Blackbird Ed And The Apple Pie On Wednesday, June 5 I had the privilege of being in the same room with a true Alabama Aviation Hall of Famer, Lt. Col. Ed Yeilding.

He was the keynote speaker at the Learjetjohn Aviation Camp held at Pryor Field and Calhoun Community College. Ed is most famous for being an SR-71 Blackbird pilot, a dream that was born in his heart in 1964, when LBJ announced the plane’s existence. At the time, Ed was 15, and he told himself he would one day fly that plane, and he did. It was the Cold War, and the Blackbird’s purpose was to spy on the Soviet Union and other potential “hot spots.” It had a remarkable ability to take pictures, and literally kept us safe without firing a shot.

Ed first flew while a student at Auburn, and he was hooked. He graduated with a degree in electrical engineering and became an officer in the United States Air Force.

The Blackbird, which is still quite futuristic in its appearance, was designed by a man named Kelly Johnson, who also designed the U-2 plane of Bridge of Spies fame, a film that Ed says he greatly enjoyed. Lockheed built the SR-71, which, as Ed describes, flew to “the edge of space at three times the speed of sound.” Literally, the Blackbird was “faster than a speeding bullet.”

which are to be expected with a plane like this. In spite of the fact that at 80,000 feet in the air the temperature is a cool -70 degrees F., they had to make the skin out of titanium because of how hot the plane became from the friction of flying so fast. D-Day, A Decision To Defy The Demonic

June 6th marks the 75th anniversary of one of the most miraculous military campaigns in human history, and its historical import was of biblical proportions. On that day in 1944, Allied forces under the command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower stormed the beaches and turned the tide of World War II. It was the largest seaborne invasion ever, and has been the topic of numerous books and films, including The Longest Day and Saving Private Ryan. To his troops, Ike said simply, “The eyes of the world are upon you.

The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you."

The Normandy beach was divided into five

sections, entitled Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. To this day, if you ever hear of anyone being referred to as having been “on the beach,” it means they were a part of the invasion. Those brave ones are dwindling

in numbers daily.

Recently, a fellow BNI member, Amy Fiscus, related to me that when she went to Normandy, tears started to pour down her cheeks, and she wasn’t even aware that she had begun to cry until much

later. I have heard of vets making pilgrimages to commemorate the sacrifice of their forebears and being utterly overwhelmed by the gravity of what occurred there.

This was and still is the Greatest Generation, and what they did all over the globe to stop one of the worst combined acts of satanic terrorism ever, will not be matched any time soon.

So, let’s talk about the “decision to defy the demonic.” Is that just a bunch of “Ds” slung together in order to make an alliterative title, or is that what they were up against?

Well, if you believe the research of historian Eric Kurlander, author of Hitler’s Monsters, the questions he raises below make perfect sense and will give you the answer as to why thousands of men from several nations poured onto the beach 75 years ago:

Given these political antecedents, should we be surprised that among Hitler’s inner circle were men who practiced astrology, wanted to resuscitate pagan gods, or considered themselves magicians? That Hitler himself, in contemplating how best to manipulate the masses, apparently read a parapsychological tome called Magic in which he underlined sentences such as ‘Satan is the fertilising, destroying-constructing warrior’ and ‘He who does not carry demonic seeds within him will never give birth to a new world’?

Is it a coincidence that Joseph Goebbels hired Weimar’s most prolific horror writer, Hanns Heinz Ewers, to fulfil important propaganda tasks for the Nazi Party? Or that leading Nazi stormtroopers allied with the popular clairvoyant, Erik Hanussen, who, at a séance on the night of February 26, 1933 ‘predicted’ the infamous Reichstag Fire, which justified the Nazi imposition of martial law?

Seems pretty straightforward to me. At the end of the day, WWII in general and D-day in specific were the epic battles of good against evil of our time, and because of men who at the time were barely past being boys, we are still free.

The question is, will we continue living out their legacy?

Getting Down To The Nitty-Gritty

(This article is dedicated to First Presbyterian Church of Athens) I’ll begin by saying what a blessing it is to be a native Athenian…even though I did not always think so! As a teen, I could hardly wait to get away from the nosy folks who were always up in my business. That mindset took me far enough away from small-town life to discover that those nosy people really cared about me and were only trying to keep me from a life of hardship and suffering! When I returned home in 2013, I was a broken and humiliated woman who feared what coming back here meant for me on many levels. Yet, so many in my hometown stepped up to assist, mentor, and welcome me back in such a way that I could begin to restore my lost dignity. The list of people, churches, and orga-

nizations who were integral in that process are endless. It would be impossible to describe how God used them to put the shattered pieces of my life together so that I could be better, stronger, and useful to others. Today is my feeble attempt to focus on one specifically: First Presbyterian Church on the Square.

