Children Of Fallen Patriots

In 1989, in the brief time we were at war with Panama, 23 of our brave warriors lost their lives. One was a young husband with a baby girl on the way.

His name was Sgt. William Delaney Gibbs from the 7th Infantry Division, and he died five days before Christmas. His battle buddy was David Kim, and Kim returned to the States, establishing a charity organization for children such as Gibbs’ daughter. Children of Fallen Patriots has the specific purpose of providing college scholarships for Gold Star families.

Children of Fallen Patriots hired the Lucas Group to research the nearly 20,000 known dependents of troops who died in the line of duty in the last 35 years. The problem is that there is no central database that

So, I really wanted to go here and I have friends in the area, it was just perfect.”

What Makes Ronnie Roll

Enjoy The Ride, Part 5

by Ali Elizabeth Turner Since January we have been showcasing a book entitled, Enjoy The Ride,

by Steve Gilliland, who is a presenter Mayor Ronnie had the chance to hear speak as well as briefly speak with himself at a conference. The subtitle is, The true joy of life is in the trip! This is going to be the last in this particular series, and I can’t wait to see what we are going to tackle next. One of the things I have appreciated over the years is the Mayor’s quest to grow our city well, and at the same time grow himself well.

Personal development is never easy, progress can be and feel painfully slow, and I appreciate his commitment to never stop. If I may co-opt one of his sayings, “Golly bum, I wish more folks thought like that.”

As always, it had been a whirlwind of a week that was highlighted by an important milestone: his 50th wedding anniversary. He showed me the pictures of their special weekend away, and then we talked about all that was coming up, as well as how to wrap a bow around the series.

First off, Relay for Life is Friday, May 4th. This

is something in which our town has participated wholeheartedly for many years, and honor given to those who are battling, who have survived, and who have passed on is always moving. Mayor Marks and County Commissioner Mark Yarbrough declared the week of April 30 through May

4th “Paint the Town Purple Week” in honor of Relay, and in this 200th year for our city, county and state, the slogan is, “Hope, Fight, Relay.” The event is being held beginning at 6pm at the Limestone County Event Center, located at 114 Pryor Street in Athens, right across from the Veterans’ Museum.

dents who are members of the Interact Club sponsored the Color Run 5K on April 28th. The purpose of the 5 K is to raise funds for charity, and this year’s focus is clean water. If you participate in the color run, you have to be willing to be coated in non-toxic color powder that is specially selected for the event. The color

Great Pyramids, the Taj Mahal, the Grand Canyon, the Panama Canal, the Empire State Building, St. Peter’s Basilica, and the Great Wall of China.

While gathering the votes, the teacher noted that one quiet student hadn’t turned in her paper yet.

So she asked the girl if she was having trouble with her list. The girl replied, “Yes, a little. I couldn’t quite make up my mind because there were so many.” The teacher said, “Well, tell us what you have, and maybe we can help.” The girl hesitated, then read, “I think the Seven Wonders of the World are: to see, to hear, to touch, to taste, to feel, to laugh, and to love.”

Then, as is fitting in this Relay for Life season, Gilliland told of a time when he spoke at an American Cancer Society Survivor Dinner. He asked the audience, largely populated by survivors, the same question. Their answer?

80% said, “Life.” We purposed by God’s grace to Enjoy the ride, and then we prayed once again to do just that. Then it was time for Ronnie to roll.

You Can Never Get Today Back

D.A. Slinkard is the manager of the Athens Staples store the tasks over the three categories, and what seemed impossible now has come to fruition. We cannot eat the elephant whole, but we can do it one bite at a time, and doing so will help us reach our full potential.

Recently, I had the opportunity to speak to Girl Scout Troop #1922 pertaining to a positive mental mindset. I am going to ask you the very questions I asked them, and by a show of hands, please tell me who would be excited if you woke up tomorrow morning with $86,400 deposited into your bank account? Go ahead, raise your hand, and keep it up high.

We can all agree that we would love to have $86,400 deposited into our very own bank account. Now, let’s expand on that premise in that every day you get $86,400 deposited into your bank account; HOWEVER, you cannot keep the money from one day to the next.

You’re reading that correctly, in that tomorrow you get $86,400, but what money you do not spend, you cannot carry over to the next day. If you don’t use it, you lose it. Who, reading this article, would make sure they would spend the entire $86,400 tomorrow knowing they could not keep one penny from the amount? I am guessing that the readers of Athens Now are in much the same mindset as the Girl Scout troop because there was a clear consensus that everyone would spend their money.

