The studio investigates additive manufactured architecture.

Design research involves the development of industrial robot manufacturing methods and technologies. Design and building tectonics are formulated with an understanding of how additive manufacturing is achieves both structural and visually language a large scale project.

The project proposes an additively manufactured car factory. The internal space and structure is informed through topological structural optimization followed by remodeling soft-forms using Autodesk Maya. The enclosure takes the metaphor of a car with its slender and directional articulation.

The exterior articulation is developed using resultant stress curves and follows a tectonic hierarchy, which challenges traditional architectural detailing. Roof, wall and floor connections and redefined with sinuous forms that connect emerge from the interior of the building and complete the exterior facade.

Facade: Directionality and Program The exterior facade achieves a sense of directionality as it moves from the front of the factory to the rear.

Thin articulation is varying densities allows for opening to view outside the factory.

Site Engagement: Public Plaza + Showroom The exterior facade of the factory offsets from the sidewalk and creates a central public plaza which serves as a outdoor showroom for cars. Reset entrances welcome the observer towards the central core of the building.

Challenging a contemporary Maison Domino An additive manufactures process of construction offers a contemporary re-definition to the ‘Maison-Domino’. It challenges the architectural tectonics of floor-slab and stair by proposing a sinuous continuity of structure and form .

Automated Articulation: Automated Stress-Strain Analysis through a grasshopper script and millipede

Reflected Ceiling Plan: Articulation An automated grasshopper script uses millipede stress curves to generate structural material deposition tool-paths which act as both structure and articulation.

POST-INDUSTRIAL UPS HUB NYC ONGOING RESEARCH - ASSET ARCHITECTURE, ALI RAHIM MSD: AAD ADVANCE STUDIO [ 08/2019 - 12/2019 ] NATHAN HUME, ALI RAHIM

In collaboration with Gao Sijie, Zhong Zhe

The project is an ongoing research into ‘Asset Architecture’

by Ali Rahim. This ongoing research derives its principles and design parameters by studying the service industry and economic framework of the city of New York.

A UPS hub is studied through the lens of an urban fabric intervention in Manhattan. The building challenges a new typology into the Manhattan skyline - namely, “post-industrial”, where New York is held responsible for the emergence of service industries like logistics and manufacturing. The project challenges how such commodities fit within the realm of architecture discourse.

The UPS hub questions iconic glass facades, where packages can have the ability to impart kinetics to the outer shell of the building. Inter-locking office and logistics spaces gives rise to contemporary office floor plan layouts while the two spaces seek and push and pull each other and create a sense of heterogeneity and juxtaposition.

Lastly, the New York’s urban block condition is challenged through lifting the building off the ground, where loading docks descend and create public spaces of interaction.

Office space as an organism Package movement, conveyor belts, elevators, people, robots and trucks makes a production ‘organism’ with an industrial typology. It proposes a living factory where human and non-human (machines) interact.

Layered Elevation Color used in the elevation is an abstract representation of concrete, steel and glass. Logistic systems create chunks of geometries on the facade, while an elevated plinth neutralizes the juxtaposition between office spaces and logistic units.

URBAN MIX-USE DEVELOPMENT STUDIO GANG ARCHITECTS [ WORK :: STUDY ] SPRING 2018 [ 01/2018 - 04/2018 ] CHIP VON WEISE, MELISSA LONG, CORBIN KEECH

In collaboration with Alec Smith

The project is a mix-use development in the neighborhood of Wicker Park along the north branch of Chicago river, 3 miles from Downtown. The site occupies an irregular trapezoid geometry that borders CTA Blue Line, 606 highline extension (proposed), Chicago river, and two street intersection. Its proximity to transit makes it a desirable place to develop, and has the potential to make a community with hyper-connection and high energy. The site is located in the industrial district zone of Chicago and is free from the Chicago road grid. The mix use development engages the site by drawing a physical grid from its immediate context.

The Chicago grid is then superimposed onto the site to create a dichotomy of a working narrative that attempts to reveal the qualities of the overlap. The project is rapidly developed in a professional office setting in collaboration with real community members as well as architects, engineers, and urban planners in the city to critique the project.

