Typically I don’t like to write about events before they happen—in this day of continual media malpractice it comes way too close to just seeming contrived and could be rightfully painted with the “fake news brush.” However, the latest version of “dump on the Trump” with respect to the grand party planned for our nation’s birthday stirred me to take the risk.

Because of the 4th of July holiday, Athens Now had to be produced early, and seeing as I try hard in each edition to have at least a few things that are tied to local or national events in as close to real time as possible, discussing the idea of a parade with a strong military presence before it actually occurs seemed

like a necessary conversation.

Question: Is it reasonable for President Trump, or any American president to have a military-based parade connected with the celebration of the birth of our country? The naysayers cite everything from the fact that supposedly the streets of DC can’t handle the weight of tanks to the cost of the parade to the US taxpayers. They claim that it is a throwback to the days of the USSR, or currently to China or North Korea. To their core, it is believed that it is wrong for any nation to make a polite show of force.

And while I understand that there are those who sincerely believe that there shouldn’t be any military

at all, and know this to be true because I used to be one of them, I would like to make a case for the parade.

First of all, l am curious as to why the spending of 2.5 million dollars to express extravagant thanks to our military is such a problem, when we are surrounded by lawmakers who honestly think it’s reasonable to promise trillions to people who never give the freedoms we have as Americans much thought, much less honoring the people who ensure those freedoms are still in place.

My understanding is that the tanks are not going to be rumbling through DC, they are going to be placed carefully so as to not do the streets any harm. That’s a good thing,

I reckon, but shouldn’t the streets of our Capitol be the strongest in the nation, seeing as those who would do us harm wouldn’t think twice about destroying the streets of the Capitol if they were attacking us?

Is this portended parade a clarion call to upgrade some infrastructure? Just a thought…

What does a parade that includes fly-overs (my absolute favorites, even when I was a pacifist) that are executed with such precision, that legend has it the wings get so close that sometimes they trade paint with each other say to our friends, our enemies, and our frenemies alike? To me, it simply says, “Don’t tread on me,” something that is as old and as American as apple pie. People don’t like the idea that defiantly defending the nation is woven into the fabric of its foundation, but I believe in my heart the sight of how well protected we are, the smell of spectacular fireworks, the sound of music that celebrates a grand experiment that is not over by a long shot is a great way to say thank you to our Father, our Founders and our fighters.

Battlefields And Ballet

It may seem like quite a stretch to think of a battle-hardened Marine as being a ballet dancer, but before Roman Baca had to deal with the aftermath of fighting in Fallujah, he was a classically trained danseur de ballet. His CV in the dance world is most impressive, both pre and post-Fallujah, and it was actually his wife’s idea to start Exit12, Roman’s dance company.

Roman enlisted in the Marines because he wanted to make a difference, and felt deeply compelled to serve his country. This was just before 9/11, and he knew that it would not be long before his commitment to serve his country would be put to the test of battle. Interestingly, some of what motivated him to enlist in the first place was the discipline of dance. Being a dancer of any type demands great physical stamina and a fierce set of goals. There is a community and camaraderie amongst dancers, so the idea of being in a literal “Band of Brothers” was already something to which he was accustomed.

When Roman came home, he was self-aware enough that he knew he was in trouble. There was the common anger, depression, inner conflict, and he was no fun to live with.

He assumed that his ballerina wife, Lisa Fitzgerald, would become fed up with him and leave. One day, she asked him, “If you could do anything, what would you do?” He answered, “Start a dance company.” “OK, let’s do it,” she said. So they did. To say that Exit12 is an anomaly in the dance world is an understatement, but miraculously they have received funding and recognition from some of the highest echelons in the arts worldwide.

So, what is Exit12? It is a

dance company that seeks to tell the soldier’s story through dance. This is not “men in tights,” this is a troupe that most of the time performs in ABUs, the desert camo uniforms worn in the Great Sandbox, and they even dance in standard issue desert boots. They also have props that resemble M16s, and to watch Roman teach his dancers respect for the weapon, how to “shoot,” and be situationally aware is a marvel.

Then to have it all woven into the choreography is even more so. They have filmed dances in subways, courtyards, as well as on traditional stages. To me the most unusual is their annual Memorial Day performance on the deck of the retired aircraft carrier, the USS Intrepid.

as a powerful modality in PTSD recovery due to the understanding that trauma shows up in muscle memory, and “dancing it out” is indeed “a thing.” He has given a Ted Talk that is most informative, and even returned to Iraq to bring dance to the young people of Erbil, which is in the north where Kurds love Americans. Can battle and ballet be blended?

