A tree-lined lane, Hertingfordbury Oil on canvas 50.8 x 60.8cm Provenance: By family descent from the artist to the present owner Spencer Gore was a founder member of the Fitzroy Group in 1907, of the Camden Town Group in 1911 (of which he was the first President), and of the London Group in 1913. His influence on British painting in this period was considerable, not least on the work of his close friend Walter Sickert who said ‘it is my practice that was transformed from 1905 by the example of the development of Gore’s talent’. Gore looked to the new artistic innovations in France, particularly the work of Cézanne and Derain, and assimilated them into his own work. In 1914 Gore died of pneumonia aged only 35, leaving a hugely significant artistic legacy. £10,000-15,000

This scene was just a few miles from Nash’s home in Meadle, Buckinghamshire, and he depicted the landscape of his beloved Chilterns repeatedly throughout his career. Despite the traditional subject matter the composition is inventive and unusual, with the central copse splitting the work in two, and the bold reds and greens contrasting with the subtle rendering of the sky. It is a painting that demonstrates that although in many ways Nash was the quintessential English landscape painter, underlying his work was a rare sophistication and brilliance. £20,000-30,000

His work was heavily influenced by the Fauves, leading to the intense contrasts of colour that we see in Intérieur à la fenêtre ouvrant sur la mer Méditerranée. Nadal frequently made references to other artists in his work, and the motif of painting a scene beyond an open window, which we see in the present work, was a favourite of Matisse’s, who Nadal met in 1948. Nadal’s paintings are joyous and optimistic, reflecting his view that one should “look up and around, not down at the pavement – enjoy life”. The authenticity of the present work has been confirmed by the Comité Nadal.

ARTIST’S RESALE RIGHT / DROIT DE SUITE Lots marked with a Φ symbol are potentially subject to a levy. Droit de Suite is a royalty payable to a qualifying artist or the artist’s heirs each time a work is resold during the artist’s lifetime and up to a period of 70 years after the artist’s death. Royalties are calculated on a sliding percentage scale based on the hammer price excluding the buyer’s premium. The royalty does not apply to lots selling below £1,000 and the maximum royalty payable on any single lot is £12,500.