The church was founded in 1829 but has been meeting at 112 S Jefferson Street since 1895…that’s 124 years! As impressive as that sounds, I know that their REAL address is actually 123 Anywhere World-Wide because they live out the scripture -- We are the Church -- so literally. They aren’t just mission-minded; they are mission-hearted!

They go out of their way to not simply support and help missions but also to provide

spiritual nutrition to the missionaries as well as to those being served. They clearly display that it matters to them if folks are living for Christ and building His Kingdom and that they care about souls dying and going to Hell. They not only give their money, they give their time and resources. Things they can’t see mean a great deal more to them than things they can see. They trust God with their money…even though it means they may never know whether or not it was worth the giving. They know their rewards will be lavish at the judgment. Their lives display the slogan, “If you’re going to give to Missions, give it your all. Give it your heart!”

This past April, I celebrated 5 years of employment at ALC-Family Resource Center (FRC). I have spent time reflecting on the progress of both me and the center. I have become a reliable, mature woman and the center has become a valuable, established, community organization.

Neither of those things occurred without a host of prayers, belief, people, and financial assistance -- not to mention, lots of time, sweat, frustration, and tears on my end! Many, many of God’s saints surrounded both me and FRC…including us when we might have been outcasted. Within a few months of my employment, First Presbyterian Church asked me to speak to them about the vision God had planted in my heart. Afterwards, they asked me if I wanted to become a Presbyterian Woman. When I declined due to already being a church

member somewhere else, they dubbed me an ‘honorary Presbyterian Woman’ instead.

Though it was done with fun affection, it still touched me to the depths of my soul! I was being invited to become part of…not excluded or set apart.

I felt a sense of belonging that I desperately needed in those early days of recovery; so I gladly accepted their invitation! Later that same day, Interim Minister Dr. Michael Bush and a group of First Presbyterian ladies presented me with many new underwear items for FRC’s male and female clients. Hence, our ongoing community Undie Sunday Project was born, which many individuals, groups, and businesses have helped support over the past years. Dr. Bush was also integral in the church project that gave us The Revival Building which many of us Athenians have utilized and enjoyed since its doors opened a couple years ago. Dr. Bush passed away weeks after leaving our community. I like to think he did his final work for God while at OUR church on the Square.

Throughout the year, folks from the church will drop by the center to ask what they can do to help us. We visit for a while and make a plan because there is always work to be done! Often, a check is already in their pocket to hand to me as we say good-bye.

They are constantly bringing us bags of clothing and other miscellaneous items to put in our Shepherd’s Closet donation area for clients and dropping off sweet goodies for staff and volunteers to enjoy. They allow us the use of church space that requires money to maintain, yet refuse to accept payment to offset

costs. They see the longterm benefit of what we are offering the community as payment in full.

Every year around the holidays, the church elves really get busy serving local missions. The Potter’s Hand group makes unique, affordable pottery to sell around the area and beyond. The proceeds are given to local non-profits; FRC is blessed to be included.

Church members provide gift cards and money to ensure our families have a meal through our Thanksgiving Basket Program; they rally to put together items for our Teen Christmas Program and gather gifts to bless several of our families who need it the most. Then, they end the year by taking up a collection to help the center acquire operational needs so we can be more effective in serving clients, things like updated computers, desk chairs that actually roll, file cabinets that lock, and lighting so we can see…just to name a few.

I have learned that the company you keep will either give you a heart for missions or take it away from you.

First Presbyterian Church folks spent time with me personally as a mission which has enlarged my heart as a missionary in my Jerusalem (Athens), Judea (Limestone County), Samaria (our nation), and yes, even beyond.

The attention comes from their hearts; therefore, hearts get blessed. I’m thinking a better name for them might be First Presbyterian: the people-hearted Church on our Square! Regardless, God is smiling down and heaping up many heavenly rewards!

Pawsh Pet Spaw: Where Your Pooch Can Be Pampered

by Ali Elizabeth Turner A little over five years ago, Kimberly Gosser opened a pet grooming salon at her home in West Limestone and more recently moved to a new location at 16217 Shaw Road in Athens. The new shop is on the corner of Hwy 72 and Shaw.

Kimberly is the mother of four and is married to Logan, who honorably served our country with distinction while in the Army. They left Colorado to come here for Logan’s new job as well as for Kim to do what she does so well, and that is, groom animals.

To say that Kim’s background and experience in the dog grooming world is impressive is no exaggeration.

She was born and raised in Los Angeles, and her uncle was a legendary handler/ trainer/groomer for the film industry. Whether that gifting can be inherited or not, I don’t know, but Kimberly herself has groomed the dogs of such celebrities as Kevin Costner, Selma Hayak, and Betty White.

