My birth name is Alice, and as a kid I was often teased in a friendly manner by folks who called me “Alice in Wonderland,” a literary reference to the book written by Lewis Carroll about a little girl who finds herself in over her head and completely out of her element through no fault of her own. Though “Alice” was written as a satire against the British government, it went on to become a fairy tale whose most famous phrase was “Curiouser and curiouser.” The butchered use of English was described as being the result of Alice being so thrown by what she was seeing and hearing in Wonderland that she could no longer speak her native language well.

I think I am beginning to understand the plight of my namesake. The craziness of this Presidential election season makes me wonder at times if our culture has become one giant, corporate Mad Hatter, and if we have permanently fallen down a rabbit hole. Even when I went to vote yesterday the people at the polls were saying that this was the strangest election they had ever seen. People are literally shaking their heads at the Trump phenomenon, and while

everyone from pundits to preachers are trying to figure out what is going on, and are virtually stammering while doing so, I wonder if we are being shaken by God down to the foundations of our American Experiment.

We have an avowed atheist and socialist as a contender for the Presidency by the name of Bernie Sanders.

I remember when he first announced his candidacy, I didn’t think he would last for two weeks against Hillary Clinton. Mrs. Clinton, who at the very least should be in jail and making license plates for a

long, long time, is actually lecturing us about being more loving. I am reminded of tales told by the Secret Service about ash trays being thrown by her at her husband, President Bill Clinton, while she was First Lady, and I

wonder how she defines “loving.” On the other hand, one might think that Bill was getting off easy.

Then, we have an ubercrowded field of candidates for the Republican ticket, most of whom don’t seem to be actually running any longer, but who were all listed on the ballot. And for the first time in my life, the ballot

was dominated by those running as delegates, who technically are in a position to pick the presidential candidates themselves. There is talk that if Trump actually wins the popular vote in the Primaries, the delegates may keep him from getting the nomination, and Mitt Romney, who, as far as anyone knows is not running, may be the one who is picked to go up against Mrs. Clinton.

Or, said another way, the guy that reflects the anger of the people and has no problem expressing it, may technically win the Republican nomination, but not be able to ultimately run against the former First Lady who is somewhat legendary for her anger. Then, again, the evangelical could go up against the atheist.

Any way you look at it, we need to go on our faces and do some serious repenting that this is the state of our constitutional republic. As Alice said, “Curiouser and curiouser,” and that will only increase in the days ahead.

ISIS-Catch And Release, As Well As Celebrating Victories

Late in February, an ISIS operative was captured in Iraq by U.S. Special Operations forces. For reasons I do not understand, U.S. Central Command said the unidentified militant will only be held for a brief time. Col. Pat Ryder, who is Centcom’s spokesman, would not elaborate on any details, and that is something I respect. I am also glad to hear that the Spec Force guys have been successful in their mission since 200 of them headed over to the Great Sandbox in December. However, the question that comes to my mind is, if the operative who was described by the New York Times as a “significant” member of ISIS, why will

he only be detained for what Ryder describes as “a short time?”

Secretary of Defense Ash Carter announced in December of 2015 that the large team, which is comprised of an intel cell, aviation support, and an assault force were going to be based in Irbil, which is located in Northern Iraq.

In October of 2015, there was a rescue of several dozen prisoners, most of whom were Kurdish, who were being held by ISIS in northern Iraq. It did come with a price, and that was the death of Army Master Sgt Joshua Wheeler, who was a Delta Force Commando.

May God rest his soul and comfort his family.

I do know this from having been amongst Kurds while in Iraq: you’ll rarely find a more grateful people, and I am sure his name will become an honored part of their history.

Backing up a bit further in time to May of 2015, in eastern Syria there was a Delta Force raid that resulted in the death of an ISIS commander by

the name of Abu Sayyaf.

