In 1961, when I was eight years old, my vision went south quickly, and I found myself often walking up to the oldstyle blackboard in Miss Anderson’s third grade class in order to see what she had written. At first, I got in trouble for getting out of my seat without permission, but then Miss Anderson realized that I was compensating for a lack of vision, wrote my parents about the prospect of getting my vision checked, and soon I was off to the optometrist. In 1961, things were different when it came to eyeglass frames for girls. There were not racks and racks of potential choices; basically you could get the pink pointy motherof-pearl frames, or you could get the blue ones.

I decided to have the blues. Either way, you looked lame, and you just learned to live with it. What made it even tougher was that my optometrist, Dr. Krueger, wanted to try something that no one was doing, and that was making third graders wear bi-focals. Bi-focals! Clearly I am scarred for life.

What does this analogy have to do with 2020?

Several things. The first is that humans were made to see clearly, and will do just about anything in order to see well, including looking lame by eight-year-old

standards. So, my question to you in this early part of what is bound to be a momentous year as well as decade is this: What are you willing to do in order to “see” clearly? Mind you, there is no shame in needing help with seeing, and I suppose there is a certain badge of honor in adapting to bi-focals as a kid in order to be able to do so, but if your vision for your life has gone fuzzy, it’s time to do something about it.

The second is that you have to narrow down your choices when it comes to “choosing your frame.” I didn’t have that problem back in 1961; it was either pink or blue, shiny and stupid-looking. That part of the process was over quickly, and I didn’t get the chance to obsess over how I looked.

Today we are overwhelmed by too many choices in every arena of life—food, clothes, churches, books, media, cars, channels, classes, degrees, investments, relationships, travel, and, yes, frames for our spectacles. Streamline and only let in the things that work and the things that are true.

The third is, according to the One who loves you the most, not bothering to have clear vision can be fatal. “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” Most often this

quote from Proverbs is used to remind people to take the time to set goals, set time frames for meeting those goals, and break things down into small steps so as to avoid feeling overwhelmed. That is all well and good, but sadly, what happens often is that the second part of that Proverb is ignored.

It says, “But he that keeps the law, happy is he.” Wait, what? You mean this is not all about self-realization and navel-gazing? Nope, there is a hitch, and that hitch is designed to make you happy and keep you safe. We know that we

cannot keep the law in our own strength. There is only One who ever succeeded in doing that.

But if we are willing to humble ourselves, even if it means looking lame for the rest of our lives in order to “see,” in the long run, we will be happy. With that in mind, dear readers, Happy New Year, and may you have clear, 20/20 vision!

Thoughts On The Current Embassy Escapades

There is something that seems to be commonplace with people who have been in a combat zone—a strange affection for the place and the people, even if it was horrific, and years later you are still so glad to be at home on American soil. In my case, my years in Iraq were wonderful as well as difficult, but thankfully never horrific, and when the US Embassy in Baghdad was attacked earlier this week, that old feeling of wanting to be there “like, yesterday” came roaring back.

I texted my friend CW4 (Ret) Stephen Conway, who flew Chinooks and Apaches while I was in Baghdad, and he felt the same way. I queried him by way of text, “You’d be willing to trade your Chinook for an Apache gunship?” His reply was, “You better believe it!!!

All sentimentality aside, my first thought was how very glad I was that this did not turn into an incident that was reminiscent of Tehran in 1979 or Benghazi in 2012.

And while I want my focus to be on how quickly and well the Marines responded, I do think it is noteworthy that the White House is occupied by a Commander-in-Chief who is solidly behind our soldiers, no matter where they are, and did not hold back on sending help immediately when it was needed. Thank you, Mr. President!

In this day of nearly realtime ability to watch what is going on, I was particularly impressed by several things. The first was the calm demeanor of the Marines posted on the rooftops of the Embassy.

All kinds of mess and

vandalism were going on down in the outer courtyard, but it would have been a mistake to engage, and they stayed cool. The second was that the real issue, as far as Hezbollah was concerned, was front and center. No attempt was made to hide Hezbollah’s hatred for the U.S. And, let us not forget that one of the reasons Hezbollah hates the U.S. is because the U.S. is an ally of Israel. Here are some of the tags spray-painted on the walls by the protestors: --"This embassy has been given to Palestine" is my current favorite bit of graffiti.

