Tranquility says it all. There is nothing quite as magical as that first breath of sea air, the lingering warmth of the sun on your face, nor the feeling you get when you first sink your toes in the sand. What are you waiting for? Put on those flip-flops and head for the beach! Florida was deemed “The Sunshine State” in 1970, and to this day, it still holds true to its name. With the sun shining and the waves rolling in, Florida’s long stretches of coastline are immeasurably beautiful. Believe it or not, most people do not realize how large the state is, let alone the fact that Florida holds the title for having more miles of coastline (over 1300 miles) than any eastern state. No matter what type of getaway you’re looking for, Florida is sure to have a beach getaway that seems tailored to your desires. From tranquility to a lively “Jimmy Buffet style” atmosphere, Florida has multiple choices for you to enjoy. It has quickly become known for having the best beaches for any occasion.

With an abundance of beach getaways that embrace nonstop fun and adventure, here is some insight into some of the best places to recharge. Siesta Key Imagine for a moment that you are at the beach, your toes encased in the softest sand you could imagine. No shells hurting your toes, you can sink in this velvety sand and let everything else around you fade. As you open your eyes and take your first glimpse of the sand beneath your feet, you realize it is snow-white. It seems more like a dream than reality, but these amazing beaches actually exist in Siesta Key. Siesta Key is known for having beautiful white sand along the coastline. This sand is far different from others because it is almost entirely made of finely ground quartz crystal. For this reason, many people believe that the beaches of Siesta Key have metaphysical healing powers, and it has become quite a magical place to recharge both mentally and physically. While some people are skeptical of the healing properties of quartz crystal, many have found that a visit to this beach has left them feeling more energized and less sore than in other places. If you’re looking for a peaceful place to go, Siesta Key has many great options. It is family-friendly and generally not very crowded in the off-season. By heading just a few blocks toward Siesta Key Village, you will find several dining facilities and places to shop. There are often many options for nighttime entertainment as well. If you’re looking to barbeque, several locations offer grilling stations and all you need to bring along is charcoal, food, and a very good appetite. Marco Island Whether you are looking for a lively, buzzing atmosphere or a calm serene getaway, Marco Island has some perfect spots for your beach retreat.

This beautiful island sits roughly 20 miles off the coast of Naples and can be reached by crossing one of two available bridges. The beaches on Marco Island are a rare combination of upscale resorts with lively streets and calm undisturbed habitats resting off the coast. This factor makes the beaches of Marco Island truly unique and captivating for people of all lifestyles. If you simply adore seafood, the restaurants here have you covered! They all offer various mouth-watering foods that will have you begging for more. It’s hard to go wrong with any of the dining options on Marco Island. As far as the beaches go, Marco Island is known for having some of the cleanest beaches around. Many claim that it has the best beaches along the Gulf Coast. If you are looking to dive into some wilderness, immerse yourself in the scenery, collect seashells, go kayaking, or even all the above, Tigertail Beach Park in Marco Island is the place for you. At Tigertail you will find all the best ways to recharge with nature and make the most of your beach getaway. However, if the naturistic life is not exactly your scene, don’t fret. South Marco Beach has much to offer as well. From fancy condos and resorts to sunbathing areas and ample room to swim, these beaches are simply perfect for families and adults looking for a spacious beach spot as well. Some resorts offer spa areas as well as adult-only entertainment. One thing you simply will not find at Marco Island is anywhere to grill. Bringing your own grill or having any open fires on Marco Island is prohibited. Clearwater Beach Sitting on the west central coast of Florida in Pinellas County is a beautiful vacation spot called Clearwater Beach. The sands here are dazzlingly white and the water is a beautiful shade of turquoise.

With so many restaurants along the beach, you won’t have to venture far from your little dose of paradise to get some amazing food. However, if you’re searching for a place to grill out, Clearwater is not ideal for you. Grilling, or having any open flame here is punishable by law. The authorities go above and beyond to protect the beautiful white sand from getting tarnished. There are many things to do at Clearwater Beach. If you love animals or have children that do, visiting the Clearwater Marine Aquarium is a must! Here you will see various animals that have been rescued. If you’re searching for something seemingly out of a movie, Pier 60 is a definite must. It is simply magical to visit. Many people claim it has the best views of the sunset, and it has become a great place for fishermen. The lights along the pier make for a beautiful, almost magical nighttime stroll.

