You basically can put on a snorkel and fins anywhere there’s water and find some fascinating sights. Our majestic area is filled with lots of wonders that can make for a great day in the sun with some exploration!

Looking for the

Signature Snook Thump

Snook have such powerful jaws that you can hear them hit a bait in shallow water from quite a distance away and it is an unmistakable sound. On the other hand, when fishing in deeper water, you will feel the thump of a large snook and know exactly what hit you once you have experienced the heavy thump of a large snook. This thump is what all the snook junkies live for. It is that few seconds of feeling the hit and knowing already from the severity of the thump that when you set the hook you are in for a fight.

September 1st marks the start of snook season in our Tampa Bay area. On normal years where there are no special circumstances, the acronym MASON is what I like to teach at my fishing seminars to help anglers remember when the open season is. The beginning of the year March and April are the first M&A of the year, then at the end of the year September, October and November.

Their life cycle is similar to the tarpon’s life cycle especially in the early stages. During the spawning season, May through September females go to passes and mouths of bays to lay their eggs which they can do every 2 days, releasing 1.25-1.5 million eggs at a time. The higher salinity water areas are better for making the eggs and newly hatched larvae more buoyant, which gives them a better chance to float to a nearby estuary habitat suitable for their survival. In the early stages, under 1 year old small snook will seek out low salinity areas and even fresh/ brackish water even low oxygen areas that their young bodies can adapt to, that the predator fish can’t. Around 1 year old (10-12 inches) they will start to need higher oxygen and salinity levels which will make them move to the lower estuary with their grown counterparts. They must be careful, because snook will eat their own if they are hungry enough.

If you want to catch snook, well there are many different tactics. Nighttime fishing vs daytime fishing vs live bait vs artificial, all has its place and preference. Much of this is up to each individual and the style of fishing that they prefer.

Early morning before all the beach goers get out there look for snook in the swash channels near each side of the passes leading into the gulf. Cast parallel to the beach with lures that imitate bait fish like a white bucktail or a Mirrodine using a slight twitch. Use a twitch retrieve motion till you figure out the speed that gets you the hit. At night or early morning, you can work the pass bridges with a flairhawk jig or

The typical fall migration would be to move from the beaches to the inshore waters, continuing to rivers or deeper canals as the water cools. Snook are cold blooded, so they are only as warm as the water they are in. Knowing

Bridge fishing with live bait like pinfish, small lady fish or finger mullet on the same set up with a 6/0-7/0 hook can also be fun.

Light tackle fishing during the day for snook is also very fun and enjoyable. During the day most of the time, you cannot run to heavy of a leader because they will be able to see it and you will not get as many hits. 10-20lb braided line with 4-5 feet of 25-30lb seaguar fluorocarbon leader with a 1/02/0 owner Mutu Light circle hook.

On the flats a topwater lures like mirrolure’s pro dog or a subsurface mirrodine are great choices along with live baits like pinfish, finger mullet, threadfin herring and scaled sardines.

Ahhh cigars. What makes them so special and why do people prefer them over cigarettes? Smoking a cigar can be a relaxing experience and it lasts much longer than a cigarette. Plus, there are many different flavors and most people prefer smoking them during special occasions. Cigars have been known to be associated with power and masculinity.

Researchers say cigars were thought to have been invented by the ancient Mayans which dates back to the 10th century. They wrapped the tobacco in a palm leaf or plantain. Most European cigars were originally manufactured in Spain.

Spain tried to dominate and monopolize the cigar industry, so many cigar manufacturers decided to move to Key West, Florida, and the Philippines.

There are different types of cigars. The original shape of the cigar by the Mayans is the most common one, the Parejo. It is a simple cylinder like the shape of everyday cigarettes. Most of them were named after famous people which helped

to make the cigar popular. Figurado cigars, were very popular but most were collectors’ items because they were expensive to manufacture. Then there is the little cigar that resemble cigarettes, but they are not like traditional cigars.

Tucked away down Filmore Drive in St. Armands Circle, is Bennington Tobacconist.