We need to put this into perspective in that

With the thought process of spending every 86,400 seconds and utilizing the three categories of goal processing, what are you going to do differently to change your life? We cannot get last week back; we cannot get today back; all we can do is make the most of our present time and our future. We have the ability to control our future, but we must first learn to control our actions. Life is all about the decisions we make on a daily basis and our lives, whether good or bad, are the direct result of the choices we make. every one of us on this earth has 24 hours in a day. There are 60 minutes per hour and 60 seconds per minute. If we do the math correctly, we find that 24 x 60 x 60 equates to 86,400 seconds. Every one of us has the same amount of time deposited into our daily lives; but what are we doing with the deposit? Just like the money example from above, we cannot take time from today and add it to tomorrow. It does not matter how much money you have, there is no one who can buy more time. How many of us are wasting our

days away all because we choose not to spend our time wisely?

A few articles back, I mentioned how we should look at shorter time frames when it comes to our goals. The shorter time frame to accomplish the goal means we have to be more aggressive in our actions.

The majority of people fail not because their goals are too big; most people fail because they do not take the right amount of actions to achieve their goals. We all want to dream big, but we fail to realize the proper amount of ac-

tion we must take to be successful. When you are thinking about your goals, I highly suggest you look at your goals in three separate categories. These categories are: 0-3 months, 4-6 months, 7-12 months.

Typically your goal for 7-12 months will be a culmination of steps you need to take in months 0-6 to find success. If your goal is to write a book within 12 months, this could seem very daunting and potentially impossible to achieve.

However, with the proper goal-setting, an individual could break down

The majority of people walk around with the feelings of remorse and regret for what they have not done with their life. Why? Why are we hanging on to what we have not done when we should be thinking about everything we could be doing? If this is you, why are you partaking in this trap?

What we need to realize is that our daily deposit starts over each and every day, and the question becomes what are we going to do about it? It is time for you to think about the life you want to live, what steps you must take, and then go do it.

May is full of outdoor and community activities in Limestone County that are perfect for unplugging from the digital world, building memories, and making friends especially during Screen-free Week May 1-7 – a time to encourage your children (and yourself) to put down the screens and explore the world around them.

With the arrival of May’s flowers comes the return of several annual events that recur monthly during the summer months – Friday After Five and Art After Hours in downtown Athens on the second Friday, followed by Summer Concert Series: Singing on the Square on the third Friday on the Marion Street side of the Limestone County Courthouse. These family-friendly events offer a chance to explore the shops and dining downtown plus music, art and more.

The “Greatest Show On Dirt” returns to the Limestone County Sheriff’s Arena during National Police Week – a time to recognize and honor our fallen law enforcement officers -- and what a great way to recognize and support the Limestone County Sheriff’s Department. This annual event will bring competitors and spectators from near and far filling our hotels and RV parks and boosting our economy. This week-long series of events kicks off May 12 with

Alabama Veterans Museum & Archives, Remembering Our Past…

Inspiring Our Future Capital Campaign

by Sandra Thompson, Director, Alabama Veterans’ Museum If you have been by the museum lately, you will have noticed a lot going on outside. Thanks to the Limestone County Commission and Hawkins Ground Works, we have taken the first step in the dream of our expansion becoming a reality.

The platform has been demolished. We would have loved to have kept it and made it part of our new building design, however, it was just too far gone and was on its way to becoming a safety hazard. As we are all about preserving history, I am happy to say that the sheds covering the dock have been moved to a new home and will be preserved for future generations to use.

The mission of the Alabama Veterans Museum & Archives is to develop and maintain a museum for the preservation of archives and artifacts that exemplify the achievements and memories of our armed forces veterans. We will serve as a focal point for local veterans’ events and provide information to educate and inspire future generations to pursue military careers.

Over 12,000 people visit the Alabama Veterans Museum & Archives annually, making it the tourist attraction with the highest visitation in Limestone County. We are proud of the way we continue to honor our veterans for the sacrifices they have made, and inspire younger genera-

Girl Scout Troop 1922 had a wonderful demonstration at their booth about water pollution. Guests were invited to try to clean litter and dirt from a large container of water, only to find that it was impossible to remove everything. Our water supply is critical to our survival, and we should be very conscious of the fact that much of our litter is washed into our waterways, causing serious pollution.

