As we move through December, many of us feel a mix of joy, exhaustion, and reflection. Some things this year went beautifully; others are still unfinished. But God reminds us that He finishes what He starts. Even when we can’t see the full picture, His hand is still steady, and His work in us is still unfolding. This month isn’t just an ending; it’s a gentle reminder that God is faithful in every season. He is completing the work in your mind, your spirit, your family, your career, and your purpose.

A Legacy of Excellence: Reflecting on the 85th Anniversary Gala of the Columbia The Columbia chapter was honored to recognize (SC) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. especially five members with over six CONTRIBUTOR

In a dazzling celebration of history, sisterhood, and service, the Columbia (SC) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. marked its 85th Anniversary with a grand gala on November 15, 2025, at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center. This milestone honored not only the remarkable legacy of the sorority’s impact in the Midlands but also paid homage to generations of visionary women who paved the way for progress and community uplift. The gala opened with “The Celebration Begins,” a reverent yet joyful presentation chaired by Doris Glymph Greene, featuring an iconic Delta Stroll that set the tone for an evening immersed in pride and purpose.

The celebration welcomed a distinguished cadre of national leaders, including 23rd National President, Dr. Louise A. Rice, 24th National President, Cynthia M. A. Butler-McIntyre, National First Vice President Rosie AllenHerring, National Treasurer Rosalyn L. Glenn and South Atlantic Regional Director Pamela M. Lewis, whose presence underscored the occasion’s significance.
decades of continuous service and commitment: Rosena Reese Lucas, Helen Currie Schumpert, Priscilla Foggy Murrell, Marlene Murphy McClerklin, and Doris Glymph Greene. These Honorary Co-Chairs embody the chapter’s 85th theme, “Our Legacy of Excellence Continues,” with dignity and devotion. United States Congressman James E. Clyburn served as the Honorary 85th Gala Chair, adding gravitas to the evening’s program. The presence of chapter presidents past and present, including current Chapter President Dr. Arlene Prince and Anniversary Chair Doris Cochran, further demonstrated the steady leadership shaping the chapter’s impact across decades.

A Tribute to Heroism and History One of the most stirring segments of the evening was the tribute to Lieutenant Colonel Charity Adams Earley, one of the fifteen charter members, the chapter’s first president and a pioneering figure in American military history. The salute featured a moderated conversation led by Beryl Dakers of South Carolina ETV and included military leaders and scholars Lieutenant General Gwendolyn Bingham, Dr. Bobby Donaldson and Crissandra Elliott. Colonel Kimberly K. L. Greene (Ret) delivered the Water Toast, a reflection of sisterhood and service rooted in the example set by Lieutenant Colonel Earley, the highest-ranking Black woman officer in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, leading the first and only Women's Army Corps unit of color—the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion—to serve overseas during World War II.
Music, Memories, and Milestones Musical interludes, including performances by violinist Sergeant Asher Askew and the Delta Sweetheart Song, gave the night a lush artistic texture. A dinner featuring culinary delights such as braised short ribs, butternut squash risotto, and mini red velvet cakes was enjoyed against a backdrop of sisterhood and celebration as guests toasted to 85 years of service and success. Anniversary toasts were made by notable voices, among them Dr. Jennifer Clyburn Reed, Dr. Andrea M. Fleming and South Atlantic Regional Director Pamela M. Lewis joined by the 23rd and 24th National Presidents, highlighting the collaborative and ongoing commitment of Delta Sigma Theta to education, social action, and leadership development.
The Journey Forward With over 500 financial members, the Columbia (SC) Alumnae Chapter continues to be a beacon of public service, community advocacy, and intergenerational empowerment. Its history, from the establishment of a day nursery in the 1940s to its recent scholarship awards exceeding $34,000, showcases an unbroken chain of dedication and innovation. This 85th Anniversary Gala was more than a celebration— it was an affirmation that the legacy of Delta Sigma Theta in Columbia remains vibrant and visionary. As the evening drew to a close with dancing accompanied by the Luvel Band, one sentiment echoed across generations: “For this evening, for those assembled here, for this 85th Anniversary Celebration, for the sisterhood, we are truly thankful.”

On December 2, 2025, the Columbia (SC) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated received a formal Proclamation from Mayor Daniel J. Rickenmann and the Columbia City Council in honor of the Chapter’s 85 years of sisterhood, scholarship, service, and social action. Founded in 1940, the Columbia (SC) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated has served the Midlands region for eight and a half decades through impactful programming, advocacy, youth mentorship, economic development initiatives, health awareness campaigns, and educational outreach. The Proclamation acknowledges the Chapter’s unwavering dedication to uplifting communities across Richland, Fairfield, Lexington, and Newberry Counties, recognizing its longstanding commitment to public service, leadership development, and meaningful civic engagement.

THE PROCLAMATION
The proclamation ceremony was facilitated by City leadership, including Teresa B. Wilson, City Manager of the City of Columbia, SC, who joined Mayor Daniel J. Rickenmann and the Columbia City Council in recognizing the Chapter’s enduring legacy of civic engagement and service. First Vice President, Andedra Edwards received the Proclamation on behalf of the Chapter, noting that the recognition affirms the guiding principles that continue to shape the Chapter’s work. Doris Cochran, General Chair of the 85th Anniversary Committee, emphasized the Chapter’s continued role as a leading force in social action and community impact as the 85th Anniversary observance continues into 2026. Dr. Durant discussed how parents play a crucial role in supporting their child’s independence in college by offering guidance without taking control. As students navigate new responsibilities —such as managing their time, finances, and academic choices—parents can encourage confidence by trusting them to make decisions and learn from mistakes. Providing emotional support, asking thoughtful questions, and setting healthy boundaries helps students develop problem-solving skills and self-reliance. When parents shift from directing to mentoring, they empower their college students to grow into capable, independent adults while still knowing support is available when truly needed.

Featured speaker at TEDx Congaree Vista Congratulations to Soror Kimberly Smith for being selected as a featured speaker at TEDx Congaree Vista! The conference is scheduled for February 2026 in downtown Columbia, SC. Speakers were chosen after a rigorous process: hundreds of applicants, interviews, and final curation by a panel guided by TEDx standards.

Congratulations to Soror Linda Hough-Hicks, who was recently elected as the District 1 Ambassador Representative for the national organization, American Business Women’s Association. Linda will represent the states of South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and Puerto Rico. Linda was installed at National Women’s Leadership Conference in Portland Maine on November 12, 2025. Linda is a local member of the Columbia Triad Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association. ABWA offers a safe space for business women to Activate Your Ambition.

Congratulations to Soror Genice Hall-Fowler, who was selected to serve as the National Sergeant-AtArms of the American Business Women’s Association. Soror Hall-Fowler also received the esteemed recognition of “Service Excellence” award during the 2025 National Women’s Leadership Conference in Portland Maine. Soror Genice Hall-Fowler is the Founder of the ABWA Women Connecting Women Chapter in her hometown of Newberry, where they recently celebrated their 5th anniversary and holds a national status and awards as a “Best Practices in League Management” Chapter. She also served on ABWA’s National Board of Directors from 20222024 and as a Trustee for ABWA’s nonprofit branch, Stephen Bufton Educational Foundation. She continues to be a local member of the Columbia Triad Chapter, along with Women Connecting Women Chapter.
