Kelly Nave, founder of Kelly’s Studio of Dance has had the chance to travel and dance all over the world, and has always wanted to impart a strong sense of adventure and purpose to her students. From the beginning, Kelly’s Studio of Dance (KSD) has had the philosophy that “It’s always been about way more than dance.”

What does that mean? That as satisfying and creative as dancing can be, what is far more important is to build the dancer into an excellent, hard-working performer -- a person who gives back, builds their faith, strengthens their community, and has a whole lot of fun while doing it.

I am still floating in sheer wonderfulness after having attended the Women’s Resource Center fundraiser dinner featuring actress Ashley Bratcher on August 10. It was held at the Limestone County Event Center; the meal was delicious, the music provided by Claire Carpenter was memorable, and I have rarely been prouder to be an Athenian.

For several months, Athens Now and WKAC’s Tennessee Valley Spotlight have been talking about the annual dinner as a “blessed event” whose purpose is to help people look upon a baby’s birth as an undeniably “blessed event,” even when a pregnancy is unplanned. Speaking of Unplanned, the movie in which Ashley stars, the DVD came out yesterday, and we will be adding it to our tribe’s video library post haste. It is the true, well-acted, beautifully filmed story of Abby Johnson, the woman that Planned Parenthood believed would be their perennial poster child of empowered pro-choice womanhood until the day came when she saw an abortion in real time via ultrasound. As the tag line on the movie poster says, “What she saw changed everything.”

Abby was the director of a Texas Planned Parenthood clinic, worked there while over 20,000 babies died, and ironically her colleagues threw her baby shower in the lobby of the clinic after the area director left for the day. Planned Parenthood, letting us in on things that they do, believe, and promote that are as disturbing as they are now well-documented.

What made the evening so beautiful was having the experience of what felt like a singular, tender, funny, intimate conversation with a brave young woman in the form of Ashley Bratcher, and it was like just the two of us were having coffee. The only thing was that there were literally hundreds of other people in the room. That is a skill that public speakers figuratively would give their eyeteeth to attain, which may not be an appropriate analogy here, seeing as we are discussing an organization which sells fetal body parts to the highest bidder over lunch and Chablis. Okay, let me rephrase. As someone who communicates for a living, I want to be like Ashley when I grow up.

Ashley was real, raw, and dear.

She herself had an unplanned pregnancy, married the father, and said with courage, “We worked very hard to make this work.” They have a beautiful son, and learned on the day that she got the part in Unplanned, that her own mom had literally been on the table getting ready to abort Ashley but couldn’t go through with it. She gave honor to her grandmothers, who long ago implanted faith in her heart and waited for it to take root and rise up. Most importantly, she gave real live hope, and that is one of the most powerful forces on the planet.

umphs of this past year, I saw before me a highly professional, compassionate woman with a humble heart give God glory for accomplishing the impossible, things that a few years ago were fond entries on the WRC Wish List. What are some of those impossibles? -- An ultra-sound machine that nearly always results in a woman or couple deciding to let their child live, even if they give it up for adoption; a beautiful building on Market Street that only has $65,000 left on their mortgage, extended hours; more supplies; and my personal favorite, men who have stepped up to mentor men who find themselves facing down an unplanned pregnancy from an often overlooked perspective, that of fathers.

What sealed the deal as far as a night I shall never forget was hearing about some of the carefully trained volunteers.

A young woman could not remember the name of the women who had helped her arrive at her own life-affirming choice, but knew they had made themselves available to her, including by cell. What comes up on her phone when she needs help? “The Nice Ladies.” We have courageous “Nice Ladies” here in Athens, along with volunteers, companies, churches, and individuals who are saving lives. And, we have now been graced with Ashley, who is my most recent entry on my own wish list of people I hope to meet someday. If not here, then on the other side, forever.

The Ground Kisser

On Monday, August 19 at 7 p.m., residents of Athens are in for a rare look into the bravery of Vietnam vets as told from the perspective of a 12-yearold girl. The Vietnam Veterans of America will be hosting an evening with Alabama resident Thanh Dương Boyer, author of The Ground Kisser. Thanh saw the fall of Saigon, and her well-to-do family lost literally everything. Their hope had been to escape to Australia together, but with only a few hours to consider their options, the decision was made to send their two young daughters into unspeakable danger on an overcrowded ship into pirate-ridden waters.

