a delightful Scottish brogue. “Bonnie! Bonnie good question,” we heard the Scots say.

Most people in the Athens area are aware that a group of citizens from our city with representatives from government, higher education, the public school system, and the arts made a trip on their own dime to Scotland this past summer, with the purpose of cementing what the Scots refer to as “twinning.” That is the same as having a sister city,

and the purpose is to foster exchange, goodwill, and cross-cultural relationships. The folks of Stonehaven matched the visiting Southerners when it came to hospitality, and housed the Alabamians in their homes, one of which was a literal castle.

The members of the Athens educational system could see the possibility of our kids and theirs participating in foreign exchange student opportunities. And one of the things that was particularly encouraging regarding the “Zoom exchange” was how the

Scots were aware of our history and made it come alive to the AES students who were assembled in front of the screen. The students learned that Benjamin Rush, one of the signers of the Constitution had strong ties to Scotland, where he received his degree in medicine. Rush is often referred to as the father of modern psychiatry.

The first person on the Zoom call was Ellen Wong, Consul General of the United States to Scotland. “Hi, y’all,” she said, and explained that she is from Missouri, and that is how she genuinely speaks.

She thanked the teachers for making this possible and “welcomed” the students to Scotland.

The kids were treated to a video tour of Kinneff Old Church, where the crown jewels of Scotland, or as the Scots call them, “The Honours of Scotland,” were hid-

den from the invading Oliver Cromwell. They were snuck over the side of Dunnotar Castle and down to a servant woman who hid them under her skirt. Then Rev. Grainger and his wife hid them beneath the pulpit at Kinneff where they were forgotten for many years. They were eventually moved to Edinburgh Castle, where they remain on display today, and during World War II, were divided up and hidden in various parts of the castle in the event that the Nazis were successful in conquering the United Kingdom. It wasn’t until 1953, when Queen Elizabeth was crowned, that they were finally brought out of hiding and presented to her. We were told, “They are the oldest crown jewels on the planet.”

Then the kids were given a great honor and invitation, and that was to enter a drawing contest.

As a gesture of goodwill and to “seal the twinning,” our Athens students have been asked by the equivalent of the mayor of Stonehaven to draw either Kinneff Old Church or Dunnottar Castle. The winners will receive a cash prize, but more importantly, the drawing will be displayed proudly on the walls of Kinneff Old Church for visitors from all over the world to see.

The deadline was set, the kids were abuzz, and then it was time to roll.

Do You Love God Or The World?

I cannot believe how fast this year has flown past! It is already the month of November.

We are already into month number eleven of 2019, and that means that the year 2020 is knocking on the door.

Can you believe it? I am completely blown away because I could not imagine as a child what it would be like in the year 2020. There were so many things that we had figured out 30 years ago but that we have gone completely mad about in today’s society.

For instance, thirty years ago people knew what bathroom to go to, yet today we have people confused on what their gender is. I am utterly amazed that we place more importance on what people think they are versus what they actually are.

I praise God my parents loved me enough to teach me right from wrong. We live in a society that worries about feelings and whether or not we might offend someone else, when in reality we are creating so many injustices because we cannot call things for what they are.

We have been rocked to sleep thinking that we should not judge others because of this scripture, but I point out 1 Corinthians 2:15 which states, “But he that is spiritual judgeth all things…” We all know the difference between right and wrong, but we live in a time that has made excuses for the derailment of our morality. We are quickly becoming a country no longer living out the words on our currency: “In God We Trust”.

I think about the words found in Judges 17:6,

We live in the day of fake news. We live in the day of people being guilty until proven innocent versus how it used to be -- innocent until proven guilty.

“...but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.” The day and age we live in is described perfectly by this one scripture in which people do whatever they want in their own eyes with no thought of their actions being immoral.

You look at the junk on television and it is no wonder why we live in perilous times. I recently heard a quote that I believe to be true concerning the Bible, “The Bible will keep you away from sin or sin will keep you away from the Bible.”