Newsflash: Baghdad is not anywhere near Palestine, guys, but that is definitely where Hezbollah lives. And please remember that part of Hezbollah’s foundational premise is that Jews

are blasphemers and are damned for all time and throughout history, and destruction of Israel will bring about the "reappearance of the Imam.”

(The Mahdi or Islamic Messiah) The protestors/ militia are openly being backed by Iran, and the impressive as well as reasonable responses on the part of our leadership will be discussed below.

-- "America is an aggressor & must leave the region quickly" If we do that, Iran will step up to de-stabilize the region, and the Marines will be doing more than defending the Embassy.

-- "This was never an embassy but a den of terrorists & spies" said Hezbollah. Lovin’ the irony…

SecDef Mark T Esper said, “We have taken appropriate force protection actions to ensure the safety of American citizens, military personnel and diplomats in country, and to ensure our right of selfdefense. We are sending additional forces to support our personnel at the Embassy.” Buhbye, Benghazi. No one is absurdly implying something along the lines that the attack came about as the result of a homemade video, and no one is hanging the Embassy staff or defenders out to dry. Hallelujah. All souls are safe.

tack that killed an American citizen and wounded American and Iraqi soldiers. Now, Iranian backed groups are threatening our Embassy in Baghdad. Yep, that pretty much says it all. It was a defensive action.

POTUS: "Iran killed an American contractor, wounding many. We strongly responded, and always will…" "…Now Iran is orchestrating an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Iraq. They will be held fully responsible. In addition, we expect Iraq to use its forces to protect the Embassy, and so notified!"

In a way, the third statement is the most impressive to me of all. The understanding all over the globe for all embassies of all nations is that the host country is responsible for protecting the diplomatic corps in each embassy. I am glad that the president is taking that stand, rather than something like, “Oh, that’s ok, we’re the strong ones; you don’t have to do your job and help keep Iran out of your country, even though they have been your sworn enemies for decades.”

Of course, the non-lethal “fireworks” coming out of the Apaches were a beautiful show of force, but the best part of all is that the Embassy is still functioning, no one was hurt, and the message is clear: “We will leave when IRAQ says they want us to, not IRAN.” May God bless the Leathernecks, and those who lead them.

The Houston Memorial Library And Museum: Restored To More Than Its Former Glory

by Ali Elizabeth Turner One of the last things the late Athens City Councilman Jimmy Wayne Gill was able to do before cancer took him from office was present what I am told was a hilarious improv stand-up comedy piece to the City Council about the need for the Houston Memorial Library to be restored. This was because, according to Gill, all that was holding it together were termites holding hands, and something needed to be done before the whole thing fell down. Now, while that may have been a bit of an exaggeration, the two-story wooden home of the former Governor of the State of Alabama George S. Houston was in great need of some extensive TLC, and Jimmy and the rest of the council could see that it had great value for the people of Athens-Limestone County. So they set out to repair and restore the Houston house, and it reopened a year ago.

There is nothing like a remodel and restoration project to try men’s souls, and this was no exception. The desire was to preserve an important piece of local history and make it compliant with modern standards. The deeper they dug, the more they realized they needed to do.

How do you keep the original woodwork and make room for safe electrical wiring? What are your responsibilities to be accessible to those with disabilities? And, how do you go after and re-

trieve the things that have “grown legs and walked� over the years, including books, a bedroom suite, silver, and more?

These challenges and more were faced by the crew, paid and volunteer, and they prevailed, although the bedroom suite is still MIA. The house was built on land that had been purchased in 1818, before Alabama became a state in 1819, but the date of construction is thought to have been some time in the 1830s. Governor George Houston lived in ton Memorial Library and Museum has been preserved for that purpose.

I am grateful to have the chance to go sit in the window seat on the east side of the house and imagine the Houston children who lived there, and thousands of others before me doing the same thing: curling up with a great book. And, I would like to invite you to do so as well.