Wings to Soar provided an amazing presentation on birds of prey. The Bald Eagle, our country’s national bird, is doing well since the pesticide DDT was banned from use. This chemical caused the birds to lay eggs with very thin shells which would break under the bird’s weight. Babies that did hatch were born with birth de-

fects leaving them unable to fend for themselves. The Bald Eagle was near extinction until people who care forced change.

These good people saved these beautiful creatures who suffered from man’s actions.

When I Grow Up...

As we travel through this journey called life, many people will pass in and out of our lives. There are a special few people that make an impact and help mold and shape your life. They affect your soul and heart. These angels on earth are able to hold our hands and guide us to be better people, the best versions of ourselves.

One of these angels in my life gained her heavenly reward a few weeks ago. While my earthly heart is broken, my spirit is rejoicing and celebrating her incredible life.

Linda was the wife of my minister from my childhood church. She embodied all things good and kind. I never remember her beautiful face without a smile. Her eyes were bright, gentle, and full of love. Her voice was soothing and pleasant. She embodied Proverbs 16:24 “Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body.”

Always supportive and devoted, she dedicated her life to her husband and her two children. Her commitment to the church and the members was evident to everyone she came in contact with. During church potlucks, everyone wanted to know what Linda made. While my grandfather was battling cancer, numerous times Linda would show up at their home with a delicious meal. She had a true servant’s heart.

Linda cooked simple food by some’s standards, but ask anyone who had the pleasure of eating her food, and they

would be quick to tell you that she was one of the best cooks in all of Alabama. When you put your love in your food, people know. They can taste your care for them. They knew Linda cooked with all the love she had. Her delicious food became an outpouring of love, hope, care, and kindness to everyone she fed.

When you ask children what they want to be when they grow up, you will get a variety of answers: doctor, president, teacher, baseball player. I will be 38 years old this year and still am trying to be Ms. Linda when I grow up. I strive to have her grace. I strive to have her kindness. I strive to have her love for fellow man. I strive to have her ability to always make you feel like you were the most important person while she talked to you. She had a special way to make you feel so special. I hope and pray that one day I may be remembered as even half of the woman she was.

I am honored to have called Linda my friend. She will be missed by many and always loved by all. The recipe today is one that she always made with love and is delicious. I hope you make it and share it with ones you love. Remember to cook it with love, and it will be the best dish anyone has ever eaten.

What You Need:

2 cups flour Icing 2 cups sugar ½ cup butter 2 sticks butter 2 Tbsp cocoa 1 cup Coca-Cola 6 Tbsp Coca-Cola ½ cup buttermilk 2 cup confectioner’s sugar 2 eggs, beaten 1 cup walnuts (optional) 1 tsp vanilla 1 ½ cups miniature marshmallows

Directions:

Combine flour and sugar in a mixing bowl. Heat butter, cocoa, and Coca-Cola to boiling point. Pour over flour and sugar. Mix thoroughly.

Add buttermilk, eggs, soda, vanilla, and marshmallows.

Mix well. Pour in a greased 9x13 pan. Bake at 350⁰F for 30-40 minutes.

As America’s purpose for a relationship with Israel has changed, so has America’s entertainment. Last month the movie Beirut, starring Jon Hamm and Rosamund Pike, was released.

For those of you who may not be familiar with the new and inarguably gorgeous senior living community located on Highway 72 and Lindsay Lane in Athens, you need to stop by and let the friendly staff take you on a tour. There is a lovely dining room with a chef, and activities galore-to-explore after you get up from the table with a real tablecloth. If you want to, you can do your own laundry, or if you need to, someone else will do it. Up the Gone-With-The-Wind-style staircase in the foyer, which leads you to the mezzanine, there is a grand piano that I have had the privilege of playing. I can tell you it is a fine instrument! There is a bistro, a library, a custom-chosen framed gallery of old historical photos of Athens, interesting field trips and outings, and most importantly, a staff that genuinely loves the residents.

Traditions of Athens recently completed several patio homes which encircle the building, and they are designed for seniors who at this point are completely self-sufficient and independent, but desire the security of a ready-made com-

munity. Traditions of Athens invites them to partake of the offered amenities, and looks out for their well-being and security.