In 1965, William E. Bennington founded Bennington Tobacconist. Bennington, being a pipe smoker, noticed that there was a lack of high-quality pipe tobacco in the U.S. and decided to make it available. It was his passion like other small businesses of today that give to us more top-quality attention for the pleasure of an amazing product.

Bennington also had a vision to offer hand-mixed tobacco blends and hand-rolled cigars. The initial location was St. Armands Circle, Sarasota. But Mr. Bennington also wanted to offer his creations to more people and as his business grew, he knew he needed to have another location.

After a three-year-long search, he purchased an existing shop at which to launch part of his dream. He opened his second location in Palm Beach County on the eastern coast of Florida.

His three sons, Jack, Jim, and Gary were brought up in the business and still are an integral part of the location that has existed for over 50 years in St. Armands Circle. Sarasota. The store in Boca Raton on the eastern seaboard closed in 2015.

Still popular today is Bennington Blends No. 10 and No. 24. At Bennington’s they still prefer buying the basic tobacco and then creating the unique blends for them. They have created their own type of work of art!

“Everyday is Halloween, isn’t it? For some of us,” author Tim Burton has said. One of the stories he wrote, “The Nightmare Before Christmas” lifts you up with a tantalizing dance of characters. His story’s interpretations were successful in making us think twice about the things the mind can perceive. Read on about some of the stories we found about this area.

might make you a little inquisitive, we thought this issue would be a good time to publish it. We may not have all the “real” facts here, but gathering tales and stories from different sources makes any journey worth looking into. Whether you believe in ghosts and spirits is up to you.

do not even realize that you are driving for that long because of the beauty that surrounds it. On a clear day, it is a majestic work of architecture and in the evening also a sight to see. Part of the old bridge is a fishing pier providing a great day of fishing on the bay.

The Sunshine Skyway Bridge Some of us have crossed this bridge many times and some of you may not like bridges. Maybe for a reason?

Back in 1980, the previous old bridge was hit by a freighter. This catastrophe caused the bridge to collapse. Several cars and a Greyhound bus plunged into the water and only one man survived. It has been said that a “ghost bus” has been seen by people who visit the fishing pier.

Also, it’s been told that when the wind blows a certain way, you might even get a gasoline scent!

This massive bridge connecting the Tampa Bay region is considered haunted by some. Stretching for five and a half miles, when driving across it you

So if you do believe in ghosts, motorists have claimed that late at night they saw a woman standing alone on the bridge. The story claims that she gets into the vehicle and then disappears from the passenger seat. Others have claimed that the woman appears to be hitchhiking and then is extremely anxious to get to the other side,. After appearing with this anxiety she then vanishes.

May-Stringer House, Brooksville The May-Stringer House, located

in downtown Brooksville is one of few stops to see in this growing, charming town. Set back in a treelined corner, this Victorian home has stunning gingerbread trim and sits on what was once a 160-acre plantation. Today, it is a museum with a few not necessarily wanted visitors.

Every haunted story usually stems from a tragedy and the May-Stringer House has just that. In 1855, John L. May purchased the house with 160 acres of plantation fields. He lived there with his wife Marena and two

daughters. Three years later, John died of tuberculosis. His widowed wife, Marena remained in the house and later remarried Frank Saxon, a Confederate soldier hero. They wanted a child and so Jessie Mae was born in 1869 but Marena died during the birth. Jessie unfortunately died three years later of unknown causes.

ghost hunting groups that have come.

Even some of SciFi’s “Ghosthunters” team has been here. Noting this, then this has to be a naturally “haunted” scene! In fact, you can test this place out for yourself on a Ghost tour.

There are individual two-hour tours for $20.00. These tours must be made in advance and are a fun evening for support of the May-Stringer Museum..

What was that? Unexplained Booming…

For over 50 years, Floridians have heard unexplainable booming sounds.

People have stated that it may be the supersonic aircraft breaking the sound barrier. Some even believe that the sounds come from underground.

On January 25 and 26th, 1994, several of these booms were felt across areas that include Ocala, Gainesville, Dunnellon, and Deland, but studies from the American Federal Aviation Administration have maintained that they had no explanation for the sonic booms experienced. And the fact is that there were no shuttles flying

during this time. So what were these boom sounds?