What Makes Ronnie Roll

Go Vertical

For several years, we have done a “look-backRonnie look-ahead” for the first edition of the New Year, and that was what was originally planned. However, while there were several things about which to celebrate having happened in 2019, as well as those to be excited about in 2020, Mayor Marks’ “vibe” was a bit more introspective, and not attached to a time stamp. Adam Smith of the Athens News Courier had just published a piece about Mayor Ronnie in their publication, Limestone Life, and he had done an excellent job capturing the essence of the mayor’s soul—the challenges and triumphs being faced down by our 75-year-old “elected shepherd” of this great town.

Most famous for having the energy of a man many years his junior, Mayor Ronnie had prayerfully considered running again for election, and with his family’s blessing has decided to do so. He has a few months before election season is in full swing, with all the not-sofun side of politics waiting for him in the wings.

So, he was wishing to use

this time to prepare well for what’s ahead while keeping a careful watch over the city as we go through this unprecedented growth spurt.

“You’ve got to set aside time to breathe,” said the mayor. “You can’t wait until you get the ‘knock on the door’ to ‘go vertical.’” What he meant by that is that these are extraordinarily trying times, and your vertical relationship needs to be vibrant before you get difficult news, a life-altering diag-

nosis, or experience a financial reversal. He then put it another way: “Call a timeout.”

“Timeouts” are not just being sent to the corner when you have misbehaved as a child or a lastsecond strategy session in a championship game; they are planned periods of rest and a change of pace that appear in every culture and belief system. Famed personal development figure Stephen Covey used the term “sharpening your saw”

to indicate the need to carefully hone the edges of your blade before you go back to felling a tree.

Such activity is not a luxury; it is a necessity if a person is going to be effective.

“All the new industry is important,” said the mayor, and then asked, “But what have we done to take care of ourselves and each other?” He had been out and about in town, and had observed people who had never been to Athens before

falling in love with our town. They were shopping, which was nice, but that isn’t what “makes Athens Athens.” “We have such a high level of energy in our town. We have so many opportunities for people to serve; Full Tummy Project, RSVP, Limestone County Churches Involved, Rotary Club -- we have to make sure we never take these things for granted.”

2020 is going to be one of change -- the new Rec center is due to open, Toyota-Mazda is coming along, Pilgrim’s Pride is poised for its next phase, but what was apparent was that the mayor is fully aware that “going vertical” is the only thing that will make things work well. So, we prayed, asked for a ton of wisdom, and then it was time for Ronnie to roll.

Slinkard On Success

All That I Need Is Jesus

Enough of the hype. It is now time to perform, in the year 2020. I believe the correct statement, or maybe the fitting statement, would be it is time to put up or shut up. I understand this may be a more in-your-face approach that many people are not accustomed to, but we need to be honest.

We have grown weak as a society. We are now more worried about who is going to get offended than we are concerned with telling people the truth.

Why is it we want to walk around telling people lies? Why? I cannot fathom the thought process of the world around us. We live in the greatest nation known to man, yet we live in a society that is utterly confused about various topics.

The times have changed.

Just look at the filth that is entering the homes of Americans across the nation through the television set. The days of The Andy Griffith Show, Green Acres, Leave It To Beaver -- they are long gone; and we now, as a society, have replaced these wholesome television programs with the likes of the Kardashians.

success in life, but the truth of the matter is most people want success as long as they do not have to do anything tough or difficult. It has been said that the only time success will come before work is in the dictionary; yet we have a society that is looking for the get-richquick scheme.

I have met many people who if they worked as hard at finding a job as they do at not finding a job, they could be millionaires. Again, the society we live in has changed and our thinking is all wrong. We want to think about life in terms of what we can get out of it and what is in it for us when we need to live a focused life on pleasing Jesus Christ.

People want to know

where my success comes in life. Jesus Christ. Do I sound like a zealot?

What is wrong with being on fire for Christ?

After all, we, mankind, are made in His image to glorify God. Every day is a struggle but let me ask you, what efforts are you making? We have gotten in trouble as a society because we too often want to focus on getting the praises of others, but we really need to turn that focus towards Jesus Christ.

