Black History Month WRITTEN BY TINLEY STRITTMATTER Hey there! My name is Tinley Strittmatter and I am the Director of Women's Leadership and Diversity for the Panhellenic Board. I am a freshman at Arizona State University studying Construction Engineering.

The month of February is dedicated to Black History Month. Black History Month was created to honor all African American people for all contributions that have been brought by them to America. Not only does America celebrate this, but also Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, and the Netherlands.

Black History Month first began with Historian Carter G. Woodson, known as “The Father of Black History” who co-founded the Associaton for the Study of Negro life and History. He says “We are going back to that beautiful history and it is going to inspire us to greater achievements.”

Founded in 1926, was the first Negro History week. This week was chosen because of the birthdays of Former President Abraham Lincoln, who stood for anti-slavery during the Civil war, and Fredrick Douglass, who escaped slavery and became one of the most important American social reformer for the black community.

Negro History week turned into Black History Month in 1976 because of Former US President Gerald Ford. Along with President Biden consistently supporting the black community and all the events and celebrations regarding it.

Some other significant people who have made Black History Month possible are Martin Luther King Jr., who is famously known for his “I Have a Dream” speech as well as being a dedicated activist, Thurgood Marshall, the first African American justice appointed to US supreme court in 1967, Mae Jemison, the first female african american to space travel in 1992, Rosa Parks, an activist during the Civil Rights movement, and Barak Obama, the first US African American President.

CHAPTER SPOTLIGHTS Kappa Alpha Theta Kappa Alpha Theta is a chapter that has been a part of the ASU Panhellenic community since April 11, 1959. They recently celebrated their Founder's Day n January 27th.

Their two philanthropies are Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) and the Theta Foundation.

Their values include Sisterhood, Leadership, Scholarship, Personal Excellence and Service!

Chi Omega Chi Omega was added to the ASU Panhellenic Community on May 5th, 1951. They are next to celebrate their founders day on April 5!.

They have one philanthropy: the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Their values are Friendship, Service to Others, Academic Integrity & Intellectual pursuit, Community and Campus Involvement, and Personal and Career Development.

Chi Omega awarded Chapter of the Year for 2021!

SORORITY WOMEN OF THE MONTH These women have been nominated by the Panhellenic Community for exemplifying what it means to be a Panhellenic woman.

HANNAH GEIS

Some of Hannah's accomplishments include being Panhellenic Delegate, chapter president, and helped their VP of Philanthropy in raising over $40,000.

Hannah Geis (Alpha Chi Omega) is the former president of Alpha Chi. She is one who is very humble and works to help others. She spent many hours doing unpaid work for our chapter. She shows up to every event held by her board. She encourages other members to run for leadership as well as be a listening ear when members needed it most. Hannah is an inspiration to this chapter and it would not be the same without her.

Her chapter wants her to know that they appreciate all that she did for them!

KRISTIANA PALENCIO Kristiana Palencio (Sigma Kappa) has shown she is an exemplary sorority member as she works with all council members (executive and chair) weekly about the overall chapter wellness. She works with outside sources to find DEIA opportunities for sisters to participate in for both service Some of her recent accomplishments in her chapter hours and points. include founding the first DEIA committee for this chapter, starting a new mental health check in system and expanding greek relations with both NPHC and NALFO frats/ sororities!

Month of the Scholar WHAT IS MONTH OF THE SCHOLAR?

Beginning in 2011, NPC officially recognized February as the Month of the Scholar and all NPC member groups, as well as College Panhellenics and Alumnae Panhellenic groups, are encouraged to promote academic achievement and reward academic excellence during this time.

ASU Panhellenic recognizes all of the work our women do as they are students as well as Panhellenic women.