Kimberly showed her first dog at the age of 7, groomed her first dog professionally at

the age of 12, and now has more than 35 years of experience grooming every type, size, and breed of dog, along with a few cats! She has worked in California, Kentucky, and Colorado, and her LA shop and staff were able to groom nearly 90 dogs a day.

In the past, Kimberly’s focus in the industry has been the “high end” realm of the dog competition world. She has been responsible for preparing dogs for famous shows with the intent of dazzling the judges, and she has certainly succeeded. However, one of the things I so enjoy about her is her heart for animals in general, not just the “canine elite.” I have watched her literally by the hour groom scared dogs, grumpy dogs, big dogs, little dogs, skinny dogs, obese dogs, dogs that sound like Chewbacca from Star Wars, dogs that snapped at her; and I can say that her patience has been stunning. In the case of the dog who tried to bite her, she looked at me and said matter-of-factly, “I was waiting for that. I could

feel his muscles tense up.” By close to the end of the grooming session, the dog literally put his face in her hand, was totally relaxed, and fell asleep as she finished up. If I had a dog, I would run, not walk or

trot to Pawsh Pet Spaw to have it groomed!

Besides having the highest certifications in the grooming industry, Kimberly is also a Certified Canine Behavior Specialist; essentially she is a true “dog whisperer.” She is the founder of the Alabama Professional Groomers’ Association, which is her brainchild. The APGA is an organization which she hopes will help to make certification for groomers become mandatory.

One of the things that is distressing to Kimberly is the fact that licensure for dog groomers in Alabama is not required, and people will often cut corners that stress everyone out -the dogs, the owners, and the groomers.

While chatting with Kimberly, I learned that dogs can have special needs for their skin just like humans do. Most of us would not use dishwashing detergent to wash our own hair, but will do so for our dogs, and it can cause skin problems. She will take a look at your dog’s skin and determine what would be the best for their breed and state

of health. I also learned a lot about dog’s nails, and how important it is to keep them trimmed. If dogs have nails that get too long, it can cause great pain, and getting them trimmed without understanding the length of the quick can be even more painful.

Kim has several ways of dealing with it, including using a mini-Dremel with a light, and can usually do just a bit at a time in order not to traumatize them further. Sometimes, she has to recommend that a vet sedate them and have the procedure done in the vet’s office, but she avoids that if at all possible.

Kimberly’s prices for grooming are slightly more than those charged by other groomers, but she specializes in the cases that are not necessarily the easiest, and has a brisk business of repeat customers. In any profession, you get what you pay for, and her work speaks for itself.

Sister Stonehaven And The Sting

We have a sister city, her name is Stonehaven, and she is in Scotland. When the City of Athens celebrated its 200th anniversary back in November, the citizens of Stonehaven celebrated with us via Skype. Recently, some of the citizens of Stonehaven came to visit us, and soon Mayor Ronnie is going to be returning the favor by visiting them personally. He is also going to be “livin’ the dream” of any serious golfer. Soon he will be able to play at St. Andrews golf course, the birthplace of the game.

Mayor Ronnie showed me an antique spoon he had been given bearing the name of Stonehaven, and told me about a member of the visiting Stonehaven team who literally described his job for the Scottish city as being that of the “blatherer.” The folks from Stonehaven wore their kilts, were treated to southern hospitality, and were given the chance to go to the Space & Rocket Center.

The mayor told me about the ongoing growth spurt we are experiencing, and it’s actually all the way up to 19.6%, which is hard to get your head around.

“Our biggest success is our biggest challenge,” Mayor Ronnie said, and we talked about the Paul

Newman/ Robert Redford movie, The Sting.

If you are not familiar with the story, Newman and Redford play the part of two men who devise an elaborate scheme to swindle a crime boss who had murdered their friend.

Unexpectedly, the film has a number of philosophical and transparent moments, and one of them has become somewhat iconic. Redford says to Newman, “He’s not as tough as he thinks.” Newman replies, “Neither are we.”

The mayor’s point in bringing up The Sting was not that we should turn to a stacked card game to avenge wrongs in our city or raise funds for Athens, it was all about the issue of pride,

the thing he had been thinking about so much.

“In the first place, leadership is not a sprint, and it’s not a marathon,” he said. “It’s a relay, and we have to hand off the city in a way that is better than the way we received it,” he added. He went on. “We can enjoy the growth, and we should, but let’s not get too wrapped up in how special we are,” he said.

“I hope that all of us, especially politicians and legislators remember that we are here to serve,” said Mayor Ronnie. “To whom much is given, much is required,” I added, and he agreed.