The title of this column is “Slinkard on Success” and honestly, the way I feel here lately, maybe the name should become “Slinkard on Salvation.”

There was a point in time in which I did worry about the toys in life; I worried about the Benjamins; I

worried about the materialistic things and I would write about these things. But my heart has changed over time when it comes to this column.

I am very thankful for Ali Turner and her giving me the ability to spread the Gospel through this article. I am also appreciative of you, the reader, who responds back to me and gives me the encouragement I need.

We live in some dark times, and it only seems it is getting darker and darker. People talk about world peace, togetherness, and harmony; but even though they all sound good, what we really need is to come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. I am amazed how God has provided for me and my family throughout 2019, and I

know God will continue to amaze me in 2020.

We do not know how long we have on this earth, but I do know we need to take advantage of every moment we have.

I was thinking about my girls during Christmas, and it saddened me as I only have just a handful more Christmases with them as teenagers. Before long, they will be all grown and be their own adult. In 2020, I urge you to put your focus on growing closer to the Lord and allow Him to move in your life so you can bring honor and glory to Christ. During the year if you get discouraged, just think about Philippian’s 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”

Our society has escalated out of control. There would have been a time I would have used the word “spiraled,” but this would not be appropriate for the world we live in. Yet many Christians stand by doing nothing.

Happy New Year To One And All

It’s amazing how fast 2019 went by, and we are looking at a brand new year full of possibilities and opportunities. The community has seen and experienced a lot of growth – with more coming in 2020. We had new schools opened in our communities. We had new restaurants and shops opened in our communities. We had grand announcements of things to come. We saw amazing educational opportunities begin in our community that will benefit our citizens and the world beyond. We are on the cusp of great change in 2020 in Athens-Limestone… and many of our citizens are benefiting.

In 2019, our communities came together. We cried together. We laughed together. We cheered together. We mourned together. We became stronger together as we lifted each other up – recognizing we are only as strong as our smallest and weakest citizen.

Our community rallied to stuff the trucks for LCCI, fill the backpacks for Full Tummy, fill the packages for Hearts for Homeless, adopt and foster animals from our local shelters as they became overwhelmed, and help so many more community organizations that needed a hand and held special events – and you.

2019 was a whirlwind year for Athens-Limestone County Tourism with visitors from all over the world, including

the return of the International Friendship Ambassadors of Japan after a 35 year hiatus, the return of the annual Indian Student Educational visit, clan representatives from our Twinning City – Stonehaven, Scotland, and the return of the Airstreams for the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention.

We’ve welcomed new community members, industries, and tourism partners to Athens-Limestone; assisted potential relocating families discover the best our community has to offer; and continued to help everyone discover Athens-Limestone as, “We’re what you LOVE about the SOUTH!” January is a little lean on events but we’re adding them to the calendar at VisitAthensAL.com/ events as fast as we can.

Our 2020 Vision

Here we are welcoming in the new year. Another fresh start. Everyone is hoping that this year will be THE year.

The one with happiness and good fortune, good health, and prosperity.

We can’t predict the future or what this year will bring, but we can have a vision for what we hope to accomplish.

At KALB we know that 2020 will bring with it many opportunities and a few changes to navigate. Those changes will not catch us off guard because we have a plan and a vision in place.

It is our hope to encourage as many as possible to participate in our Great American Cleanup activities: The Elk and Tennessee River Cleanups and the county-wide Trash Attack taking place on Saturday, March 14, and the #OneBagChallenge which will run from March 14 through April 25.

We want these events to have record participation because we know that once a person has seen up close what is in our waterways, ditches, and roadsides, they will most likely never litter.

We hope they will also be more likely to teach those around them to take greater responsibility for the appearance and health of our community.

KALB will also be doing more to advertise our Litter Hotline. We need all of you who care about Athens and Limestone County to report litterbugs. We need to let our neighbors and visitors know that we are watching and we don’t appreciate anyone trashing our beautiful city. Littering includes trash and cigarette butts being tossed from vehicles or trash and debris flying from uncovered or poorly secured loads.