As was my continual observation while in Iraq, the passion to defend on the part of troops was matched with the passion to help, and Roman was involved in getting water and supplies to the population in general, and school supplies to children in particular. What

The Scout House Street Party with music and food trucks will be Saturday, July 6, from 5-9 p.m. on East Street beside Scout Music House.

Plato Jones, a Tuscaloosa cover band comprised of Athens musicians, will be the headliner. The band debuted in 2005 to serve “the world one ear at a time.”

The original band members started playing music at Athens High School and formed the band while at the University of Alabama. Current members are Tyler Crawford, William Stephenson and Ian Greenhaw. The band has performed throughout the South, playing rock, funk and blues.

Opening for Plato Jones will be local musicians: ● Astro Diggins – Psychedelic rock/R&B soul/ blues-rock ● Elate Euphoria - Psychedelic rock/alternative ● DCrook – Christian rap The party kicks off Athens Arts League’s Alabama Music Series, sponsored in part by the Muscle Shoals National Heritage Area and current and former members of the Limestone County Legislative Delegation. In addition, the League is renovating the 1938-era Scout House into Scout Music House to host house concerts and provide hands-on training for students interested in marketing, performing, event planning, recording, stage set up and other areas of the music industry. The League recently replaced the rotten roof thanks to funds raised from Anderson East’s benefit

What Makes Ronnie Roll

Gary, Gary, Keith And The 4th

by Ali Elizabeth Turner In came Mayor Ronnie fresh from a staff breakfast held in honor of his 75th birthday, and he had a book in his hand entitled, Spy Pilot: Francis Gary Powers, The U-2 Incident, And A Controversial Cold War Legacy. It is written by Powers’ son, Gary, Jr., along with Keith Dunnavant, who is Athens’ own native son. Keith has been highly successful as an author and historian, and how he and Gary, Jr. came together is a story in and of itself.

Keith had spoken at Rotary, and gave the members a refresher course on the U-2 incident that it is doubtful anyone will forget anytime soon.

“That room was completely silent as Keith spoke,” the mayor told me. The U-2 incident was one of the defining moments of the Cold War between the US and Russia, and is the subject of Steven Spielberg’s masterful film, Bridge of Spies. Powers was the U-2 pilot who was shot down and held in Russia, and a prisoner exchange was made with Rudolph Abel, a Soviet spy captured in

America. The exchange occurred on a bridge in East Germany named the Glienicke Bridge, and so many spy exchanges were made there that it became known as the Bridge of Spies.

The cloak-and-dagger of Cold War stories had a strong impact on the American culture of the ‘50s and ‘60s, but until now very little was known as to what happened to and with Gary Powers, Sr. He was in a Soviet prison for nearly two years, and when he was released, was treated with the highest suspicion because he did not commit suicide as he had been allegedly instructed by the CIA to do. Was he in fact a traitor, a coward; just who was Gary Powers, Sr.? His son, Gary, Jr, was only 12 when his father was killed in a chopper crash in 1977, and never got to hear about it firsthand from his dad be-

“I feel like Gary and I were meant to do this.” The extent of research conducted by both of them was massive, and the lessons learned have so impacted the mayor that we may just have a series on our hands.

by D. A. Slinkard D.A. Slinkard is the manager of the Athens Staples store The Fourth of July is upon us and this day symbolizes another birthday of the greatest nation known to man.

It is hard to fathom the amount of blood, sweat, and sacrifice that has made our everyday living possible, from the birth of our nation all the way to the year 2019. Our country has been able to overcome many things, and I believe it is by the grace of God we have the opportunity to live in this great nation. Our freedom is not free, as it comes at a cost. The next time you see a soldier, whether active, inactive or retired, I urge you to thank them for their service.

I do not believe that we, as a country, show enough gratitude to the men and women in our military. Every day we wake up we should be giving gratitude to God Almighty who IS in Heaven, and we should be showing gratitude to our military for the FREEDOM we enjoy.

I do not believe anyone of us could imagine how different our lives would be without God and our military.

In fact, I believe we have become a nation that has been lulled to sleep when it comes to our desperate need for God and our desperate need for our military.

We take for granted what could be lost in the blink of an eye.