Thanh was not a believer at the time, and her faith came later. I have no doubt that God sent His angels to intervene on her behalf time after time, and as one reviewer said: This true story is about a well-to-do Vietnamese family who faced many hardships and struggles when South [Vietnam] fell to a communist regime. It is both heartrending and inspirational. As many young people today support the idea of socialism for America, this book would open their eyes to what really happens in a country when a government is communist controlled. It also shows how things work together for good when we focus on God, pray diligently, and trust Him to guide us through our lives.

first time that I will hear what I have come to understand is the passionate determination on the part of Thanh to tell the truth and set the record straight.

There is nothing like the power of a personal story, and I can hardly wait until Tuesday!

One last plug from a reviewer: If you love living in America, read this book! If you are disenfranchised by our government, read this book! If you support capitalism, read this book. If you support socialism, ster of the VVA wrote, saying, “It will trigger all your emotions.”

As an author myself, I took a great deal of time to explain in my own book what it is like to be seduced by “Communism under the guise of Socialism,” and was nearly a casualty to the radical agenda of the ‘60s.

by Ali Elizabeth Turner Steven Elliott, owner of the Workout Anytime in Athens, has always had a heart to help people meet their physical fitness goals as well as physical therapy needs. He received his Doctor of Physical Therapy from Washington University in St. Louis and completed the requirements to be a manually certified physical therapist. After graduation he worked in several Benchmark Physical Therapy clinics, and had the desire as an entrepreneur to “own something for ourselves.” In 2016 Steven married his wife Ashley, who is a nurse, and they are expecting their first child. They both have pursued the American Dream through hard work and perseverance, and their sacrifices are paying off to the benefit of Alabamians.

Steven and Ashley are now the owners of six Workout Anytime clubs, and the seventh will be opening in Lawrenceburg, TN later this year.

Workout Anytime started in Atlanta 20 years ago, and the franchise has grown throughout the Southeast, now having 175 locations. Steven is also the area developer for Alabama and helps train and support franchisees, their managers, and employees, so they can serve clients with a high degree of professionalism.

One of the core values of Workout Anytime is giving back to the community, especially to military service members. Workout Anytime has partnered with the Lift For The 22 organization to decrease the number of veteran suicides. They also support finding a cure for ALS through fundraising. First Annual Limestone County Arm Wrestling Competition on October 26, which is the brainchild of Grip Events.

I spoke with Charlie McMullins, Brendon Lewter, and Ali Pieper, the Grip Events team, and learned that arm wrestling is a big deal elsewhere in the country. They are working with Workout Anytime to make it a major competitive sport throughout the South.

The photographs are the work of the late Mary Jean Hammons, a graduate of Tanner High School, who worked at Redstone Arsenal as a member of the Von Braun team. Her passion, however, was music and art. She moved to New York in 1957 where she worked as the creative music director for Oak Publications and reviewed books for Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, and the Supremes. She won awards in book design, art direction, and photography.

Hammons started a private school for actors and singers and became the voice and acting coach for stars on All My Children, as well as Broadway and the movies. She performed in the folk trio “The All Night Singers” and toured many cities. She never forgot Athens and Limestone County.

On her visits home, she used her camera to save moments of

In 2018, the Hammons family approached High Cotton Arts photographer Randall Lewter about making prints from old negatives they discovered. Lewter, who enjoys photographing historic sites and old buildings, agreed to not only curate and make prints, but also create an Eye on The South Exhibit at High Cotton Arts to share Hammons’ work with the

On Friday, Aug. 16 from 6-8 p.m., Lewter and Athens Arts League are hosting a reception for the Eye on The South Exhibit that features the work of Hammons. The public is invited to learn more about Hammons and see images from Limestone County of places and people who are gone except for their image in print.