Then it was time to pray, which we did, and then it was time for Ronnie to roll.

In Need Of A Steeple Standing Strong

We have turned our convictions aside in order not to offend anyone, and in doing so, we have lost our moral compass. I say that because we live in a time when if a Christian takes a stand for what the Bible deems as immorally corrupt or filthy, they are seen as a religious zealot or nut job. It saddens me that we live in a world that tries to glorify man more than glorify God Almighty; yet too few Christians will stand up for what they believe in.

This ideology has created a soft generation of Christians, and with each passing day, we are getting softer by the minute. We allow just an inch of compromise into our lives, and in doing so, we lose an entire mile. I oftentimes refer to the Bible and try to use God's Word as the Final Authority in my life. I am not perfect in this, and I am learning and growing every day, but I hope this article inspires you to do the same with God's Word.

It is my earnest hope that you too will take a stand, dive into reading the Bible, seek God, and see what personal convictions you need to take a stand upon.

When we stop taking a stand, we lose out on issues. It is extremely hard to reverse what has already been undone, but all things are possible with God. Not too long ago, I heard a song by the musical group The Wylers on Wheels which said, “Many people say the Church should move on, change their standards, maybe not stand so strong.

They say just get the people in the door; the way you do it doesn't matter anymore.”

This song is exactly what many people are saying but it also goes on to say, “It's a world full of people in need of a steeple. A steeple standing strong. No matter the size, there is no need to compromise because we are a world in need of a steeple standing strong.”

Cigarette Butts Are Litter, Too!

Americans are smoking fewer cigarettes than ever before, yet cigarette butts remain the most littered item in the U.S. and around the world.

Smokers who would probably never litter a coffee cup or candy wrapper will often “flick” their cigarette butts without a second thought.

Surprisingly, 77% of people

surveyed by Keep American Beautiful stated they did not think of cigarette butts as litter. Many people believe cigarette filters are biodegradable, and because of their small size, they appear insignificant – almost invisible. Many smokers truly believe that cigarette butts won’t cause any harm.

Not only are they harmful, but discarded butts are an eyesore. Just look along the curbs and at intersections in

our community. They are everywhere!

Filter Facts The center of most cigarette filters, the part some think is made from cotton, is actually made of a type of plastic called cellulose acetate that can take 18 months to 10 years to decompose. The fibers making up the filter are thinner than sewing thread and a single filter contains more than 12,000 of these fibers.

Cigarette filters were created to absorb some of the toxic chemicals in cigarette smoke and to catch solid toxic chemical particles, referred to as tar, created by burning tobacco.

These lightweight, toxinfilled filters are easily carried by wind and rain into our waterways, poisoning living organisms that come into contact with them. The tobacco that may still be attached to the filter adds nicotine to the environment, which is also toxic.

TRILLIONS (that’s 12 zeros) of cigarette filters are littered every year! Five trillion cigarette filters weigh about 2 billion pounds. Although the toxins in one little filter may not seem like much, multiply that by trillions and we have an environmental nightmare on our hands.

Fire is another result of improperly discarded cigarette butts. According to the National Fire Protection Agency, smoking materials such as cigarettes and cigars cause around 90,000 fires every

year in the United States.

These fires cost hundreds of lives, injure even more, and cause millions of dollars in property damage.

Then people gonna treat you better, you’re gonna find, yes, you will, that you’re beautiful as you feel.” Those encouraging words are the chorus of Carole King’s fabulous song “Beautiful.” The song encourages you to see yourself in a positive light; to project the love you have inside out to the world, and you will become as beautiful as you feel.

Do you always feel beautiful? Do you always have the energy to put a smile on your face and go out into the world? I know that I don’t! Some days I struggle to find the beauty within myself.

Whenever I start to compare myself to others around me, a dangerous internal dialogue begins. Self-doubt creeps to the surface. Feelings of failure and never being good enough flood my inner thoughts. Why am I not losing weight as quickly as they are? Why can they eat whatever they want and still loose weight?

Why am I not good enough?

How dangerous! We must not compare ourselves to others. We are all uniquely and wonderfully made. We all have our own talents, skills, and abilities. Telling yourself you are good enough is so important to your health. Be your own cheerleader! Allow

yourself to celebrate each victory. No one’s journey looks the same.

Everyone at some point in life will feel like they don’t measure up. When those thoughts of self-doubt start creeping into your mind, step back and take a deep breath. You are beautiful. You are exactly where you should be. Slow down, enjoy the journey.

Remember that you will appreciate the mountains in your life more after you’ve walked through the valleys.

Stay focused on your goal, even when you are struggling. Continue to nourish your body with healthy foods, and know that you are on the right path. The recipe this week is an easy one-pot dish. It is a Stuffed Pepper Skillet. You can have this healthy meal on the table for your family in just a few minutes, and it is sure to be a hit with the family.