I think of the scripture 2 Chronicles 7:14, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven; and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.” This is straight out of God's Word and I believe His Word to be true, but we are living in a time in which it seems one no longer believes he/she needs God. I could not imagine living a life without the realization of my need for my Saviour. Yet here we have more and more people growing colder

toward the Spirit of God and growing closer to living in the flesh. I wonder what our forefathers would think of the direction the United States of America has moved towards. I still scratch my head at the people who think socialism is a great idea. I cannot help but wonder what is wrong with these people who believe the government is going to meet their every need. We have the greatest technology around us, yet we still have these people who cannot seem to realize the dangers of what socialism does and the negative impact it has on a country. Look no further than Venezuela.

It is time we take heed to what God instructs us to do. It is time we humble ourselves. It is time we

pray to God and seek His face. It is time we turn from our wicked ways, such as the millions of lives lost in the murdering of innocent babies.

It is time Christians live out the values we are to embody. I immediately think about 2 Timothy 2:19, “Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”

I read this scripture and the part that really stood out to me was that we, as Christians, should depart from the iniquity in our lives. We are the greatest nation known to man, but it is time we turn our way of thinking back towards God. And just like the scripture says, I be-

lieve that God will heal our land. If we can get back to the basics, I do believe we can see the change needed in our country. The politician or the government will not make things better for you. We keep searching for the answer when, truthfully, the answer has been here the entire time. In fact, the answer was here when the world was created, not by some big bang or explosion, but when God spoke the world into existence.

The next time you think about the Fourth of July, I hope you realize there is more to it than just fireworks, hotdogs, and hamburgers. Our freedom is by the grace of God and the military we have protecting our country. Thank you for your service.

Passion to understand the unknown. Passion to know the next best thing. And most importantly, the passion to grow. Internal growth is measurable through many channels.

There is that person that you just don’t understand why they stay on you. Ten years ago, that person could send you on a mental voyage of frustration and stress.

Today, with time, acceptance, and a persistent and constant choice to let that person affect you less and less, you are able to not only tolerate that person, you are now

able to excel despite that person. You go home and that person isn’t on your mind. You grew into the type of person that succeeds despite their noise.

For those of you that attack the gym, there was that one exercise that eluded you for months or even years. Maybe it was the bench press. Or maybe it was to run a faster mile. It may have even been to run a mile, period. Looking back, you kept asking yourself why you even try. Maybe what kept you going was simply the goal of losing weight, being more attractive, feeling energized, or perhaps

it was just the fact that you believe in living as healthily as possible.

Upon further examination, it is easy to say that you wanted to accomplish something like losing weight. But why?

Because someone told you too? I think that it is more reasonable to consider that ultimately you did what you did because you told yourself to do that. You told yourself that you were going to the gym even though you were tired after work. You told yourself to push a little harder at the gym when you got there. You told yourself that you would be back the next day.

But why?

Inborn in every individual is the need for growth. In life, there is either growth or there is stagnation. Yes, there are short periods of flatlands. The problem is that you are still moving forward in your life, then the terrain changes. Some people look at a mountain and think maybe they could climb it. Others look at that same mountain and immediately start thinking about the mountain they will climb after they climb the first one.

In the latter’s mind, they have already climbed the first mountain and have moved onto the

next one. They converted a desire into a passion with their mindset.

They assumed that they would conquer the first mountain and fell in love with the idea of climbing mountains in general.

They took a simple goal and turned it into a lifestyle.

You see, mankind is inborn with the ability to stay alive, strive, and thrive. Ask anyone who is a top performer if they are just alive or if they are thriving in their chosen field. They live with passion.

Passion in today’s world is quite cliché. People say they are passionate about all kinds of things.

Pay close attention to what this reveals though.

People, in general, need passions in their lives.

And the good news is that passion is already inside of you. The less attractive news is that you don’t just let out your passion, you have to act on it. Action realizes potential. Tapping your potential is doing just a little more than you are already capable of.

Next time you put your hands or mind to work, remember that you do what you do because you told yourself to. Be passionate about it. Love your close ones, build mountains to climb and welcome the life that awaits you. To be honest, life is prettier on the other side. A thriving life full of joy, hard work and peace of mind is a passion worth endeavoring.

When I visit a community filled with tree-lined streets, parks, and landscaped homes and businesses, it makes me feel good; however, it’s not just me. There are studies that show the benefits of green space, landscaping, and trees to our well-being.