They flew into Glasgow and took a train into Stonehaven, our sister city (or twinning city,

as they say) which has a population of around 11,000. They got a chance to talk to the locals about the purpose of their trip, and one of the things they had to work past was the universally negative perception about politics in the U.S., with specific respect to the president. To that end, Holly Hollman and the Mayor crafted a statement of intent that seemed to smooth things: "We are here as a city interested in building relationships, and in our cities sharing and learning together. If people want to make a difference and enhance a community, it's on the local level. We cannot allow perceptions, politics, and religion to pre-

Mayor Ronnie and the intrepid crew that travelled to Scotland made it back in one piece after missed flights, missing luggage and other adventures. The jet lag was brutal, and Mayor Ronnie told me when we talked on Monday that he finally felt like he was “back.” Despite days that were pedal to the metal morning ‘til night, the trip was something none of them will ever forget. Representatives from city government, education, tourism, and those who wanted to get in touch with their Scottish roots made the trip, and as Mayor Ronnie said, “This trip had long days and lots of opportunities.”

They went to castles, Aberdeen, Edinburgh, were on the water along the coastland, played croquet, saw spectacular fireworks, and ate haggis. For those of you who are not familiar with this delicacy, it is described as: “A Scottish dish consisting of a sheep's or calf's offal mixed with suet, oatmeal, and seasoning and boiled in a bag, traditionally one made from the animal's stomach.” They were given “the honors of Scotland, which are replicas of a crown and sword, and sang Auld Lang Syne with arms linked with the Scots.

Crockett. He is in fact a distant relative of our very own Davey Crockett, and was a superb host to our mayor.

Mayor Ronnie got to visit the Scottish Parliament and met with Ellen Wong, the Ambassador to Scotland. He said she registered a document with the State Department that endorsed the trip, and connoted its importance. It became clear to Mayor Ronnie and Deborah Baird from ASU, and Trey Holladay of the Athens Public Schools that the greatest opportunity for relationship building between the two cities was going to be found in education. There is a strong desire on the part of the Scots to be involved in science and space exploration. With Athens being right next to Rocket City, the chance to be a part of Space

Camp or the Space and Rocket Center is quite attractive.

Before we prayed, Mayor Ronnie said that the biggest benefit of the entire trip was the cultural and educational opportunities for both communities.

School here in Athens was due to begin, and as always, Mayor Ronnie, who is a former teacher, thought of the teachers and students, along with the new school year. “All of it makes you think of the legacy we are leaving, the love of teachers for their students, and the legacy and history of the Scottish people.”

He told me about the fond farewell they were given as they left, but without trying to imitate the Scottish brogue with which it was spoken: “Haste ye back!”

And then it was time for Ronnie to roll.

Burn-The-Ships Mentality

It has been just over two weeks now since I started my new career moving past retail, and I have to admit it has been the fastest time period in my life.

I want to thank the folks who have either called me, texted me, or even stopped me when out in public. I really want you to know your kind words are very encouraging and help give me the fuel I need to write the articles I do. Since having my newfound freedom, I am here to tell you I have continued my learning process, and the topic of this article is to commit to things and figure them out on the way.

Yes, you read that right.

You need to commit yourself to various things you are interested in and then just go do them. You are going to make mistakes along the way. You are probably going to feel like an idiot and look like one too; but that is all right.

The problem too many people have is they want to wait until they have all of their ducks in a row before they start. They make excuses such as, “When I have enough money I will...” or “When I know enough about....” These are all excuses used by people who are too afraid to just act.

Within the past few weeks, I have taken on some roles in my personal life that I normally would have passed on. The way I look at things though is that God has blessed me with an opportunity and I need to act upon it. Yes,

from when it comes to the things you know you need to commit yourself to?

Why have you been shying away? What are you afraid will happen? Once you realize what your weaknesses are, what your struggles are, and when you acknowledge them, then you need to make a list to overcome these obstacles. The biggest detractor in my life has been my inability to take action.

I could easily have taken the approach of thinking I needed to do some research before I committed or that I needed some time to think it over. Instead of making an excuse or saying I needed to think it over, as soon as I was asked if I was interested, I gave an emphatic answer of yes. The person did not need to know I was scared to death on the inside.

