ALLORA An office for millennials in Chinatown

Just 2 decades ago, work would have meant going to a designated space of a designated location during a designated period to perform a list of designated task.

But with globalization and technological advances these are all set to change. Research has shown that businesses globally are slowly subscribing to various forms of flexible working arrangements and indications show these approaches actually heightens productivity.

Be it flexible work hours or flexible work locations, the dilemma that companies will face in the near future is if an office is really necessary for the successful running of their operations. Designs of conventional offices where efficiency, productivity and ranks had worked for the previous generation are slowly making way for new office environments, which invites creativity and collaborations across a flat organization structure.

Bounded by Cross Street in the North and Club Street towards the Southeast, the site is located at the fringe of Chinatown area. Being at the periphery, this area of the city commands a lower rent but remains attractive due to its proximity to the life and buzz of the city.

UNDERSTANDING ZUMTHOR & PHEMENOLOGY Peter Zumthor’s distinctive represntation of architecture perhaps embodies the principles of phenomenology, a belief in the primacy of sensory and experiential qualities in architecture. In which, I chose to delve into his Swiss Sound Pavillion.

A sort of representation in architecture is involved, such as, sound words, food and people to create a real spectacle for the senses and a journey through the spaces.

The idea of entanglement persists throughout the wholestructure, from the basket-weave plan and the walls of transversely stacked timbers and planks, to the acoustic experience of multiple musical performances.Here is a summary my own interpretation of phemenology.

1, Matetrial compatibility; where it gives rise to something unique, sense of the presence and weight of materials. 2 , The body of architecture; an anatomy of space; things that brings prescence in a piece of architecture. 3 , Surrounding objects; they all come together in a caring, loving way and there is a deep relationship with every thing in the surrounding. Makes it cohesive and a space altogether.

4 , The sound of a space; placing of interior spaces are like instruments amplyfying and transmitting sounds all around. You feel present wherever.

A building cannot be explained as a whole by its form, but the spirit of a space at beginning unfolds the story of one’s imagination.

The presence and soul of Chinatown flourishes in the roads (negative spaces) that are in between the shop houses and built ups.

Phenomenology of the journey through the negative spaces evokes ambiguity/ and spatially unfolding the story of Chinatown and translating this into the project, ALLORA. Acknowledging Chinatown as a ‘working hub’ shown that Singapore has morphed from a historical success to an urban concrete jungle.

Working life has led people to constantly strive for greed and not the fruition of their work, leaving them unaware of the life that they are leading.

ALLORA is a composite of senses of a user wondering through his daily life in this building.

Through a series of connected spaces, it provokes one’s thougt where spaces unfolds, peaking the interest of the user. Making the user feel spatially aware of his surroundings and not just engrossed in his daily routine of going to the office to work.

Form and facade itself, juxtaposes the interior where it deludes one’s perception of a building to be expressed in its simplicity; which internally morphs into phenomena.

The ‘designed feature’ walls create creates a negative space; circulation for users.

Phemenology and the five senses lingers in the user’s mind. Through a series of connected spaces, it provokes one’s thought through the unfolding of spaces, peaking curiosity. Wait, what is happening somewhere, what am I hearing? Subconciously user feels spatially aware of his area .

office space An office for editors should horizonless, like their minds. The material of the walls mimic a story : the brick walls imitates a blank canvas for one’s raw emotion to give sense to a space, not taking away the beauty of the place. Glass blocks; speak as peering into the distance and a play on interaction between people and spaces. Methphorically interlacing the two spaces through sight.

Work + play there should be an invisible fringe, where imagination dances on the happier side of life. Which is where ideas spark & are being created.

cafe‘ Extracting not-literally a concept from Peter Zumthor, different ares of entry into the building, render below is one of the 5 entrances.

Infering Chinatown and the Swiss pavillion as a ‘maze’, where it consits of numerous beginnings and ending areas, this idea was integrated into the main concept of ALLORA. Like this cafe, provoking a subtle and calm setting for the users, compared to the other entrances.

