The Future of Medical Illustration & Animation

Artistic Intelligence: Adapting to the Times

The creative world has shifted at warp speed. We find ourselves in a time of rapidly fluctuating commercial art markets, iterative open-source image-making tools, reassessment of our roles within the sphere of emerging technology, and wondering what the future will hold.

There is a feeling of excitement among image makers, but also of concern. As medical illustrators, we must remain vigilant over the core concepts and tools we’ve been trained on while adapting to challenges like the use of artificial intelligence. The widespread use of AI generators to create art based on text prompts is changing the way buyers approach production strategies.

It is also changing the way commercial artists make art. Many of us are adopting AI and machine learning tools as part of our workflow. It is possible to quickly generate sketch references and elements for storyboards; pose bodies and hands for drawing; generate sample backgrounds and color palettes. Artists are offering new products and skills, showcasing AI-enhanced commercial art styles, and helping to design and populate AR/VR spaces. Work that previously lived on a two-dimensional digital plane is now enhanced and optimized for 3D.

Science, too, is embracing the power of machine learning to process and interpret data. There are enormous efforts underway to map the human body at cellular resolution, spatially and through time. The field of spatial transcriptomics has exploded and will add greatly to our understanding of how and why we age and develop disease. Illustrators, information designers and visual communicators are greatly needed as we work to advance this knowledge.

Simplicity is also making a comeback. In an age where it is possible to rapidly generate 3D art, I have seen a resurgence in clients requesting sketch and traditional media styles. We continue to use the skills and tools art has always relied on, albeit in new applications.

Artists, Creatives, Thought Leaders: Let’s continue to embrace growth and change, finding creativity in new opportunities.

Art Buyers, Creative Directors, Strategic Partners: We remain your premiere source of artistic talent and experienced knowledge providers. We look forward to a year of creative collaboration, as we work to help shape the future, together.

In Partnership,