Your eyes can listen Don’t be scared to be a little adventurous, the Clearwater Beaches have the perfect conditions for jet skiing, parasailing, and snorkeling. You can also enjoy several dry activities such as rollerblading, biking, playing volleyball, and so much more. With so much to do, and such beautiful scenery, Clearwater Beach is an ideal spot for many occasions! Islamorada In Monroe County, Florida, between Key Largo and Marathon, resides an island paradise called Islamorada. Whether you are looking to relax, have some family fun, or have a romantic getaway, Islamorada is a wonderful place.

Panama City Beach Panama City Beach is located in Bay County, Florida, but most people simply refer to all the Panama Beaches as being in Panama City. It has become quite the sensation and is extremely lively. There is never a dull moment at Panama City Beach! Most beaches in Panama City are alcohol friendly, except in the month of March. If you want to go in peak season when everything is bustling, head out there during Spring Break, and live it up.

If you prefer things a tad bit milder than that, it is wise not to book anything around the Spring Break timeframe, usually happening in the month of March. There are several restaurants and bars within walking distance of most of the hotels and resorts. Walking The Strip, a long stretch of shops and attractions

close to the shoreline, is also one of the main attractions for vacationers. Seeing the streets lit up at night and listening to the waves crash around you is simply magical. There is no shortage of options for oceanfront eating, and even more variety if you’re willing to drive a little to get there. With so many restaurants, shops, and activities, it is truly no surprise Panama City Beach has such an outstanding record for being one of the best beaches in Florida. Caladesi Island State Park Caladesi Island State Park, located in close proximity to Clearwater Beach Resorts, is the perfect spot for anyone wanting to get away and feel as if they are on their own little island for a few hours. In order to reach Caladesi Island State Park, you will need to

Although there are not many public beaches in the area, other isolated spots can be reached via boat or kayak for an unforgettable experience. If you love adventure and being on the water, this route is right up your alley. However, if you’re looking for a cozy spot right on the beach, you may wish to consider booking a reservation with an oceanfront resort. This will ensure that you get all the perks of the beach at half the effort it takes to get there. As an added bonus, there are several places to grab some delicious food along the coastline.

Once you arrive, you will be able to enjoy all the beauty of an untouched beach. Although the ferry only allows you a maximum of a four hour stay, there is much to do on the island such as: swimming, hiking, collecting shells, paddling, fishing, and more. If you wish for more time on this island paradise, you may wish to bring in your own boat and dock at the marina for a night or two.

Since this is a State Park, you cannot bring along pets or alcohol, but the views are definitely worth it. If you want to grill out, there are several spots available for you to use. Generally, these areas will have a picnic table and grill ready and waiting on you. These do come at a first come first serve basis unless you rent one of the two available

One of the highlights of this park is that it is home to 19th Century history. You will find canons along certain routes and alot of history to uncover. At one time the area was inhabited by Tobobaga Indians and during WWII, the island was used for a bombing range that was a subspot for MacDill Field. Fort De Soto Park also can be a great spot for shelling and snorkeling. There is also a souvenir shop, What are you waiting for? Anna Maria Island If you’re looking for a laid-back biking adventure where you can enjoy nature and the simplicities of island life, check out Anna Maria Island. Biking is the preferred form of transportation along the sevenmile strip of sandy white beaches. Since the beaches of Anna Maria are the home to nesting turtles, a protected species, biking on the actual beach is not allowed. However, the main road that runs through the island has a bicycle lane. If you’re just visiting or new in town and don’t have a bicycle yet- don’t worry! Anna Maria Island has several businesses that offer bicycle rentals, including the popular Beach Bums. Sanibel Island Recognized as the “Seashell Capital of the World” because more than 400 types of seashells can

be found along the 15 miles of beach, Sanibel Island is also a great place to go bicycling. Over 25 miles of paths are designed for biking and hiking throughout the island, including the historical Sanibel Heritage Trail. Be sure to hit the trail just before dusk to catch one of Sanibel Island’s illustrious sunsets! Cedar Key There are no clearly defined bike trails in Cedar Key, but with a total circumference of 13 miles, biking is the favored method of transportation for locals and tourists alike in this quaint little fishing village. Fishing and kayaking are also common ways to pass the time in Cedar Key. Cedar Key is rich in history. You can explore the 1850s Island House Hotel and other old buildings on Old Main Street, peruse the Cedar Key Cemetery, also built in the late 1800s, nearby Cemetery Point Boardwalk and Park, and bike or walk the Railroad Trestle Nature Trail. If you want to dig deeper into Cedar Key’s history, you can visit one of the town’s two museums: Cedar Key Museum