Recipe #11 Stuffed Pepper Skillet What You Need:

1 lb. ground beef One 12 oz bag of cauliflower rice, steamed 1 green bell pepper, diced 1 red bell pepper, diced 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 can diced tomatoes and chiles, drained 1 Tbsp tomato paste Salt and pepper to taste 1 tsp chili powder 1 cup beef broth ½ tsp paprika 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese ¼ tsp onion powder ¼ cup shredded pepper jack cheese

Directions:

Add ground beef, bell peppers, and garlic to skillet. Cook until veggies are tender and beef is no longer pink and is cooked through. Drain any excess grease.

While beef is cooking, steam cauliflower rice in microwave per package directions.

To beef mixture add in cauliflower rice, seasonings, tomato paste, diced tomatoes with green chiles, and broth. Simmer

over medium-low heat for 5-8 minutes, stirring occasionally until liquid is absorbed.

Add pepper jack cheese to skillet and stir until melted.

Sprinkle top of skillet with mozzarella cheese, cover until cheese is melted.

Nature and Nature’s God

The United States of America is one of God’s greatest gifts to humanity. Such a declaration is belittled in a culture shaped by the left leaning mainstream media.

Many don’t really know why America is particularly special. America, unlike many sovereign countries before her, developed a value system that allowed man to earn his success justly, even after failure. Society has grown to be impatient, and wants success and justice like it wants its popcorn- nuked to perfection. They don’t realize they are killing both.

America’s Declaration of Independence clearly expresses the condition of man. The founding fathers understood that man is inclined to suffer under tyranny rather than justify the cost of freedom. Their reference comes from the Ju-

deo-Christian viewpoint.

God made man with the ability to endure his mistakes, and with mercy, excel. Twentieth century dictators took advantage of man’s condition in order to murder millions.

Socialist dictatorships regulated man’s capability to advance. When a government becomes a god with no standard for liberty, one is left with tyranny.

Secularists assert that because Americans and Christians fail, their beliefs are morally inferior.

Similar to how one can’t judge a religion completely by its followers; one can’t judge a nation merely by its citizens.

The fundamental beliefs and the law that governs a religion or a nation are where one should investigate.

Man is flawed. Absolute morality exists. But, an ideal theocracy is im-

possible.

Theocracies attempt to legislate morality to the point of implosion. Secularists aim to peddle to humanity the philosophy of relative ethics, which invariably fails. The religious community can’t debate ethics independently from God, and looks unintelligent. What is to be done?

Defend nature. Nature has an order, a value system that requires respect and perpetuation. When the left carelessly removes a proven element of nature from a social system, the system begins to fail. Every issue the left touches regresses.

Natural law is like a game of Jenga. Conservatives and classic Liberals (or Libertarians) want to leave the structure alone. Leftists want to play with it. They pull the blocks, and cause undue stress on the blocks below. They could just put

the block back, but instead they replace it with a Lego piece. The leftists see the structure begin to fail, and they frame conservatives as bad for doing little to nothing. Conservatives just want the left to put the block back.

All of history gives reference to what will either advance or devastate a civilization. Natural law requires reason, logic, and integrity. Omission and substitution weaken the outcome. The left wants to substitute natural law with shamelessness and meaninglessness in every facet of society. They assert, man doesn’t need determination, women don’t need connection, children don’t need parents, sex doesn’t need sacredness, education doesn’t need truth, art doesn’t need talent, business doesn’t need profit, justice doesn’t need a jury, and religion doesn’t need a God. Perhaps C.S. Lewis expressed it best when he stated in Pilgrim’s Regress, “You don’t know the difference between what nature has meant for nourishment, and what it meant for garbage.”

English historian, Edward Gibbon, summed up the empire’s decay in five major arguments: breakdown of the family, paganism, high taxation, government expansion, and excess of pleasure.

The country’s decline shows similarities to the Roman Empire’s fall: collectivism, high taxation, expansion of government, censorship of religion, and elevation of men.

The first 10 amendments of the Constitution make it nearly impossible for a central leader to strip any individual of their natural, God-given liberty.

One of our founding fathers, John Adams writes, “We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion.

Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution… Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”

For current social justice warriors to allege that the United States is fundamentally, institutionally, and systematically discriminatory would be an illogical lie. Individuals may discriminate to the point of violating others, but the system is not inferior, the individual is. Simply because an individual discriminates doesn’t mean their liberty can automatically be violated. The system corrects social/economic disorder naturally, in keeping with Nature’s law.

When I first interviewed Brad back in September of 2010, the recession was raging, but they had just been able to build a new building. What I thought at the time was, “They must be doing something right,” and I was correct.