According to the National Parks and Recreation Association, parks are emerging as important public health solutions in urban communities. They state that nearly 40 years of research evidence confirms that nearby nature, including parks, gardens, trees (urban forest), and green spaces, support human health and wellness.

The University of Washington’s Urban Forestry/Urban Greening Research found that common, persistent stressors may have a greater impact on health and wellbeing for most people than other traumatic situations.

Summer vacation -- there aren’t many words in the English language that bring so much joy! We don’t always get to take a vacation every year, but this year we carved out a week to go to the beautiful Great Smoky Mountains.

The Smoky Mountains are a little piece of heaven here on earth.

The peace that sitting in nature brings is good for the soul. It helps you reconnect with family and gives you time to reflect on yourself. Vacation can be wonderful time to break free from the stresses of everyday life and truly enjoy time with your family.

Vacation time also brings the chance to “cheat” on your diet.

Scenarios run through your mind, do I eat the pancakes or just have an egg white omelet? Fried chicken or a sensible salad?

French fries or green beans? The struggle is real y’all!

I am going to tell you all a secret. Do you promise not to tell?

I had a pancake…and fried chicken…and ice cream…and fudge. It was delicious! Even though I allowed myself to eat these forbidden foods, I still tried to keep a balance. I would eat sensibly for two meals of the day and allow myself to indulge for one. Vacation is a time for relaxing and celebrating. It’s okay to

celebrate.

One of the most important things I’ve learned during my journey to better health is to not be so hard on myself. Allowing myself to indulge while on vacation could have totally derailed my efforts in the past. But with this new sense of focus, I was able to fall right back in to healthy eating since I’ve returned to the real world.

The recipe this week is a super simple side dish or snack. If you have never tried roasting radishes, you are missing out! Radishes just aren’t for salads anymore. It is a crowd pleaser and your family will be sure to love it. Pair these delicious radishes with grilled chicken and a side salad and you are all set.

So on vacation or while you are celebrating…eat that cookie… enjoy that fried chicken…get yourself an ice cream cone. Then, pick yourself up, get focused back on the end goal, and keep on going! Remember you’ve got this! You can do it! Keep pressing on towards the prize. “The Lord directs the steps of the Godly.

Recipe #13 Garlic Parmesan Roasted Radishes What You Need: Meat Marinade:

2 bunches of radishes, quartered 4 garlic cloves, minced 2 tsps. rosemary, fresh or dried 2 Tbsp. olive oil ¼ cup parmesan cheese, grated Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

In a bowl add radishes, olive oil, garlic, rosemary, salt and pepper. Toss well to combine. Roast for 45 minutes.

Sprinkle the parmesan cheese to coat all the radishes. Bake for an additional 5 minutes until crisp and golden.

Modern Western civilization continues to chip away at the Judeo-Christian foundation upon which it is built. History is either ignored or revised due to the left's agenda to "liberate" the social constructs they believe are causes for inequality and marginalization. They do not realize they are dismantling the foundation by which they live their lives, regardless of whether they hold religious views or not. Refusing to acknowledge the origins of our social structure leaves people who benefit from it vulnerable. As much as a theocracy is not ideal, neither is an overly expressive secular society.

That's why in the United States, the pluralism they are able to embrace is vitally important.

The existence of this type of complexity is present when explaining the Judeo-Christian worldview.

Former British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, expressed it best when he said, “A great city, whose image dwells in the memory of man is the type of some great idea. Rome represents conquest; Faith hovers

over the towers of Jerusalem; and Athens embodies the pre-eminent quality of the antique world, Art.” So, let's break this down.

Rome was the vehicle by which Christianity was able to reach much of what Europe is today.

The root of Christian expression and ethics is Judaism, whose eternal home is Jerusalem.

Finally, Athens was an origin of philosophical reason and science.

All these aspects are elemental and essential to the social structure that gave birth to Europe, England, and the United States. Without consistently balancing these three dimensions expressed in Western culture, society is prone to instability and inevitable self-destruction.

Currently, we are dealing with a culture in the United States that is dead set on pulling down the society they have the privilege of benefitting from. Christian apologist Ravi Zacharias stated, “…We are now standing with our feet planted firmly in mid-air. I would say, while theoretically a person may block God out, logically there will

“the real Abby” was the keynote speaker at the Huntsville Pregnancy Resource Center’s banquet held in April, which was a resounding success. “It was a miracle that we were able to confirm that Ashley is coming to Athens,” said Women’s Resource Center Executive Director, Brooke Thompson. Her excitement about all the good things that are going on at WRC is infectious, which we’ll talk about further. The banquet will be held at the Limestone County Event Center and the doors open at 5:30 p.m., with dinner being served at 6:00.