State Park, which was visited by “John of the Mountains” Muir, and the Cedar Key Historical Society Museum. There are also designated biking trails at the Lower Suwanee National Wildlife Refuge, which includes the archaeological site, Shell Mound. And if you don’t have a bike, Cedar Key Adventures has you covered! They also offer golf cart and kayak rentals. St Joseph’s Peninsula Located along the Forgotten Coast, T.H. Stone Memorial St. Joseph Peninsula State Park, or St. Joseph’s Peninsula for short, is one of the best state parks in America and home to one of the nation’s top-ranked beaches. The State Park is a wildlife retreat featuring over 240 bird species, three species of sea turtles, and the endangered St. Andrews beach mouse. In addition to the wildlife, you can survey the 35-foot-high dunes, majestic sunrises, and sunsets. Take a break from biking, and observe even more wildlife

on the Maritime Hammock Trail, which can be hiked in under an hour. You can also go snorkeling or scalloping in the bay. If you want to stay a while, the family-friendly park has over 100 campsites to camp on, as well as eight cabins. Key West Key West is the southernmost point of the United States. Since there is limited parking space on the four square miles of the island, biking is the more common mode of transportation. You can bike the main roads or ride the Smathers Beach trail, part of the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail. Besides taking in the beautiful sights of nature and the beaches, you can also navigate the boutiques and galleries of Duval Street. Depending on when you

visit, you may be able to catch one of the monthly walking art tours. History buffs will appreciate visiting the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum or the Key West Cemetery. Or, if you’re feeling super adventurous, try one of the Original Ghost Tours of Key West! And if you need a bike, Bike Man Bike Rentals is the best on the island!

Suncoast Trail The Suncoast Trail runs 42 miles along the Suncoast Parkway and winds through various agricultural, natural, and suburban areas. There are multiple trail access and parking points. Since the trail does parallel the Parkway, it’s not your typical nature ride. However, this trail is perfect for serious bikers who want to work on building stamina and speed. Suncoast Trail is one of the longest continuous bike trails in the state. And although it is right along the parkway, plenty of stops exist to enjoy nature. These include the Jay B. Starkey Wilderness Preserve and Trail, Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area, Weeki Wachee Springs State Park, and Crews Lake Wilderness Park. Clearwater Memorial Causeway Trail The Clearwater Memorial Causeway Trail is a 3.5-mile trail across the Memorial

Causeway Bridge. The wide trail sticks close to the water and leads to Clearwater Beach. There are also several overlooks along the trail for bikers to enjoy the beautiful views of Clearwater Bay. North Bay Trail The North Bay Trail is a 6-mile asphalt and concrete trail that starts in St. Petersburg and connects to the scenic Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail. Along the trail, you can observe the magnificent homes of the Old Northeast neighborhood, ride parallel to 1st Street, and intersect with the Duke Energy Trail. There are also many access points to parks along the North Bay Trail, including Progress Energy Park, Demens Landing Park, North and South Straub Park, Vinoy Park, Northshore Park, Gizella Kopsick Arboretum, Flora Wylie Park, Coffee Pot Bayou Park and Rio Vista Park. Tampa Riverwalk This almost three-mile trail takes about 50 minutes to walk and less time to bike, depending on your speed. However, with so much to see and do along the popular pathway, it will surely take you a little longer to bike it end to end! The Riverwalk in downtown Tampa includes access to Cotanchobee Fort Brooke Park, a memorial to fallen soldiers, first responders, and Tampa’s First People, and a playground. Also accessible are the Kennedy Boulevard Plaza, which leads to the Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park and Waterworks Park. Other nearby venues include the Tampa Bay History Center, Tampa Museum of Art, Henry B. Plant Museum and the Tampa Convention Center. San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park You can find some of the area’s best offroad biking trails at San Felasco, in addition