Since that time members of my family and I have had to use Brad’s services on more than one occasion, and I have never been anything but pleased. This has included a deer strike and some fender benders.

I also am in the process of getting some of our old Athens Now outdoor boxes re-painted. They were looking pretty bad, and we are going to get them painted and switched out one box at a time. The days of pretending that rust can pass for shabby chic will soon be over, and I am sure we will all be relieved!

Another feature that has changed greatly in the last several years has been dealin order to take care of the needs of the customer. A client called with a complaint, and as he listened patiently, he told her he agreed with her and gave her his word that he would get it taken care of.

In 2019, he’s up to 17. He used to only be able to paint six cars a day, but with a new Accudraft paint bay made in Italy, they can do twice that and turn out 12 cars per day.

I first met Steven when he spoke at our local BNI (Business Network International) meeting on May 14. In a world where it seems that there are fewer and fewer coincidences, I discovered that we were literally a few hundred feet away from each other on the day Saddam Hussein was arraigned by the Iraqis, on what was known then as Camp Victory South. You see, Chief Warrant Officer 4 Conway was waiting at Griffin Pad in “his” Chinook helicopter ready to take off and defend us if there were any incursions that demanded the transport of a Quick Response Force. I doubt I’ll ever tire of thanking him for his service and for keeping me safe.

Steven is a decorated pilot, has survived a helicopter crash, did several tours in both Iraq and Afghanistan, is married to Natasha, and is the father of two teenage boys. He and Natasha met in Panama when their parents were stationed there; he was 14 and she was 12.

She has always been the love of his life, and he will be the first to tell you that she deserves many medals as the wife of a vet who has been deployed many, many times.

Steven is also someone who came to the point that he knew he was in trouble; multiple deployments, combat stress, PTSD, and alcohol combined to make a literal cocktail that could have ended his life. He chose

instead to ground himself, get help, and while it was the hardest decision he ever made, the result has been nothing short of transformational for Steve, his family, and those he now helps in his new career. “I drove my truck to Emerald Coast Behavioral Health in Panama City. Commander Neil Armstrong and lunar module pilot Buzz Aldrin, both American, landed the Apollo Lunar Module Eagle on July 20, 1969.

It was an amazing thing, and everyone I knew wanted to become an astronaut after that. I never wanted to be an astronaut, but I have been amazed by our space program, space movies, and books about space.

When the Hubble Telescope was launched in April 1990, it was the most significant thing to happen since Galileo invented the telescope in 1610.

Ol’ Miz Doctor Powers

www.jerrybarksdale.com Back in the1950s “Ol’ Miz Doctor Powers” (called Pie-eers by locals) was one of Athens’ most colorful characters. Her name was Mabel Claire Gray, born in Elkmont, and the wife of Dr. A. D. Powers, one of Limestone County’s most prominent physicians.

They lived in a rambling white house at the corner of 1st Avenue and North Jefferson Street one block north of Powers Hospital, now known as Powers Apartments. It was the first hospital built in Limestone County.

Ol’ Miz Powers was creme de la creme of the Athens social set, but that never interfered with expressing herself in the clearest terms.

According to the authors of Gray, Powers, and their interelated [sic] families, Descendants of Col. Thomas Holden Wade, Miz Powers was attending a Presbyterian revival where the sermon topic was sin and going to hell. “You’re going to hell if you play cards and you’re going to hell if you smoke,” said the preacher. Miz Powers had heard enough. She stood and said, “I like to play bridge, and I’ve been smoking since before it was decent for a lady to smoke. And I’m not going to hell!”

Then she huffed out.

She often went to the Limestone Bank and cashed checks. Instead of making a deposit,

she rolled up the bills and stuffed them down her bra. “I’m depositing them in the Breast National Bank,” she would say.

Ol’ Miz Powers drove a Fleetwood Cadillac, a 2½ ton, 8-cylinder land yacht, which she parked wherever it was convenient, which was usually in the middle of the street.

It was said that she could out cuss a sailor. Mama was sitting in the hospital waiting room when Dr. Powers returned from a medical conference to find that Miz Powers had redecorated the waiting rooms with new curtains. Dr. Powers didn’t approve and snatched them down.

Miz Powers took offense and an F-5 cuss fight ensued.

Athens installed parking meters that had to be fed coins. They hired young McElyea to ride around on a red, three-wheel motorcycle and ticket violators for illegal parking. Locals called him Red Ryder. The sound of Red Ryder’s motorcycle sent shoppers scurrying to feed the meter. He was ticketing Ol’ Miz Powers Caddy when she walked up.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

“I’m writing you a ticket, Miz Powers.”