First, a bit about Unplanned, the movie. It defied the odds and garnered over 18 million dollars domestically at the box office, despite not being allowed to advertise on any networks besides FOX and EWTN. There is so much controversy in the entertainment world regarding abortion that it was produced in secret under a different title, and Ashley Bratcher was told it would be a career-ender for her. Ashley also learned, on the day she got the part, that she had been moments away from being aborted herself, and feels playing this role is part of her calling. On July 12, Unplanned will be released to Cineplex and other independent the-

I asked Brooke what is “new and different” at the Women’s Resource Center, and she was pleased to tell me about several services that are now available because of the generosity of the people of North Alabama. First of all, a WRC dream from years past has been realized in the form of having an ultrasound machine and technician, which is one of the most powerful “proofsof-life” possible for couples who are on the fence regarding making life-affirming choices. Ironically, famous abortion chains use ultrasound technology as well for the purpose of determining the age of the fetus, but clients aren’t allowed to see them.

Also new to the Women’s Resource Center is a team of guys who are advocates for male clients. There is an increase of what can only be termed “post-abortive dads,” who either could not protect their baby from being aborted, or chose not to and now regret it. Up until this point there has not been much available for men or for those (such as I) who to their great regret encouraged someone to get an abortion; but WRC is changing all that.

Brooke kindly encouraged me to attend their seven week post-abortion study which runs in the fall and spring. It is written by Linda Cochrane, is biblically based, and is entitled, “Forgiven and Set Free.”

Great healing has already occurred in my life, and I can see how a group setting could facilitate even more.

The Women’s Resource Center also provides parenting classes for moms and couples, which is a crucial part of making a choice for life successful for all involved. They also have a baby boutique which is stocked with diapers, wipes, clothes, formula and much

more.

Looking ahead, the Women’s Resource Center is planning on being opened later on Thursdays, and is currently opened until 5 p.m. on Tuesdays, which are their busiest.

They are also working on getting resources to provide a special set of services for teen moms who have chosen to keep their babies.

Coping With The Heat

by Nick Thomas, owner of Prime Performance Training, and Certified Sports Nutritionist Summer has most definitely arrived here in the South, and while most all of us are thrilled to welcome the long warm days, it does mean we have to be more careful as we enjoy them. The heat can do some scary things to our bodies and can quickly even cause major damage if we are not mindful.

Heat exhaustion is real and can be quite dangerous. High temperatures and high humidity combine to make for a very extreme environment, especially when doing strenuous physical activity. Some symptoms to be aware of are heavy sweating and a rapid pulse. These are the beginning signs that should not be taken lightly, as without treatment they can lead to heatstroke and can be life-threatening.

sweating, fatigue, thirst, and muscle cramps. This is the precursor to heat exhaustion. At this point it is good to take a break in a cooler place and drink some water and/or a sports drink.

The signs of heat exhaustion one can possibly experience are cool yet moist skin with goosebumps while still in the heat, heavy sweating, faintness, dizziness, fatigue, weak but rapid pulse, low blood pressure upon standing, muscle cramps, nausea, and

headache. If you are experiencing any of these, you need to stop your activity and rest in a cooler place; air conditioning would be preferable, but if that’s not possible find a shaded area. Drink water and even some sports drinks which will give you an electrolyte boost.

If symptoms persist after an hour or so, medical attention should be considered.

There are several ways to help prevent heat exhaustion. Choose loose fitting and lightweight

clothing which aides your body in cooling.

Always wear sunscreen, and do not forget to reapply it about every two hours. Sunburn also affects your body’s ability to cool itself. Stay well hydrated, drinking mainly water and limiting alcohol intake. Be sure to check any warnings on medications you are taking as some medications can have adverse effects when you are exposed to excessive heat. If possible avoid strenuous activity in the hottest part of the day. If you need or

want to do heavy activity in the extreme heat of the day, work your way up to it, in other words, condition your body and let it adjust to the heat over a time period of a few weeks, staying a little longer each time.

Let’s all be smart, stay hydrated, and have a great time enjoying the fun of summer!