His wife was detained, and has been charged by the Justice Department of the Kurdistan Regional government with conspiring to kill Kayla Mueller. Ms. Mueller, who was 26 when she died, was an American aid worker and was kidnapped by ISIS. She was held by the Sayyafs as a sex slave, and was repeatedly raped by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the fellow who describes himself as the emir of ISIS. I am glad for Kayla’s sake that at least one of her tormentors has been captured, and may justice on her behalf be served well.

Our commandos are on what is known as a “kill or capture mission,” and here are two examples of them doing just that.

May we not forget that they are still fighting for our freedom, and paying for it with their blood.

by Ali Elizabeth Turner Over 125 years ago, the Lovvorn family came to our area, and continued to settle the state whose motto is “Alabama the Beautiful.” For the past two years, Garth Lovvorn has made it his full time occupation to make that motto a reality in North Alabama by providing lawn and garden care, along with home inspection and property maintenance services.

Garth is a graduate of Athens State University, and has worked in a number of corporate contexts which include banking, construction and property development, and insurance. He also has worked for Habitat for Humanity.

However, he has always loved to beautify the outdoors, and for years did so on the side. He decided to go full time as a sole proprietor in 2014, hanging out his shingle as Valley Mowing Company.

The Senate Joint Resolution 6 (SJR6) was introduced by Alabama State Senator Arthur Orr and

Alabama House Speaker Pro Tem Victor Gaston and was signed by Governor Robert Bentley on February 16, 2016. The passage of the strongly worded Joint Resolution also reaffirms Alabama's support of the State of Israel as a Jewish State and recognizes that the Jewish people are indigenous to the land of Israel.

The catalyst for this effort was a result of PJTN's grassroots/media campaign in conjunction with Jewish and Christian leaders mobilizing together across the state, including the Birmingham Jewish Federation, The AlabamaIsrael Task Force and Church4Israel.

According to Robin Rowan, Founder of Church4Israel, one of the organizations spearheading this effort in Alabama, "The purpose is to recognize the resurgence of global anti-Semitism currently being at its highest point since World War II and condemns the anti-Israel

Alabama has a unique history with regards to the State of Israel. In 1942, Alabama passed a resolution calling for the establishment of the Jewish State and homeland five years before the Nation State was established. That's a miracle! No other state shares that unique history."

BDS is an international anti-Israel, anti-Zionist propaganda campaign and by extension, an anti-Semitic and anti-Jewish campaign.

The BDS movement calls for: •Boycotting Israeli products, academics, and cultural leaders.

•Pressuring companies to stop doing business with Israel and divesting from companies that do business with Israel.

•Sanctioning Israel for its legitimate self-defense

The BDS movement promotes the delegitimization of Israel with the stated goal... to eliminate the State of Israel, utterly and completely.

The time has come for elected state leaders to step forward and condemn the hate speech and targeting of pro-Israel and Jewish students on college campuses that has been fueled by the BDS campaign.

The incidents of anti-Semitic attacks in general, and against Jewish students on college campuses specifically, have seen a dramatic increase over the last several years.

In closing, Ms. CardozaMoore stated, "The recent passage of the Alabama resolution can serve as a positive example and concrete model of a firm step that other state legislators can take as we begin to expose the malicious intent of the BDS campaign and confront it head-on! Getting Athens Ready To Be A Part Of The Americana Music Triangle

by Teresa Todd, President, Athens-Limestone County Tourism Association Residents of AthensLimestone have good reason to be proud of their rich heritage when it comes to music. We are still celebrating the fact that our very own Alabama Shakes won three Grammys this year, legendary songwriter Roger Murrah has loaned us the piano that started his career, and Limestone County natives such as the Delmore Brothers, Jabe Hess, and Ernie Ashworth are all honored in the Alabama Music Hall of Fame.

