Why We Should Fight For The Students of Williamson County, TN Only about an hour away from us, a battle is boiling in Williamson County, TN, that has gained national attention. It has to do with the use of a public school textbook that is full of anti-Semitic, anti-Christian, anti-American nonsense.

It ranges from being innuendo clear to disinformation. Thankfully, Laurie Cardoza-Moore, a woman whom I have come to respect greatly, is not letting this go away, and her hard work, and that of her organization, Proclaiming Justice To The Nations, is paying off. Below is part of a press release that came out from PJTN this week bringing the latest update: “A concerned parent of Williamson County has met the July 23 deadline to appeal the decision of the special committee formed to review the controversial textbook at the center of an ongoing debate that has reached national media attention.

Following review by a special five member Ad Hoc Committee and their decision to retain the textbooks for use in the 2013-2014 school year, the book’s publisher, Pearson Publishers

in a surprise development communicated to parents through Williamson County’s School Board Attorney, agreed to remove a highly publicized, controversial passage on terrorism in all future printings and electronic versions of the 10th and 11th editions of book in question: The Cultural Landscape: An Introduc-

Textbooks that include egregious errors, glaring omissions, questionable inclusions or political, ethnic, cultural and other biases that clearly appear to diminish the Judeo-Christian values that are the basis of our Constitution, the rule of law, the Bill of Rights, and in essence, the cornerstone of our way of life in America. Concerned citizens and parents in Florida have been dealing with the issue for several years including a two-year campaign to document the number of textbooks in which these distortions of truth and fact are commonly found, and have documented them.”

The reason we need to stay on top of this is that number one, it’s happening in places that are consistently thought of as being conservative, and, more importantly, it’s just the right thing to do. In a word, we could be next, as unlikely as that may seem, and we have a responsibility to overturn the “bloodless revolution.”

Protecting The Chaplaincy, Part 2, “Non-Chaplain Chaplains?”

by Ali Elizabeth Turner In the July 19th edition of Athens Now, with reluctance, I dragged you into the Theatre of the Absurd by discussing the proposed DOD gag order that would prohibit military chaplains from ministering from a position that one set of religious beliefs may just be superior to another. That was bad enough, and this time I feel like I am buying season tickets to said Theatre for all of Athens by giving space to something that can only be described as an example of “professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.” I apologize in advance for having to subject you to this, but we must be “watchmen on the wall” for the religious freedoms of our soldiers as well as our own.

If two House Democrats by the names of Rob Andrews of New Jersey, and Jared Polis of Colorado got their wish, the recently debated Defense bill would make the way for a new category of chaplains: “non-theist chaplains.” Said another way, they would be “non-chaplain chaplains.”

Oy! Let’s play with this for a minute. The very word chaplain is from the 14th

century French word, “chapelein,” and one of its definitions is: “a clergyman attached to a branch of the military.”

And, it so happens that the word clergy, which is also French, is defined as (1.) “a group ordained to perform pastoral or sacerdotal (priestly) functions in a Christian church,” and (2.) “the official or sacerdotal class of a non-Christian religion.” Folks, the operative word here is “religion.”

All chaplains of the United States military wear a patch on their uniform that signifies that they are chaplains. If they are Christian, there is a cross.

If they are Jewish, there is a star of David., If they are Muslim, there is a crescent. If they are Buddhist, there is a dharma wheel.

What would non-chaplain chaplains wear, an “international NO” sign?

Additionally, military chaplains have to have a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, followed by a master’s in theological studies. The very word “theological” means “the

study of the Word of God.” Speaking for self, I don’t believe that the Koran is the word of God, but one thing it is not, and that is the study of no one. According to the USN statement of the requirements and duties of a chaplain, one must be able to offer “counsel, guidance, moral support and worship opportunities.” Last I checked, you can’t sing to, praise, worship, testify about, pray to, or preach for someone who isn’t there!

