St. Pete Beach is one of the area’s older beach towns, but it is vibrant and has a great appeal with a variety of things to do like fishing, shopping, great hotels, and of course, the beach. Often it is confused with the city of St. Petersburg which is in location more to the east.

Both are a popular area for snowbirds in the winter months, but locals really enjoy St. Pete beach year-round for its authenticity.

If you live on Florida’s gorgeous Gulf Shore, you’re aware of how fantastic a day at the beach can be. You are bathed in warm sunshine. The soft sand between your toes is relaxing. You breathe in the salty fresh air that is not only tranquil but also invigorating to the senses. And yes, the sparkles on the water are a sight to behold. All of those, however, are passive sensations to a degree. There’s something else you can do that is bound to fuel your energy and deliver an oceanic intoxication like few other activities can. It’s windsurfing, and if you haven’t tried it, you are truly missing out.

Imagine the combination of a surfboard and a sail from a sailboat. In the simplest of terms, that’s what you get when you climb on board for a windsurfing excursion. Britt Viehman, owner of North Beach Windsurfing in St. Petersburg, says he got addicted to the sport during his freshman year in college and hasn’t given it up since. “The sport took a big increase in the 1980s and 90s, then dwindled down a bit. It’s now coming back in a big way. The gear has gotten a lot better, boards got wider, so it became easier to do, and it requires less muscle, which makes it more enjoyable for the novice windsurfer.”

St. Pete Beach is a great location to windsurf. There are several windsurfing camps to learn how to have an awesome adventure with this water sport. You will need some physical stamina for this though as the wind and water can be arduous.

Keep in mind that you can also sail on almost any lake, river, or ocean. So it’s the type of sailing that you can take with you wherever you go! The windsurfing sport offers a variety of

Hurricane Season Part of the Florida Lifestyle

June 1 marks the beginning of hurricane season. With the beginning of the season off to an extremely hot start, experts predict that there will be an active season this year. The best suggestion for this time every year is to prepare.

Many of us in the central area of the west coast of Florida have not experienced the devastating impacts even a storm can bring. Although, if you have lived in the area for quite some time, you know that when the warnings are issued, there needs to be a plan in place.

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina was the most expensive hurricane the state has encountered. The insured losses were calculated to be $41 billion. This has become a problem for Floridians since many insurance companies are pulling out of Florida and not offering homeowner’s insurance. The average Florida homeowners pays an annual rate of $10,996 which is comparable to taxes in some states. While we don’t pay any state tax here, our

homeowner’s insurance might make up for it.

Another aspect to keep in mind is flood insurance. Make sure to check with your insurance company if you have it or not especially if you are located in a flood zone. 60% of homeowners don’t carry separate flood insurance and over 10% erroneously believe that it’s included in their policy.

Getting back to some facts, “nuisance flooding” is becoming more active and most of us do experience this during storm season. This type of flooding has increased from 300 to 900 percent since the 1960s. Nuisance flooding often occurs at high tide and comes from water in low-lying areas of roads or can occur when storm water systems become overwhelmed. Most of the time nuisance flooding is not damaging

but makes it difficult to get around.

Several cities are experiencing it 10 to 20 additional days per year, evoking road closures, overwhelmed storm drains, and compromised infrastructure and water quality. Unfortunately, it is projected that a majority of coastal communities will experience 30 days of tidal flooding by 2050.

Because tornadoes are also a concern whenever there is any type of storm, it is important to have your home secured for the season. Securing and putting away items out in the lanai and yard are an easy way to start preparing. Additionally, pets need to be part of the schematics of hurricane preparedness. Know where the location is for a shelter that will be open for your furry friend should you need to get to one. Medications for you and your pets are essential to have readily

Hurricane preparedness means planning. You also need to begin to collect supplies. Start stocking up on gallons of water now, or refilling water bottles now. Pets are part of the family, so don’t forget to have food and supplies set aside for them too!

Another factor to consider is safe proofing your home for hurricanes and storms. Have your roof inspected for leaks or loose shingles. If you have a good number of sliding doors and windows, as most of us do, consider hurricane screens. Screens are a more cost-effective way to protect your homes as opposed to hurricane shutters. Screens can protect up to 188 mph winds and without them, you can lose more than just the glass. Water damage is a significant factor in storms.

Another tip is to make sure you have gas in your vehicles. Consider having at least a half-full tank of gas in your vehicle throughout the summer. The reason is, you won’t panic when everyone else has to head to the gas station when there is a hurricane warning. It’s also a good idea to keep a small toolkit in your trunk with a few blankets.

Lastly, create an emergency contact list. This is good to have even if there is no hurricane. Being safe is key during this time of year. Since we all chose to live here along the Gulf Shores of Florida, please prepare. This area has a many beautiful landscapes but comes equipped with hurricanes and storms. Do all the necessary steps for being safe and you will weather any storm safely.