Dana Hill is the director of the Athens facility, and during our time together, her eyes were twinkling over what she, the staff, and the residents have planned this year for AthensLimestone County. “We are doing a mystery dinner theatre with a Roaring ‘20s theme,” she said, “and Frank Travis is the guest celebrity director.” City Councilman Frank Travis has a personal interest in Traditions of Athens because his mother lives there. Dana went on to tell me that the culture amongst the residents is one of active engagement. “Many of our residents were successful professionals, and at our Resident Council meetings they made it very clear that they are not just interested in being ‘retiring’ in a retirement community, no matter how nice it is!”

To that end, they came up with the idea of doing the mystery dinner in order to raise funds for Unsung Heroes via Training Mature Minds. “Unsung Heroes had a gala fundraising dinner which got ‘swallowed up’ by one of the severe storms,” said Dana, “and this will help them get back on track.” Then she added, “And, it will be FUN!”

The residents of Traditions of Athens are not stopping with the Mystery Dinner Theater; they have come up with several things they want to do for us.

Beginning tonight, May 4, and every Friday night through the month of May, you can drive up to the circular drive and covered entrance, and be treated to free coffee from Starbuck’s, and freshly baked donuts from KMay’s. What the residents would like you to do is bring peanut butter, jelly, and mac & cheese for summer lunches for local children. Traditions of Athens is partnering with Limestone County Churches Involved (LCCI) and donations will be accepted at Traditions now through May 30.

“The residents are lit up about giving back,” Dana told me.

July is going to be School Supplies Month, in September Traditions will host a veterans’ program, in October there will be a coat drive in anticipation of the cold winter months, and in November there will be a toy drive just in time for the holidays. With regard to the Mystery Dinner Theatre event itself, there are several things you need to know. First of all, if you are someone who enjoys “getting into character by getting into costume,” you are welcome to come to the dinner dressed as a flapper or in a ‘20s style suit.

Dressing up is not required, and every female attendee will be

given a hand-made headband, complete with ostrich plume, as well as a string of faux pearls. The headbands have been crafted by the residents as part of their activities time in anticipation of the event.

There will be a scrumptious meal with a period-appropriate, signature dessert; and the meal and mystery will occur between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The evening’s festivities will be interactive, but there is no requirement to participate in solving the mystery. Knowing Frank, though, I am sure you will not be able to be just an observer for very long…

Tickets are $15 each, or $50 for a table of four. Reservations can be made by calling 256-444-3255, and you need to make them by May 15. For an evening of helping to solve a mystery while helping Athens be an even better place than it already is, make sure you save your spot soon. It’s sure to fill up!

With a well-balanced diet, most people can obtain all of the vitamins and minerals needed from foods. However, there are some circumstances in which the foods we eat may not provide all of the nutrients we need. Below are 5 of the most common deficiencies: Vitamin D is the most common nutrient deficiency. That is probably because there aren’t a lot of naturally occurring food sources of vitamin D; and the largest source of vitamin D—fortified dairy products like milk—tend to be foods that we eat less of as we grow older. Vitamin D is found in fatty fish like salmon and mackerel, as well as certain types of mushrooms. Your body forms vitamin D naturally when skin is exposed to sunlight. Adults aged 19-70 should aim to get 15 micrograms of vitamin D per day. If foods don't provide that amount, your healthcare provider may suggest a supplement.

Vitamin E is the next vitamin you may not be getting enough of. It is found in fatty foods such nuts, seeds and vegetable oils. Due to potential health risks associated with large doses of vitamin E pills, supplementation is not routinely recommended. Instead, shift your food intake to make sure you are eating a variety of healthful fats that will help you bump

up your vitamin E levels.

Magnesium is a mineral that plays a role in more than 300 enzymatic pathways in your body.

It helps make proteins, controls blood sugar and blood pressure, supports bone health, and is needed for making DNA, RNA, and the antioxidant glutathione.

Magnesium is found in dark green, leafy vegetables and whole grains.

Fortified foods, such as breakfast cereals, are also a good source of magnesium.

The Largest Outdoor Rodeo East Of The Mississippi

tors were “giving birth” to the first rodeo, they were long on vision and short on “rodeorunnin’ experience.” Sheriff Mike will be the first to tell you that he had just been a “redneck rodeo rider” in his youth, and the fact that our rodeo has grown into the largest outdoor rodeo east of the Mississippi River is the proof of hard work, tons of volunteers, trial and error, and most importantly, a community that believes in it. This year’s rodeo will be on May 19 and 20, with festivities beginning on May 12. It will be held at the Sheriff’s Rodeo Arena, which is located at 101 West Elm Street, Athens.