Recently at our home fellowship, I told my family of my intent to write about the non-chaplain

guy. Have a good time going nowhere, and won’t be seeing you, ever.” Now, there’s comfort for ya!

With their typical humor, they started in on various scenarios, including the one of the dying soldier mentioned in the July 19th Athens Now. They envisioned the non-chaplain chaplain kneeling beside the fatally wounded soldier before he breathed his last, and saying, “Bye,

The fact of the matter is that atheist soldiers go to chaplains for counsel all the time, even though there are psychologists available for counsel. Why? I am sure there are as many reasons as there are atheist soldiers, but I can tell you that one of my favorite chaplains in Iraq was the source of inspiration for a young Wiccan soldier.

Chaplain Behnken listened to him, he told him the truth as he believed it, he made the young man think, asked him questions, and most importantly, he loved him. Could a non-chaplain chaplain have loved the kid? Probably. But doesn’t a young soldier deserve more than leaning on and gleaning from a man or woman whose faith, at the end of the day, is only in themselves?

L’Maseran Dance: Meeting The Dance Needs Of Special Needs Youth

Francita Meaux has a story of tears and triumph, and her light is shining brightly in Athens, especially for kids who have Down’s syndrome, or are battling autism, Asperger’s or other physical challenges. “Miss Franci” is 66, and began dancing as a child, but not in the usual way, such as with lessons at the barre, recitals in tutus, or with supportive parents out in the audience.

Born in Louisville, she became a ward of the State of Kentucky at the age of four, living in a children’s home run by the Catholic Sisters of Charity. Around the age of ten, she was doing her chores as assigned by the nuns, and was cleaning the church.

She says of that experience, “While alone with God, [I] talked to Him about [my] life.

While in the sanctuary [I} began to dance only for Him as a form of prayer and praise.

This passion for dance is now expressed through the liturgical dance style of Le Maseran.” She told me she told no one about her experience that day in the chapel, because “she would have gotten in trouble.”

In between that first encounter with “the Lord of the dance,” and then becoming a dance teacher, she taught herself ballet and tap, largely by watching variety shows such as Ed Sullivan. She mimicked what she saw, and practiced hard, all by herself.

She married, had kids, and for a good while, the dancing part of her got shut down.

While working in the Baptist church, she found other ways to express her creativity in worship by doing Christmas plays and programs, and, blessedly, she finally had a pastor who backed her desire to bring what is explained be-

Her dance troupe visits churches, “and we do not perform, we present. We want all the glory to go to God, and invite the people to just worship Him.” They have made DVDs of their presentations, and as a result of the dancers visiting one church, a man by the name of Brian Passe wrote and published a book about Miss Franci’s life.

It is entitled Looking Beyond the Wall: Francita Meaux And Liturgical Dance.

Miss Franci’s passion for empowering and teaching praise and worship dance has found a unique place for special needs kids at The Dance Factory in Athens, located just down the street from Federal Mogul. “We want to fulfill a need for physical expression and physical education in the

Le Maseran classes are available for kids without special needs, too. Franci gives group and private lessons, and has a handpicked crew to help her with all her classes.

All classes are held at the Dance Factory, which is located at 1432 Freeman Ave in Athens, and registration is going to be held soon for the new Just For Me/Le Maseran classes, as well as the fall classes for the Dance Factory.

It is rare to have a dance program have worship as its focus, but I can assure you, the level of professionalism and love I have observed at Le Maseran would make me want to enroll my child, whether or not special needs were part of my decision.

A Southern Classic: The Crape Myrtle Festival And Beauty Pageant

Come to Ardmore for the 13th Annual Miss/ Master Crape Myrtle Festival Pageant on August 23rd at the Ardmore, Tennessee Annex. Competitions will begin at 5:00pm with subsequent divisions competing throughout the evening. The pageant is open to young ladies from birth through nineteen years of age, and young men from birth through five years of age. This pageant is NOT limited to residents of Ardmore.

There will be a $3 fee, per person, to attend the pageant.