Intersecting programs governed by two grid systems Site plan demonstrates the overlap of the four high-rise towers onto the retail spaces. The 606 is extended into the site to form a connecting link between the four rooftop retail spaces.

AGENT-BASED ROBOTIC WEAVING PYTHON - GRASSHOPPER SPRING 2020 [ 01/2018 - 05/2020 ] UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA | INSTRUCTOR: EZIO BLASETTI

In collaboration with Andrew Billingsley and Patrick Danahy

This is a research project and tackles computation, robotics and topological optimization challenges. Based on the premise of topological optimization, or in other words, making a form with the least volume and surface area, the project demonstrates a robotic-driven weaving process which uses the least amount of material.

The project can be broken down into three parts. The first part uses a topologically optimized form derived from a universal solver algorithm which is then tested for its structural capabilities. The second part breaks down the form into portions which can then be robotic-woven as modules. The final part proposes a wandering agent closet path seeking script which automates the tool-tip of the robot and creates a weaving pattern.

The project is studied and simulated virtually and needs to be tested at real scale using robotic fabrication.

Wandering Agent simulation Two agents are allowed to ‘wander’ about the plane and seek the closest distance of travel to reduce length of tool path. Each agent is constantly informed by the other’s location. Together a weaving pattern is generated.

Robotic weaving simulation The tool-path created with the agents is tested with a custom robotic-weaving tool. Robotic arms are simulated locally to check for collision and node-wrapping constraints.

STRUCTURAL COMPUTATION KANGAROO - GRASSHOPPER COMPUTATIONAL DESIGN | FALL 2018 [ 09/2018 - 10/2018 ] VIRGINIA TECH | INSTRUCTOR: MARTIN ANGST

In collaboration with Evan McIver, Santiago Sanchez

The project uses a computation methodology to transform a physical model into a digital model. Computational tools such as Grasshopper, Processing, and Kangaroo Plugin are used to transform physical constraints into digital parameters.

The investigation forces a streamlined approach and helps create specific workflows between softwares to increase efficiency and output quality. Firstly, basic tools in illustrator are used to map constraints followed by image trace to compute the parameters of the constraints. These parameters are manipulated using kangaroo and lunch-box plug-ins in grasshopper to create a digital model with high accuracy.

IOT + IEQ DATA ANALYSIS PYTHON - PANDAS - SCI-KIT LEARN DATA ANALYSIS PROJECT | 07/2020 EDX NUS | INSTRUCTOR: CLAYTON MILLER

Individual project

This project uses a set of 500+ time-series meter data from buildings. It also uses outdoor temperature data obtained from an IEQ dataset. This data is obtained through the Building Data Genome Project. The following link includes an overview of data sets, sources, and publications that use the data set: https://github.com/buds-lab/the-building-data-genomeproject The project is coded completely in Google Colab, using python programming language. The packages used are Pandas, MatplotLib, Seaborn and Sci-kit Learn for machine learning.

The project is broken down into 4 parts: Data Wrangling Importing raw data followed by transforming and mapping data with an intent of making it appropriate for analytics.

Data Analysis Process of transforming and modeling data to discover useful information.

Data Visualization An important part for an architect or designer and deals with the visual and graphical representation of information.

Data Prediction or Machine Learning Extending the knowledge and information procured to make future analysis and speculations.

Making Predictions Supervised learning machine learning technique uses linear regressing, dummy variables and one-hot encoding to find predicted (orange) values. These values are then compared against the true (blue) values.

IMAGES PRODUCED USING AI ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE FALL 2020 [ 08/2020 - ONGOING ] EUROPE

In collaboration with Sharvari Mhatre

Project examines images processing and visualization aided with artificial intelligence. The process uses a training set of images ( 1000 images ) to train a neural network and produce similar looking bur ‘fake’ images.

The produced images are assessed through quality, light, expression, articulation and form. The process uses machine learning algorithms, neural networks and style transfer algorithms to create a visual palette.