Recently tourism officials from Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Arkansas attended a meeting at the Alabama Music Hall of Fame to discuss their strategies for attracting more visitors to what has become known as the Americana Music Triangle. The “Triangle” is a term for the cities in the South which have become famous for their role in shaping American music such as jazz, country, rock and soul. The points

of the Triangle include Nashville, Memphis, and New Orleans. The Americana Music Triangle was founded by Aubrey Preston, a Leiper’s Fork, TN, businessman, for the purpose of building music tourism in the South. At the meeting, Mr. Preston said, “Pass the ball,” meaning when it comes to increasing music-related tourism, “Work with your team mates so you can score and get ahead.” Other officials at the meeting said, “The cooperative efforts of local and state tourism agencies, along with the music industry and the help of the Americana Music Triangle are paying off.”

Aubrey developed a website called www.americanamusictriangle.com and launched it about a year ago, using all media platforms to do so.

Its tag line is, “Where history made music, then music made history.” It has been highly successful. The site functions as a web-based guide to the cities in the triangle, and there is no cost to use the

site.

Debbie Wilson, of the Alabama Tourism Office, said Americana Music Triangle maps have been placed in the 8 Welcome Centers across Alabama.

The Athens-Limestone County Tourism Office will have the maps in their visitor’s center in the next couple of weeks.

Alabama and Tennessee tourism associations have been especially engaged in promoting music tourism for the past two years. The Muscle

Shoals and Nashville musical connection is especially strong, and Franklin and Florence have become connected as well. I would like to see Athens participate in this partnership as well.

There is no cost to tourism to be a part of the Triangle. It has no paid staff and exists as a virtual map and guide that can be used by tourists everywhere. If Athens can start its own AthensLimestone Music Museum soon, we can tap into and post upcoming events and news.

The Colbert County Convention and Visitors Bureau has actively marketed the Shoals to Europeans interested in the music heritage of the area. The Americana Music Triangle, along with the Muscle Shoals feature length documentary

have been really good for raising our level of music tourism activity.

The documentary was released in 2013.

Preston said the launch of the site generated 6 million media impressions, which was coupled with a weeklong bus tour around the Triangle. He encouraged tourism officials to work with each other and coordinate trips to other events when possible.

Since tourists coming to our area often aren’t completely aware of state and county lines while traveling, they will go outside the Triangle borders to visit the location of the birthplace or home of their favorite musician or music genre. If we can make a way for there to be a music museum here, they will come.

We can all win by showing support for the great talent we are so blessed to have as a part of our community.

Several of our KALB Commission members had a brainstorming session recently to try to find ways to fix our budget deficit due to losing some important funding dollars. Leigh, our office manager, took two months off without pay to help bridge the gap, but there is still a ways to go.

Brainstorming is always fun, and we had some really creative thinkers in the group.

We decided to consider our financial difficulties as an opportunity rather than a problem.

With that in mind, KALB is focusing on attracting new members to our organization, and taking advantage of the love people have for their dogs!

Leftover Meatball Pizza

by Tammy Wilkinson, owner of Arabella's Cakes and Catering My mom and grandmother raised me to not waste food, and sometimes it’s challenging to figure out how to do something new with leftovers. I had some meatballs in my fridge, and decided to be inventive. I loved the result, and hope you do, too! You can let me know how yours turned out by emailing me at nolatw81@gmail. com.

Ingredients:

2 Stonefire Naan flatbreads (found in bakery section) (Bob’s Red Mill GlutenFree Pizza Mix works well, too, if you are watching your gluten intake) 8-10 Meatballs with sauce, chopped up 4oz can sliced mushrooms, drained and rinsed 3oz can sliced black olives, drained and rinsed ¼ teaspoon Italian seasoning ¼ cup each Colby & Monterey Jack cheese, grated ¼ cup Mozzarella cheese, grated (Total of ½ cup cheese) 3 tri-color baby bell peppers, sliced Grated Parmesan Cheese (optional) Red Pepper Flakes (optional)

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

In a large skillet, sauté mushrooms, black olives, Italian seasoning, meatballs and sauce for 3-5 minutes.

Cool and spoon over Naan flatbread.

Add tri-color bell peppers.