to striking scenery and abundant wildlife and tree species. The park has 18 natural communities, including bobcats, white-tailed deer, and champion trees. San Felasco boasts 20 miles of single-track biking trails; just watch out for the intersecting horse trails! Rental bikes are not available at the park. Because of the remote location of most of the trails, it’s recommended to bring an air pump and replacement tube when biking these trails. Alafia River State Park Alafia River State Park is one of more than 20 trails in the state that offers mountain biking and is an IMBAdesignated “Epic Trail.” There are 20 miles of trails divided into four categories ranging from basic to more complex. The trails are built over former mining grounds. The black loop features steep climbs, drops, and rock ridges, and the green loop is more suitable for beginning bikers and families. A full-service bike shop on-site offers rentals, repairs, and biking lessons. In addition to biking, visitors to Alafia can enjoy canoeing and fishing on the South

Withlacoochee State Forest

Chinsegut Wildlife and Environmental Area

This 46-mile-long trail is one of the longest paved trails in the state, runs through the Withlacoochee State Forest and crosses through creek bottoms, abandoned rock mines, and ravines. This trail is part of the Florida Greenways and Trail System and a designated National Recreational Trail.

The 850 acres of the Chinsegut Wildlife and Environmental Area feature the Chinsegut Conservation Center and the Big Pine Tract, which offers several hiking and biking trails. You can observe several wildlife species along the trails, including deer, sandhill cranes, and red-headed woodpeckers. You can also take the Prarie-to-Pines trail, loop around May’s Prairie’s freshwater marsh, and explore the 1800s Bishop Homestead Site.

The almost fifty miles of single-track trails are primarily flat but vary in length. The trails run through small towns, ranches and natural communities. There are mile markers along the trail, and an equestrian trail runs parallel to portions of the paved trail. Besides biking, visitors to Withlacoochee can enjoy

St. Petersburg Mecca for the Fishing Enthusiast

Sure, there is a wide variety of things to do in St. Petersburg. We have multiple museums including the world-famous Dali Museum along with plenty of beautiful white sand beaches including Fort De Soto, which has been ranked the #1 beach nationally in the past and #7 for its camping sites. Also, the nightlife in downtown St. Petersburg is unmatched with waterfront views and multiple bars, clubs and eateries, all within walking distance of each other. During the day there are multiple shops of various kinds for everyone’s interests, from high-end boutiques to smoke shops downtown has it all. Let’s not forget about our newly reconstructed 92-million-dollar downtown waterfront pier, which extends out 3000 feet into Tampa Bay and includes beach access, a splash pad, a park, bistros, a museum, market place, cafes, bar and grilles, gear, and gift shop along with a fishing deck and bait shop. There is plenty to do in St. Petersburg, but one of the best experiences is our fishery. A quite large redfish makes a happy fisherman

There is a wide variety of fish to catch in our area, there is something for everyone! Some of the species available in our area include Snook, Redfish, Trout, Sheepshead, Tarpon, Pompano, Permit, Mackerel, King Mackerel, Ladyfish, Jack Crevalle, Grouper, Goliath Grouper, Red Snapper, Mangrove Snapper, Cobia, Hogfish, Triple Tail, Flounder and a variety of sharks to name a few. Next store to the St. Pete Pier is St. Petersburg Municipal Marina and Demens Landing Park. This is where I launch my 23.5’ bay boat with a 2023 Yamaha 250 SHO outboard to guide people to this wonderful fishery we call Tampa Bay. The great thing about this area, there are plenty of places to catch fish with or without a boat. The pier and Demens Landing Park, along with many miles of seawalls, multiple piers and bridges in this area offer land fishing, where you can catch a sheepshead or a mangrove snapper dinner along with a possible redfish, snook or trout. The

marina has live shrimp and the pier has a variety of frozen bait that you can use to fish these areas. You will want to fish along the sea walls, docks, and along the pilings of the piers and bridges. An all-around good setup for inshore fishing would be a 7’ to 7’6” medium pole with a size 3000-4000 reel loaded with 15lb braided line, 4 feet of 25-30lb Seaguar fluorocarbon leader, and a 1/0 circle hook. When using shrimp, I like to hook it through the shell of the head being careful not to hit the black dots which will kill it but I will pinch the tail off which will not kill it but will create scent around your bait. This is the best of both worlds because you will have movement and scent at the same time, which both attract fish to bite.

