Giovanni Battista Piranesi

• One of the greatest printmarkers of the eighteenth century. • Piranesi always considered himself as an architect. • Received a thorough background in perspective construction and stage design. • Resided in the Palazzo Venezia and studied under Giuseppe Vasi, who introduced him to the art of etching and engraving.

Giovanni Battista Piranesi, Paestum, 1770-78

With Giuseppe Vasi, the foremost producer of the etched views of Rome- that supplied pilgrims, artists, and tourists with a lasting souvenir of their visit. Quickly mastering the medium of etching Piranesi found in it an outlet for all his interests, from designing fantastic complexes of buildings that could exist only in dreams

Foro antico Romano
