Letter from the Publisher The Gulf Shore of Florida’s West Coast is a magnificent area filled with many places to explore and talented people. That is the reason for which I have started this magazine so that small businesses, artists, performers, and musicians can be promoted.

As we adventure together through this upcoming year, I challenge you to think of a place that is unique to your interests. Magical places exist in the colorful landscape here full of outdoor parks, upscale homes, architecture, and fine art surrounding that we take for granted.

At the Gulf Shore magazine will bring you to some places or events that maybe you never heard of. Nature’s caves and winding waterways need to be preserved because they are delicate branches that lead to our beaches. We need to educate ourselves on our pristine environment and the wildlife. Visitors are encouraged to learn about and pay particular attention to these pleasant qualities while spending time on the west coast shore of Florida.

Tampa and the surrounding areas are developing into a new wave of population.

Along with beautiful sunsets, delicious cuisines, and trendy music spots, we are enveloped within a vast pool of talent. Local musicians perform at all kinds of venues from outdoor and indoor stages to piano bars and restaurants. It is here that you can take a short drive and be at the beach, go kayaking to see a manatee, and then perhaps visit a historical theater.

For businesses and talented artists, we want this to be your magazine. At the Gulf Shore magazine wants to learn about you so we can assist in elevating exposure. The magazine promotes local artists by providing a place for showcasing their art and gaining exposure. Because our area is growing, small businesses also need an outlet to advertise without the high costs of expensive advertising. At the Gulf Shore is here to assist our neighbors with that by providing content for our interested readers.

It has been an honor to speak and meet all of you who have provided me with your time for interviews and responses to my inquiries. Without you, this issue wouldn’t have been possible. Thank you for sharing your interesting businesses, hard work, and guidance. I hope that you enjoy this issue and look forward to the next issue slated for Fall 2022.

Tampa’s Palace Picture a time when going out for a night in town was dressing up in the hottest fashion and seeing the popular film at the local theater.

Greta Garbo, Gloria Swanson, Tom Mix, Norma Talmadge, Rudolph Valentino, Douglas Fairbanks Sr., John Barrymore, and “Little Mary” Pickford were the stars on the big screen. What people don’t know is that besides competition for an Oscar, there was a competition between movies studios. It was the movie studio’s goal for its film to be shown in the most elegant theater. It was at this time, after World War I, that contemporary, surrealism and deco art bloomed during the 1920s. This is when John Eberson, an architect from Chicago, who ran a plastering

company, envisioned a different kind of theater.

John had the vision to be unique in his building when the big-name movie studios like MGM and Paramount, sought to build the elegant, leading, and most stunning venues for showcasing movies.

Eberson was up for the competition with other architects of his time.

The Tampa Theatre is quite the representation of the “palace” era of movie theaters. You see, opera houses and theaters during this time were always competing. People wined, dined, and then went out to see a film. Most theaters had ornate ceilings, gold leaf, marble pillars, and crystal chandeliers.

“People of the movies industry had a certain mindset during this time. To promote their films, they had to build the best,” said Jill Witecki, Communications Director of the Tampa Theatre. “John Eberson found a way to create something of lesser cost, but yet artistic and decorative”.

Eberson had been creating pieces of plaster and had been shipping them all over the country which he later painted when they were in place.

It was from his creations that the Tampa Theatre was born. His method of architecture changed the way of building these theaters with more inexpensive products and started what was called the “Atmospheric Theater”. Because he used plasters that were less expensive, that attracted Paramount Studios who built the theater here in Tampa. Eberson’s design made the ceiling look like a picturesque outdoor courtyard under the evening stars. The atmospheric movie palace theme became a trend, and we are lucky to have the Tampa Theatre here in the gulf shore area of Florida. The Tampa Theatre is an iconic building offering the beauty of the past and the hope of the tomorrow where film will live on.

The Tampa Theatre has been celebrating its 95th year birthday. Renovations began in the lobby a few years ago and it is now completely restored along with the seats, carpet, and main draperies in the auditorium. “A complete renovation is planned for the 100th birthday of the Theatre,” says Jill. “There is an additional 40- seat microcinema underway, which is near the front entrance box office. The micro-cinema will serve as a

Upcoming events include Beerfest, slated for this summer, and Spirit fest for Halloween. If you haven’t ever seen the Tampa Theatre, I suggest you make it a point to do so. You will be astounded at what you see and will realize what a work of art it really is! It’s hard to believe that in the 1970s it was slated for demolition.