I spoke with Steve Young, who is the Public Affairs Officer for the Sheriff’s Department, and he told me, “The rodeo has developed into a successful model as a result of a lot of changes made over the years.” In other words, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” (My sass, not his). This is Steve’s “first rodeo” only in the sense that this year he is stepping into the event-organizer shoes of Paul Cain, who retired last winter. “Those are big shoes to fill,” we both agreed. Our rodeo is considered to be one of the top five outdoor rodeo events in the nation, and as always, it serves to purchase new equipment and training for our law enforcement personnel.

Over the years, Rodeo Week has gotten into a rhythm that we both anticipate and enjoy, and the complete list of activities can be seen on the rodeo Facebook page. Saturday, May 12, is the kickoff for the week’s festivities with the Rodeo Parade. It starts at the arena and winds through town. “Anyone can participate, and there is no entry fee,” said Steve.

That begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday the 15th is the street dance and the fashion show. It will be held on the Courthouse Square and starts at 6 p.m. Once again Jeff Whitlow Country will be providing the music; so come and get your boots scootin’! Thursday the 17th is the slack rodeo.

“Slack” refers to accommodating expert riders who may wish to compete but need to be at another event by Thursday or Friday.

The Special Needs Rodeo will be held on Friday, May 18, from 10 a.m. until 1p.m. This is wildly popular with the whole community, and as Steve said, “Nothing else the rest of the

week compares to this.” The Special Needs Rodeo was actually the brainchild of a former rodeo queen, and now they are part of rodeos all across the nation. Guys from Athens Utilities come and cook out. The Fire Department shows up, gives demonstrations, and the kids have the opportunity to get into the fire engines, under supervision, of course! The Lions Club gives train rides, and this year there are parents whose kids have gone through the Sheriff’s Mentor Camps who are volunteering in order to give back to the community that

Working part time at a daycare facility, along with breaking, training, and showing horses for Tidmore Performance Horses and Winsalot Stables, she also enjoys competing in rodeos – Barrel Racing, Breakaway Roping, and Team Roping. She teaches riding lessons to kids, and is highly involved in coaching “cowkids” to become their very best. Heather was the 1st Runner-up in the 2018 Miss Rodeo USA pageant competition, and the whole area is proud of her accomplishments.

The Limestone County Sheriff’s Rodeo is a completely family-friendly event, and it’s one you don’t want to miss.

Spring Has Sprung?

Spring has finally sprung and we can see flowers, trees, and bushes blooming up a storm of pollen in the wind.

Old magazines was number eight on the list. I have a stack of magazines that have recipes I have never cooked and decorating ideas I have never used. The Almanac says that planting in our area is between March 15 and April 15. I hope you have gotten to your pruning and planting. If not, it is a good time to do that.

This is also a good time to declutter, throw open the doors, and let the wind (and pollen) change the air in your house. Winter is always so stuffy and the first day I can open windows is always a great day. I know I will regret the pollen that comes in, but the air in the house is different and fresh.

I also like to declutter in the spring in preparation for our New Haven Community Yard Sale in the fall. It will probably take me six months to get that done. Comedian George Carlin once said “a house is just a place to keep your stuff while you go out and get more stuff.”

He Went In Peace -- Part II

Captain William E. “Bill” Winter, age 32, had departed his peaceful home in North Carolina on Mother’s Day leaving behind his wife, Melia, and two children, Michael, age 6, and Amanda, age 2 ½. It was a Marine’s life the price of freedom. Now he was in a war zone, part of a multinational peace-keeping force caught up in a civil war.

He missed his wife and children terribly, and counted the days until he could go home.

The Marines were sitting ducks with their hands tied.

They were ordered not to carry loaded weapons. “The natives are getting restless,” he wrote on August 10. “What is frustrating is we have their firing positions located with radar and could easily blow them away if we could shoot back.”

August 12: “Everybody busy filling sand bags and building bunkers… this place is going to come apart…”

August 24: “I’ve been in the Marine Corps over 10 years now. Seems like yesterday. I pray this will be our last separation.”

By September 14, they had been steadily shelled for two weeks. “… 4 KIA, 30 WIA. 82 more days to go.” He was pining for his family. “I realize how horribly lonesome I am for you. You fill a great emptiness in me… I sleep with my helmet and flak jacket right beside my bed… incoming about 3:45 p.m.; went on all night… 4 WIA…went to church Sunday…” Then, he listened to a Dolly Parton tape Melia had sent him.

