OneofmyfavoriteaspectsofJewishcultureishowwecelebratecontrastingideas.WehonorShabbat’s holinessalongsidetheweek’smundanity,embraceJerusalem’sancienthistorywithTelAviv’smodernity, and,duringSukkot,engagewiththephysicalworldjustdaysafterYomKippur’sspiritualreflections.
This past year reflected that balance, with both significant challenges and joyful achievements on campus. I’m proud to share our highlights, including increased student participation and philanthropic support. This December, I’ll attend the annual Hillel conference, marking 20 years in the movement and 11 as the leader of this organization Jewish students at ASU need a strong Hillel more thanever,andtogether,we’llcontinuetobuildathrivingJewishcommunity.

On September 22, 2023, we observed a special Shabbat during Family Weekend After joyous services wherewewerejam-packedonthesecondfloorofouragingbuilding,approximately200ofusgathered under a beautiful tent in our parking lot for dinner. As part of my remarks that evening, I assured the visiting parents that their child’s safety and well-being were a primary concern of the ASU Hillel board andstaff.LittledidIknow,atthatmoment,theweightofthatassurance.
The horrific events of October 7th had a profound impact on our students and staff The initial grief and sadness of that day morphed into heightened anxiety as the campus saw an increase in antisemitism andanti-Israelprotests.
Iamincrediblygratefulforandproudofourstaff.Duringachallengingyear,theyconsistentlysupported our Jewish students. They were present during difficult moments, such as when they helped students articulate their views with respect and moral clarity at a contentious student government meeting regarding a BDS motion, and when they addressed the hateful antisemitic rants posted by student groups online They also fostered joy and community through events like Sparky’s Hanukkah party, proIsrael rallies, and Shabbat services featuring our talented and energetic ShabBand. In these turbulent times,ourteamcreatedasafeandwelcomingenvironment,makingHillelatASUatruehomeawayfrom homeforourJewishstudents.

InayearmarkedbyrisingantisemitismandantiZionismoncampus–throughprotests, encampments,andeffortstopushthroughBDS–Hillel atASUstoodasacriticalresource,helpingJewishSun Devilsnavigatethesechallengeswhileremainingsafe andsupported.Weembracedourthree-pronged approachtoaddressantisemitismfromeveryangle: (1)InstillingJewishPride,(2)PrioritizingEducation, and(3)FosteringUniversity&Community Partnerships.
ByfosteringJewishpride,weprovidedspacefor studentstoexploretheirJudaismandbecomestrong advocates.Together,wehostedvigils,participatedin rallies,andengagedwithuniversityadministration, staterepresentatives,andmediainfluencerstoensure Jewishvoiceswereheard.Westoodbyourstudents everystepoftheway,offeringguidanceandsolidarity astheyfacedantisemitismhead-on.