Thank goodness it was rescued by the City of Tampa which owns it to this day. The Tampa Theatre is programmed by the nonprofit organization, The Tampa Theatre Foundation. Fundraising is any day that they open their doors for the community or the traveling visitor to catch a good movie. The theatre also offers live shows with singers, songwriters, and stand-up comedy too. You may also rent the theatre for corporate events, private events, or weddings.

So, if you want to revisit time a bit, see a piece of architecture that is truly unique, enjoy a legendary film, or a show, then you need to catch movie and go to the Tampa Theatre. You will be captivated by this play and not want to go see another show anywhere else!

Visual Literacy and Collective Knowledge

Photography is a way to see the world from an unfamiliar perspective. We all get caught up in our day-to-day activities trying to stay on track with the world evolving around us. Sometimes we need to take a step back and really see things through the eyes of others, especially young adults or children.

This is what Robert Rogers set out to do through his involvement with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Manatee County Photography Club.

The group was given the opportunity to interact with the environment around them through the eyes of a camera. The youth group’s photography project focused on using images to communicate their literacy skills visually. An image can speak aloud about feelings in an inadvertent way.

And you thought they weren’t for real...

Say the words “Weeki Wachee” and people will ask you, “Can you please repeat that?” There are some Floridians who have not even heard of this fascinating place, never mind venture to this pristine hideaway. So, let me tell you a story.

The name “Weeki Wachee”, comes from the Seminole Indians who lived in the surrounding Hernando County Florida area, north of Tampa. “Weeki Wachee” means, “winding river” or “little spring”. This fresh, natural spring

Back in 1946, Newton Perry, a U.S. Navy man envisioned this area as a good area to start a business.

Some people are visionaries, and he definitely was. Imagine were no gas stations, theaters or paved roads.

Hwy 19 was just a dirt two-lane road.

were more of the population here than people.

Because Perry trained Frogmen in the Navy, he invented a free-flowing air hose that supplied oxygen from an air compressor rather than having divers wear a tank. Clean-up crews were assembled. You see, sadly the spring was filled with abandoned cars, and rusty old appliances and had to be cleaned up. It had been neglected but Perry was determined to change that. So, with his air hose invention, they dove into to the springs to clean up and prepare the place which would become a home for mermaids.

I am sure people thought he was crazy! But like any successful visionary, his idea was a victory and Weeki Wachee Springs would become a desired tourist spot.

Perry decided to have a theater built into the limestone so viewers could see right into the natural beauty of the springs. He recruited young women and trained them to swim with his free-flowing air hose. And that is how the Weeki Wachee mermaids were born.

On October 13, 1947, the first show at Weeki Wachee Springs opened.

It was on this day that the mermaids water ballet was performed while breathing through air hoses hidden in the scenery. People were stunned!

Weeki Wachee attraction received worldwide acclaim and during the 1950s, was one of the nation’s most

popular tourist stops. The movie, “Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid”, a movie that starred William Powell, Irene Hervey and Ann Blyth, was filmed at Weeki Wachee and you can find it on the ROKU TV. It’s a story about a couple who travels to the West Indies, goes fishing and catches a mermaid.

In 1959, the spring got purchased by the American Broadcasting Company (ABC) and was heavily promoted. The current theater, which seats about 400 guests was built by ABC and is 16 feet below the surface. ABC promoted the springs with shows such as Underwater Follies and a Circus. Some of the popular performances by the mermaids were “The Wizard of Oz”, “Alice in Wonderland”, “Peter Pan” and

“Snow White”.

In the 1960s, Weeki Wachee Springs had a total of 35 mermaids who rolled out stunning performances.

Just to be a mermaid was a prestigious privilege and some girls actually came from outside the U.S. to audition. In Florida, mermaids were treated like queens wherever they went. Some of the movie stars of that era such as Elvis Presley, Don Knotts, Esther Williams, and Arthur Godfrey came to watch the mythical mermaids perform.

In 1982, the springs added Buccaneer Bay, known for its white sand beach and waterslides. And in 1997, the springs started a “Yesteryear Show”, which brought back former

mermaids for standing-room-only crowds. The magic of the springs is something to be noted. The springs somehow brings back mermaids all the time, like a never-ending story. “Once a mermaid, always a mermaid,” is the mermaid motto.

So if you need to experience some magic, without the crowds of the Mickey Mouse families, I encourage you to visit Weeki Wachee Spring State Park. The springs became a National Park in 2008. I am happy for this. It means that the mermaids are protected, like an endangered species. And like so many other surprising historical places and things, they should be on the endangered list, right?

The rest is history and the family would share their tasty Italian fare here at this location in Sarasota.