Sheepshead catch

Many of the parks and areas near our bridges like the Skyway Bridge and Gandy Bridge, offer good wade fishing opportunities, but be careful to shuffle your feet when walking so you do not step onto a stingray. I would use the same setup for wade fishing, opting for a longer pole to cast farther. The more area you cover by fan casting the better your odds are. I would use artificials or shrimp while wade fishing. For the artificials, I would try both, a 1/8 oz jig head or 1/4oz 3/0-4/0 owner twist lock hook with 3-4” paddle tails and artificial shrimp. I like using Saltwater Assassin’s Sea shad in sugar and spice and shrimp in molting or papa smurf colors. Additionally, if you get a kayak or rent a boat you can fish the many mangrove tree-lined grass flats our Freshwater Snook

area offers. One of the best baits that you can catch is scaled sardines. This is the caviar of inshore fishing. These baits are very frisky and have very white sides which flash when they swim and the sun hits them. Redfish and especially snook are the two favorite inshore fish I love to target, leaning towards snook just slightly. Redfish have a bulldog attitude, like “I’m not giving up” all the way to the boat. The snook is an ambush predator that will make a loud slap noise at the top of the water when it crushes your bait. Then it might jump out of the water or just come to the top and give a gill-rattling head shake to try to throw the hook!! Look for both fish to be anywhere such as under the mangroves to 70 feet out from the mangroves as long as there is good live grass or an oyster mound. Both of those attributes hold bait which in turn attracts fish. Moving water is the key to a good bite. You can catch some on a slack tide but once that water starts moving at about .7 knots the bite usually will turn on. The tide will move the bait and the fish will position themselves to intercept with the least amount of effort. So sometimes a 2 foot closer cast to a mangrove or oyster mound could make the difference of whether or not you get the hit. So, practice up on your casting skills, if you need to, and make a trip to St. Petersburg, a fisherman’s paradise. This article was written by Capt. Prepare and Plan to Stay Safe this Season

Living here along the gulf shores of West Florida, you must make a commitment to prepare for the annual hurricane season. The most important thing to know is that hurricanes can develop rapidly and without a plan in place, you can put yourself in the path of danger. Hurricane season officially begins June 1st, but honestly, even a huge storm in Florida can be just as devastating. Most importantly, being prepared is to know your evacuation route for your area. You do not have to live right at the water’s edge here to have to evacuate. Flooding can happen just about anywhere and take into consideration that winds can be devastating. You

and your family need to plan a “safe” meeting place. This is usually a defined place out of the area where the entire family knows where to meet in case of evacuation. Power lines, trees, and other debris can obstruct your escape from a hurricane. Hurricane preparedness means planning. You also need to begin to collect supplies. Start stocking up on gallons of water now, or refilling water bottles now. It’s a good habit to do this now since the store shelves become bare once the notification of a hurricane is mentioned. Keep a large plastic bin set aside for your hurricane essentials like flashlights, batteries, medication lists, and a holder for important

documents and valuables. Pets are part of the family, so don’t forget to have food and supplies set aside for them too! Having a designated place within your home selected for safety is also a must. Tornadoes can be a deadly surprise. Prepare your family to know where the safety location is. It should be a space away from doors and windows, preferably in the center and most stable area of your home. Also make sure that you know how to turn off your water, gas, and electricity if needed. Another factor to consider is safe proofing your home for hurricanes and storms. Have your roof inspected for leaks or loose shingles. If you have a good number of sliding doors and windows, as most of us do, consider hurricane screens. Screens are a more cost-

effective way to protect your homes as opposed to hurricane shutters. Screens can protect up to 188 mph winds and without them, you can lose more than just the glass. Water damage is a significant factor in storms. If your home was built before 1994, have it inspected for hurricane safety points. Homes built between 1994 and 2001 should be inspected although these homes will be more structurally sound than older ones. Another tip to keep in mind is to make sure you have gas in your vehicles. Consider having at least a half-full tank of gas in your vehicle throughout the summer. The reason is, you won’t panic when everyone else has to head to the gas station when there is a hurricane warning. It’s also a good idea to keep a small toolkit in your trunk with a few blankets.

