Student achievements Software engineering student wins stellar intern award

Janani Anand, a software engineering graduate student, spent her summer interning with Hewlett-Packard and won an HP Intern-Stellar award for her project on Wi-Fi signature profiling. Anand worked on two projects simultaneously. One involved a new technology called Wi-Fi signature profiling and the other was a machine learning project for HP Labs.

NSF Fellowship supports tomorrow’s engineering leaders

The National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) supports students who show promise to become research, teaching and innovation leaders. ASU biomedical engineering graduate student and Graduate Research Fellow Jarrett Eshima, one of fifteen GRFP fellows conducting research at ASU, is researching systems biology to identify new diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic targets for neurological disorders.

Developing new technology to advance NASA space exploration missions

Chemical engineering doctoral student Gabriel Nile will collaborate with NASA researchers on his work to provide spacecraft crews with improved technology to more effectively recycle water during space missions as part of the NASA Space Technology Graduate Research Opportunities program. Nile will also work at various NASA labs10 weeks per year, collaborating with NASA specialists. 6

Summer Research Internships (SURI) The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University is offering summer research internships for qualified U.S. and international students. Participants will be connected with faculty members to pursue 8-week-long research projects. Students across all engineering disciplines are welcome to apply. Students between their junior and senior years of their undergraduate degree as well as those pursuing their masters degree, who are interested in earning a PhD, will be given highest consideration. Domestic students: Each selected participant will receive a stipend. Housing for in-person research will be available at Tooker House located at the Tempe campus. Cost of housing will be deducted from the stipend. International students: For selected participants, this will be a volunteer experience and will not come with a stipend. For students interested in in-person research, there will be a cost to participate (which will include housing). Applications for Summer 2022 will open in December 2021. Visit our website for details graduate.engineering.asu.edu/suri or email fultonschools@asu.edu.

Award-winning work simulates local food-energy-water nexus amid climate change

Civil, environmental and sustainable engineering doctoral student Xin Guan earned a competitive Central Arizona Project Award for Water Research for simulating the complex food-energywater nexus in Phoenix’s agricultural land. By analyzing how rising temperatures and water shortages will affect crop yields, Guan’s research helps local policymakers test “what if?” scenarios to optimize food, energy and water policies.

New SURI collaborations between the Fulton Schools, HBCUs, Intel and Facebook will expand diversity within graduate programs and the technology workforce, as well as to open new channels of cross-institutional collaboration. Read more online.
