EDITOR’S MESSAGE Welcome to our February edition of Artists Down Under.

Here we are in February already and it also being the last month of summer, how quick did that last month go, but our artists have still found the time to present their amazing art to you and this month is jammed pack full of talent. I hope you enjoy it.

Our artists are still continuing to be very successful with their achievements, having their artwork appearing in international magazines, being very successful in competitions and holding numerous exhibitions. They should all be very proud of their accomplishments.

Andrew, our favourite Photoshop Guru has another of his fabulous mini tutorials for you, this month on some of the hidden features found in the new Photoshop CC 2020.

As February is the host of Valentine’s Day, I thought I would keep in the theme of things and set our artists challenge theme for the month as “Love”. They have come up with some very romantic images for you.

One of our members of Artists Down Under, Phillipa Frederiksen, has just been awarded the CAPA Platinum Award, which is the highest level, and she is the first person in Australia to achieve this award.

Please take the time to read all about Phillipa’s achievement. Phillipa is one very talented artist.

We are delighted to present to you another of the Redlands Digital Artists “Chinese Whispers” series. This month it really shows how you can turn an image totally around.

Tell us a little about yourself and where you live.

I am from Melbourne, Australia. Have lived here my whole life, which will be half a century in 2020. I am married, have a wonderful 21 year old son, two cats, and two dogs. Up until recently I worked full time in the same workplace for 25 years. I am excited about living a semi retired life, working in a part time job I am loving.

How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry?

My interest started years ago when I discovered Deviantart admiring all sorts of artwork, and collecting/saving anything and everything I loved. This was as an admirer, I never saw it as something I could ever actually do.

About 12 months ago I was scrolling my Facebook feed and there was a sponsored ad for ‘Wield Photoshop as an Artist’. My interest was definitely piqued by the ad, and when I saw it was a free introduction course I had nothing to lose. From the first video I knew this is the type of creative outlet I have always been searching for. From there I quickly joined Fine Art Grunge, and was an Awake student by July 2019.

What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art?

Everything!

I have always been creative, inspired to share parts of me in an expressive way. Inspiration usually just comes from a thought, a stray word or two in my mind, dreams, a feeling, or overrun of emotions. External inspirations grow daily, the artists around me, from Living The Photo Artistic Life are a constant inspiration, and also push me to keep moving further, to try more and do more.

Do you have a certain approach to creating your art?

Usually I just open Photoshop and Lightroom, get a blank square canvas on my PS screen and if I have an idea I will start scrolling Lightroom for photos and elements that will work with my vision. It doesn’t usually take much time in getting started when I see an image and envisage where I can take it. If I am blocked, I usually watch a tutorial; Sebastian is very motivating to get things done and to remind us it is all about fun and play. Otherwise I just scroll all the amazing stock I have collected and see what ‘talks’ to me.

What does your art mean to you?

Art is everything to me. It is ME. I feel like I breathe it in daily. I am always processing ideas, making notes, looking for that next perfect stock image, incredible mixed media elements, or photograph to build something that I am proud of.

I hope my art talks to people, that it is relatable, but importantly I create art that I love, that is a reflection of who I am, questions I have, thoughts and feelings. It is this ever evolving journey that I am proud to be on. I feel like I can’t learn it fast enough some days, patience is not a strong suit of mine.

Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how?

Photo Artistry has changed me in so many ways. It has given me the courage to step out and share the things I love. I have taken risks, I have let go of so many toxins in my life. I care less about what others think of what I am doing and who I am.

Doing this course is more than just art, Sebastian gives tools, words of wisdom that resonate in your daily life, not just about living this amazing creative life. I am not sure I would have made such huge changes in my life if not for words that have allowed me to remember who I am and what is important.

Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from?

My mum is a huge inspiration to me, I thank her for my creative side (sorry Dad, he is the logical side of my brain). She, like me, has experimented with all sorts of art, breaking rules, doing what feels right in creating the way that is right for her. We both need to have that outlet to express our art in any way that talks to us.

I can’t forget everyone in Awake, the publications - Living the Photo Artistic Life, and Artists Downu Under, the facebook group are all so inspiring. I have never met such an amazing supportive group of people before.

Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future? What are your next steps?