September 28: He wrote that when he got home he would be assigned duty in Atlanta, and they would go looking for a house. Life would be normal again.

May 4 - May 17, 2018

October 9: “I feel like a spring getting wound up tighter and tighter. I just hope I get home before something gives…Marines killed last night on way to shower… I feel better writing you… I just feel all knotted up inside with no release valve.”

October 15: “Sniper killed a Marine and wounded another.”

Again, he wrote, “I feel like a spring wound up inside me that just keeps getting tighter.”

October 16: “51 days to go… went to church this morning.

That half hour helps a lot… I looked at your 3 beautiful faces in my picture and hurt from missing you.”

October 17: “Mike Ohler was killed by sniper last night… got him in the head. He died instantly. It’s frustrating to see armed terrorists move around in front of us and not being able to shoot until they do…”

October 18: “Mike Ohler’s death really bothers me. It makes me realize I should have said and done a lot of things I haven’t. I want you to know that I love you with all my heart. I’m so thankful I found you.”

October 19: “One of our convoys got hit by a car bomb this afternoon… wish I could hold you for just a few minutes.”

On Saturday night, October 22, Bill wrote a short letter to Melia and the children. “Another day down, everything’s been quiet today... I guess everyone is busy getting ready for Halloween. Wish I could be there.

I just wish I could be there period! I still miss you each day and love you very much. You are and always will be very special to me… All my love Bill.” He mailed the letter and went to bed. His bunk was located on the first floor of the four-story concrete, Marine barracks. Tomorrow was Sunday. He could sleep late if he wanted to, then perhaps, attend church.

Michael Winter, Mr and Mrs Winter, Amanda Winter, Lt Col James Livingston, Melissa Winter On Sunday morning, October 23, at 6:22 a.m., while Bill and fellow Marines slept, a yellow Mercedes-Benz truck barreled own the road at high speed heading toward the four-story Marine barracks. It was loaded with the equivalent of 12,000 lbs. of TNT. The driver was smiling. The truck ran over a concertina wire barrier and sped between sentry post 6 and 7 where both guards carried unloaded weapons. The truck came to rest beneath where Bill slept. A massive explosion lifted the building upward, then it collapsed into rubble.

On Fripp Island, near Beaufort, South Carolina, where Melia and the children were temporarily residing with her parents, the phone rang on Sunday morning. It was a lady who worked with her father at the Federal Credit Union.

“Are you watching the news?” she asked. “They just bombed the Marine barracks.” Melia turned on the TV and watched in horror. She immediately called Lt. Col. James Livingston who had been Bill’s CO in England. “Colonel, do you have the news on?” she asked.

“They just bombed the Marine barracks.”

“I’m calling Marine Headquarters right now,” he replied and hung up.

“I didn’t know if he was alive or dead,” says Melia. “Nobody knew anything at that point.

We were all watching TV, including the kids. Michael was 6 years old and understood the severity of the news. They just kept scrolling the names of the dead, and all we could do was watch.”

Wind had blown sand from the beach onto the walkway, and Melia busied herself clearing it off. “I went out and shoveled, shoveled, shoveled sand. It was nervous energy.” Meanwhile, she received Bill’s October 22 letter – his last one. Could he be alive? On November 6, Lt. Col. Livingston called Melia. “Just making sure you’re home. I’m coming out.”

She knew why. “No, you can tell me on the phone.”

“No, I’m coming out.”

Lt. Col. Livingston arrived and gave her the bad news: 220 Marines, 18 sailors, and 3 soldiers were dead, along with 128 wounded Americans. It was the worst one day loss of life in the Marine Corps since the Battle of Iwo Jima during WWII.

“They didn’t find Bill’s body,” Colonel Livingston said. “He was supposed to be in the building at the time, but they found no remains.”

No trace of Bill was found; no wedding ring, no nothing, only an empty wallet that once belonged to him. When he departed home on Mother’s Day, it was the last time she saw him. “I didn’t fall apart,” she told me. “I had to take care of the kids and my mom and dad.

We didn’t have Valium and Ambien back then. I didn’t go to counseling. Back then you didn’t do that. You do now, but not back then.”

On November 4, Melia attended a memorial service at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, and met President Reagan and the First Lady. Bill was posthumously promoted to major the same day. The following evening she was officially notified that Bill was dead. “It was the hardest 13 days of my life,” she told me.