CENTRAL NODE HDB for a new generation of families

The ever present 90’s era lingers in these small shophouses and alleys.

As it has been said, history is more than just the dates, it’s the people ; the community. Commonwealth Crescent has stood the test of time, and to me this place is like achar (pickles) in a jar, preserved in all its glory, beautiful and always delightful.

It had what I might say a ‘bizzare affair’ with me, this place. Confusing as it might already seem, this Year 2 project I did not carry it out the way it was expected (from myself). This site somehow kept me coming back for more, but no apparent reason. I found myself dawdling from alleys to shops to odd corners, clicking away.

There were times I found myself sitting at the carpark (the plot) doodling ideas, scribbling design theories. Now whenever I pass Commonwealth in the train, bittwersweet memories, all I can say.

One of my most memorable projects, in a non-architectural form.

Commonwealth Crescent is known for its rich heritage and lush landscape.

To allow Central Node to adapt and relate to the existing context, the dwelling revolves around the concept of creating spaces at the ‘heart of the site’.

This mimics the existing commonwealth plot which could comprehend it as the centre of everything. However the area has lost its youthful spirit it once possessed, mainly due to the younger generation of familes fleeting to highrise condominiums.

Central Node rejuvinates the neighbourhood by introducing ‘modern’ landscaping, amenities and spaces that cater to all age groups. This project seeks to revitalise the essence of community spirt and revive the hustle and bustle Commonwealth once was.

The detail shows the sun shading timber louver facade Having bay windows facing the east-west sun reduces glare from the sun; decreasing temperature in the building. Also ventilation is not hindered.

A prototype that I researched online by Shma Architects, is a vertical green wall is used at the ‘feature space’. Materials used to construct the panels are made of recycable felt board (green wall), timber strips to promote ventilation, an a UV tinted glass to prevent glare. The modular system is approximately 180mm thk with simple irrigation and drainage construction. Using stainless steel structure, makes construction of the panels fast and simple.

THE SHIFT HOUSE ‘Client’ based landed house

For this project I studied Gordon Matta -Clark and his works. In relation with architecture, every idea being devised and constructed has a latent concept to discover. Matta-Clark hopes that through his works people are able to perceive the elements of architecture in many aspects; not just the aesthetics or design.

His designs revolve around the extraction and dissection of architectural elements, in hopes to show that deconstruction in his works can change the perception of the ‘mainstream’. Certain designs implicated are repeated, to emphasise; an imagery. Like the sudden ‘shifts’ or ‘slits’ in this design of the house.

The client is an expansive male sculptor that takes pride in his work; for himself and others to enjoy. He regards familirisation as a concept for his dwelling; a home where his comfort meshes with character and lifestyle.

An imagery of this client intertwined with Matta-Clark, allowed bold and rational ideas to form. The design intent is to create a semi-open concept house that exudes the client’s traits, yet warm and humble.

Slotting, piercing or splicing of space under the roof.

Hence the roof is jutting out. Focused attention to that area of the roof

Dynamism of the house was to be included and this was portrayed through the roof, displacement of walls and the triangular shaped plot that the house was built on. The skylights on the roof, and enough windows on the exterior of the house provides a welcoming ambience for the client and sufficient daylighting. The windows are placed strategically to face the wind path direction to obtain sunlight.

The feature space incorporated the gap, has a water feature and a staircase leading to the second level that protrudes out of the wall. The ‘split’ in the centre of both parts of the house catches the attention of the user. Although the client is an outgoing person, the top level of his home was to be private. The bedroom was no open areas for privacy. The last space is his workspace that he takes pride in. His working area is a ‘display’ where from the double volume living room can be seen. He wants his sculpts and hardwork to be noticed.

INTERNSHIP 3 months with asolidplan

The 3 months of working in Asolidplan was nothing short of amazing. I was an undergraduate with zero architectural industry knowledge and was entrusted with responsibilities.