The 2019 Limestone County Sheriff’s Youth Mentor Camp

Stephen has 18 years of experience in law enforcement both in Louisiana and Alabama, and he has been everything from a patrolman and information officer, to D.A.R.E officer, to going on the recent raid and filming the confiscated squirrel of recent national network and social media fame. The Youth Mentor Camp is Stephen’s “baby,” and this is the fourth year that the LCSO is reaching out to kids in Alabama who are vulnerable to being easily influenced.

“We want kids to understand the concepts of values, purpose, and community,” Stephen told me. To that end, he and the staff have created a number of activities and lessons that “force” kids to cooperate as a team, and there are leadership lessons woven into all of them. In the past, school resource officers and counselors have been on the lookout for kids that are good kids, but could be considered at risk; and parents are welcome to “nominate”

their children as space allows. “We concentrate on planting seeds with the goal of making these kids better able to cope with negative peer pressure and show leadership instead,” he said.

One of the best things that has come out of previous camps is that graduates along with their parents have become involved in volunteering to help out at the Special Needs Rodeo held each year in May. Being what Stephen describes as “others-minded” is a learned behavior, as is selfishness. There was a time that being selfish was not considered a virtue, and the preoccupation of “looking out for number one” was frowned upon in our society.

Sadly, that is no longer the case, and, as Stephen says, “We are losing out as a result.”

I asked Stephen about one of the team-building activities from previous camps, and he showed me a video of kids being given a raw egg, some tape, some plastic straws, and a baggie. Each team was tasked with coming up with a way to protect the egg from

The winning team came up with a way of shielding the egg on one side with the straws, filling the baggie with air and creating an internal “air bag” which made it possible to drop it from several feet without the egg breaking! It was ingenious, and the kids had so much fun.

types of disasters. Becoming “others-centered” gets very real when campers have the chance to see the kinds of strategies and policies that are in place when people are present whose careers are all about taking care of those in need. In this technological age, getting a chance to see how all the “smart” stuff works to make responders able to do their job more quickly and efficiently is an added bonus.

On a serious note that is handled with some humor, campers learn what it is like to be unable to walk in a straight line when asked by officers who have reason to believe that someone is driving while impaired. There are virtual-reality glasses that replicate what it is like to try and walk while drunk, and the teams have contests to see who can walk the straightest. Spoiler alert: No one can, but some do better than others! The department helicopter will come in for a landing one of the mornings, and the campers will learn about aerial law enforcement surveillance and enforcement.

This year much of the emphasis will be on the process of decision making, both good and bad, which is the key to creating kids who become resistant to peer pressure. There is role playing, and while the campers are having a great time, they will be learning skills that a lot of us had to come by the hard way.

Deputy Young was quick to point out that the camp could not happen without a great deal of community support and donations. “The camp was given a grant by the Lions Club, and several restaurants and stores supply food,” he said. The age for campers is 9-13, and there is no cost to attend.

The camp runs daily from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and buses/ deputies will provide transportation if parents cannot.

Man Trip To Aliceville Museum

by Jerry R. Barksdale www.jerrybarksdale.com We were off on another “man trip” (our fifth), this time to the Aliceville Museum in Aliceville, Alabama. During WWII the small, rural town of approximately 1,500 hosted the largest German POW camp in America. More than 6,100 soldiers of Field Marshall Rommel’s once vaunted Afrika Korps were imprisoned there.

Another 1,000 American military guarded and cared for them.

As always, women weren’t allowed on this trip. As I’ve written before, we didn’t have time to stop for pedicures, shoe shopping, engaging in petty gossip, and arguing about where the fork and napkin go on the dinner table. We gossip about major stuff. And men don’t give a darn where a fork and napkin are placed. Just set a bucket of fried chicken on the table and move back.

Retired Athens cop and Alabama Veterans Museum president, Jerry Crabtree, was driver and official wise cracker.

Museum board member, Bill Ward, retired mathematician and native of Pickens County was guide and color commentator.

Ewell Smith, Museum board member, former Athens Volunteer Fire Fighter, and retired business manager at Athens State University told us a story about an Athens “fire bug” who had numerous blazes that con-

veniently began when the firemen were at church on Sunday morning. The blaze was always extinguished and the rental house saved, but all contents were damaged.

The insurance company stopped paying claims and the fires stopped. We talked about other things, but that’s none of your business.

Aliceville is 45 miles West of Tuscaloosa.

There are two routes to get there. One is I-20 west from Tuscaloosa. We took the scenic route through Bankhead National Forest. Both routes are about the same distance, but you won’t see beautiful kudzu, endless trees, spattered squirrels, and trashy front yards along the interstate. I recommend the scenic route.