The next day a flag-draped, empty coffin arrived at Dover Air Force Base, Maryland. It contained only the memory of Major Winter. The empty coffin was escorted to Athens. On Continued on page 23

No Chains! Bring That Dog In!

by Joel Allen Many years ago when I was a boy, my Aunt Angie and Uncle Herman rented a trailer in a trailer park off Hwy 72 going toward Rogersville. I would go and stay with them on occasion, and they had this dog named Bowser. Bowser was a German shepherd mixed with Dane we believe. He looked more shepherd, and he was really a big baby. One night when I was over there visiting, Bowser did not want to share Aunt Angie with me and he nipped me. Angie was not having it and put him outside on a chain.

We could hear poor Bowser wailing outside. Angie brought him back in and pointed at me and stated to him that he was never to nip me again. This dog actually pouted for a bit. He also understood and never nipped at anyone who was family

ever again.

Now, let’s talk about that dog seen outside chained up. Ever notice how wound up they seem, especially the younger ones? Notice how some get mean? Or how about the chained dog that loves kids, wants to play with them, gets overly excited, and their chain catches the child or person by the ankles causing a fall or bruising? Dogs are chained for many reasons.

Those reasons range from: "I don't want the dog in my house." "It's just a dog and it belongs outside." "I don't want dog hair in my house." or "We don't have a fence yet."

What's your excuse? Anyone reading this have a dog chained outside? A dog chained outside can hear everything going on. They

hear the laughter and joy coming from the house and most, if not all, wish they were a part of your lives.

If they seem uninterested now, maybe that is because they have become used to hearing life go on without them? So, why have a dog?

Why was the dog ever taken in if it was going to be ignored? They have feelings too, and it is evident in their eyes. Remember, the eyes are the windows to the soul.

Think about what I am saying here. A lot of preachers would have a come-apart if they read that. Many people do not believe dogs have a spirit. Well, here is a shocker for that kind of unbeliever, look into a dog’s eyes and there is evidence of life in those eyes.

Let's discuss the possibility of no chain at all. First, we want to ensure the dog will

not run away and get injured or killed. So, do not try this unless certain the dog will come when called. If there is any doubt, use a leash and transfer the dog from chain to leash, and then bring it in. Now, we are in the house with your dog. He/she is so excited that it is full of energy, and your tranquil home is now the stomping ground of your dog. In some cases your dog will be so excited it will run around like it’s lost its mind. Not to fear, this is temporary. The dog should calm down in a minute or so.

Secondly, is your dog house-broken, as in will he/ she ask to go outside? If not, someone better keep it on a schedule until it learns the rules. Now, your dog may have one or two accidents before being consid-

ered house-trained and a lot will have to do with your dog wanting its scent in the house. It's a territorial thing.

Thirdly, dogs are social animals. They tend to desire to be part of the family. Remember the saying, "Man's best friend." When they see any of the family, they get so excited they are jumping toward anyone who will pay attention to them. They just want to be loved, and if they are given the chance, they will stop jumping and calm down. That chain just causes them to build up energy and desire.

My last thing I want to point out is that when your dog is chained outside, are you thinking about it at all when you're doing whatever you do in your daily life?

If you’re not thinking about your dog, then that dog needs a better home; and if you love your dog, then give it the home it desires, whether it is your home or another loving family's. If your desire is to get your dog accustomed to living in the house, and advice is needed, I am only a phone call away. Oh, and the excuse that they stink, won't wash in my eyes! Get that dog, and go wash it!

“Remember to love your dogs because they love you. Maybe not the way you want them to, like chewing up your favorite shoes or what not, but that is just love chewing. Be thankful for the time you have with them always.”

Walk Talk Therapy

sMy dogs, two big lab emixes, look forward to their daily walk. We have our route already mapped out, so while we ydon’t meander, I don’t have to focus my atten,tion on where we are goding. I can actually feel tmy brain becoming less distracted. My thoughts often go to problem disosection on both a small rand grand scale. These walks become my time lof self-reflection, creativity, and inspiration. ?It doesn’t take much of ta leap to recognize the therapeutic connection dbetween moving and talking. ,Walk Talk Therapy is rjust like it sounds…the fclient and therapist are routside walking during gthe therapy session in-

session of strolling to reduce stress versus an active fast-paced session of hiking to release feelings of anger or frustration.

While Walk Talk Therapy may not be for everyone, here are some tips to consider: 1. Keeping it confidential. Going for a walk means you may run into people who know you.