This is a simple way any individual can make a difference. We encourage you to do your part.

Welcome To The New You!

Happy New Year! Happy New Decade! Happy New You! This time of year, everyone seems to be focused on changing the things in their lives that need to be “fixed.”

For me, I made a change last year. I decided that I was going to commit to be healthier. I had made this decision many times in the past, too many to count. But it was different this time, it was easier for some reason. You see, I just didn’t just change my eating habits, I changed my entire mindset.

I decided to dive into the deep end and cut out as many carbs from my diet as possible. I saw the doctor at the end of January 2019. I was heavier than I had ever been in my life. I knew if I didn’t make a change in my life, I might not make it much longer. Since then, I have lost 70lbs! I have never lost that much weight in my life and the pounds keep dropping off. I feel great!

Over the holidays, I have allowed myself to indulge, and I

can feel the effects. I am ready to go back to a healthier way of eating. Since I have been eating healthier, my body feels the effects of poor food choices now. I am able to recognize what putting good things into your body can make you feel like. Bring it on January. I hope to continue the downward trend on the scale.

To start this month, I am making a salad that tastes just like one of my favorite fast food treats. I’m sure most of you have had a delicious burger from a fast food restaurant that has two all-beef patties and a special sauce. Well, if you are like me, it’s all about that sauce! This salad takes everything you love about that hamburger but kicks the sugar and bread to the curb. So, enjoy your favorite burger, just in a better-for-you form.

Healthy Mac Salad Ingredients:

Sauce: ¾ cup mayonnaise 4 tsp mustard 2 Tbsp dill pickle, chopped 1 Tbsp onion, chopped 1 Tbsp white vinegar 2 pks Splenda ½ tsp paprika

Salad: 1 lb. lean ground beef 4 cups iceberg lettuce, chopped ½ cup onions, sliced 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese ¼ cup dill pickles, chopped

Directions:

Make the dressing. Mix all ingredients well. Chill while you get the salad ready.

Cook ground beef until done, add salt and pepper to taste.

Mix lettuce, onions, pickles, and cheese together. Top salad with ground beef and drizzle with salad dressing.

The dressing will keep for a week in your refrigerator. It also tastes great on grilled chicken or as a dip for veggies.

Four Books To Start Your New Year

Over the past year I have had the pleasure of reading my heart out. I specifically focused on non-fictional analysis and Biblical commentary that strengthened my critical thinking capabilities concerning the Judeo-Christian basis for American thought. The moral origin for ‘how’ and ‘why’ the Founding Fathers came to the conclusions they did were largely the result of a deep understanding of history and Biblical rationality. Now, how these rationales can be used to solidify an individual’s identity with the Judeo-Christian framework will be explained in the last book I will present to you.

Let us start at the very beginning. Radio personality and political commentator Dennis Prager began what he is considering his “magnum opus.” Mr. Prager has started on a journey of completing a full commentary of the first five book of the Bible (The Torah), and titled it, The Rational Bible.

Dennis decided to release his work regarding the book of Exodus first. His justification was that the law given to the nation of Israel is originally housed here, and it would serve as a foundational explanation of the nature of God for the rest of the commentary. Mr. Prager goes verse by verse to expound on the his-

tator Ben Shapiro’s The Right Side of History: How Reason and Moral Purpose Made the West Great. Mr. Shapiro also has considered this book as one of, if not the best works he has written. Ben builds a case for the need to understand and fulfill one’s purpose in order to connect with our neighbors while torical and modern application of the each citation. He also includes essays where he can interject his experiences and additional knowledge concerning a particular subject in the text. Genesis was published second. It serves as an introduction to the approach God took to reveal Himself to mankind, and how God shaped a nation with flawed devotees. Dennis reiterates the authenticity and reason throughout the text due to the unabashed showcasing of weaknesses and divine discipline presented within each story. Both books are highly recommended, and I am anxiously awaiting the release of the other three volumes. The Rational Bible is an engaging, thought-provoking, and streamlined observation of Jewish belief and ancient expressions of morality and reason.