Bill Ward was also our trip humorist. Knowing that I take two Lasix pills a day, and sensitive to my needs (when you gotta go - you gotta go!), he pointed out trees large enough for me to hide behind and pee. Good friends are invaluable. If we had been on I-20, I could have been arrested for answering nature’s call. A retired mathematician, Bill once worked out complicated formulas before computers did the work. I tested his knowledge.

“Hey Bill, can you do long division?” He’s quick.

“Sure, bring down your nought and carry the zero.” Wow! He knows his stuff.

In Fayette, signs were posted along the curb that

fb.com/jerry.barksdale.7 said, “Peace be to these streets.” We figured the mayor was planning to install “squeeze chutes” and “tire busters” around their square like in Athens. Once peaceful little Athens where folks attend church three times a week, the women carry guns, and there is no sin (until the sun goes down) has become a divided town. Many citizens complain they can’t circle the courthouse like they used to.

“We need those signs in Athens,” quipped Crabtree. I agree.

We stopped at the Pickens County Courthouse in Carrollton where Bill showed us “the face in the window.” According to Bill, after Henry Wells was arrested for burning the courthouse in 1876, he was placed in the garret of the newly constructed courthouse for safe keeping from a mob. While looking out at the mob, lightning struck and imprinted his likeness on the glass. I saw the image but can’t swear it was Henry since I never met him.

Aliceville (pop. 2397) is quiet and friendly, reminiscent of earlier times in the South when folks sat on their front porch in the evenings and gossiped about their neighbor. Gossip is far more reliable than the evening news and certainly of more interest.

John Gillum, executive director of the museum, was our tour guide and, an excellent one at that.

in rubble and the Statue of Liberty was twisted metal,” John said. “They rushed to the ships railing to see the destruction.

Instead they saw a pulsating and vibrant city.”

Many POWs thought they would be shot. Such is the power of propaganda.

The first group of POWs arrived in Aliceville by train on June 2, 1943. Locals turned out to gawk.

Instead of seeing a “super race” they saw malnourished, bedraggled, and disheveled men in worn out uniforms. They were marched two miles to the 400-acre barb wire enclosure. Still, many thought they were going to be shot.

Instead, mess halls were opened and they were fed.

It was their first time to eat peanut butter. They squeezed white bread into a blob (Germans ate brown bread) and rubbed on peanut butter. They liked it. Who doesn’t like a peanut butter sandwich?

Over the years, many of the POWs returned to Aliceville bringing with them memorabilia, now on display. They also told many stories. Food was rationed during WWII and the POWs often ate better than the locals.

(See Alabama Heritage, Winter 1988, No. 7 for an in-depth account of the POWs.) Corn was plentiful in the area and it was fed to the POWs. In their mind this was an insult, since in Germany, corn was fed to hogs. They didn’t want to eat it, yet they didn’t want to offend their captors. They hatched a plan. They bur-

ied the corn in numerous places to conceal it. Corn began sprouting up all over the compound. The locals thought they liked corn so much they were planting their own crop.

They sent more corn!

Many of the POWs picked cotton, gathered peanuts, and worked in sawmills for which they were paid. The officers and NCO weren’t required to work pursuant to the Geneva Convention. All lived well.

However, two POWs were shot and killed while trying to escape.

The POWs organized an orchestra, produced plays and concerts, wrote poetry, painted and promoted the arts, and pretty much lead a good life, except for being away from home. The museum is also chock-full of American military memorabilia, including a display of Pickens County’s two Medal of Honor recipients. There is also a large display of 1920s clothing.

Following our excellent tour, we lunched at Angie’s Place on pulled pork, smoked chicken, and fried catfish. Fine eating. A meat and three with a drink was $11.00.

Ways to Douse the Gaslighter’s Flame

- Don Henley In my last article, I shared information with you about the troubling “technique” of gaslighting. If you recall, I explained that gaslighting occurs when the abuser attempts to convince the victim that he or she is “crazy.” The gaslighter establishes a pattern of undermining behavior so that the victim questions his or her perception of reality. Their manipulation works because they often appear friendly, loving, and concerned. As a victim, it’s hard to believe that someone who cares for you would purposefully and over time try to hurt you. As talented and experienced manipulators, gaslighters often use language to twist any problem into being your fault, or accuse you of being too sensitive. Their words are usually accompanied by non-verbal flippant behaviors, such as rolling of the eyes, sighing, or looking in disbelief, implying you are irrational or uninformed. It is the intermittent expressions of caring that can throw you into confusion.