Top with Mozzarella and Colby & Monterey Jack cheeses.

Bake 15-20 minutes Sprinkle with Parmesan Cheese and/or Red Pepper Flakes.

Risk Of Falling As We Age

Each year, millions of people over 65 years old fall.

In fact, one out of three fall each year, and once a person falls their chances of falling again doubles.

Not all falls cause injuries, but one out of five does.

Falls can cause broken bones, such as wrist, arm, ankle, and hip fractures.

Falls also may cause head injuries, which can be very serious, especially if the person is taking medicines like blood thinners. An older person who falls and hits his/her head should see their doctor right away to make sure they don’t have a brain injury. Many people who fall, even if they’re not injured, become afraid of falling. This fear may cause a person to cut down on their everyday activities or begin shuffling. When a person is less active, they become weaker, which also increases their chances of

falling.

Research has identified many risk factors that contribute to falling. Many risk factors can be changed or modified to help prevent falls. They include: •Lower body weakness •Vitamin D deficiency •Difficulties with walking and balance •Medications such as tranquilizers, sedatives, or antidepressants; even some over-the-counter medicines can affect vision •Foot pain or poor footwear •Home hazards or dangers such as broken or uneven steps, throw rugs or clutter that can be tripped over, and lack of handrails along stairs or in the bathroom Most falls are caused by a combination of risk factors, and the more risk factors a person has, the greater their chances of falling.

Falls can be prevented, or at least greatly reduced. There are some simple things you can do to protect yourself.

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist to review all your medicines (including those that are sold over the counter). If you are not taking a vitamin D supplement with calcium, ask your physician about this. Do exercises that make your legs stronger and improve your balance two or three days a week, and flexibility exercises every day. Wear safe shoes; never wear slip on shoes or heels.

Instead, wear those that tie or Velcro so they can be tightened as they begin to stretch out. Get your eyes checked by an eye doctor at least once a year, and be sure to update your eyeglasses as needed. If you have bifocal or progressive lenses, you may want to get a pair of glasses with only your distance prescription for outdoor activities, such

as walking. Sometimes bifocals or progressive lenses can make things seem closer or farther away than they really are, which can increase the risk of falling.

Make your home safer by

getting rid of things you could trip over, adding grab bars inside and outside your tub or shower and next to the toilet, installing railings on both sides of stairs, and making sure your home has lots of light by adding more or brighter light bulbs.

Drucilla’s Restaurant: All Set For Spring

It was built in 1901, and was the Manse (or parsonage) of the Presbyterian Church.

The restaurant is named in honor of owner Carol Holland’s grandmother, who was a highly respected elementary school teacher. Olna Drucilla Bullington taught at several schools throughout Limestone County, including Piney Chapel and Ardmore, and she was also a great cook. Mrs. Bullington taught Carol both to love cooking, and to do it well. Carol is a native of Athens, graduated from Athens High, and got her engineering degree from UAH. She spent her career working for Department of Defense contractors as a Systems Engineer.

In the summer of 2014, Carol decided to pursue a lifelong dream of owning her very own restaurant. She had always loved the house, and gladly purchased it when it became available. It is an elegant, well preserved building, complete with leaded glass windows, fireplaces, antiques, and high ceilings.

It now sports an outside eating area (front lawn and back patio), park benches, flowers, and an herb and vegetable garden, also named in honor of Drucilla.

Carol loves the idea of “eclectic” in both the décor and the menu. Some of her menu choices came from places she had visited on vacation, some from family recipes, some are from England, and some are just classic Southern. She uses the term “Southern eclectic” to describe it all.