I would love to be a working (selling) artist. This would be an absolute dream for me. The next steps are continuing to learn, I have just signed up for the Conceptual Fine Art Photo Artistry course with Brooke Shaden and Sebastian Michaels. This year I also want to really get to know my camera and take more of my own photos.

SOME PHOTOSHOP INSPIRATION HIDDEN PHOTOSHOP CC 2020 NEW FEATURES

This article will discuss four relatively unknown new features of the Photoshop CC 2020 release, but I love all four of them.

Rotate the angle of the Brush Tip When using the Brush tool, you can now use the left and right arrow keys to rotate the brush tip – hold down the [Shift] key to rotate in larger increments.

Use the Tilde key to switch between Brush and Eraser When using the Brush tool hold down the Tilde (~) key to temporarily change to the Eraser tool (using the same brush tip).

Previously the default option was “free” and holding down [Shift] would switch to “Constrain Proportions” mode, this was changed to the reverse where “Constrain Proportions” was the default and the [Shift] key was used to go to “free” mode.

Many people loved this change, but others hated it.

Now in PS 2020 you can choose the behaviour you like using the “chain link” icon in the Options bar of the Move tool (see Fig 1).

Zoom to Layer Contents To zoom the screen to the contents of a particular layer, hold down the [Opt/Alt] key and click the layer.

Choose Your Own “Constrain Free Transform” Behaviour In a previous release of Photoshop, Adobe changed the behaviour of the [Shift] key when using the Free Transform to change the “constrain proportions” functionality when changing the size/shape of objects.

With the icon selected (as in Fig 1) the “Constrain” behaviour is selected. The behaviour you have selected is “sticky” in that it stays that way until you change it by clicking the icon again. As before you can toggle the opposite behaviour by holding down the [Shift] key.

PHILLIPA FREDERIKSEN EFIAP MAPS CAPS/P SAPS SSAPS PSQA

Phillipa is a passionate and accomplished photographer and artist, embracing many different genres. Her local and international accomplishments have been many and varied (as witnessed by the Honours above).

A few years ago Phillipa (with another person) was instrumental in setting up a Conceptual Art Portfolio Award within the Australian Photographic Society and remains Chair of the group. The aim of this genre is to challenge only yourself, and is not a competition.

Phillipa’s latest achievement is to be awarded the CAPA Platinum Award. This is the first time a Platinum level has been awarded in Australia. Platinum is the highest level possible.

The standard for Platinum level is extremely high. The applicant must produce at least 15 works that are fully ‘exhibition ready’, should have a unique approach and display a very high level of skill in execution.

Three independent assessors, who are experienced artists and photographers, assessed the award according to the set of criteria established by APS. Over the last few years, Phillipa has mostly used her iPhone for her photography and art. For this award she took photos of the ripples in her spa, and processed them in an artistic manner with the idea of creating sculptures and ‘in situ’ works in her home.

Most of the images were printed on chiffon fabric and moulded into sculptures to represent waves on a beach, or a waterfall.

Various elements (e.g. shells, pearls) were added to sculptures to further enhance the work. Additionally the printed fabrics were used for clothing, scarves and hanging works of art in her home. Phillipa also produced a book about her concept, the process and the art. This could be used as a catalogue in an exhibition.

Phillipa is also a member of the ‘Artists Down Under’ group and many international photo artistic groups.

Her work is outstanding and she is to be congratulated on this wonderful achievement.

Tell us a little about yourself and where you live.

My home town is Brisbane, Australia.

How did you become interested/get started in Photo Artistry?

I have always loved digital art. Then one day on the net I tripped over Photo Artistry. For me, Photo Artistry opened a Pandora’s box of digital art and took me to the next level.

What inspires you or gives you inspiration to create your art?

Artists Down Under has been my number one inspiration for my art. I do like going to art shows when I have time. Tip from me go to the Queensland art gallery of modern art and don’t forget to go into the Art Shop, you can browse the art books and get some fantastic inspiration for your next art work. Another tip is leaving your credit card at home.

Do you have a certain approach to creating your art?

I always start my photo in camera raw, and then I will look at overlays. One good thing with digital art is we can doodle with layers, bring in new layers under the old layers try out new ideas. I did read in art bookshop that ideas arise in a reflexive spontaneous manner even without thinking or serious reflection {leave the credit card at home).