I am telling you there is no difference between you and me. I believe that everyone can achieve greatness, but people often fail because they lack the necessary courage and commitment to succeed. So you need to commit to things and figure them out along the way.

I guarantee that there is someone reading this who has been putting off starting a business because of the “What ifs” -- and my answer is to commit to saying “Yes” and figure it out later.

Once you get started on whatever it is you want to accomplish, as long as you are moving forward and making progress, you will achieve greater levels of success, especially compared to the people who wait until they figure things out or until they have enough money in the bank account. I cannot repeat enough for you to commit and figure it out along the way. What are you needing to commit to?

It is time to take action.

Greetings from Gdansk, Poland!

One of the first places to go when visiting Gdansk is the “Muzeum II Wojny Swiatowej” (Museum of the Second World War.) It should be noted that Poland does museums exceptionally well. This purposebuilt museum complex is striking. Surrounding the building is a flat, neatly landscaped plaza. Above it rises a jagged, glass-andrusted-steel tower. The museum occupies in excess of 50,000 square feet, entirely underground providing a somber tomb-like atmosphere, or perhaps something like a mausoleum.

It seems a fitting venue to delve into the history of WWII.

Poland lost around 17 per cent of its population during World War II, giving it the highest national death toll from the conflict. The permanent exhibitions primarily focus on

the experiences and suffering of civilian populations, with the military events as a backdrop. While the museum primarily focuses on the countries of East-Central Europe, there is no tunnel vision, it also examines the tragic war times from the perspective of otherworld countries.

This is the museum of a war, not a military museum, which tells the story of a war in terms of politics, ideology, and civil population. The 3-4 hours I spent here were thought provoking and emotional, allowing comparison of events occurring today with those which lead to WWII. A definite must-see when in Poland. Although some may be crying, “Is it here already?”-- others are saying, “I thought it would never get here!” We’re talking about football season, of course. Personally (disclaimer: editorial opinion to follow), I just think kids shouldn’t even be going back to school for at least another week or so. But, as they say, it is what it is, so let’s get caught up on what’s gone on since our last column: The Limestone Legends defeated the Albany Allstars in the opening round of the overall championship of the 10U Dizzy Dean World Series 8-5, and then were sent to the losers' bracket after a 13-0 loss to the Druid Hills Red Devils. The Legends got by the Clarksdale Coyotes 8-7 and finished as runner-up after an 11-0 loss in a title-game rematch with Druid Hills.

Athens High's Tucker Stockman and Ardmore's Cole Cheatham were invited to represent Alabama in the Prep Baseball Report Future Games in Cartersville, Georgia. The event is designed to give

top high school talent exposure to college coaches and professional scouts.

Athens grad Quez Watkins and former West Limestone standout Reed Blankenship have both been named to the C-USA All-Preseason football team. Watkins is a receiver for Southern Mississippi and led the team last season with 72 catches for 889 yards and nine touchdowns in 11 games. Blankenship plays safety for Middle Tennessee State and headed up the team with 107 tackles and four interceptions last year.

Blankenship was also tapped as a permanent team captain for the 2019 season at MTSU. Preseason volleyball rankings featured Athens Bible School at the top of Class 1A and Lindsay Lane at number three.

As always, the Athens Recreation Center has something going on: adult fall softball is going on throughout the month of August. Fee is $350 per team. Karate classes are being offered Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Zumba classes

Just Keep Asking!

KALB recently sent out an anonymous survey asking for honest answers about a certain topic. As part of the survey, there was a section where comments and questions could be left.

We received several interesting questions and I would like to take the time to provide answers.

If one person is asking, there are probably many others who would appreciate the same information.

COMMENT: “I would like to see other types of plastics recycled.”

KALB and the AthensLimestone Recycling Center would love to recycle all types of plastics; however, there is a reason why we only accept #1, #2, and #5. Our recycling center on Lucas Ferry Rd. can only accept items for recycling that we can sell to buyers in need of them.

If we took materials we were unable to move out, they would end up in the landfill. We will not accept anything we cannot legitimately recycle.

COMMENT: “I wish you took glass.”

First let me clear up something that can be confusing.