Recently the menu has undergone several changes, and Carol has tried to price the items so two people can have a very nice lunch for around $20. “We are moving in the direction of what you would call a tea room,” said Carol. “We have added specialties such as Poulet de Normandie. It’s served

with congealed cranberry salad and a yeast roll. We also have a Quiche of the Week, which is served with a small spinach salad and a bran muffin,” she told me. Then she chuckled as she said, “We don’t want to scare off the men, though. We still have hearty sandwiches, spaghetti, and baked ham every day.”

fers at least 16 different salads such as traditional chicken, the chicken Waldorf (apples, grapes, pecans), broccoli, Hawaiian, corn, cucumber, etc. in mix and match combinations. For those with a gluten-free requirement, Drucilla’s wants everyone to know that all of their salads are gluten-free, except for the macaroni salad and the pasta salad.

Homemade desserts are always available. Favorites include strawberry cake, coconut cake, old-fashioned Butter Roll, Mississippi mud cake, peanut butter pie, caramel pie and strawberry pretzel salad. Strawberry pretzel

salad, peanut butter pie, and caramel pie are offered daily. As much as possible, Carol purchases produce and supplies locally in order to support our county economy.

Carol’s husband Justin has worked diligently to put in a beautiful garden in the back yard, and the fruits of his labor were abundant last year. In season, tomatoes, squash, lettuce, onions, eggplant, and cabbages, all make their way into Drucilla’s daily menu. The herb garden has basil, lavender, rosemary, thyme, spearmint and peppermint, sage, chives and oregano.

The garden itself is a feast for the eyes, and Carol said, “We are looking forward to serving herbs and vegetables right out of Drucilla’s garden.”

Drucilla’s was asked to cater the recent “State of the County” luncheon, hosted at the Limestone County Event Center. “The catering service of Drucilla’s is something we want people to be aware of,” she said. It is a wonderful place for wedding receptions, bridal and baby showers, church dinners, reunions, and other special gatherings. They are also available in the evenings for private dinners.

Dr. Charles Gaputis Of Rogersville Family Care: “Walking The Line Since ‘89”

Born and raised in Boston, he went to a high school that is even older than Harvard, and got his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Bates College, the second oldest co-ed school in the U.S. “I always wanted to be a doctor, though,” Dr. G (as he is called by his staff and patients) told me. “I was especially motivated toward the field of medicine after my father died of cancer, and that was when I was introduced to osteopathy. I got my D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathy) degree from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Bio Sciences,” he said. Dr. G served in the USAF, and left the service with the rank of Major.

Some of you may be wondering, “What is an osteopath, and how are they different from a regular medical doctor?” Dr. G gave me a bit of an education regarding that particular brand of medicine.

“It was founded in 1870 by a doc named Andrew Still,” he said, and mentioned further that “What put us on the map was the Viet Nam War. Up until then, we pretty much had to practice in our own hospitals, and now we can practice anywhere.” While Osteopaths receive the same training as family practice physicians and can perform surgeries, prescribe medications, and anything else a general physician would do,

many also do manipulations similar to those performed by a chiropractor. Dr. Gaputis, however, chooses not to, and by his own description is “a traditionalist.”

After his military service, (and delivering over 250 babies), he and his family settled in North Alabama, and practiced at ECM Hospital.

In 1990, he opened his first practice, (which later became known as Rogersville Family Care,) and moved to its present location at 16053 US Hwy 72. Dr. G has been there ever since. There are several things which are “family” about the practice, one being that they close from 12-1:30 and all sit around a round table in the clinic’s kitchen and have lunch together. That’s certainly not something you’ll find in a big city clinic. Another is that there is a high level of camaraderie, and the staff members seem to enjoy each other, as well as the patients.

Dr. G mentioned that in some cases he is treating the third generation of his original pa-

tients from when he opened his practice, but typically now he starts seeing children that are at least two years old. He also noted that in the past 25+ years, his treatment focus has gone from acute (something like an injury or chicken pox, which heals and then the person goes back to normal) to chronic, which is something that continually afflicts, such as diabetes, heart disease, or asthma. These days, most of his acute care focus comes in the form of looking after the local high school football teams, and he handles their pre-season exams. “I go to all their games, and that’s why I say I have ‘been walkin’ the line since ’89,’” he said with a smile.