What does your art mean to you?

Freedom, a language of my own to express my emotions and my own ideas as I see them. My art is my stress buster in life.

Do you think since starting in Photo Artistry it has changed you and if so, how?

Photo artistry has opened a Pandora’s box of new ideas and it has given me the freedom to express the beauty of my raw emotional freedom in the form of my art.

Is there anyone that you draw inspiration from?

Our editor Pam Henderson and all the artists in Artists Down Under have raised the bar higher than the Q1 building on the Gold Coast. Thank you to all for taking me on this fantastic freedom of spontaneous ideas and allowing me to publish them in Artists Down Under.

Where do you see (or hope to see) your art taking you in the future ? What are your next steps?

The world is my oyster, I am the master of my next step, I cannot see a fence to hold my dreams in. My arms are open to this creative adventure that awaits me in the future.

I started our joint artistic endeavour for this month, and apparently gave Pam an intense challenge. Well, we are trying to grow with each one of these efforts!

Although it was a difficult art work to do from start to finish, I think the final result is one of our best yet. I’ve certainly learnt, and expanded my vision, when I look at Pam’s final art work.

She continually comes up with so many interesting elements applied in such a clever and skilled manner. This is a different style of image from what either one of us generally do in our own work, and that makes it so interesting to create.

CHARLIE O’BRIEN INTERVIEW Trish Hoskin

Being part of the Awake group and Facebook, I have come to know a little bit about Charlie and his work, and thought it would be great fun to find out more about his life and art. So, I asked Charlie to share some of his life with us all.

Trish Charlie - great to be in contact with you, and thanks for agreeing to be part of our magazine. Can you tell us a little of your background - where you live, what you did in your working life and how you came to get into digital art/photography?

Charlie For over 40 years I was a radio DJ and Program Manager. I retired officially in 2015. I live in Windsor, Ontario –same city I was born in – but left several times. As a 5 year old my dad moved the family for his job at FORD. 20 years later I returned for radio work and then had a couple stints working out of town.

In 1992 – during a lull in my career I learned the basics of the fledgling internet. I learned to build websites and a few years later I learned Photoshop. It was a much more primitive version of what we have today. I think I started on Photoshop 2. My love for photography goes back to my childhood. My dad worked in a camera store as a young man after the war. His love of it rubbed off on my brother and I. Trish From seeing pictures on your Facebook page, you have come across some pretty famous people in your time, who was your favourite and how was the interaction with them?

Charlie I met my first celebrity when I was 16 – so there have been a few along the way. My favourite might be singer Tony Orlando because he was so generous with his time and extremely genuine. I think I chatted about the biz and things in general for an hour after one of his shows. He was very grateful to our radio station for his success after helping his song Tie A Yellow Ribbon sell 4 million copies in the 70s.

Trish What gets you out of bed in the mornings? What sparks your enthusiasm with photography?

Charlie Well, getting out of bed gets harder these days! I enjoy photographing live models more these days, but for many years I loved shooting concert events. Both are very challenging and change on the fly quickly – so it’s a challenge to react to changing situations.

Trish How did you come to find Sebastian Michaels and in turn the whole world of “Awake”?

Charlie For many years I used Photoshop for work designing layout for ads and flyers. A few years back I signed up for a new course called “Photoshop Artistry” because I thought I needed to expand my artistic vision. It had come to my attention because I had taken a course about photography from Phil Steele – and he was recommending it. I learned more in that course about Photoshop than I had learned on my own over all those years. It was brand new and not even all the videos were done yet. I signed up for the AWAKE course right away and then later KAIZEN (though I have no longer stayed in it.)

Trish I have seen some really great photo shoots that you have done, do you belong to a Photography group to be able to be a part of these, or is it something you have managed to cultivate on your own?

Charlie For some reason we have a very co-operative photographic community here. Over the years we have had many local model/ photographer collaborations where as many as 20 models and 30 photographers gathered for a free afternoon. All in the spirit of learning. I have set up many of my own shoots though after meeting models along the way. I also enjoy shooting events and I volunteer for the local TedX seminar as photographer.

Trish Is there a genre you like to cover, or are you happy to go along with what comes your way?

Charlie I do like all kinds of photography – portraits, fast moving events, landscape and artistic.