Materials placed in the blue rolling carts used to recycle at curbside in Athens are taken to the Decatur Recycling Center, not the Athens-Limestone Recycling Center. The Decatur center is set up to process comingled recy-

cling (all mixed together) and our center is not.

So the blue cart “rules” are different from those at the Athens-Limestone Recycling Center.

Our center on Lucas Ferry Road DOES accept glass bottles and jars. We DO NOT accept plate glass, china, ceramics, or anything other than bottles and jars.

You cannot put glass in your blue rolling carts because the glass will break when being dumped and will contaminate all of the other materials.

So, if you have glass bottles and jars to recycle, just take them to the Athens-Limestone Recycling Center on Lucas Ferry Rd. or to a community collection center located at several schools throughout Limestone County.

COMMENT: “There is a need for more education regarding recycling.”

We agree there can never be enough education about the need to recycle, and we want you to know that education is the main focus of our organization.

KALB visits classrooms, by invitation, with programs relating to recycling, dangers of litter, and our natural world from preschool through 6th grade. Please invite us.

us to speak at your club meetings, HOA meetings, church events, etc.

Electronics are considered any item that uses electricity (has a cord) or runs on batteries.

The only items for which the center charges a fee is televisions ($10 each).

All other electronics are accepted free of charge.

The center can even accept large appliances.

This recipe allows you to walk in the door from the daily hustle and bustle and have a delicious and healthy supper waiting on you.

This delicious crock-pot meal is only 4 ingredients!

Not only is it time saving and healthy, but it is also a great way to feed your family for very little money. Think about how much it costs for 2 adult hamburger combos and 2 kids’ meals. Now take a second and think how much this recipe would cost. You are going to find that this recipe is also great for your pocketbook.

Recipe #16 Back to School Salsa Chicken Crock-Pot Soup What You Need:

1 ½ lbs. boneless, skinless chicken breasts One 16 oz. jar of chunky salsa 2 cups chicken broth 8 oz. Pepper Jack cheese, cubed Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

Place chicken pieces at the bottom of a 6-quart crock pot. Top chicken with remaining ingredients. Cook on high 3-4 hours or on low 6-8 hours. Once soup is cooked, remove chicken pieces and shred chicken. Return to crock pot and stir into soup.

Serve warm. You can top with cheese, sour cream, avocado, or green onions.

One Without The Other

The trend of making everything a dichotomy is causing the meaning of fundamental maxims to lose relevance. Culture wants to separate church from state and morality from fact in order to accommodate the few that aim to control the many.

Of course, people in leadership want to feel as though they are doing “good”; however, the refusal to acknowledge the need to fuse truth with information is to usher in chaos with a red carpet.

Continuing the efforts to widen the chasm between church and state

shows a lack of understanding of the need for both of them to keep each other in social check.

Neither entity can invade each other’s liberty. The Church cannot demand that individuals to follow doctrine against their will, and the state cannot mentally enslave individuals who have a belief that they are already free. The state cannot misuse the Church, and the Church cannot misuse the state. They ought to be forever bound to count on each another to hold a people together for the sake of those people alone. They are not ‘separate but equal,’ they

are intertwined and fated to fall should their union ever break.

A few months ago, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stated, “There's a lot of people more concerned about being precisely, factually, and semantically correct than about being morally right.” On the campaign trail, former Vice President Joe Biden mirrored those remarks by saying, “We choose truth over facts!” In all matters of integrity, it is fundamentally impossible and naïve to separate truth from fact and morality from precision.

Morality devoid of empirical fact and coherent truth is a formula for vengeance, hedonism, and corruption. One would gather just enough information to make a personal narrative whose “plausibility” justifies acting in a defensive and selfpreserving manner. Even if the action is found to either be utterly wrong or too harsh, the justification to ignore imperative facts is indulgently embraced.

The Judeo-Christian worldview depicts “righteousness and justice are the foundation of the throne” on which God

demonstrates His rule.

Even for God, it is impossible for Him to enact His judgement without righteousness and justice. Justice without morality cannot stand, and righteousness without judgement of violation cannot stand. There is not a man on Earth that would demand justice without a founded morality of some nature.

