Change the future with ASU Health
Through ASU Health, a healthier future is emerging Arizona is one of the fastest-growing states in the country, yet its health care system is struggling to keep pace. Hospitals face capacity constraints, and providers are in short supply, with workforce shortages affecting nearly every area of care. High turnover and a wave of retirements threaten to deepen these gaps in the years ahead. The effects are visible across the state. Health outcomes in Arizona continue to lag behind national benchmarks. Access to care remains uneven, especially for rural and underserved communities. Too often, where someone lives still determines how long and how well they live. At Arizona State University, our charter calls us to take fundamental responsibility for the health and well-being of the communities we serve. ASU Health reflects that commitment — bringing together the people and ideas needed to take on challenges at scale. This work requires a fundamentally new approach that strengthens the health workforce, expands access to care and brings new ideas into practice more quickly. ASU Health functions in part as a university-wide design and launch team, working across disciplines to improve health at scale. These efforts reimagine how care is taught, delivered and supported, working alongside health systems and communities to reach those too often left behind. ASU’s strength lies in its ability to move ideas into action. Built for innovation, ASU is ready to leverage ASU Health to connect disciplines, pilot new methods and scale what works. Through Changing Futures®, ASU Health will redefine health in Arizona and beyond — delivering state-of-the-art solutions and reaching underserved communities.

CHANGING FUTURES | FROM ARIZONA. FOR THE WORLD.
ASU Health is focused on translating vision into measurable impact From the outset, ASU Health set out to create healthier futures for people and communities. Achieving that ambition required building the capacity to act across systems to achieve broad impact. In its early years, the focus was on building the infrastructure needed to lead, including new schools, new partnerships and new capabilities across the university. That foundation includes academic and research leaders such as the Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation and the College of Health Solutions. Building on this strength, ASU Health launched new academic units built for the future of health, including the John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering and the School of Technology for Public Health. At the same time, ASU Health has launched cross-cutting platforms, such as the Health Observatory at ASU and the ASU Decision Theater for Health, to connect talent, data and decision-making tools across disciplines. Together, these schools and shared initiatives have strengthened ASU’s ability to bring people and ideas together around the state’s most pressing health challenges. Today, ASU Health is advancing a clear set of goals: •
Design and launch the Arizona Alliance for Health and Innovation.
•
Design the first-of-its-kind Virtual Medical School.
•
Expand ASU’s clinical enterprise.
•
Design and launch the Arizona Health Metrics Scorecard as a foundational Decision Theater for Health model.
•
Build Arizona’s trusted health data infrastructure.
•
Transform Arizona’s health workforce pipeline.
•
Advance health literacy and community well-being.
•
Grow and strengthen strategic partnerships to accelerate ASU Health.
Together, these priorities reflect a shift from building the foundation to delivering meaningful improvements in health outcomes.

The Arizona Alliance for Health and Innovation brings partners together to improve health statewide The Arizona Alliance for Health and Innovation exists for one purpose: to improve health outcomes for Arizona and beyond. It does this by creating Arizona's first statewide health innovation collaborative, connecting the state’s leading health systems, universities, public agencies, industry and community partners into a coordinated force for better health, discovery and economic prosperity. One of the alliance’s most promising efforts is the OneAZ Health Data Platform, which focuses on improving how patient data collected through clinical care can be leveraged to improve health outcomes and health system efficiency. By connecting clinical information with public health data, the platform helps partners develop a more complete understanding of what influences health across communities.

The Arizona Health Metrics Scorecard gives partners a shared view of where to focus — and how progress will be measured Today, leaders across Arizona lack a shared, data-driven way to decide where action will have the greatest impact. Arizona’s current standing on national health benchmarks highlights both urgency and opportunity. With the state ranking near the bottom among its peers, partners across health care, public agencies and communities need a faster, more coordinated way to decide where to focus effort rather than work in silos. To meet this need, the Arizona Health Metrics Scorecard is being developed as a foundational Decision Theater for Health model. In practice, this means creating an interactive, data-based environment where leaders can work from a shared set of metrics, explore different scenarios, weigh tradeoffs and build alignment before deciding how to act to improve health. The scorecard is built on the Commonwealth Fund Scorecard on State Health System Performance, a widely used national benchmarking framework that evaluates how states perform across a consistent set of measures related to access, quality, cost, outcomes and equity. By drawing on trusted national benchmarks and publicly available data, the scorecard provides a clear view of where Arizona is performing well and where improvement is needed most. The scorecard is designed to evolve from a snapshot of current performance into a decision-support tool that helps partners explore where targeted action could have the greatest impact. Most importantly, it offers a consistent baseline against which progress can be measured, encouraging accountability across sectors.

We are transforming learning, practice and care to improve health Our bold vision for the future of health includes expanding pathways into health care careers, preparing collaborative and compassionate practitioners, strengthening health literacy and creating new models for care delivery. ASU is developing a first-of-its-kind Virtual Medical School to address physician shortages, particularly in rural and tribal communities. Combining technology-enabled learning with community-based clinical training, it expands access to medical education while strengthening the pipeline of physicians prepared to serve where care is needed most. The Health Pathways Academy helps students accelerate careers in health through a coordinated, inclusive ecosystem of advising, curricular and co-curricular pathways, experiential learning and AIenabled preparation. The Collaborative for Interprofessional and Experiential Learning prepares future practitioners through team-based, cross-disciplinary education that strengthens professional readiness and supports more coordinated patient care. The Health Humanities Commons centers the human experience in health care education by integrating the humanities, arts and social sciences across teaching, research and community engagement, ensuring innovation is matched by a commitment to human-centered care. Together, these efforts advance Changing Futures by building the workforce, knowledge and models of care needed to create healthier futures for Arizona and beyond.

ASU Health Build the future of health
Advance technology for good
Arizona’s health research and innovation efforts are often spread across separate systems, slowing progress. The Arizona Alliance for Health Innovation brings universities, health systems and industry together through a shared platform led by ASU. By working collaboratively, partners accelerate discovery, train the workforce and improve health outcomes statewide.
Health systems often treat illness in isolation, focusing on immediate medical needs rather than the broader factors that influence health. The OneAZ Health Data Platform links medical, public health and community data to support wholeperson care, helping leaders address root causes of illness and build healthier, more resilient communities. Decision-makers lack a clear, evidence-based way to see what will truly improve health across Arizona. The Arizona Health Metrics Scorecard turns complex data into an easy-to-use, interactive tool that shows where progress is needed most. It helps leaders align action, test ideas and track real improvements in statewide health outcomes.
