DAY SANGUINHO HIKE +FURNAS
This 4,5 km long hike of medium difficulty will take you on an approximately 2 hours long journey through one of the geologically oldest and historically most isolated regions in the south-west of the island, where you will traverse dense forests of acacia and picturesque valleys with rivers flowing directly into the Atlanc Ocean. Part of the 1 million-year-old Povoação Volcanic Complex, the Sanguinho trail is famous for its awe-inspiring Salto do Prego waterfall and abundant vegetaon, parcularly the endemic Azorean Buckthorn, to which the trail owes its name.
Following the hike, you will visit the nearby village of Furnas, which has aained global fame for its volcanic acvity, boasng numerous geysers, as well as various hot springs and naturally sparkling water flowing directly out of the ground – all of which are said to possess different healing properes!
End the day with a relaxing visit to the botanical garden and a hot bath at a natural thermal pool.
For our Farewell Dinner, we'll taste the famous Cozido das Furnas, a local dish with a variety of meats and vegetables, cooked underneath the ground by the volcanic vapors.