It is a pure vanity that asks an individual what they think they deserve without any regard for what the cost may be for the opposing party. To say there are zero consequences for resisting fundamental principles would be equally untrue and unfair. For example, consider the seven (originally eight) deadly sins: lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, pride, (and vanity). They can start as self-inflicted, but if left unchecked, they will demand an external victim. Each one slowly diminishes your decency.

Pope Gregory I stated that, “Pride is the queen of sins (vices).”

C.S. Lewis asserted, “[T]he essential vice, the utmost evil, is Pride.”

In 1997’s The Devil’s Advocate, the devil pronounces, “Vanity, definitely my favorite sin.

The dare to tear down the very foundation that holds you up is a fool’s errand. To ask for justice apart from truth is to ask for imprudent judgement for yourself.

It is exciting and motivating to think of setting new goals and getting back into a positive routine after a relaxing summer filled with few commitments or schedules to keep. However, as you begin to work out logistics, it’s important to make sure you plan adequate ways to keep good nutrition and sleep habits a priority for you and your family in the hustle.

This does a couple of things -- first, it saves you time; second, it allows you to avoid the tempting bad choices you face as you walk down the aisles at the grocery store. Finally, prep just 3 dinners a week by cooking your meat or cutting up your veggies ahead

of time. Also, when you cook, plan for extra. This way you have some leftover for healthy lunches or easy dinners later in the week. Finally, if you have a little extra time on a weekend here and there, cook or prep a few healthy meals that can be frozen and pulled out on those crazy days where life just doesn’t go as planned.

Kelly's Studio of Dance Creating Community Through Choreography

Whether it’s been through Serve Day, giving recitals, praying together, Summer Camp, competitions, or international travel, KSD is committed to being much more than a place to learn to dance well.

This has been a banner year for KSD, and as I spoke with Kelly about all that has been accom-

plished, I had to fight tears as I heard about touching stories, breakthroughs in performances, winning awards, helping grow our community, building relationships that will last a lifetime, and even a cruise to the Bahamas. Kelly has no problem expressing what she is about and how KSD functions: “It is about building students, helping mold strong, con-

fident, enthusiastic young people who serve. Dance is an avenue to build kids and community.”

This past Sunday, for the first time, KSD stepped out and did something a bit risky, and that was to gather KSD students, their families and friends together for a back-toschool event called, “Praying People.” They wanted to come together in unity

and ask God to move this year in our schools. Teachers, administrators, students, and families were all prayed for, with the intent that it would be a safe, positive, productive school year for everyone. Pastor Joel Carwile of First Baptist Church in Athens presided, and Kelly told me, “There were tears, happiness, and hugs.” About 60 people showed up, and Kelly added, “I am thankful we have the freedom to do this here in Athens.” It was another thing, a thing that had nothing to do with dance, and everything to do with Someone greater than oneself.

Another KSD first for 2019 was a cruise to the Bahamas on Royal Caribbean from June 24 to 28.

About 30 people went, and 9 dancers from the age of 9-17 performed as part of the ship’s entertainment staff. While it was most definitely a magnificent trip, it was a lot of hard work; more importantly, there was a bonding amongst the dancers and the families that Kelly believes will last a lifetime. It’s difficult to describe how powerful those kinds of experiences can be. Kelly told me that just last week she went out to dinner with several of those who were on the trip, and had a wonderful time. “I have always loved experiencing new cultures, introducing my dancers to different parts of our country and abroad, and I am so thankful for families that will invest in not only their child’s dancing, but also in life experiences to broaden

their horizons,” she added.

The theme of this year’s recital was “Brave,” and Kelly said her dancers were challenged to be brave, whether it was at home, school, church, and to follow their convictions, no matter what.

“We had three performances, and for the first time, we highlighted family “brave” stories each night. John David Crowe produced a video of each family’s story, and they came on stage while it was being played. One story was of a dancer’s daddy who had been deployed to Afghanistan.

It was not just about the soldier’s commitment to fight for our country, and the bravery that goes with such a commitment, it also honored the family who waited for his safe return.

Another story was that of an adoptive family.

