Denim Day at Arizona State

Denim day is the day to recognize and protest against sexual violence and victim-blaming. The movement originated in Italy when a girl was raped by her driving instructor, but the driver was found not-guilty because the girl was wearing “tight denim jeans."

The very first denim day was held in Los Angeles, California and was organized by a nonprofit organization called “Peace Over Violence.” The event was a huge success and included thousands of people wearing denim and attending events and rallies throughout the city.

Over the years, this movement has become more and more prominent with the use of social media and other platforms, as well as to continue the push to end sexual violence. Denim day has rapidly become a worldwide movement over the past 25 years.

Arizona State University holds many events, panels, activities that relate to denim day, and have been doing so since the movement has started. We recognize and stand with victims of sexual violence no matter what, and do not tolerate this behavior from anyone.

Sorority Women of the Month

THESE WOMEN HAVE BEEN NOMINATED BY THE PANHELLENIC COMMUNITY FOR EXEMPLIFYING WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A PANHELLENIC WOMAN.

SARAH SHICK

Sarah Shick of Phi Sigma Rho was nominated multiple times for Sorority Woman of the Month! She is dedicated to her sorority and her role as the Greek Week Delegate. She encouraged a group of them to perform at Greek Sing in March and even got on stage herself. She was on the Greek Week Board as well. Thanks to her, Phi Sigma Rho won 2nd in Greek Sing and 3rd in Greek Week overall!

Sarah has helped the FSL community and Phi Rho in making an amazing impact on the Phoenix and Sun Devil Community. She organized an awesome service event where members of several fraternities and sororities came together for a great cause. Her friends say she has made her mark on several different members and organizations at ASU, and they are proud to have her as a sister in Phi Rho!

Alpha Chi Omega's Kayla Legel has also shown herself to be an outstanding sorority woman. She is always staying involved in Greek life as well as other campus events! She holds the best morals for herself and is the example of what it means to be a great sister! Her accomplishments include being the Vice President of New Member Education in her chapter and also being a USG intern!

She was nominated for being a kindhearted Panhellenic woman who deserves to be recognized for all the great things she does around campus! She makes everyone feel welcomed when they are with her!

Defending Their Theses

MADISON JONES

Chi Omega's Madison Jones defended her Barrett Honor's Thesis: The Impact of College Stress on Academic Motivation and Achievement: Moderating Effects of Effortful Control and Economic Hardship Her thesis was about how stress affects people's motivation and academic outcomes differently. Perception of stress is critical to how it can be helpful or harmful to achieving your own goals

Madison's advice to anyone who will defend their thesis next year is to take the pressure off of yourself! She says that you are going to learn so much and figure it out along the way It is definitely a long process so she recommends finding excitement throughout what you're doing to make it worth it!

Madison!

MADELEINE STEPPEL

Alpha Epsilon Phi's Madeleine Steppel defended her thesis titled: "I'm Eating by the Rav, Baruch Hashem": The Development of Yeshivish and Jewish Creole.

She said "my thesis is about the emergence of uniquely Jewish ways of speaking in the US. Ultimately, I find that less observant Jews speak a dialect of English that is infused with Yiddish and Hebrew words, whereas more observant Jews speak their own creole between Yiddish and English which is unintelligible to nonspeakers." We are so proud of you Madeleine!

PANHELLENIC WOMEN IN USG

Morgann Kelly of Kappa Kappa Gamma and Panhellenic's own Director of Women's Health, Wellness, and Sustainability has recently been announced Arizona State's new student body President!

Accompanying her on the Elect Kelly ticket is Victoria Yusupova of Kappa Alpha Theta, who is now the new Vice President of Policy. Both of these women worked tirelessly on their campaign and it shows through their success! We love seeing leadership branch outside of our community!

Panhellenic's Vice President of Member Development Paige Sotelo (Chi Omega) and Kappa Delta's Elisa Valdez were recently appointed onto ASU's Order of Omega Executive Board the last week of April. Paige will be serving as the Vice President of Professional Development and Elisa will be the new Vice President of Marketing. RAGE ROOM WITH PANHELLENIC

This month the Panhellenic Development Program got their stress out at Simply Smashing, a rage room in Tempe! All of our girls in the Panhellenic Community have been working so diligently towards finals, it was a way to release anxious energy that many didn't even know they had!

It has been so great getting to know the girls who have signed up to be in the Panhellenic Development Program. This has been a great first semester of this group and I can't wait to see what next semester brings.

Lambda Gamma Beta Tau

The past month ASU celebrated their local pride week. Lambda Gam is a club devoted to spreading inclusivity, support, affirmations, and education for LGBTQ+ individuals and allies in FSL. Julia Rome founded it in October 2022 to help decrease the stigma surrounding LGBTQ+ members in Greek Life. It’s a great way to meet other queer people in sororities and fraternities as well as provide education on the LGBTQ+ community to ASU chapters. They are very open to providing programming and doing joint events with the Panhellenic community! The new executive board is so excited especially to be present for the first time during formal recruitment. They plan to go and host more pride events, volunteer locally with LGBTQ+ organizations, and increase membership.

If interested in joining please follow the Instagram @lamdagamatasu and click the link in the bio to join the club's flare