The “Miss Crape Myrtle” and the “Miss Teen” Division winners will be presented during the Crape Myrtle Festival on August 31. The festival will offer unique arts and crafts, delicious festival food, live entertainment and of course, all varieties, sizes and colors of Crape Myrtles.

Live Country, Gospel, Bluegrass and Rock and Roll music can be enjoyed at the amphitheater. Bring your chairs or blankets and settle in for a wonderful day of music. The festival will be held at the Ardmore, TN, John Barnes Park, located on Ardmore Ridge Road.

First, think about the flower color and matured size. With so many varieties to select from, you should have no trouble finding the color you want in the size and shape that will fit your planting site.

By selecting a Crape Myrtle for the size of the space where it will grow, you will only need to do minor pruning. Be sure to remove small twiggy branches inside the plant to promote good air circulation.

However, do not prune Crape Myrtles in the fall or winter, since it compromises their cold hardiness.

Crape Myrtles bloom on the current season’s growth, so they can be pruned in the spring and will still flower normally throughout the summer. Crape Myrtles drink in the full summer sun and heat, so find a place that meets these requirements and you will be rewarded beyond your wildest dreams. After the plants are well established in the landscape, avoid excess watering and fertilization.

The Gift Of Community, Part 4: “The Five Elements”

by Ali Elizabeth Turner Gary McCaleb in his book, The Gift Of Community illustrates in detail the five resources or elements that help define a city and make it a community. They will be discussed briefly here, with the emphasis on the geography of Athens, and how it has made us what and who we are. The five elements are: geography, history, demographics, heritage and culture.

The geography of Athens Limestone makes for an interesting hub of interests, peoples, history, and commerce, and was radically altered when the TVA became a presence beginning in the mid1930s. The Elk and Tennessee Rivers were dammed, their courses changed, and in the ‘40s nuclear power began to change everything.

Several industries were born as a result.

Athens could be defined as many towns, actually.

It is a farming town, a

are courting us as manufacturing sites, and former farm land continues to become converted into housing developments.

The categories are all interconnected, and at times even blur.

For example, the U.G. White store was once a part of the geography in that it made it possible for farmers to alter theirs by selling farm implements, tools, and hardware. Now it’s part of the history, heritage and the culture, because someone took a risk, preserved it, added a restaurant, and made it into an icon in our town. railroad town, a college town, a manufacturing town, and although this would not be a popular perspective for most of us, an unwitting bedroom community of

Huntsville. It’s not quite a river town, but nearly, and, all of it has come together to make us what we are. Cotton may no longer be king, but it is a prince, and gins abound.

It is the understanding of how all the elements work together, and not compartmentalizing them that makes cities into communities. Mayor Ronnie had been reading McCaleb over this past

weekend when in Sunday School a study of the city state of Corinth, as well as Paul’s epistle drove home the fact that just as God gives gifts “severally as He wills” in order to make His body work, (hopefully in love,) so it is with cities.

An orchestra certainly has soloists, but without everyone making music and shining in their own right, there is either discord or silence.

Some of what makes our city a community is embracing technology in a way that is positive. The Mayor has the privilege of tooling around town in a Compressed Natural Gas powered Honda, and after going down to Decatur to view the arrival from Germany of a barge carrying a 160 ton radial press as part of the construction of the Carpenter Technology plant, on his way back he filled his tank with CNG at the station located at Elm and the Sportsplex.

“Ali, guess what it cost us,” he said with a twinkle in his eye. I didn’t have a clue, but my own jaw dropped when he told me, “Ten dollars and seventeen cents.”

A CNG car these days is one of the things that makes Ronnie roll over our geography, literally, while he helps make Athens a true community, one that is highly gifted and blessed.

Adam Clinard, owner of Complete Property Maintenance, LLC, found himself in a position that many professionals have shared as a result of the Great Recession: unemployed after many years in a successful career, and starting over in a completely unrelated field.