We must draw closer to Jesus Christ as our Lord

and Saviour. Not a popular topic as we are moving further away from our Christian roots. We have been compromising on so many aspects when it comes to our walk with God that we wash away what the Bible teaches.

We have watered down our relationship with Jesus Christ to become something we do and mark off our checklist.

We, as Christians, want to live as closely to the world as possible but still try to draw closer to Christ. When you look like the world, act like the world, talk like the world, before you know it the world will have influence over you. We need to let the Bible be the final rule of faith and practice; let’s go ahead and put this in practice!

In 1 John 2:15, we see, “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

I write all of these things simply because 2020 is right around the corner, and the world we live in is slipping away. The darkness is starting to creep in, and it is time Christians let their light shine upon the world.

Darkness hates the light because the wickedness gets exposed. What will you do in the upcoming months? -- Keep doing what you have been doing or cling to the one who hung on the old rugged cross?

This year, 2019, has been the fastest year of my life. It has moved with the speed of light. When I was younger, I heard older people say that time seemed to speed up, I didn’t fully understand what that meant until I got older as well. I can’t believe that there are only 2 more months left in 2019. That’s only 2 more months to make good on all those “New Year’s Resolutions.” How may of you are able to say you completed a resolution you made for yourself back in January? If I was going to guess, the percentage of those of us who have completed their resolutions would be very low.

just keep eating the cookies. But this time was different, I allowed myself to enjoy the cookie but continue to eat good, healthy food for the rest of the week.

I have struggled through the year to keep my commitment to better health. Have I been perfect? No, not by any stretch of the imagination. Have I stuck with the plan, even when I took a slight detour? Yes, I didn’t let myself be side-tracked by eating something I shouldn’t eat.

But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded. 2 Chronicles 15:7

When I made the decision to be healthier this year, I also made the decision not to be so hard on myself. I am by far my worst critic.

On any other diet, if I decided to have a cookie, I would beat myself up and decide that I wasn’t worth the hard work, what’s the point,

I’m excited for the last two months of the year. I’m excited to see how far I’ve come from January to December. I’m excited to see how far you all have come. Remember, health is not a number on a scale. It is your overall well-being. You may not fit into the size 6 dress, and that’s okay! Keep pressing on towards your goal! You can do this and I’m so proud of all of you!

This week’s recipe will help you stay on track, even when you aren’t wanting to eat something good for you. It is a delicious and healthy version of one of America’s favorite treats, Buffalo wings.

All the yummy flavors of fried wings drenched in a buttery sauce is transformed to a flavorful soup that won’t leave you feeling discouraged. Plus, this is a slow cooker recipe, so you can come home to this delicious soup after a long hard day. Eat up and enjoy!

Recipe #21: Buffalo Chicken Soup What You Need:

1 Tbsp olive oil ½ large onion, diced ½ cup celery, diced 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 lb. shredded chicken (a rotisserie chicken works great for this, and it’s a great short cut) 4 cups chicken broth 3 Tbsp Buffalo sauce (can use less if you don’t like it as spicy) 6 oz cream cheese, cubed ½ cup half & half

Directions:

Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add chopped onions and celery. Cook for about 10 minutes, until onions are translucent and start to brown.

Add garlic and sauté for about another minute or until garlic begins to soften.

Place the shredded chicken, broth, and Buffalo sauce in the slow cooker. Add onions, garlic, and celery into the cooker and stir.

Cook on low for 3-4 hours.

Remove a cup of the soup from the slow cooker and place it into a blender with the cream cheese. Puree until smooth.

You can just let the cream cheese melt into the soup if you would like, but blending it separately will help thicken the soup some.

Pour the mixture back into the slow cooker. Add the half & half and stir until smooth.

It All Comes Tumbling Down

Post-modern American society has become addicted to being arbitrators of fairness to the point of being cut off, similar to being turned away by a bartender when he or she has had enough. Those that have led the grievance culture are now calling it quits, and they are advising their fan bases to move past it.