Make sure you address this up front and figure out a strategy beforehand. You may agree to just stop talking until the person is out of earshot.

Or you may just say ‘hi’ and keep moving on.

You may also want to discuss the route you will be taking…through a park, in a neighborhood, in the woods, etc.

ies. When the body is involved with the mind in therapy, issues may arise related to power or sexuality. Men may try to compete, while women may negatively compare their athletic abilities. A discussion beforehand could include a reminder that the session is still psychotherapy, and the change in medium will hopefully be beneficial.

3. Get creative. Being outdoors provides a wonderful opportunity to appreciate the natural world metaphorically, therapeutically, and symbolically. Here’s a great example: Take a few moments to wander off alone and find an object that represents an issue you are working on. A rock may sym-

bolize groundedness. A feather may signify the need to let go.

4. Attend to the conversation. Walking will alter the type of communication. Physically, you are next to each other, rather than more face to face, which can allow for more openness and disclosure, ability for insight, and even a potential “aha” moment. Conversely, going outside may promote avoidance. Walking for some may be distracting in a good way, and for others, prove to interfere with concentration.

5. More good news.

Just being outdoors allows you to enjoy the benefits of exposure to natural light and movement. Even moderately-

paced walking improves mood and reinforces the fact that we are not built to be sedentary. And, walking during therapy can encourage you to walk more frequently as you note the benefits physically and mentally.

Combining movement and therapy accomplishes at least one important goal: helping you to do two healthy things that you might otherwise put off doing. So get walking!

Asthma Should Not Keep You From Tying Your Shoes courtesy BrandPoint content (BPT) - "Prior to my asthma diagnosis as an adult, my health rapidly declined, I could not perform even the simplest of tasks - bending over to tie my own shoes would initiate an exacerbation," said Donna Matlach, mother of four, grandmother of 10, world traveler and ballroom dancer. People who have asthma that isn't controlled can experience symptoms, such as shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing.

For some people, like Donna, who have a more severe form of asthma, these symptoms may exist even when taking multiple medications, causing difficulty with

achieving the simplest of tasks and having asthma attacks that can be lifethreatening.

Donna's journey started with a chronic cough that led to a bronchitis diagnosis from her doctor, but despite numerous antibiotics and various medications and treatments, her symptoms showed no improvement. Her doctor then considered whether her childhood asthma had returned and the final diagnosis was that Donna's asthma had indeed returned but it was a more severe type of asthma.

Donna has worked with her doctor to develop a treatment plan to manage her severe asthma. "Fortunately, my asthma is

now controlled and I am my own person again," said Donna. "I can walk, I can dance, I can go out and enjoy myself, I can climb up the stairs. I can do the things I couldn't do previously. I can now go on vacation and enjoy simple things like laughing - that's me again."

If you are experiencing asthma symptoms, you are not alone. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 25 million people have asthma in the U.S. Up to 10 percent of these people have a more severe type of asthma. Like Donna, their asthma may be uncontrolled - even with multiple medications.

He Went In Peace - Part II

November 8, a beautiful fall day, Melia, her two children, flanked by Colonel Livingston, family members, several Marines and a large crowd gathered around the open grave at Athens Cemetery.

“Mommy, is Daddy gone?” asked Amanda, age 3, as Marines folded a flag over his coffin.

“Yes honey, he’s gone,” Melia replied.

A Marine Honor Guard fired 3 volleys, piercing the solitude of an otherwise beautiful and tranquil day. A bugler blew the mournful notes of Taps, then the crowd melted away.

Melia, like any good Marine, knew she must move forward.

“I didn’t have a first date until a year and half after his death,” she says. “And not a kiss until two years. Since I had no closure, I felt very guilty.”

Melia married Athens pharmacist, Tim Collier, on December 30, 1988. “He has loved me unconditionally. He knows I have a dead husband and a live husband. The kids have a dead dad and a live dad.”

They reside just off Menefee Road in East Limestone on a farm teeming with life - horses, goats, dogs, geese, chickens, mules, peacocks and grandchildren. An American flag flies in the front yard. Below it a Marine Corps flag flutters in the breeze. Semper Fi - always faithful.

A memorial monument erected near the entrance to Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, lists the names of the 214 Americans who died in the Marine barracks. On the opposite side is chiseled, “They came in peace.”

In Teheran, Iran, a memorial commemorates the “martyr” who murdered those Americans.