Gaslighters present with a persistent pattern of behavior, so damaging, gradual, and deceptive that you don’t even realize what is happening. And then you arrive at a crisis or breaking point. Make no mistake, gaslighting is not about love or concern. It’s about

power, control, manipulation, and superiority.

So let’s take a look at how you can snuff out that gaslighter in your life. As we say in the counseling world, awareness is the first step. Take a step back from what has been going on and really look at whether there is a pattern of undermining behavior.

In my opinion, gaslighting is only effective when you haven’t clued in to what is going on. Once you start noticing the pattern, it will not be able to affect you as much. For example, you may begin to tell yourself, “Here we go again, “and wave it off. If you can keep in mind that the gaslighting isn’t about you, it’s about the need for control and power, you will be able to see the gaslighter as insecure and weak. Almost all gaslighters believe they have to have the upper hand. They have few other coping skills or ways to mediate conflict or differences. This absolutely does not excuse the behavior, but knowing this may help you to take the manipulation less personally. It is also at this point when you can recognize that you will need to decide whether to maintain this relationship. The most important statement in this article is: Be aware that it is highly unlikely that you will be able to change the gaslighter.

The gaslighter has usually spent a lifetime honing the skills necessary to manage the world and the people in it. The controlling behaviors being used are all

they know, and as far as they know, they’re working for them.

The time may come when you need to rethink the worth of the relationship.

Can you continue to put up with the constant attempts to chip away at your self-esteem? If the gaslighter is a boss or supervisor, you may want to start looking for another job. If the gaslighter is a friend, family member, or co-worker, you might need to consider putting some distance between you. If the gaslighter is your partner or significant other, and you have decided to preserve the relationship, you probably need to commit to couples counseling.

You will unquestionably require a support system.

You need other people in your life to confirm your worth and your reality.

late their victims in order to stay in control. They even go as far as to repeatedly tell their victims that they (the gaslighter) are the only person who really loves and understands them. Please, if you are in this type of situation, don’t believe their lines/lies.

Spend time with friends and family, and verify your perceptions by talking to them, especially if they have witnessed what the gaslighter is calling into question.

It is so important to work on rebuilding your selfesteem. You are a loveable and capable person no matter what the gaslighter tells you. There are numerous self-help books that can guide you to love yourself and affirm your self-worth. You can regain your perspective by reminding yourself of the times in your life

when you felt grounded and good about yourself.

You might even want to keep a private journal to document events that the gaslighter may call into question. You may decide that you need professional help. Those who have been “beat up” for many years lose confidence in their own thoughts and emotions; double-checking their realities. This leads to depressive feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. A mental health counselor can help you to dig your way back out of the effects of gaslighting.

Balancing Act

by Roy Williams One could say that your entire life is a balancing act. To make it through a day in our lives, it is necessary for us to balance our time, our water, nutrient intake, work and rest.

When it comes to developing good relationships, we find it necessary to balance the time we spend with those we care about, our moods, the tone of our voice, and, of course, our compassion for them and their interests. Working effectively with others demands that we treat others the way we would like to be treated. Sound familiar?

In order to be successful in any area of life requires balance. The amount of time we dedicate to work compared to the amount of time we play and how much we spend on our recreational time is also an important part of the balancing act.

But when it comes to your health, the most important balancing act is found in your ability to balance what goes into our bodies. Your health is totally dependent on homeostasis, which is the state of steady internal physical and chemical conditions maintained by living systems.

The state of equilibrium is the condition of optimal functioning for the organism and includes many variables, such as body temperature, nutrient absorption, hormone release, and fluid retention. If any of these go out of balance, your body will let you know by giving you signs, which can include, weight gain or loss, mood swings, irregular cycles, food cravings, digestive issues, depression, anxiety, irritability, low sexual desire, poor circulation, sugar imbalances, chronic infections, and even sleep disorders.

In fact, almost all diseases, including aging, can be tied to imbalances.

When your body is balanced, there is almost nothing that it cannot overcome. Even cancer has trouble living in a pH balanced body. With proper nutrition your body can heal. Stop freeradical damage, decrease inflammation, and stay hydrated to avoid accelerated aging. Balance the hormones and you can restore the lines of communication that maintain balance.