Former President Obama stated that, “This idea of purity and you’re never compromised and you’re politically ‘woke’ and all that stuff—you should get over that quickly.” This perspective is surprisingly refreshing from a man who led his administration by purposefully targeting his detractors.

Obama went on to say, “The world is messy.

There are ambiguities.

People who do really good stuff have flaws.

People who you are fighting may love their kids, and, you know, share certain thing with you. One danger I see among young people particularly on college campuses..., I do get a sense sometimes now… there is… the way of making change is to be as judgmental as possi-

ble about other people…”

Whether or not former President Obama is fully aware of the weight of his conclusion, this is a positive revelation that ought to be sown into the shared American experience which has slowly been eroded.

Even now, we are witnessing a drastic change in Kanye West’s behavior due to his recent conversion to Christianity.

There is plenty of conjecture over whether his current state of mind is authentic, valuable, or healthy. Kanye’s expression is indeed messy and juvenile; however, he is manifesting virtues of hope, modesty, and devotion. In a recent interview Kanye stated, “I’ve spread a lot of things.

There was a time I was letting you know what high fashion had done for me, I was letting you know what Hennessey had done for me, but now I’m letting you know what Jesus has done for me, and in that I’m no longer a slave, I’m a son now, a son of God, I’m free.” Too many people, (religious or not), believe this declaration is foolish and pure zeal without

substance. Kanye’s fearless abandon is refreshing; careless at times, but still refreshing.

Everything that social justice, political correctness, and progressivism have aimed to dismantle has managed to fall spectacularly to tradition, religion, and human idiosyncrasy. I’m rather encouraged by the new developments, while there are plenty of those determined to demolish the very foundation upon which they stand.

Founding Father John Adams stated, “We think ourselves possessed, or at least we boast that we are so, of liberty of conscience on all subjects and of the right of free inquiry and private judg-

ment in all cases, and yet how far are we from these exalted privileges in fact…Now, what free inquiry, when a writer must surely encounter the risk of fine or imprisonment for adducing any arguments for investigation into the divine authority…But I cannot enlarge upon this subject, though I have it much at heart. I think such laws a great embarrassment, great obstructions to the improvement of the human mind.”

The Lowdown On Dairy

I think most of us have a love and weakness for some form of dairy. Be it extra cheese on our weekly pizza, a big bowl of ice cream on a hot day, or the coffee creamer we can’t live without each morning. There just seems to be something about dairy that makes things better. However, truth be told, most of us consume way too much dairy, and this can negatively affect several parts of our body and health that we don’t even real-

ize.

Now, I know that most of us grew up hearing, “Drink your milk so you will have strong bones and be healthy,” and your mom may have even had the “You can’t leave the dinner table until you drink your glass of milk” rule. While milk may have some health benefits, ultimately, the “side effects” outweigh them.

It is true that dairy products contain calcium which is associated with

strong bones, but the body can only absorb so much each day and the rest goes to waste. The body’s daily requirement is roughly 600mg and can be gained easily through nutrition.

More than that, medical research actually has revealed that ultimately milk has little to no effect on bone density. By eating things like broccoli, kale, spinach, cabbage, and other leafy greens, you can get all the calcium needed. It

is also worth noting that exercise and vitamin D gained from sunlight are important factors in the body’s ability to actively absorb the calcium.

Dairy, in itself, naturally creates more mucous in the human body, which on a basic level we know makes things such as ear infections, sinus infections, and congestion so much worse. It also tends to cause more inflammation all over the body. In today’s world, it has to be mentioned that GMOs and pesticides our cattle are exposed to play a role in what we then ingest. This affects the purity of milk which lowers the good nutrients and increases the level of fats which cause inflammation. Those who suffer from gout, arthritis, and other chronic diseases due to inflammation should keep their dairy consumption very low, and when you do consume it, I highly recommend using grassfed organic milk.

due to dairy consumption. If you suffer from chronic digestive problems, dairy could be your issue. You could have some lactose intolerance which irritates the gut line or even IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) which could be greatly improved by simply cutting out the dairy. Yet another disturbing side effect of too much dairy consumption can be a higher risk of cancer. And if this is not enough, it has also been shown that too much dairy early in life can be connected to insulin-dependent diabetes (childhood onset or type 1).