Florida’s Giant Penguin In 1948, people in Clearwater Beach claimed to have seen an enormous penguin. Tales tell us that this creature was fifteen feet tall and left its huge tracks in the sand. During the same period of time, a large penguinlike bird was seen by people in a boat.

Later in the year off the banks of the Suwanee River, another penguin-like bird was said to be seen by a private air pilot. Is this a coincidence?

Later on, there was an inquiry made

by Ivan Sanderson. Sanderson was a biologist who became known for writings on topics such as cryptozoology, a word Sanderson coined in the early 1940s, with special attention to the search for

lake monsters, sea serpents, Mokèlémbèmbé, giant penguins, Yeti, and Sasquatch. It was his claim that made this giant penguin continue his story for many years on. Prints were appearing on occasion on and off for 10 years.

Bradenton’s Miracle Wall At the Palma Sola Presbyterian Church’s outdoor brick wall, is a phenomenal picture. The face of Jesus can be seen. In 2000, the church was pressure washed and a 15-foot image appeared. The church has been through storms and pressure washed time and time again but still, the image remains. Is it really a miracle?

Whether you are a believer in ghosts, apparitions, spirits, or miracles, these places are definitely worth a stop if you are in the area. Our imagination can drive our thoughts into what we want to believe, which can be either true or a hoax. I think we will have to leave that up to the individual’s judgement!

Virginia Bright grew up on a farm in Indiana with the surroundings of nature. With a background of nature as her palette, she looked at the world as an artist. Her family hugely supported her artistic abilities and, of course, are still a huge supporter. It has been about a year and a half since Virginia took the step as a full-time artist and her works are vibrant and unique.

She has always been passionate about colors and patterns, as seeing the word in this way only comes through an artist’s eye. Virginia has been in awe of things that others don’t take the time to really “see”. She says, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. That sentence right there gave art such a definition to me, that I fell in love.”

Virginia Bright Mixed Medium Artist Acrylic Painting Repurposing/Recycling Materials

Virginia’s inspirations are Pablo Picasso, the influential artist of Cubist design, and Frida Kahlo, a Mexican painter known for her self-portraits and bold, vibrant colors.

Currently, Virginia has been working on paintings that have been painted with recycled/repurposed spoons. She has created this type of art because she feels that there is too much waste in the world. “Why not try and make something beautiful with it?” said Virginia. Quite a few of her works are done on repurposed kitchen cabinet doors, ship-lap siding boards, airplane aluminum circles, and other materials that can be painted on.

Ernestine Black

The Ernestine Black band stands out from typical musicians. Together, the band has an eclectic group of musical influences from the 60s, 70s and 80s. Inspirations from Neil Young, John Denver, Janis Ian, Eagles, U2, and John Lennon, prove their sound. You also can feel some of the vibe from some modern-day artists such as John Mayer, Ray LaMontagne, Dallas Green, Manchester Orchestra, Death Cab for Cutie, and so many others.

Sarah Long is the frontwoman and plays rhythm guitar. Scott Perez is the man on bass and vox, and Noel Perez is the percussionist on the drums. Tyler Davis plays lead guitar and vox.

Together they perform across the Tampa Bay area. Some venues that you will find them at is Seven C Music in St. Petersburg, New World in Tampa, and NoiseMakers also in St. Petersburg.

Sarah has been songwriting & composing music since she was about 10 years old and started playing live at age 16. After moving to Florida in 2012, she met Scott Perez in 2020. The couple began collaborating and gigging as a duo. Both of them shared their love of music and also sparked a romantic relationship. They brought on Scott’s brother Noel and their close friend Tyler to join the band in late 2022.

Some of the nature of their songs are honest and considered raw so they tend to play at venues that allow for an intimate shared experience for everyone. The Ernestine Black Band has played everything from crusty bars and porches to large capacity venues and living rooms. Sara says “It doesn’t really matter so much where we play as long as the sound quality is good and the audience is engaged!”

The band is in the process of recording a song called “Someday” and creating a music video for it. The song describes the struggle and desperation of chasing a dream and feeling delusional for never giving up on this dream despite self-doubt.