“Well, Kim knows how much I love to take care of property and do landscaping, so I took my tax return and bought a mower and a weed eater. I didn’t go into debt,” he added, which was something very important to him.

Adam got his licenses and insurance, “put out his shingle,” and he was off and running.

How Will The Curbside Change Affect Your Local Non-Profit Recycling Center? by Lynne Hart There were many reasons for the City of Athens to make the switch to the new curbside recycling system. We respect those reasons and the decisions that were made.

How can the community help?

The materials that bring in revenue will allow us to accept the items that do not produce much revenue such as glass, electronics, #3 through #7 plastics, batteries, and more. Because we are a non-profit facility, we are more interested in keeping as much

Easy Blackberry Cobbler

This is most likely the easiest cobbler recipe that I have ever come across!

Sweet and savory, this cobbler will have them coming back for more, and leave you with an easy clean up.

I am blessed to have access to a huge blackberry patch. It makes it easier to make a cobbler every other day for family and friends.

What you will need: 1 cup Bisquick 1 cup milk 1 & 1/2 cups sugar 2 cups berries 1/4 stick of real butter (cut in small pats) Mix together berries and 1/2 cup of sugar, set aside.

Spray 8x8 baking pan well with Bakers Joy, set aside.

Mix together well Bisquick, milk and remaining sugar.

Spread berries in baking pan, then top with Bisquick mixture, spread evenly. Place butter pats all over mixture.

Bake at 350F until golden brown, or until you can stick with a toothpick and it comes out clean.

Back To School For Me?

by Wanda Campbell We had our last summer camp, and it is nearly time to go back to school. We awarded nine girls a Super Sitter Course Certificate. In the course they spent two days with staff from Athens Limestone Hospital learning about ages and stages, basic first aid, and how to handle, diaper, and play with kids.

On Wednesday, they went to visit the 911 Center and

got lots of information about what happens when you call 911. Then, Jonathan Colwell helped the girls learn how to manage all the money they will make. On Thursday they found out how to build their arts and crafts kits and how to protect themselves with easy tumbles and pulls.

On Friday, they learned CPR and were awarded their certificates. It was a busy week, but lots of fun for the girls

and for our staff.

Now that camps are over, it is time to set new goals. Every year about this time I think about going back to school myself. I am not sure I need another degree, but I really like school. And getting the degree will open up opportunities. Truly, you cannot learn too much.

Of course, the best thing about going to school is – GOING TO SCHOOL. That means meeting new people, learning new things, opinionated discussions and reading lots of books. That may not sound like fun to you, but it sounds like the best day ever to me. Learning is a lifestyle after all.

Joint Pain Due To Osteoarthritis

The cartilage that cushions your joints can wear away over time. This condition is known as osteoarthritis.

Without this cartilage for cushioning, the bones of a joint will hurt when they rub against each other.

Frayed cartilage can’t heal or grow back. There’s no way to reverse the arthritis once it has started, but

there are ways to reduce the pain and protect the cartilage you still have.

Below are some suggestions to slow the damage and reduce the pain.

1. Lose weight if you are overweight. Every pound you lose takes 4 pounds of pressure off the knee.

You may actually slow the progress of arthritis if you

lose a significant amount of weight.

2. Do aerobic exercise.

Arthritis pain may make you reluctant to exercise, but being inactive makes the pain and stiffness worse.

3. Build strength. Focus on building up the muscles surrounding an arthritic joint. To improve symptoms in the knee, for example, strengthen the quadriceps muscles in the front of the thigh. A physical therapist or personal trainer can show you exercises that will help.

4. Stretch every day.

Stretching increases a joint’s range of motion.

5. Take over-the-counter pain relievers for flare ups. These include

Honestly Assessing Obama’s Legacy

In the last several weeks, we’ve had discussions about race, not heard since the ‘60’s. One court case, which involved a half-Hispanic man shooting an African American young man, caused some—mostly recycled Occupy Wall Street types who put their bongs down long enough to join the cause—to protest. In some (admittedly rare) cases, stores were looted.

