Commerce has the power to drive positive change at scale.

It can create jobs, drive new technologies, shape policy, support communities, propel sustainability and provide essential products and services. In these significant ways, business holds the key to an innovative future. At the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University, we embrace the positive power of industry in our relentless pursuit to transform the world through access, excellence and innovation in business knowledge.

“We call it ‘doing good while doing well,’” says Ohad Kadan, Charles J. Robel Dean, professor of finance and W. P. Carey distinguished chair. “We empower our students to have a positive impact on society while being successful in business.”

A global engine of business education and research, W. P. Carey is cultivating globally minded problemsolvers capable of driving positive change. Through Changing Futures®, we will show the world that business is a powerful tool for innovation, an engine of inclusive opportunity and a force for good in the world.

Fostering entrepreneurship and innovation

W. P. Carey is the largest business school in the U.S. and a launching pad for transformative ideas and technologies.

A spirit of entrepreneurship and creativity runs through W. P. Carey. It’s in our DNA, shaping how we identify problems and develop solutions. In alignment with the ASU Charter, we ensure our ideas improve lives.

“Being number one for innovation is also a responsibility to innovate for good. Not to innovate for the sake of innovation, not to create for the sake of creation, but to innovate in a way that makes the world a better place,” says Ohad Kadan, Charles J. Robel Dean and W. P. Carey Distinguished Chair in Business.

Our Entrepreneurship & Innovation initiative will unite ASU’s global entrepreneurial minds to scale impact. Efforts include new degrees, certifications, external learning with founders, venture capital firms, angel investors, and new centers for entrepreneurship, family businesses, incubators, and accelerators—positioning Arizona as Silicon Valley 2.0.

“We want W. P. Carey and ASU alums to be able to solve problems that exist in the world,” says Amy Ostrom, Vice Dean, President’s Professor, and PetSmart Chair in Services Leadership. “That happens when people have an entrepreneurial understanding to be able to identify problems, and then have the skill and the ability to go and create organizations that will work to solve those problems on behalf of themselves and others.”

Direct application of business principles through hands-on learning prepares students for success beyond W. P. Carey.

W. P. Carey’s Global Education initiative opens up a world of opportunities for our students.

Excellence through inclusion and access

As we look to the future of innovation, how we’ll measure success is through how many people we include.

In keeping with the ASU Charter, we’re paving the way for more students to enter the workforce while broadening the scope of future innovations. Our relentless commitment to excellence, access and impact ensures the pioneering business ideas from W. P. Carey address critical community needs.

One current need is financial literacy. According to the Milken Institute, less than 60% of American adults are financially literate. At ASU, we know financial inclusion reduces poverty and boosts success. Our Finance & Inclusion initiative will enhance financial education for teachers and expand financial literacy classes to underserved high school students. This program provides critical knowledge, college credit, and helps participants envision themselves as future college students, charting a path to prosperity.

Preparing future business leaders also requires global immersion. Our Global Education initiative expands study abroad opportunities, making the world a classroom for W. P. Carey students. These experiences broaden perspectives, foster independence and inspire leaders to use their business expertise for global good.

Building supply chain futures

W. P. Carey’s Department of Supply Chain Management is among the top programs in the nation.

Starting in 2020, the whole world discovered the importance of supply chains due to the COVID-19 pandemic. From health care and manufacturing to industries across the globe, the pandemic highlighted the critical need for sustained preparedness and robust recovery practices. W. P. Carey is determined to help businesses, government and society prepare for the next crisis that will disrupt supply chains.

“Our vision is to become the world’s supply chain university,” says Adegoke Oke, chair and professor, Department of Supply Chain Management.

To achieve this vision, our Building Supply Chain Futures initiative will reside in the Department of Supply Chain Management, which is repeatedly ranked among the top 3 programs nationally by U.S. News and World Report. With the leadership of preeminent faculty and researchers in areas such as health care, agribusiness, semiconductors and logistics and transportation, we will examine current supply chain issues from a cross-functional and multidisciplinary lens. We will develop and offer educational programs and resources to support decision-makers that are charged with developing and improving resilience for their organizations and their supply chains.

Change futures by supporting

Transform global education

In today’s interconnected world, students need global experiences to be successful in international business. Our Global Education initiative is addressing this challenge by partnering with universities to offer study abroad programs in a dozen countries and providing degree opportunities in many more. Through Changing Futures, we’ll work to prepare the largest cohort of globally minded business leaders in the U.S.

Empower community resilience

Arizona is both a laboratory and an exceptional proving ground for aspiring real estate leaders, but those individuals need more comprehensive education that balances business acumen with social responsibility. Thanks to a $25 million commitment from the W. P. Carey Foundation in 2024, we will launch an innovative undergraduate real estate degree program in fall 2025, alongside an experiential learning lab devoted to real estate. The W. P. Carey Center for the Study of Real Estate and Finance will position ASU as the leading authority in real estate education in the Southwest and across the nation.

Reshape our relationship with the planet

In a world where traditional investing and corporate governance have not yet been fully optimized, we’re taking bold action to achieve positive societal impact through several strategic initiatives, including the Center for Responsible Investing, a New Governance Lab and a financial literacy program targeting secondary education and high school students. “By empowering investors with essential tools for responsible decision-making and reimagining corporate governance to create value for all stakeholders, we will become a national leader for societal impact insights, tools and practices.

Inspire tomorrow’s game changers

Entrepreneurship education develops innovative leaders, yet many students lack access to opportunities. Our Entrepreneurship & Innovation initiative merges academia with industry to prepare future pioneers through real-world experiences.

Nearly half of American adults face financial illiteracy. Our Finance & Inclusion initiative empowers individuals to secure financial futures and pursue finance careers. Future plans include expansion of ASU’s introductory financial literacy course to lowincome high schools and educator certificates in investment and risk management.

Through investment in endowed faculty positions, we can promote rigorous teaching and research at W. P. Carey, fostering an elite global business program for all students and faculty.

Build

The COVID-19 pandemic exposed critical vulnerabilities in global supply chains, highlighting the urgent need for improved resilience across all sectors of society. The Supply Chain Futures initiative will be a hub of research, educational programs and best practices to prepare businesses, government and society for the next crisis that will disrupt supply chains.

As augmented intelligence rapidly transforms our world, it brings both incredible opportunities and potential risks to society. The Center for Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics for Business and Society (AIDA) is pioneering “mindful AI,” which promotes a deep understanding of the purpose, use and development of AI. Through research, education and real-world solutions, we’re ensuring that AI enhances lives and shapes a sustainable future for generations to come.

About us

W. P. Carey sparks positive change in business and society, by educating students and growing talent to enrich and lead organizations, producing groundbreaking and impactful research, and engaging actively with the communities we serve.