Recently, Rogersville Family Care has become part of the Athens-Limestone Hospital system, and Dr. G. is most pleased with the new relationship and affiliation. He is able to give his employees better benefits, and says that the new system is kind of like a hybrid.

It’s still the same small town feel, “but with better patient support, accessibility to the Athens-Limestone Hospital system, and an upgraded record keeping system.”

I asked him why I should come to Rogersville Family Care if I were in the market

for a doctor. “We work hard for our patients,” he said. By that he meant that he makes sure that “patients get the same treatment, whether or not they have great insurance or none at all.” Upon occasion, in very special cases, they will do home visits, and will work with patients’ assistance to help facilitate payment of their medical bills. He also added, “I listen to my patients, and look them in the eye.” If that is the type of doctor you are looking for, then Dr. Charles Gaputis and his staff are waiting to take care of you.

Practicing effective business etiquette builds a foundation for satisfaction.

Good salesmanship is empathetic. Empathy means you can identify the feelings, thoughts and attitudes of others.

If I am watching television or reading a book, and really getting into it, the character throws a punch and I stand up and throw a punch too, that’s empathy. This is not to be confused with sympathy. Sympathy is agreeing with the feelings of others. When someone gets hurt and we feel sorry about it, that is sympathy.

In business, rapport is essential. It starts with body language – a smile, a friendly wave, a sincere handshake, a kind word. During the day we “entertain” many guests – the mailman, customers, co-workers, vendors.

What Makes Ronnie Roll

Because A Little Bug Went Ka-choo

by Ali Elizabeth Turner Mayor Ronnie wears many hats, and sometimes that means literally. Every year, he dons his borrowed Dr. Seuss hat and spends time reading to various pre-school and elementary classrooms throughout Athens during Dr. Seuss Week.

We talked about our favorites from the Seuss collection, including Horton Hears A Who, and Bartholomew And The Oobleck. However, this year, he chose a title of which I had never heard, and it was, Because A Little Bug Went Ka-choo! It was written in 1975, when Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel), was 71, and for this book he used the pen name Rosetta Stone.

The story is about chain reactions and the law of unintended consequences. It is also a great cautionary tale about what happens when you don’t manage your emotions, as illustrated by a worm who gets mad about getting bonked on the head and goes and kicks a tree. No Mayor likes to be stumped by questions, and Mayor Ronnie found himself almost coming up short when one of the kids asked, “How did the worm kick the tree? He doesn’t have any feet.” His reply?

“He was a very special worm.” Later, he asked the kids, “What does the Mayor do? What’s his job?” Their answer? “He reads to kids.” Would that his job was so simple! We both laughed as he told me of the morn-

Lady Justice: Blind as a Bat and Totally Confused

by Jerry Barksdale Lady Justice is portrayed blindfolded as she holds the scales to weigh guilt and innocence. Sometimes, she gets confused.

I am reminded of a case that my former classmate and law partner, Henry Blizzard and I tried back in 1970 in Huntsville. It was one of our first trials. At the time, neither of us had much courtroom experience. We closed home loans, wrote wills and deeds, collected small accounts, handled misdemeanors, and waited for the big case that would make us rich and famous.

Several of my clients got to eat jailhouse cornbread and boiled cabbage as a result of my trial inexperience. I do apologize to them. However, they can take solace in knowing they contributed to my on-the-job training. Earning a living was tough for a young, upstart lawyer.

Henry worked two days a week assisting District Attorney, Dan Nelson. The dab of money he earned helped pay our overhead. In addition, he went to court with the D.A. and watched him prosecute criminal cases.

Jasper Powell, a Decatur lawyer with a voice like Moses reading the Ten Commandments, handled a lot of criminal cases and won more than his share.

According to Henry, he would get the witnesses so confused about the facts, the jury wouldn't convict.

other witnesses were located. Pretty soon everyone was confused about who saw what and when. He was good at his craft.