Trish Which particular software packages do you use to edit/process your images, and do you have a favourite go to program?

Charlie I use Adobe Photoshop – stubbornly on CS6 – as well as Lightroom for the bulk of my editing and processing, although I use Adobe Illustrator as well as Affinity Photo. I have hundreds of Lightroom pre-sets and many actions for Photoshop. My favourites are the SEIM series as well as Topaz Studio for artistic work.

Trish Are you into selling your images, or is it simply a hobby that keeps you interested in the craft?

Charlie It is a hobby, but I have sold quite a few works mostly on FineArtAmerica. I have also done several private commissions for artistic pieces.

Trish Is it correct that you still run a radio station, and if so, how did that come about?

Charlie Yes, I run an internet oldies station called Big8Radio.com. It is Oldies songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s and it came from a Facebook radio group I moderate. Someone just posited the question: “Has anyone ever tried to do a station based on ... ”.

I thought, well let me give it a try. It is a steep learning curve, but I have had countless friends answer the call as helpers and volunteers with so many aspects of it that I can’t say it’s a ‘one-man operation.’ Sadly it’s streaming only in North America and the U.K. – sorry Mates!

She Works Magic

It’s taking a fair bit of my time away from making art – so I try and manage time as well as I can so I can do both. I love doing both and I don’t want either hobby to suffer.

I also have been taking some art classes as I have always loved to sketch.

I’ve also signed up for the new Sebastian Michaels and Brooke Shaden class at AWAKE.

Wow! Well that was so interesting to find out what makes Charlie tick and all the things he is involved in. Some of his earlier photos of some of the fantastic groups we have known and loved – Beatles, Beach Boys, etc. are terrific and would love to see some come out of Charlie’s archives. WATER FROM ART

by Dean Hohn As many of you will know, my “WHY”, is using my art to support the Care for Africa Foundation to drill fresh water wells in the 6 villages it supports in the Tarime District of Tanzania. These villages are off the tourist route and therefore received no form of aid until the Care For Africa Foundation heard about their plight and decided to do something to help.

It was the middle of June 2016 when a friend and fellow photographer posted some of her designs on Facebook that the idea of using my art for designs on clothing and scarves hit me. I asked her if she would mind if I copied the idea, of using my art on clothing and she said no.

The end of June 2016 I launched my Nuna Collection, with designs originating from my rock art that dated back to the Nuna Era. As a designer I receive a commission of 10% for each piece that is sold and I in turn donate all proceeds to the Care For Africa Foundation.

My designs have evolved over time and my latest designs are more contemporary and varied. You can view the collection at

Helping Women with Endometriosis 50% of profit donated to endometriosis research

When I first heard about endometriosis I felt a deep compassion and need to do what I could to help.

Women with endometriosis suffer debilitating pain, disruptive symptoms and often endure multiple operations simply to function normally. Few people are patient when listening to descriptions of pain, symptoms or illness. This can have the effect of silencing people who are ill.

My compassion inspires my photoart which I show in presentations to raise awareness. I joined Awake to teach me advanced Photoshop skills, specifically to expand my photoartistic skills to create imaginative and dramatic images.

My photoart opens dialogue enabling freer expression of hidden feelings, experiences too private to mention in ordinary conversation. I create photoart inspired by the concerns of women with endometriosis. Several women have said that the process of imaging their suffering has helped them to face their pain and illness. There is immense strength in being heard. I want my photoart to become visual screams!!

26 women with endometriosis have told me about their experiences. They spoke to me about their concerns and collaborated during the photo session. We explored meanings of body, ideas of self and impacts of illness together, agreeing which ideas we would explore photographically.

My photos are often carefully arranged, but that doesn’t mean they are fake. They represent the personal truth and experiences of 26 women with endometriosis. These women are remembering and acting out their OWN experiences. They choose their own stance and facial expression.

Women with endometriosis are the only people who truly know what endometriosis FEELS like.

Unfortunately endometriosis is relatively common; an estimated 1 in 10 women living with endometriosis, being over 175,000,000 women worldwide! And an estimated 500,000 women in Australia! Their experiences are heartbreaking. Regular illness and debilitating pain result in missed education and poor career opportunities leaving them women vulnerable to poverty.