Ten years ago a little girl was brought from China to her “forever family,” who chose KSD as a way for her to have fun and make friends through the international language of music and dance. “Oftentimes kids will come for the first time and cry when their parents go; but before they know it, they are fine and having fun. What I found out is that this was the very first time the parents left her with anyone since bringing her home, and the fact that they trusted me with her, it really touched me,” said Kelly. A third story was about the family of Kevin and Stacey Givens. Both of their kids are brave, as Brooks has sensory needs, and Ally, who dances at KSD has a severe hearing impairment.

“You would never know by watching Ally dance that she struggles to hear the music,” said Kelly.

“She is a talented little girl,” Kelly added, and someone else told me that Ally is one amazing sister to her brother, Brooks. Stacey spearheaded a project to have a sensory room (where kids on the spectrum or who grapple with other issues can go to re-group and then re-join their classroom) installed in his school. Now, thanks to her efforts, there is a sensory room in every Athens City School, and First Baptist has one for kids in their church. This is a brave family that has chosen to be unstop-

pable, and Kelly wanted to acknowledge their courage as part of the “Brave” recital. Once Stacey was asked about their family’s journey, and how she can be so brave facing her family’s challenges. Her answer? “Because my faith is bigger than my fear.”

Master teachers from all over America come in for workshops. Classes for “Baby Ballerinas” start at the age of 2, and recently a mom told me that her 3-year-old absolutely loves life at KSD. KSD kids grow into remarkable young people, often come back to help teach, and they are making a positive dent in our Athens universe. Registration is open, new fall classes are forming, and you need to put your dancers of any age or skill level in the KSD “garden” so they can not only “sprout,” they can truly bloom forever.

The Finish Line Is Near!

We can’t see it, nor can we calculate when it might be. I was in church service and heard the minister say that he was 83 years old and did know when he would cross the line already drawn for him, He felt it would not be another 83 years for him to run this race, we call life.

When the Lord calls us, and it’s our time to cross “our” finish line, I ask myself and you, too, what will be on the other side?

Think about all we do and all the value we place on this earth, and then ask yourself: What have I been running or walking toward on my journey? Did I do what was required to be at peace when I finally cross my finish line? When we look at Matthew 24:14 For it is just like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted them with his possessions. The key words I took from the scripture were “entrusted” and “possessions,” for each of us knows only the life we have been given and the opportunities and possessions entrusted to us while living on this earth. Further, we can only speak for ourselves, not for our family, friends, coworkers….you can speak only for yourself!

Herd Mentality

by Deb Kitchenmaster Have you heard the term ‘herd mentality’? Interestingly enough there is a herd mentality among horses, and there is a herd mentality among humans.

Let’s take a look into this type of mentality in these two areas, starting with horses.

Because the horse is a social or herd animal and finds safety in numbers, almost all horses are herdbound. Next to the instinct to survive, this strong social behavior is number two in importance to the horse. The herd is EVERYTHING. Horses touch heads with each other, signifying, “You are part of the herd, along with me.”

Horses have a trust in the herd. Being within the herd is ‘a no-fear environment.’

The herd gives the horse security. Alive in the herd is this incredible thing called a pecking order.

Unlike the world of man where pride or ego yells, “Pick me, pick me!” the pecking order within the environment of the horse

is about strength, keenness and experience.

Helpful in building a healthy relationship with your horse is to understand the nature, the structure, and the importance of herd mentality. Let’s talk about the herd of two. That would be you and your horse. There is one leader and there is one follower. If you are not the leader, guess what? You are the follower! Experiencing possibly millions of years of herd instinct, the horse picks up very quickly where you are in the pecking order. The desired outcome is that the horse will easily accept your role as the leader. As a conscious leader, you will make choices that build trust between you and your horse, not squelch it. For example, if you are a handler that works through force, pain, or fear, the horse will never look to you as his leader.

He will see you as a predator! A handler, whose focus and motive is to develop trust between them and their horse will see the beauty of a horse relaxing to the point

where the horse is free to learn. What a beauty to behold when the handler is the leader of the herd! Your PRESENCE rings loud and clear ASSURANCE that you are part of the herd.