Meanwhile Delbert (not his real name), a young man from a northern state, had recently moved to Huntsville and was under-

standably unfamiliar with the delicate sensibilities of Southern girls. While attending a party one night, he "allegedly" groped a young lady's privates before she was ready to be groped. His timing was way off. Instead of doing the Christian thing and “turning the other cheek" she took offense, and had Delbert arrested on a felony charge that could get him 1 to 10 in the slammer.

Delbert needed a lawyer.

Being a stranger in our land, Delbert didn't know any lawyers, but he did know a woman who knew

my sister-in-law who knew that Henry and I needed clients and fees. Delbert hired us to save him. Neither of us had ever handled a case of this magnitude before.

Delbert was nervous as a squirrel, and called our office regularly. "What's going on?" He was eventually

indicted by the Madison County Grand Jury. Soon trial date would be set.

I was as nervous as Delbert. I checked our post office box sometimes twice a day, even on Sundays, dreading the day when we received a notice of trial.

One Sunday following worship, I stopped at the post office, opened the box, and there was an order setting Delbert's case for trial.

I almost upchucked. How would we keep Delbert out of prison? We didn’t have a defense. He admitted touching the young lady – but not much. Henry rubbed his bald head, as he

was often apt to do when thinking hard, and puffed his pipe.

"We'll do what Jasper Powell does in Decatur," he finally said. "We'll get everyone so confused they won't know what's happening."

Yay! Not only would we keep Delbert out of prison and on the street so that he could grope more young women, but we'd become locally famous. I began to have doubts as the trial approached. Would our strategy work? Or would Delbert be eating jailhouse cornbread and boiled cabbage?

The trial got underway and opening statements were made. The party had taken place at a private home at night where young people were packed inside, drinking, laughing, and talking. The D.A. called the victim, a young lady, who with great drama told what Delbert had done to her.

"He touched my privates," she barely whispered and dropped her head. Delbert squirmed in his chair, already smelling cornbread and boiled cabbage. We gently cross examined her and established that dozens of people were drinking, talking, laughing, and milling about. In other words, your typical bunch of young drunks trying to hook up.

Prosecution called other witnesses to corroborate the victim's story. On cross examination, we asked detailed questions: "Where were you standing? How far away? Where were the other witnesses? Where

were the lights? Were you drinking?” Each witness had a somewhat different answer. Alcohol had clouded their minds and memories. Henry and I could smell victory. The jury would put Delbert back on the streets, and we would have our fifteen minutes of fame. After lunch we returned to the courtroom and the D.A. walked over. “Would you fellows object if I dismiss this case?” he asked. “I'm so confused I don't know what happened."

"Dismiss!" Henry and I were nearly outraged. Delbert was happy, but Henry and I felt cheated. Our fifteen minutes of fame had been stolen from us.

Henry went on to serve many years as Circuit Judge of Limestone County. I just went on losing my hair. As for Delbert, the experience was so traumatic, I suspect he swore an oath of celibacy and entered a monastery.

You may think that justice was denied. No, the Government has the duty of proving its case against a citizen beyond a reasonable doubt. We cast doubt on their case. Justice thwarted isn't the moral of this story. It's a warning to young men with hormone overdrive. Be careful of who you grope and when.

Proper timing is everything in life. If your timing is off, you could end up eating jailhouse cornbread and boiled cabbage.

Or, on the other hand you could catch a wife; perhaps the wrong one.

Choking On Cornbread, Strangling On Shrimp, And Marching For Midwives

by Rachel Clark, RN, BSN Imagine you (or a woman that you deeply care about) have recently moved to Alabama and discovered that you are pregnant. You’ve already decided that you want an experience that involves a care provider who promotes low interventions, a healthy pregnancy, and continuity of care throughout the entire process. Your last birth was at home with a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM), and you want to go that route again. You begin to do your research, only to find that CPMs are illegal in Alabama. Your only option is to go over the state line to Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, or Florida. So you begin to look for birth centers, only to find there aren’t any of those in Alabama either. Then you expand your research options, looking a Certified Nurse Midwife in the hospital setting. You find that there are only 3 fullscope midwifery practices in the state, and none of them are close to you. What do you do? Drive across the state line to birth with a CPM, or drive hours to Anniston, Montgomery, or Mobile to one of the full-scope CNMs?