Keep in mind that these are all considerations when choosing what you put in your body. The better educated we are on foods, the better the decisions we are able to make. It’s not that dairy should not be consumed at all, but as in most things, it should be done so in moderation and with great thought as to your personal health issues and overall goals.

Wayne is from Tennessee, and grew up in his father’s construction business. He has also had a real estate license, and loves both professions. However, the day came when his wise dad said, “You are good at this, but you don’t have to do this. Go find what it is you were born to do.” Along his journey this included working in a funeral home, as well as in the field of executive protection. Wayne took care of high-level CEOs as well as several

Hollywood celebrities.

For twenty years, Wayne worked on the non-food side of the movie theatre industry, and was responsible for everything from the projectors to the sound systems to curtains to installing the seats, and more. Almost every successful entrepreneur has to go through at least one experience of getting fired, and Wayne was no exception. He found himself suddenly in need of work, attended a job fair, and was hired by a big-box pest control company. He worked for more than one company, and did well. During that time, he had colleagues who shared his desire to do it “better,

cheaper, build relationships and give excellent customer service.” Together they formed Crown Service of Alabama.

Crown Service of Alabama, LLC is unique in that it was born out of a need for realtors to comply with state law and provide what is known as a “termite letter” before a house can sell. A selling agent has to provide documentation that a termite inspection has been made by a company certified to do so. Recommendation for treatment is offered, but what Wayne likes to tell people is

up in a farming community. He and Wayne worked at the first bigbox pest control company at the same time, and they became best friends. Stephen had years in the food service industry, and like Wayne, found himself in need of employment.

Neither had planned on pest control becoming their career or owning their own business, and they are so glad they can help people and be friends while doing so.“Stephen is the level-headed one, and is my family here.” With humor Wayne mentioned that Stephen is a competition sporting clay shooter. They have an interesting leadership structure, and that is the role of president and vice-president rotate per their by-laws.

Currently Stephen is the president, Wayne is the VP, and that will change at some point when the need arises.

The Case of the Smarty Pants Would-Be Governor

It was the mid-1970s when an RV with Kentucky plates and escorted by two motorcycles headed south on I-65 and crossed into Alabama.

Limestone County Deputy Hargis (not real name) sat in his patrol car watching for speeders when the RV caught his attention.

Why was it being escorted by motorcycles?

He decided to check it out. He followed for a few miles before turning on his red light. The RV pulled over on the shoulder, and a middle-aged man wearing shorts and beach shirt stepped out.

“What’s the problem officer?”

“What’che haul’n?” asked Hargis.

“Nothing.”

“I’m gonna take a looksee,” said Hargis.

“Not if you don’t have a search warrant,” said the man. “I know the law, and you don’t have probable cause to board my vehicle and search.”

“I don’t need a search warrant – and don’t get smart,” warned Hargis.

An argument ensued.

Hargis boarded the RV and walked to the back, the man protesting all the way.

“Well, well, lookey here,” said Hargis.

Stacked in back of the RV were several cases of Kentucky beer. Alabama taxes hadn’t been paid, and that was a crime. Hargis explained that Limestone County

was “dry,” and it was illegal to possess alcohol.

And more seriously, Hargis was charging the man with transporting alcohol, which if convicted, could result in one to six years imprisonment, not to mention his RV would be confiscated and sold.

has been arrested in Limestone County and charged with a host of crimes. He needs a lawyer. He’ll probably run for Governor of Kentucky and the Alabama charges will ruin him.”

“You got to be kidding me!”

“What are the facts?” I asked.

“Well, he and his staff were going to Gulf Shores on a working vacation. They were preparing to prosecute a big criminal case in Kentucky and wanted to get away, enjoy some sunshine, and prepare the case, all at the same time. They were carrying beer, and he is charged with transporting. They are threatening to take his RV. I’d consider it a personal favor if you would help him out of this mess.”