These four books have allowed me to organize my thoughts and beliefs in a way that address the many facets that have influenced me. If you are looking to explore the depths of ‘why’ you may think the way you do, and learn classical humanities which have been rigorously attacked by modern academia for the last two decades, you need look no further.

Happy New Year To Limestone County From Collin Daly, Commission Chairman

Chairman Daly is quick to say that he is not a politician, he is a public servant, and it’s important to him that Limestone County residents know that his intention when he put his hand on the Bible was and still is to serve everyone.

“Regardless of your background, my job is to serve you.” “And”, he added, “What’s best for Limestone County should not be based on partisan politics.

Many people think that the County Commissioners are “the road guys,” and while that’s true, they do so much more. Collin enjoys working closely with the City of Athens, surrounding communities, as well as the State of Alabama, and has a personal desire to see to it that Limestone County is the best county in the State. “We are grow-

ing so fast, and we need to grow well,” he said.

After work, when Collin hits the hay each night, he always asks himself, “Was this the best decision?” He then

emphasized, “The best decision” means what is best for the citizens of Limestone County.

that he has met so many people and made friends that he expects will still be friends long after he leaves office. He also told me, “This job has made me appreciate my family more than ever.

I don’t take anything or anyone for granted, and because I don’t get to see them as much as I used to, our family time together means so much more.” He then added, “I especially want to thank my wife and kids for their support this year.”

It is the practice of most local leaders to make sure that they get some time to think and pray, and for Commissioner Daly, it’s when he’s out and about on the roads of Limestone County in his

truck. That’s when he thinks things through, comes up with ideas to solve problems, and get creative. Collin comes from a family that taught him that public service is their calling in life, no matter whether or not they have a title. His dad, Gary Daly served in law enforcement, and was Limestone County Commissioner as well.

Because Collin has never had a desire to be a career politician, he told me, “In three years I will have a job evaluation, not an election, and if people think I did a good job, they’ll re-hire me. It has been my honor to be a public servant, no matter what they decide.”

He mentioned that part-time census workers can make between $16-18 an hour, and he hopes that everyone who needs extra work will be a part of that process so that the census is as accurate as possible. Again, I asked him what he would do to help that be the case if he could, and he said, “Come up with a 20-year master plan that involves all the small surrounding communities, and have a full-time planner.”

Before we finished up, he asked me to please make sure that the county crew knows how much they are appreciated for all their hard work this past year, and that he’s looking forward to 2020. “Happy New Year,” he told me, and then he had to head to West Limestone for his last appointment of the decade.

Dog Barker

Winter Is Still Here, Folks!

As we venture into 2020, we all need to remember winter is far from over.

Yes, Alabama tends to get warm during the winter months, but just as quick can change. I remember as a child my family and I stayed warm during the winter by cutting firewood, using a fire place, and the family dog would curl up in our beds to keep warm.

Some folks out there still use these methods during winter, and it is always a bonus for the family dog to get to come in out of the weather. But, let us just address those of us who, no matter how cold it gets, will refuse to bring in their dog.

Those who do this should not even have a dog, in my opinion. I am always reminded of Proverbs 12:10, “A righteous man regar-

deth the life of his animal, but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.”

So, let’s talk about what we can do to get our Family Canine Member(s) ready for the winter days left. If anyone thinks like me and considers the needs of our short-haired dogs, I would go and buy them a sweatshirt just for them to stay warm. I did this for Zues because he never adapted well to the cold. He would wait for me to get his sweatshirt out, and he would place his head right into the shirt. The moment he got it on, he stopped shivering, LOL. If I keep one outside (which I refuse to do, but if I did) I would ensure that they had a shelter, well insulated, and off the ground.

I would even place some

hay in their shelter to keep the warmth in and the cold out. Igloo dog houses or prefabricated dog houses are not insulated. If someone purchases one for their dog, be aware of this.

Now, if anyone has the time and energy, another great shelter idea one can build for their dog outside is an underground den.