The hope is to also repeal a law passed in 1975 that makes the practice of midwifery by a Certified Professional Midwife illegal and a class C misdemeanor.

Why is this so important, you ask? And what does it have to do with cornbread and shrimp? In 2014, a bill passed the Alabama House of Representatives to make cornbread the state bread. In 2015, legislation making the brown shrimp the “State Crustacean” of Alabama passed. And yet, issues like the decriminalization of Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) were ignored. This year, legislators will have a midwifery bill on their desks again. Consumers like Hannah Ellis (who came up with the terms “choking on cornbread” and “strangled by shrimp”)

have begged legislators to consider this bill, and stop wasting time and money voting on frivolous bills like the two mentioned above, and instead focus on bills that really make a difference to people in our state.

The word “midwife” means “with woman,” and there are different types of midwives. Currently, Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs) are legal in all 50 states of the U.S., but in Alabama, there are only 3 state-wide who have the opportunity to practice to the full extent of their training, meaning that they can deliver babies in the hospital setting, as well as practice primary care for women. Among them is a new graduate from Frontier Nursing University, Sara Hellwege, who works with Dr. Joshua Johannson in Anniston, AL. The other two are located in Montgomery and Mobile.

Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) are legal in 28 states, and are educated via accredited midwifery programs or an educational pathway that meets national certification standards. They are trained specifically in what is called “out of hospital birth,” and provide care specifically during the childbearing cycle. They must pass the certifying examination through the North American Registry of Midwives.

So, why seek out a midwife?

Midwives can

bridge a gap that currently exists. There are approximately 2.2 million women in our state, and only 470 OBGYNs. Of the 67 counties in Alabama, 37 don’t have obstetrical services in their local hospitals. For lowrisk mothers, midwives are an option to improve the outcomes of birth in this state. Currently, we receive an “F” rating by the March of Dimes on prematurity. We are in the top 4 for infant mortality in the country, which only 3 other states have worse records than we do. Despite the fact that the March of Dimes recommends breastfeeding for the first year, only 60% of infants in Alabama are ever breastfed, and only 14% continue to be by 12 months of age. Midwives are able to spend more time with clients, educating them about lifestyle, breastfeeding and nutrition, health screenings, and other issues pertaining to women and babies.

Please contact your senators and representatives, and tell them you want midwives to be able to practice in this state again. Consider joining organizations such as ABC and Safer Birth in ‘Bama.

Also get involved with events like “Miles for Midwives,” a walk in various towns across the state which demonstrates solidarity with the midwifery profession, educates communities, and raises money for grassroots campaigns.

Watch Out For Who’s Watching You

Predators size up their prey before attacking.

This is true for alligators, wolves, sharks, and it is also true for violently predatory humans. Be aware of your surroundings and who is watching your movements. It is much better to stay out of trouble in the first place than to shoot your way out of a life or death situation.

You need to be totally aware of who and what is around you. This applies whether you are pulling into a parking lot, walking into a store, or eating lunch at your favorite burger joint.

In cop circles, we have what we call the “Gun Fighter’s Chair.” This was made famous by the gambler and gun fighter, known as Wild Bill Hickok, who met his demise sitting at a poker table with his back to the door. The killer approached from behind and shot Wild Bill in the back of his head.

The former Sheriff of Abilene, Texas turned gambler and vagrant, was buried in Deadwood South Dakota. His twin six shooters were sold to pay for the burial plot.

In his earlier days, Wild Bill would have always sat so he could see who was approaching him.

Now, I am not advising my readers to live like Wild Bill. But please do be aware of your surroundings. Walking with your nose in your smart phone could lead to more serious problems than walking into a light pole,