Sherry and the Rockafellas!!!

This rockabilly band was formed on May 3, 2017, by Sherry and her husband Bugsy. Bugs is a selftaught guitarist born in Texas and raised here in the sunshine state of Florida. He started playing as a child and taught himself music theory. Sherry, from Rhode Island, was a shower singer and bridged the stage for the first time on March 17, 2018, for a cancer benefit with the newly formed band. Then came Danny, originally from Puerto Rico, who began banging on the drums when he was a child. He decided to move here and join the group after Hurricane Katrina. Following came Jerome, a self-taught bassist from the Big Apple, New York City who plays strictly by ear and learned the upright for Sherry and the Rockafellas. Put them all together and you get something between singing rock and roll and the blues!

In short, Rockabilly music has that unique catchy style that lends the ear some familiar sounds. It is an early form of rock music originated by white performers in the American South, popular from the mid-1950s to the 1960s with a revival in the late 1970s. Record reviewers invented the term rockabilly— literally, rock and roll played by hillbillies—to describe the intense, rhythm-driven musical style introduced by Elvis Presley on his first recordings.

Influencers such as Johnny Burnett, Elvis, Wanda Jackson, Imelda May, The Collins Kids, and so many others is what made Sherry and the Rockafellas’ unique style performance such a draw for excitement.

Sherry and the Rockafellas have an original album called “Rockabilly Bop”. Their upbeat songs are positive and interesting, to say the least. The album can be purchased at CD Baby, Spotify, and Mustang records. They also perform songs from other artists such as Elvis to Ozzy and in between, all with the rockabilly style. Jake Jones is an award-winning artist based in sunny Naples, Florida. His love of “all things ocean” shines thru in his artworks of sea life on unique canvases. Made from actual reclaimed surfboards that once carved waves themselves, these hand made creations are ready to hang in your home, beach house or lanai. Surfboards are made from fiberglass, foam and a wooden stringer. To carve the foam, he removes the fiberglass. Once the carving is done he uses automotive paints and sprays a combo of candy colors, pearls and metallics to capture the beauty of the ocean in his carvings.

Jake left his “sure thing” job two years ago to pursue his love for art and says it was the best thing he has ever done. He generally

People often ask me how I create my art. The fact is, there is no simple answer, it is not an equation where A plus B equals art. My art is a complex compilation of my life experiences.

Part of it is my training, I have formally studied painting, design, and photography. Obviously, this was a great foundation, but that is only where I learned the tools of the trade. And although these tools are valuable, they do not create art.

You have to combine the tools with life experiences.

I have a wide range of experiences from teaching to designing book covers and even creating art for NASA. In addition, the places I have lived have an effect on my art. The art I created in New York has a very different aesthetic than the art that I create in Florida. I didn’t paint sunglasses and fruit when I was

Speaking of sunglasses, things I personally enjoy are always going to find their way into my art. And I love accessories, I actually collect vintage jewelry and you will often see extravagant necklaces in my paintings. And my love for Art Deco and Mid-Century Modern design is always popping up in my art.

Whether you are a resident of the area or a visitor, we all should be respectful of our neighbors, the sea turtles. Sea turtles make between 40,00 and 84,000 nests along the Florida coastlines annually.* Females lay approximately 80-120 eggs and camouflage the nest before returning to the sea.

There are five different species of sea turtles in Florida. The Federal Endangered Species Act lists the green, leatherback, hawksbill, and Kemp’s ridley turtle as endangered. The loggerhead is listed as threatened. Most people do not know that these acts make it illegal to harm, harass, or kill any sea turtles.

Could that even be a thought? This includes their hatchlings and eggs as well. The other thing most people do not know is that it is also illegal to import, sell or transport turtles.

Mote Aquarium, Sarasota, Florida is home to many of these endangered and threatened sea turtles. “We cover about 35 miles of beach that the sea turtles nest along, stretching from Long Boat Key to Venice,” said Stephanie Kettle, Director of Communications, at

“This is our busy season right now, but the turtles nest from May through October!”

The MOTE Aquarium provides two hospitals for these sea creatures. One is the hatchling hospital where disoriented, swim frenzied turtles can regain their strength. You see, some hatchlings are picked up by predators, such as birds, raccoons, armadillos, or even coyotes.

The sea turtle’s instinct is to keep going until they reach the water. What happens is a “swim frenzy” because the predator drops them from their original nesting area therefore, the little guy cannot get back to the water because they are so exhausted.

But on a good note, Kettle said that this is MOTE’s 7thyear increase for the turtle population.