Lastly, create an emergency contact list. This is good to have even if there is no hurricane. Being safe is key during this time of year. Since we all chose to live here along the Gulf Shores of Florida, please prepare! This area has a many beautiful landscapes but comes equipped with hurricanes and storms. Over-the-Top BBQ Burgers

Berry Ice Cream Pie

1 1/2 lbs sirloin or organic grass fed beef

1 ready to fill graham cracker pie crust

1/2 small red onion, chopped

2 pints vanilla ice cream (softened)

2-3 garlic cloves minced

1 pint of strawberry ice cream (softened)

1/2 tsp mesquite-liquid smoke

1 cup blueberries

4 tsp Worcestershire sauce

1 cup strawberries (sliced)

2 tsp hot sauce 1/4 lb cheddar cheese

1. In a bowl, combine 1 pint of vanilla ice cream with Kool Aid mix, and stir well. Spread blue ice cream over the crust, and freeze for 15 minutes.

1. Mix onion and garlic the add the beef and mix together.

2. Top blue layer with fresh blueberries, then cover with the remaining vanilla ice cream.

2 tbsp brown sugar

2. In another bowl mix the mesquite flavored liquid smoke, Worcestershire sauce and brown sugar. 3. Add the mixture to the meat and combine the ingredients. 4. Make 4 thick patties. 5. Cook for about 5 minutes on each side, depending on your liking. Tops with cheese, lettuce and tomato and serve on your favorite roll.

3. Return to freezer for 15 minutes. 4. Top the vanilla layer with sliced strawberries, and spread strawberry ice cream on top. 5. Return to freezer until completely frozen. 6. Garnish with more berries and add sprinkles.

detailed and carefully mastered. When asked what she specialized in, she easily answered, “I don’t really specialize in any one media. I’m a ‘Jack of All Trades’. I sketch, paint with watercolors, oils, and spray paints. I also photograph underwater, this beautiful land of our country, and sculpt in clay.”

Starsha also works in resin and mold making, which are some of the pieces you see on these pages of sea creatures and the seas. Some of her pieces are so intricate. Other pieces that pop are her Bioluminesce (Glow in the Dark) resins. Starsha said that she has worked very hard to become an artist. “It’s not easy to be a little creator, and it took years of working sometimes more than full time at a day job so that I could do art in the evenings. Eventually, I was able to go part-time. It wasn’t until year 5 that I was able to become a full-time artist! I am so blessed to have made it,” says Starsha. “You can do it.”

People often ask me how I create my art. The fact is, there is no simple answer, it is not an equation where A plus B equals art. My art is a complex compilation of my life experiences. Part of it is my training, I have formally studied painting, design, and photography. Obviously, this was a great foundation, but that is only where I learned the tools of the trade. And although these tools are valuable, they do not create art. You have to combine the tools with life experiences. I have a wide range of experiences from teaching to designing book covers and even creating art for NASA. In addition, the places I have lived have an effect on my art. The art I created in New York has a very different aesthetic than the art that I create

the peak season, you should expect to pay more for it. The peak vacation season is between June and September in colder-weather climates in the Northern Hemisphere. In colder-weather climates in the Southern Hemisphere, most people vacation between November and February. For tropical climates such as Florida or Mexico, the high tourist season generally runs from November to April. Lido Key

The Holiday Inn on Lido Key is an icon of the area of Sarasota. Situated right on the Gulf, it is one of the older hotels on the strip that had that “old time” vacation feel. Free snacks for guests were available in the lobby and the comfortable décor gave you that “nostalgic” feel. But don’t wait to visit here! This hotel will be undergoing renovations. The restaurant that was on the top floor had fantastic Gulf views while you had your morning breakfast. The plan is to make vacation villas on that floor! Revolving doors in the front entrance will also be removed along with the majority of the décor. Either way, it was an enjoyable feeling at this hotel for family vacationers and will surely be a new experience for new vacationers. As with all good things, sometimes we have to say goodbye to the old and in with the new. Be sure to stop in and see it before it changes!
