EDITOR’S MESSAGE Welcome to the first issue of “Artists Down Under – Australia and New Zealand”. The artists whose work is featured in this magazine met through a common interest in photography and digital art.

Kruezenstein Castle

Every month, every member will showcase their work on their own page and four of the

artists Liz Abbott, New Zealand, George Koncz, Mary Knaggs and Ann Wehner, Australia. Hope you enjoy the first issue.

Athalie Taylor

George Koncz

They all joined the “Photoshop Artistry: Fine Art Grunge Composition Course” and later, between January 2015 and December 2016, “Awake: Living the Photo Artistic Life”, both the brainchild of the world-renowned Photoshop Guru Sebastian Michaels. It was through these two courses that strong friendships developed and grew. The inspiration for the magazine came out of a discussion, with my Awake friend Dean Hohn from Ulverstone, Tasmania, about how Australian and New Zealand Awake artists could promote their work. An idea started to blossom and very soon I found myself discussing it with Sebastian. He liked the idea and so the Aussies and Kiwis were invited to join and become part of the group. To say I am thrilled with the response is an understatement. I am ecstatic!

6

Seventy one people joined the group and sixty four of them submitted work for the magazine.

artists will have five pages each to show a selection of their art and introduce themselves to the world. Exhibitions will be promoted and reports of any upcoming events will be included too.

Innocence Lost

At the head of the news items for this month is the announcement of the first Get Together of the Australian and New Zealand Awake members being held in Melbourne from April 28 until May 2 see page 8. The diversity of styles, ideas, techniques, and genres submitted for the first issue is astounding. The images on the contents pages and this page are the work of the first four featured

NEWS Australia & New Zealand 2017 Get Together Who knew that when many of us signed up to the online course “Awake: Living the Photo Artistic Life” that we would be making friends as well as receiving support and encouragement from other artists around the world?

details are on the page devoted to this fabulous event.

Those of us who live in Australia and New Zealand thought we would take it one step further and have a get together.

We will take home with us lots of memories and probably far too many photographs!

Rose D’Azure started this off with many searching questions and hours of investigative work. She discovered that Melbourne was the preferred location and that April 28 – May 01 was the preferred time. From there the organisation hit a bit of a bumpy spot but is now back on track and all Ariana Falerni Showcase Three of our “Artists Down Under” recently had their work showcased by Ariana Falerni. http://www.arianafalerni.com/design/walldisplay-guides/fine-art/ Congratulations to Athol Murray Phillips, Dale Botha and Viki Murray, well done. Your virtual rooms, showcasing your wonderful art, look fantastic. Hopefully we will see more of our artists featured soon.

8

We will be looking at firming up existing friendships and making new friends while wandering the streets of beautiful Melbourne and the hills of the Dandenong Ranges.

We will also share chats and laughs along the way, give and gain knowledge but, most importantly, we will know who the person is behind the computer screen when we are talking to them. All details of this fabulous event may be found in the link at the end of this article. I hope you can join us!

This weekend get together is only available to members of the Awake course who live in Australia or New Zealand. http://tinyurl.com/Get-Together-Public Mary Knaggs

Australian House & Garden Article Dean Hohn was approached via Gallery Pejean in Launceston by the news writer from Australian House & Garden Magazine, asking permission to use an image he had on the Gallery Pejean website for their magazine. The person’s name and contact details were provided and Dean followed up on the request.

Dean agreed to provide the image and went on to tell them that he had several more if they would like to use them. About 3 weeks later the individual contacted Dean again and asked for a few more images and he quotes: “I would love to quote you on your work, so would it be possible to get a sentence describing your work that I can include?”

Dean elected to provide them with three more images (the four images below) and the short write up they requested. They were happy with his work and informed him they would be submitted for inclusion in the May issue, which goes on sale April 3.

entrants are judged on all three. Four entrants are awarded a month long exhibition on the LST website.

E S M I R A L D A C ATA L I N A’ S O R AT O R I O

NO TOYS IN SCHOOL, JIMMY My name is Liz Abbott. I emigrated to New Zealand in my early twenties and now live in the North Island on the beautiful North Shores of Auckland. For as long as I can remember I have always had a camera at the ready. I am fortunate now after many years of teaching to have time for taking copious photographs, weaving them together to

compose stories with digital art. This has developed into a passion and my muse, of which I am immensely grateful.

Before I leave I will share with you a quote from a writer, photographer, poet and speaker possessing many other virtues.

Among a variety of work I have enjoyed capturing of late are the antics and humour of local steampunkers and placing them into various scenes and scenarios.

“That doing our art keeps us rooted in the present moment and as long as we are there, in the now in the One Moment, we are safe.” Jan Phillips

I love the small moments in life capturing them in a single shot preserved forever.

Yes, I have married my muse.

R A I N Y D AY S A N D M O N D AY S I am a photographer who loves nature, the sea, digital art and combining all of the above into interesting and unusual works of art. I was born in a small town in New Zealand and emigrated to Australia in 1979, I have lived in Melbourne ever since.

I have always loved photography. The thought of being able to capture a mood, a eeting moment in time, an emotion or an event has always held me captive. I love being able to get up close to photograph things from different perspectives with my macro lens.

I also love being able to combine photographs to provide the viewer with fantastic and engaging works of art that stimulate the imagination.

AMELIA

ANDRE RIEU CONCERT I am a retired architect and builder and have been a keen photographer for many years. Since retiring, I have been able to spend more time on photography and love portrait photography the most, with weddings and landscapes running second. A big change in my photography life happened when I joined the AWAKE group and I can’t thank Sebastian enough for starting that group. Everyone in that group is so inspiring and it’s an absolute inspiration to see their works on display. I don’t feel as confident as many of the fan-

tastic artists in that group, but they all help to inspire and grow your own art work by just simply seeing what is achievable if you put in the effort. That AWAKE group, in my opinion, is a life changer in so many ways, and it is great that we can actually have our own “Down Under Group”.

without having to copy from other sources. Plus it gives the models a completely different format than just the studio shoot. The examples I have included are either model photos or landscapes, which I have taken and turned into an artistic piece. I just love lots of colour, which must be evident from my work.

I also belong to a group of photographers who take studio shoots on a weekly basis. This allows me to have a portfolio of beautiful models, which I can turn into works of art

I haven’t progressed to the stage of selling any of my items and am still yet to complete a website, but may not be too far from doing that.

A GUIDING LIGHT A few years ago whilst surfing the net I stumbled across a link to the Photoshop Artistry course by Sebastian Michaels, which I immediately enrolled in despite being a “newbie” to Photoshop. I completed the course and then decided to enrol in his AWAKE course. Since then I have completed Sebastian’s Black & White course, 21 days to Creative Abundance and last year I signed up for his KAIZEN group.

I have been truly awakened by these courses and I love “Living the Photo-Artistic Life”. I am so passionate about my art and being able to bring ideas which have existed only in my mind’s eye to life, for viewers to see the story as I have seen it. Creating art is my daily passion and I can lose myself in it with hours just flying by unnoticed.

I am at peace when I am creating, with the stresses of daily living just disappearing. My journal is my best friend and I have it constantly by my side to jot down an idea or two. This journey has been one utterly amazing ride. It is my goal to continue to grow as an artist and to improve my photography so that one day I can use my own photos in my digital art.