That’s when she introduced a new phrase in the English lexicon of cuss words. “You are nothing but a revolving

Red Ryder was puzzled.

“What’s that, Miz Powers?”

“You are a son of a bitch anyway you turn!” she said, ripped up the ticket and threw it on the ground.

The introduction of parking meters sowed confusion among some members of the Athens “brain trust.” For example, which meter did you have to feed?

On Saturday mornings, country folks sat on their haunches in front of State National Bank, rolling their own, spitting on the sidewalk, and discussing boll weevils and cotton picking. An elderly gentlemen parked his pickup, got out, walked up the street a few yards, and fed a meter. Red Ryder wrote the old fellow a ticket.

“Now that ain’t right,” said one of the loafers.

“I seen him put money in it.”

One of the more intellectual loafers weighed in. “Well, maybe he was supposed to feed the meter where he parked.”

They all agreed that the old gentlemen had been wrongly treated. Anyway, who ever heard of having to pay to park your vehicle?

In addition to inventing new cuss words, Ol’ Miz Powers was handy with a pistol. According to her great granddaughter (steemipatina.com), it was a hot summer

night and Miz Powers was home, doors open, trying to catch a breeze when she saw someone lurking in the yard. Dr. Powers was at the hospital a block down the street.

“Get outta here!” she yelled. That was the only warning she gave before opening fire at the lurking figure behind a tree. Pow-powpow-pow-pow!

The trespasser went down groaning in pain.

“Don’t shoot, Miz Powers! It’s the police.”

Doc Powers heard five shots ring out and figured it was Miz Powers’ .32 Smith & Wesson speaking. “That’s Mable’s gun,” he remarked. “I guess I better go see about it.” He found the wounded policeman, carried him to his hospital, and removed the bullet…no charge.

When I was a kid living in Booger Town, I walked past the Powers’ home on Saturday mornings headed to the Ritz Theater. During the fall, a small, wiry, black man was usually raking leaves and piling them between the sidewalk and curb. Miz Powers would be standing on her front porch, fists on hips, directing the little fellow and making sure no leaf was missed. I was afraid of her and always hurried down the sidewalk.

The Sutton boys and their Booger Town gang also walked to the Ritz

on Saturday mornings.

The first to see the leaf pile would yell, “Last one there is a rotten egg!” The boys would take off running and jump into the leaves, scattering them over the lawn and sidewalk.

They would run off laughing and hollering before Miz Powers made the scene. Oh boy! What fun. It was a Saturday morning ritual.

There was a fire plug located between the sidewalk and curb by the Powers’ home. One Saturday, the Sutton boys, seeing the leaves neatly piled, took off running and laughing and jumped in. Bam! Bong! “Aahgg!” The leaves had been swept over the fire plug. That ended the Sutton boys’ leaf jumping careers.

Several years ago, I told a friend about having seen Miz Powers on her front porch, fists on hips, directing the small black man sweeping leaves.

“Do you know the rest of the story?” he asked me. “When he became ill, Dr. and Miz Powers sent him to the Mayo Clinic where he received the best medical care in the world. They took care of him until he died.”

Dr. Powers died in 1963 at age 80, and Miz Doctor Powers died 8 years later at age 80.

They are buried side by side in the Athens City Cemetery.

Garbage Days

Hello folks, I hope this finds everyone well.

This article I write today makes me think of a dog I was fostering from the shelter years ago. She was Lab and Dane mix and she was a big girl. To see her, I never thought she would be a “fence jumper,” but she had me fooled. The first time she jumped my fence and ran with the neighbor’s dogs, I did not realize she had done it because she was smart enough to jump back into the yard around feeding time. It was not until one day when I went to feed everyone that I noticed she was missing. On top of that, she was getting into my neighbor’s trash on trash day. When I learned all of this, I began to keep a closer eye on her. I even talked with my neighbors about her, asking them not to harm her and promising to clean any mess she made up. I kept

my promise but for her safety, I eventually had to get her to another foster that had a bigger fence.

As far as I know, she is still doing well today.

Why am I sharing this?

Every garbage day, I witness trash being torn into by other neighbors’ dogs.

I have even spoken to those who let their dogs run loose. It has done little good. In the county, there is no leash law; so dogs can run loose. But, they can be picked up by Animal Control, and anyone who has to pick up their dog from the animal shelter will need to pay a fee; and if there is no proof of a rabies vaccine, there will be a fee for that too. Some of us jokingly refer to this as “Doggie Jail.” In saying that, let this be a reminder that if someone is missing their dog, they should always check the shelter first.