Judge Rosenau didn’t cut any slack with anyone just because they were high and mighty. I have heard the story about the governor’s cabinet member busted for speeding in Limestone County.

The governor’s assistant called Judge and said the governor would appreciate it if he would dismiss the case. “You tell the governor to run Alabama and I’ll run my court in Limestone County. Have a nice day.”

“Don’t get smart with me,” warned Hargis for a second time.

Deputy Hargis wrote out the tickets charging the man with speeding, transporting, violation of the prohibition law, and possession of alcohol on which Alabama tax hadn’t been paid.

Later that day, when Hargis filed the paperwork with the court clerk, he placed a small star in the upper right corner of each ticket. The cases went to Judge David L. Rosenau for eventual trial.

I was in my office when my secretary buzzed.

“Mister Wayman Sherrer is on the line.” Why would the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama be calling me? I wondered. Perhaps it was a social call. I had known Wayman, Marine, FBI agent, and lawyer from Oneonta, Alabama for at least 10 years. When Nixon was elected President in 1968, Wayman was appointed U.S. Attorney. Over the phone, we exchanged pleasantries, then Wayman said, “One of my fellow U.S. Attorneys in Kentucky

“I’ll see what I can do,” I said.

I visited Judge Rosenau and related the facts.

“Judge, they were going to the beach for a little relaxation and at the same time prepare for a

“Your client got smart with the deputy,” said Judge. “There was a star on the complaint. That means he caused trouble.

I don’t like that.”

I knew I faced an uphill battle.

Judge finally said, “Well, it’s the sheriff’s case, talk to him.”

I visited Sheriff Buddy Evans and explained what had happened.

“He’s law enforcement just like you,” I said.

“Anyway, he’s planning

to run for governor in Kentucky and this case will kill his chance to win.”

Buddy wasn’t impressed.

“And there’s another reason,” I said. “The deputy didn’t have probable cause to stop the RV and search it without a warrant. All evidence of the illegal search will be excluded from evidence.”

Buddy saw the problem.

“The only case left to prosecute is speeding.”

I said.

I never sent the wouldbe governor a bill for my services and don’t know if he ever ran for governor; he never called and thanked me for snatching him from the clutches of justice.

“Getting smart” is not a crime, but we older Southerners know that getting smart with your mama will get your jaws slapped. My advice is don’t be a smarty pants with your mama or with a policeman – no matter who you are.

Dog Barker

Doorbells and Driveway Alarms

Hello folks! Anyone ever have a dog that barks if the neighbor even flushes their toilet? Well, I have a driveway alarm and doorbell that stays pretty active. If anyone pulls into my driveway or even approaches my door, nine times out of ten, I know.

I have a “Zoey” driveway alarm that seems to just know when someone pulls into my drive or even slows down in front of my house. Sometimes, one of my Danes peers out the window, but Zoey is too short. I laugh when I see my pack looking or trying to look out the window.

My doorbell is a “Minnie” doorbell. She peers through the blinds at anyone approaching, and she barks, letting anyone in earshot know, “I see you out there!” At times, the barking can be a nuisance, but I take their alerts seriously. There are times I think my crew likes to bark just to watch me go to the door

and look out. When no one is there, I always say, “No one is here! Why are you barking?” Of course, I get the looks like, “What?! I thought someone was there!”

And as if I am lying to them, they peer past my legs and look out the door to make sure I’ve missed nothing.

WOW! Really?! I also have a sign on my door that says, “Don’t knock unless you are my neighbor!

Call my cell phone!”

So, what can be done to teach our dogs not to bark at just anything? I know some of us have a dog that will bark if the wind blows. For that I cannot help, but the doorbell problem I can.

Let’s start with doorbell training. Ring your doorbell and watch the reaction of your dog. Is your dog barking and acting out? I recommend ringing the doorbell again every few minutes and

walk your dog to the door. Show them that no one is there. What we are trying to do is desensitize them to hearing the doorbell. It may take a few times before your dog stops reacting to the doorbell. Reward them every time they do not react to the doorbell ringing. Remember, every time they react be

sure to show them no one is there.