The current discussion of race, tragically, has nothing to do with race, and everything to do with resuscitating Obama. He has confirmed that America, while no doubt still home to pockets of racism here and there, is capable of electing an African American, not once, but twice.

There is abundant comfort in that; a generation ago, it wouldn’t have been possible. And if Hillary Clinton should run and win (heaven forbid), we’ll all be able to pat ourselves on the back for breaking the presidential glass ceiling.

And it’s highly likely that she’ll be 2016’s Democratic nominee, and, by extension, the next President of the United States, assuming the Republican Party’s nominee has no vision, and assuming that megalomaniacal libertarians continue to think that their vote is the only vote that matters anymore.

In a word (or two,) it isn’t.

More importantly though, between now and next year’s mid-term elections, it is essential that conservatives don’t allow the Left to control the conversation, which seems to be trending toward a discussion of race

The Weston A. Price Foundation: How Does It Help Me?

The Weston A. Price Foundation, (WAPF), is a nonprofit, tax-exempt charity founded in 1999 to honor and disseminate the research of nutrition pioneer Dr. Weston A. Price, whose studies of isolated non-industrialized peoples established the parameters of human health, and determined the optimum characteristics of human diets. Dr. Price served as the chair of the research arm of what became the American Dental Association from 1914-1928, and wrote the classic work, Nutrition And Physical Degeneration.

activism, and supports a number of movements that contribute to this objective including accurate nutrition instruction, organic and biodynamic farming, pasture-feeding of livestock, community-support-

The Foundation’s quarterly magazine, Wise Traditions in Food, Farming and the Healing Arts, is dedicated

to exploring the scientific validation of dietary, agricultural and medical traditions throughout the world.

It features illuminating and thought-provoking articles on current scientific research, human diets, nontoxic agriculture, and holistic therapies. In addition, it serves as a source for foods that have been conscientiously grown and processed.

Annually a national convention and/or symposium is held. The list of speakers is a genuine Who’s Who of the movers and shakers in this back-to-health movement. Lectures on natural

healing modalities, repairing autism, the horrors of vaccinations, the importance of good fats, the risks and dangers of drugs (better known as pharmaceuticals), the important benefits of consuming

pasture-finished beef instead of consuming corporate feed-lot beef are just a few of the many topics available at this educational convention. It also features an exciting trade show. The national symposium provides an opportunity to obtain books and information not normally available.

An extensive system of local chapters also helps consumers find healthy foods available in their communities. Game Day Safety

It’s football time! Whether you go to your local High School game, Tuscaloosa, Auburn, Nashville or Atlanta; there are some things you need to do, to make sure you have an enjoyable time and not have the unexpected loss of property or injury while at the game. Much like a coach prepares his team for all situations on the football field, you need to be prepared for all situations when attending the game.

One of the first things you need to be aware of is traffic flow in and out of the stadium area. Make sure you know what roads are inbound and outbound to the stadium; remember on game day streets that are normally two-way may become one-way streets.

When you arrive and are looking for a place to park make sure you park in a well-lit area. This will help you find your vehicle after the game but it also will provide a safer environment to park since, most welllit areas will have some kind of security presence; either cameras or roving patrols. We all want to park as close to the stadium as possible, and most of the time, stadiums have businesses and homes close by. You may be tempted to park in these private property areas, but be careful if you do. Most businesses do not allow game day parking and may have your vehicle towed at your expense. If you decide to park at someone’s house, there is no guarantee that the home owner will protect your property, and it is doubtful that their

When you find your seat, you should still be aware of those around you, but at this point, you can sit back and enjoy the game knowing you have done all you can do to protect your family and property. After the game, you need to be on alert again; wait in the stands to let the crowds move out so there is less risk of getting injured in the mass of people trying to leave. Take the same precautions leaving the stadium as when you arrived, and you should have an enjoyable time without any issues.