In the Tampa Bay area this time of year, tarpon take center stage with redfish a close second in terms of popularity but one of the fish that gets forgotten about is the black drum.

The black drum is in the sciaenidae family of fish, along with the red drum and speckled trout to name a few. What they have in common is the ability to drum, to call their mate.

Some people may frown upon the black drum but in actuality the smaller drum (puppy drum) are good table fair and the larger ones are great tackle testers. Black drum have to be 14-24 inches to keep in the Tampa Bay area. Around 4-7lb black drum are actually good to eat with very white flaky meat but once the start getting larger their meat gets tough and not so good. This is where the sport of catching and releasing large black drum becomes fun. Typically 20-50lb drum are caught in Tampa Bay with some fish even larger than that. These fish can reach over 100lbs and can travel in small to very large schools of fish. They can be caught all year, around the docks, bridge pilings, oyster mounds, flats and sand bar edges.

Some of the most exciting black drum fishing happens at the beginning of the year between January and March depending on the water temperature, where large schools of black drum enter Tampa Bay for

spawning. This is when you will see schools of them going around in circles and drumming. They will also run the edges of the flats or sand bars which is a blast also to sight fish and cast to. A good spinning rod setup that can handle 20-50lb fish is what will be needed. Live large shrimp will work but a ¼-3/8 oz jig head with a Saltwater Assassin shrimp or Lit’l P & V in brown glass minnow or new penny colors with some Pro-Cure shrimp bait gel to add scent will work. This pattern at the mouth of the bay just inside the Skyway bridge and 275 leading up to it will not last long.

Turtle Nesting Season

Because Florida is a place for the endangered and threatened sea turtles of the world, we need to take precautions when encountering them. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, sea turtles nest on our beaches, forage for food in our estuaries, and all too often wash-up dead on our shoreline. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission staff are dedicated to protecting sea turtles in Florida and learning as much as possible about the biology and life history of these elusive animals.

All sea turtles found in Florida are protected under state statutes. Five species of sea turtles are found swimming in Florida’s waters and nesting on Florida’s beaches. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute coordinates nesting beach survey programs around the state.

Mote Aquarium is a strong advocate to help promote the safety for the sea turtles. They comb the beaches every year to look for and monitor

nests during the season. FWRI staff members coordinate the Florida Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network (FLSTSSN), which is responsible for gathering data on dead or debilitated (i.e., stranded) sea turtles found in Florida. Debilitated turtles are rescued and transported to rehabilitation facilities.

Combined with the efforts of FWRI marine turtle program staff and the FLTSSN, research is conducted on the distribution, abundance, life histories, ecology, migrations, and threats to marine turtles in Florida and then further to the western Atlantic and Caribbean waters. Illegal harvesting, pollutions and the destroying of habitat, are only some of the things sea turtles must fight against to stay alive. Research for all of these toxins are being researched to keep the population survival rate up.

Lisa Doherty At her Hernando Beach studio, Lisa Doherty creates her portraits of living animals of the Gulf Shore. Originally, Doherty grew up on Cape Cod and spent 20 years there before moving to Maine with her husband and son. She has been enjoying the Gulf Shore area for the past six getting inspiration from its enveloping nature.

During her early years, if there was an opportunity to take an art class she’d sign up. Doherty attended a high school with an extensive and varied art

program and earned her BFA from the school of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning at the University of Cincinnati.

She stepped away from art for twenty-eight years and then finally picked up a pencil again. “I was rusty,” she claimed, “but I decided on a few goals for myself and I was determined to stick to them.

First, I decided that I was going to create art that I loved, which meant it would be opposite to what art schools had required of me. I love almost scientific

detailing. I love the brush strokes of paint, so I decided to somehow combine the two.”

It is obvious that Doherty has a love for nature and wildlife. Her experience living in New England

inspired her with its forests, mountains, and seashores. She and her son loved to go on nature hikes which turned into treasure hunts. Whether it was in the woods or beach combing, she has been

inspired by the world around her.

Doherty mostly combines watercolor and museum quality-colored pencils.

This combination allows her to get that flow of paint as well as the realistic detailing bringing life to her portraits.

She gets inspiration from a wide variety of artists: abstract, illustrative, oil painters, and sculptors. She uses a “sort of contemporary spin” on the classic art of naturalists and wildlife artists. She has fully inspired by works

as early as Albrecht Dürer, to the landscapes of the Naturalist Movement, the brush stroked light captured by Sargent, ornithologists like Audubon and Fuertes, the botanicalstudies of Beatrix Potter, as well as flipping through old field guides and bird identification books.

Her artwork reflects the study of Eastern North America from Maine to Florida. “I’ve since brushed off the rust and held true to the promises I made to myself when I “began again”, she said. Visit her online shop at www.