This can be a dug out hole and a huge PVC pipe covered in the ground. Ensure there are breathing holes or tubes installed into the roof of the underground den. We must remember that dogs were natural den animals before man domesticated them, or so I was taught to believe and have read. I will add this, underground shelters tend to stay 70 degrees year round, so there

is a benefit against the hot weather. These shelters can be built out of wood also but unless treated, wood can rot over time. There is also concrete, but be careful because concrete can stay really cold during winter.

Another idea that works is an electric blanket. There is always a down side to this idea though; if the dog is a chewer, well we know what will happen to “Sparky,” so this may not be a good idea…and what if the power goes off?

One last idea that I would only use this in an emergency; let’s just pretend for a moment that there is a severe winter storm coming, and there is no shelter for your dog. A quick fix for this is hay bales. Stack

them and build a complete shelter out of this material.

It will act as a natural insulation against the cold and can be a great temporary fix for the situation.

This can keep everyone warm should the need arise where the power fails. We should all have a plan for an emergency, even for our fur-babies.

“Remember to love your dogs because they love you. Maybe not the way you want them to, like chewing up your favorite shoes or what not, but that is just love chewing. Be thankful for the time you have with them always.”

The Stalker

- William Shakespeare January is Stalking Awareness Month. I know, I know.

I’m starting the year off on a difficult and unpleasant topic, and yet stalking is a problem of alarmingly increasing numbers. Roughly 1 in 6 women and 1 in 19 men in the United States have experienced stalking victimization at some point during their lifetime. In this article, I will address the stalker… stalking and mental illness and the types of stalking.

My next article will focus on the victims…the effects on mental, physical, and social health and how to seek help. While many stalkers do not suffer from a mental illness, mental disorders are common among stalkers whose behaviors attract attention from the criminal justice system and the mental health community. In other words, we only have statistics on those who have been identified as stalkers in the legal and behavioral health populations, realizing that many stalkers are never reported. The research suggests that about half of the stalkers “in the system” experience some sort of mental disorder, with the most common conditions being schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, personality disorders, depression, and substance abuse.

Stalking is a behavior, not a mental illness. While men-

tal illness does play a role in stalking, its contributions vary greatly depending on the nature of the symptoms experienced, the context of the experience, and the role of other personal and environmental factors. Given the complex nature of mental illness, it is helpful to identify how mental disorders interact with stalking behaviors. In a small number of (reported) stalking cases, the behavior occurs as a direct result of psychotic symptoms, usually in the form of paranoid or delusional beliefs about the victim. In these cases, the stalking behavior is likely to resolve if the disorder underlying the behavior is successfully treated. Medication and psychotherapy may take time to come into effect but can help to manage the psychosis. For a larger number of stalkers, a mental illness other than schizophrenia is present and contributes to the onset and maintenance of the stalking behavior; however, the relationship is indirect or complicated by other factors. In these cases, treatment of the mental illness alone is usually unlikely to stop the predatory behaviors. Behavioral health interventions may provide alternative positive actions and coping strategies. The remainder of stalkers who do not suffer from a mental illness, might hold particular attitudes and beliefs that contribute to stalking patterns. These people, when confronted with the desire to change their interpersonal situations, use stalking as a strategy rather than a more socially appro-

priate behavior.

Let’s take a look at the types of stalking. While many stalking cases appear similar and involve the same kinds of behaviors, the reasons that people engage in stalking are complex and varied.

One typology breaks stalking down into the type of prior relationship the victim had with the stalker. Stalkers are classified as ex-intimate (former sexual partner), an acquaintance (friends or family), or a stranger.

This relationship-based categorization can be a useful starting point for thinking about the kinds of risks and management strategies that might be helpful in a stalking situation. Research shows that ex-intimates are far more likely to be violent than other types of stalkers.

A slightly more complex typology divides stalkers into five types, placing greater emphasis on the context in which the stalking arose and

the stalker’s initial motivation. These categories then include the nature of the prior relationship, and the role of mental illness in motivating the stalking behaviors.

The demand of holiday spending can lead to worry of unpaid credit card bills, which can lead many to put themselves on a strict "money diet." As you reflect on the past year and the goals you want to set for yourself, you may want to put financial wellness at the top of your list of resolutions.