However, my boss and colleagues were the warmest and most patient nurturers I ever met. Giving me endless opportunities; creating and submitting 2 sets of tender drawings for quotation and construction.

Being a part of client meetings and constantly giving constructive help throughout the internship period.

It was not actually all work. Me and my colleagues were tasked to build models to brush up our skills, devise a prototype for the office and many more. I gained a lot of confidence by stepping foot in this industry back then. So much I have learned, seen and adapted to. All thanks to the people in asolidplan.*all credits to asolidplan*

The slabs were made of concrete and of different outcomes. Some were solid where else some were porous.

LED strips were soldered to fit the acrylic tube and sprayed white to reduce luminosity.

The slabs were changable and stackable according to how much brightness the user requires.

At 6 in the afternoon with all the lights off. It had its charm of its own; a concrete ‘light’ on a concrete table.It did quite esolve the issue of a dark office.

The river Rhine flows close to the former paper factory of Marzabotto which is situated at the foot of Monte Sole historical park. It boasts a privileged location for a productive building and acquires value thanks to the quality of the architectural design and the elegance of the thought behind the design. The Mantuan paper factory of Burgo is one of the main works of Pier Luigi Nervi which best represents his style.

DISMECO is a leading company in Europe in the disposal and recycling of electrical equipment. DISMECO, thinking about new generations, aims at creating in its building the first and most excellent school of the world dedicated to the culture of ecology and sustainability. How to transform an old paper factory into a facility to become the symbol and cornerstone of ecology and environmental compatibility? On this question YAC lays the foundations for Green Academy, the Unindustria competition which aims at transforming an industrial architecture into the best training centre inspired by the principles of green economyand sustainable development. A high level school, a ludic-experiential centre for children and a business incubator for environmentally friendly start-ups

BCA-CDL ‘Green Sparks’

During my second year, my peers and I participated in the BCA CDL ‘Green Sparks’ competititon. The site was ocated at Level 6 of Singapore’s First Eco-mall, City Square Mall, the Sky Park is a 4,000 sq ft outdoor event space. Currently, the space is utilised by community-interest groups as a venue for community events andactivities. It is not allowed by URA as a commercial space.The proposed green facility should complement City Square Mall’s positioning as a family centric-mall.

The intent was to seek to bridge the gap between human and nature through constant probing and analysis of the users and site in order to form unique human circulations around relevant spaces without sacrificing nature. Also creating spaces with an open-concept in mind to allow for a myriad of programmes and events to be held on the Sky Terrace that has been underused. Fusion Square is a common meeting place that fuses different activities together.

Passive features encompass the incorporation of a narrow building footprint and open concept layout that promotes air flow through the building.

The turning in orientation of the second floor about the lift allows heat to escape quickly due to the pavilion having a reduction in vertical density.

RE[GROVE] URA competition

This project aims in bringing back the lost history of Lower Seletar Reservoir & rejunvenating the space inspired by the lost ambience of mangrove trees and fishing village. The overlooked space stretches under the MRT tracks between Khatib and Yio Chu Kang stations beside Lower Seletar Reservoir. When travelling past the area, this place is often overlooked by the public as it is overshadowed by the height of the topography. Thus this proposed idea is to design the open area such that it captures the attention of passer-by’s and the essence of the space In this pleasant environment, the public can fish, cycle and enjoy the ambience of the space by strolling on the boardwalk. The elevated wooden platforms with benches are provided for the public to relax and enjoy the surroundings. At the edge, fishing decks are extended out so that a semi-private zone is formed for people to fish without hindrances. Behind the fishing decks, there are all cated pathways for pedestrians and cyclists. These are connected to the existing pedestrian Park Connector, which enables easy access to the parks. To promote the usage of the area, bicycles are available for rental at kiosks located under the featured mangrove design structure.

All activities and structures are family oriented and suitable for all age groups. This is to invite all age groups and attract a big crowd to this space