Now, let us change the game a bit. Have someone go outside and ring the doorbell. Take your dog to the door and let them see a familiar face standing outside the door. So when this can be done without your dog barking, praise and reward. This also may take a while to train.

Just have patience.

Let’s say your doorbell does not work or there is not one, and every time someone knocks, your dog goes crazy.

How can we handle this? First, stop rolling your eyes and think about how we trained for the doorbell. Start knocking on walls and doors. When your dog reacts, correct them by saying, “No or eh eh!” When they are quiet again, tell them, “Good.” Repeat this

method and also incorporate knocking on the main door to the house.

Every time this is done, show them that there is no one there. Eventually, I would recommend training with someone knocking on your door and training your dog the same as the doorbell method.

Eventually your dog will stop alerting at any bump or ringing of the doorbell, and peace may return to your home.

Remember to be patient throughout this training.

“Remember to love your dogs because they love you. Maybe not the way you want them to, like chewing up your favorite shoes or what not, but that is just love chewing. Be thankful for the time you have with them always.”

Irrational vs. Rational Thinking

- Epictetus There are many ways to interpret the events in your daily life. But, how can you know which perceptions are reasonable and which ones tend to be determined inaccurately? The best place to start is by learning about and recognizing our irrational thinking. Why start with the problem thoughts? America Is Starving to Death

by Roy Williams You might be thinking, how it is possible that we are starving when we have more access to food than any other nation on earth? The fact is, almost all disease in America is tied directly to malnourishment.

Most people don’t understand the simple fact that you can literally starve to death even if you are eating three meals a day. An example is that many people have starved because all they had to eat was rabbit. Yes, rabbit is a good source of protein, but it has no fat. When you eat a diet of protein without fat, you will die because you are not getting the essential fatty acids.

Malnourishment occurs when your food does not contain proper nutrients.

If you don’t get enough magnesium, you can have a heart attack due to heart palpitations and calcification of the arteries. Don’t get enough calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D and you can die from bone loss.

No, your doctor will not put on your death certificate that you died from malnourishment, but that is exactly what you

died from.

The true definition of starvation: Starvation is the result of a lack of the nutrients that are necessary to maintain cellular regeneration.

All cells of the human body are created through cell division. The new cell is manufactured from nutrients. As the cell ages, it can become damaged, weakened due to toxicities and aging.

Eventually, the cell will die.

Your body is constantly manufacturing new cells to replace the damaged and dying cells. If that process ever stops, you will eventually die. Every part of your body -your organs, your muscle, your bones, and your blood -- are made up of cells. When the cells are not receiving the proper nutrients, you begin the process of starvation.

When enough of the organs, muscles, bones, and blood are starved, the person will simply cease to exist as a living organism.

Almost all disease can be the result of malnutrition, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis, fibromy-

algia, chronic fatigue, osteoporosis, autoimmune disorders, and even gout. There are 36 nutrients that you must have in your diet or you will most definitely develop heart disease.

Mineral deficiencies will eventually cause osteoporosis, gout, arthritis, and muscle and nerve disorders, just to name a few.

Remember, a person can die from malnourishment even when their bellies are full. If all you eat are carbohydrates, you will eventually starve to death due to a lack of vitamins, minerals, proteins, and essential fatty acids.

Processed sugar is pure carbohydrate but has no vitamins, minerals, amino acids, or protein.

If all you eat is fat, you will eventually die from a lack of protein and vitamins.

It takes a balanced diet to maintain a healthy body.

Each day you should make sure your food contains 16 vitamins, 74 minerals and trace elements, 12 amino acids, 3 essential fatty acids, and a lot of protein. If you are getting enough of each of those, and you are digesting and have good absorption, you should never starve or become malnourished. What is even more interesting is that when you do consume proper amounts of those nutrients, you have reduced your risk of deficiency disorders
