Tampa’s Palace Picture a time when going out for a night in town was dressing up in the hottest fashion and seeing the popular film at the local theater. Greta Garbo, Gloria Swanson, Tom Mix, Norma Talmadge, Rudolph Valentino, Douglas Fairbanks Sr., John Barrymore, and “Little Mary” Pickford were the stars on the big screen. What people don’t know is that besides competition for an Oscar, there was a competition between movies studios. It was the movie studio’s goal for its film to be shown in the most elegant theater. It was at this time, after World War I, that contemporary, surrealism and deco art bloomed during the 1920s. This is when John Eberson, an architect from Chicago, who ran a plastering

Meet Matt. Since 1993 he has performed in Sarasota as a violinist and Soloist. Performances include first violinist for the Venice Symphony and with The Pops Orchestra of Sarasota, Southwest Florida Symphony, Florida Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestras, and resident violinist for St. Martha’s Catholic Church. Can you imagine playing around Florida with Johnny Mathis? Well he has. Then there has been Mannheim Steamroller, Celtic Woman, and The Irish Tenors.

Whether you are a resident of the area or a visitor, we all should be respectful of our neighbors, the sea turtles. Sea turtles make between 40,00 and 84,000 nests along the Florida coastlines annually.* Females lay approximately 80-120 eggs and camouflage the nest before returning to the sea. There are five different species of sea turtles in Florida. The Federal Endangered Species Act lists the green, leatherback, hawksbill, and Kemp’s ridley turtle as endangered. The loggerhead is listed as threatened. Most people do not know that these acts make it illegal to harm, harass, or kill any sea turtles. Could that even be a thought? This includes their hatchlings and eggs as well. The other thing most people do not know is that it is also illegal to import, sell or transport turtles. Mote Aquarium, Sarasota, Florida is home to many of these endangered and threatened sea turtles. “We cover about 35 miles of beach that the sea turtles nest along, stretching from Long Boat Key to Venice,” said Stephanie Kettle, Director of Communications, at