Human ‘herd mentality’ (aka mob mentality) describes how people can be influenced by their peers to adopt certain behaviors on a largely emotional, rather than rational, basis. When individuals are affected by herd mentality they may make different decisions than they would have individually. Herd mentality among humans describes a

behavior in which people act the same way or adopt similar behaviors as the people around them – often ignoring their own feelings in the process. Some studies concluded that we experience the same emotions as the people around us. Here are five thoughts in safeguarding yourself from herd mentality. (1) Stop being on auto-pilot. What does that mean? Hit the ‘Pause’ button and consider your options. Instead of copying the behavior of people you see around you, make more decisions for yourself. (2) Make a conscious effort to

form your own opinion.

Rather than adopt the herd mentality, educate yourself about your choices so you can make a well-informed decision. (3) Take time to make decisions. Take time in making decisions by asking questions and thinking about your options – even if that means you risk looking stupid or holding up the line. Just because everyone else seems to be making a quick decision doesn’t mean they know best. (4) Be AWARE of ways in which stress affects your decision making. If you are stressed about something going on in your personal life, you’re at greater risk of being a copycat. Recognize that risk, and when possible, put off decision making until you can concentrate on the task at hand.

(5) Be willing to stand out.

We are more likely to copy other people when we lack social acceptance. Be willing to stand out and dare to do things differently.

Managing Your Back-To-School Mental Health

by Lisa Philippart, Licensed Professional Counselor “You’re off to great places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, so…get on your way!”

- Dr. Seuss For those heading back to school, young and old, chances are you’ve already made your checklists.

Schedule? Check. Supplies? Check. Organized?

Check. But there’s something likely missing from your list, and it might be the most important thing you take care of all year: addressing your mental health and wellbeing. Going back to school can be exciting, full of opportunities and challenges. But it can also be terrifying, particularly if you have already experienced bullying, anxiety, stress, depression, or trauma. At every level from elementary school to college, students today are grappling with intense experiences. If you are feeling a whirlwind of back-toschool emotions, there are effective ways to respond.

Here are five suggestions for navigating through the challenging back-to-school labyrinth, especially for those who struggle with a mental illness:

as stomachaches or headaches, difficulty sleeping, tight muscles or cramping, or dizziness. If you want an outside assessment of your feelings, and may not feel comfortable talking to a friend or family member, you can go to Mental Health America’s free and anonymous screening tool at: https://screening.mentalhealthamerica.net/screening-tools. The key here is to find a healthy way to deal with the change, such as talking to someone you trust or a mental health professional, writing about your emotions, exercising, or joining a club or support group.

2. Get plenty of sleep!

(This really applies to any age!) If you are under the age of 25, your brain has not fully matured yet. For

elementary age students, at least 9 hours of sleep is recommended. High school students need about 8 hours of sleep per night.

And for college students, getting at least 6 hours of sleep helps the brain continue to develop, allows you to retain more information, and provides better overall physical health.

Pulling all-nighters is never more effective than getting a good night’s sleep.

The answers to these questions can prepare you for the moments when stress and anxiety strike. The time is now to develop healthy ways to cope with life’s challenges. For suggestions on learning new skills to better manage your emotions, go to the Mental Health America’s toolkit at:

3. Identify your coping skills. You may have already put together a list of coping skills because you know that returning to school can trigger emotional and mental distress.

It is important to ask yourself these types of questions: What worked before to help me feel better?

4. Get educated on and about the internet. The internet is crammed full of mental health resources and educational materials.

I have already mentioned the Mental Health America website for valuable and accurate information.

If you are on sites that are not healthy for you, you need to step away and stay away until you are in a better place emotionally.

5. Allow yourself to make mistakes. Many students feel pressure to never mess up, or that failure “is not an option.”

However, these experiences are a part of this world and can help you to develop important life skills. As you go through the process of learning about yourself and your environment, mistakes will happen. Positive mental health is achievable through learning from past slipups, which allows you to move forward in a healthier way…establishing new patterns to better handle those situations that will pop up again. In other words, you learn to prepare alternative possibilities. Think to yourself, if this happens, what else can I do? Failure is one option, but not the only option. I wish you a mentally healthy school year!