How can we prevent dogs

from raiding the garbage every garbage day? Who is responsible if this does happen? We are all equally responsible, the garbage owner and the dog’s owner. Even with no leash law in the county, every dog should be kept up with. But there are many who think letting their dog run loose is okay. It is alright on the dog owner’s property, but not off the property.

Anyway, if the garbage is yours, know that putting food scraps or even food into the trash without properly bagging it will attract dogs and other animals. It will only lead to a huge mess requiring clean up.

So, let’s talk about what can be done as preventive measures. What I always do, and this never fails me, is I wake up before the garbage truck runs its route and put my bagged garbage out. Every now

and again, my neighbors, who always place their garbage out the night before, get raided by the dogs or other animals.

Now, let me say that some of my neighbors never have this problem even when they put their garbage out the night before, and that is because they take preventive measures and bag any food scraps so the scent is not detectible. If I were to allow food to be in my trash, I would bag it, seal it well, and use Febreze, which is a magical product that covers scent very easily. Garbage cans are another option, but in our county, all trash must be bagged, or it will not be picked up. For a garbage can to be effective, it should be secured in place to prevent being knocked over.

Another sure method to prevent dogs from raiding the garbage is to keep

them put up. Let me remind those who are having problems with their trash being raided, please be patient and speak to those who own the dogs.

Try and be as diplomatic as possible. Hot tempers will only lead to disputes and can harm neighbor relations. Please, please, please, do not shoot your neighbor’s dog as a way to solve the problem because many of us love our dogs as if they were our own kids. I don’t know about anyone else, but I get crazy when it comes to my dogs; and I imagine many think like me.

We certainly do not need a “John Wick” problem either. One more thing, poison is a bad idea too.

Not only will it harm the dog, but what if the poison was carried back to a child who loves their dog? Think about these things. There are consequences to our actions, and I hope we all can get along. Be responsible and keep your dogs safe, and if it turns out your dog is the culprit, be responsible and clean up the mess they make.

After all, if we are responsible dog owners, it is our duty to answer for what they have done.

“Remember to love your dogs because they love you. Maybe not the way you want them to, like chewing up your favorite shoes or what not, but that is just love chewing. Be thankful for the time you have with them always.”

The Assertive You

“Assertiveness is your ability to act in harmony with your self-esteem without hurting others.”

- Author Unknown In my last article, we discussed three forms of communication: passive, aggressive, and passive-aggressive.

Hopefully, I convinced you that none of these is truly effective in communicating and interacting with others. Most of us can see ourselves in one or all three of these styles, sometimes depending on the other person, sometimes depending on the situation, and sometimes depending on both.

Like you, sometimes I struggle to express myself clearly. Assertive communication is a style of communication in which you can state your opinions and feelings, while firmly advocating for your

rights and needs without violating the rights of others. When you are assertive, you are showing that you value yourself, your time, and your emotional, physical, and spiritual needs.

You are an advocate for yourself, while being respectful of the rights of others.

So, how do you become an assertive communicator? You state your needs and desires clearly, appropriately, and respectfully. Ditto with your thoughts and feelings. You learn to use “I” statements...I feel, I think, I believe…instead of you are, you always, or you never.

Are you someone who is thinking about how to respond or what to say next while the other person is talking? I believe you will communicate esteem for others if you can truly listen without interrupting. Maintain good eye contact and relax your body posture.

When it is your turn to speak, use a calm, clear tone, using the phrase, “To be sure I understood what you said, did you mean….?” This shows you were listening and that you can rephrase what the other person said. Communication is about connection. And the best way to feel connected to others is through expressing yourself with competence and control, while not allowing the other party to abuse or manipulate. Assertive communicators are able to stand up for their rights while respectfully and non-judgmentally relating to others.

Have you met an assertive communicator, or even better, are you one who can communicate assertively?

Then you know that these folks (or you!) have the ability to connect to others without being controlling. The key, in fact, is to be in

control of thoughts and emotions. The impact of a pattern of assertive communication is that these individuals are able to move forward because they address issues and problems as they arise. One of the most difficult challenges most of us face is being able to create a respectful environment, whether it be at home, at school, or at work, where others can grow and advance to their fullest potential. I hope you have or have had the wonderful experience of working for an assertive communicator. This person allows you to learn and mature in a safe, productive environment. (Or if you are the boss, I hope your employees can say this about you.)

What are some thoughts or phrases you can begin to use assertively moving forward? Here are some examples:

“We are both entitled to express ourselves respectfully to each other.”

“I can’t control others, but I can control myself.”

“I’m 100% responsible for my own happiness.”

“I respect the rights of others as much as I respect my own rights.”

The bottom line here is that if you can learn to speak clearly, honestly, and effectively, you will convey confidence, self-control, and responsibility. Assertiveness is fundamental for good mental health and healthy relationships.