They have the inspiration to push the bounds of their creativity and make music that we’re proud of. They want to resonate with listeners. They tend to write songs that talk about uncomfortable things; mental health, depression, grief, loss, feeling bitter, making mistakes and being vulnerable.

The band uses their voice and platform as artists to support charitable causes in the community and build positive change. Last February, they donated the proceeds of their album release Directions for Living, a local organization that provides healthcare and pharmacy access, mental health services, family counseling and parent training, stable housing and other financial support to children, adults, and families in need.

The Gulf Shore Creatures seen at the

Tarpon Springs Aquarium

The Gulf Shore area has an abundance of wildlife. The more we know about the environment and its creatures the more we have the opportunity to take care of it. Learning about our local wildlife “friends” can be easily done by visiting the Tarpon Springs Aquarium.

Since 1990, this Family-owned aquarium has provided hands-on experiences for residents and visitors alike. The Tarpon Springs Aquarium is run by Grant Konger along with his Dad, Scott Konger, and his sister, Paige KongerHenry. Other members of the family also help out at the facility including Jeffrey Konger, and Grant’s autistic younger brother, James Konger.

You’d be surprised of your finds here at this local fun spot for the entire family.

They have shows including an alligator show, feedings of sharks, gators, and a chance to see the tarpon, rays and cute turtles.

Most people are familiar with the Grouper fish of Florida, which is an excellent dinner on the table.

However, The Tarpon Aquarium also hosts a Goliath Grouper which

is at a pretty phenomenal size.

There are also Tarpon, Snook, Red Drum and Crevalle Jacks.

The Tarpon Aquarium’s American Alligator Show is great to listen to and learn from. The modern-day dinosaurs really are a sight to see if you have not yet encountered one

The group of animals here include sharks that are native to the Gulf Shore area. They are the Nurse Shark, Lemon Shark, and the White Spotted Bamboo Shark.

Stingrays of course are also an abundant group in the waters. At the aquarium, you get the chance to pet these dinosaur-like creatures of the sea. Some of the stingrays here are the Cownose Stingray, Southern Stingray, and the Atlantic Stingray.

With the other sets, you will also encounter the more subtle creatures of the facility like the Alligator Snapping Turtle.

Fall Harvest Recipes Sweet Potato Pie

Turkey Pot Pie

Ingredients

Ingredients

1 9-inch ready to bake pie shell

1 Pillsbury refrigerated pie crust (15 oz. package)

1/2 Tsp cinnamon

2 cup diced cooked turkey or chicken

1/4 Tsp ground ginger

2 cups frozen mixed vegetables thawed

1/4 Tsp nutmeg

1/4 Tsp dried thyme

1/4 Tsp salt

1 (12 oz.) jar roasted turkey or chicken gravy

1/2 cup firmly packed light brown sugar 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1 1/2 cups cooked, mashed yams or sweet potatoes 2 Tbsps melted butter 3 large eggs, beaten 1 Tsp pure vanilla extract 3/4 cup milk 1. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Prepare 9-inch pie shell according to package directions, set aside.

2. In a large mixing bowl,combine sugars, nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon and salt. Add butter, yams and eggs.

Beat slightly until just combined. Add the vanilla and the milk, stirring well.

3. Pour the filling into pie shell. To prevent browning cover edge with aluminum foil.

4. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove foil. Lower oven to 350 degrees and bake 20 minutes longer or until toothpick or knife inserted in center comes out clean. Cool for 1 - 2 hours, then refrigerate within 2 hours.

1. Heat oven to 400 degrees. Soften pie crust as directed on package. Remove 1 crust from pouch, unfold. Place crust in bottom and up sides of 1-quart casserole.

2. In medium saucepan, combine all fillings ingredients.

Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring frequently.

Pour into crust-lined casserole. Top with second crust, seal edges and flute. Cut slits in several places in top crust.

3. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 - 30 minutes or until filling is bubbly and crust is golden brown. If necessary, cover edge of crust with aluminum foil after 15 - 20 minutes of baking to avoid browning.
