03 Roosevelt Arts District: Creative Placemaker in the Urban Core
Co-Host & Presenters:
Tim Sprague - Principal of Habitat Metro, LLC and President of the Hance Park Conservancy
Description:
Greg Esser - Artist and Founder of Roosevelt Row Community Development Corporation
Roosevelt Row in downtown Phoenix was named a Great Neighborhood by the American Planning Association in 2016 and has been named a “top ten city arts district” by U.S. Today.
Learn first-hand how a grassroots group of artists worked in collaboration with business and public sector partners to build one of the most recognized cultural districts in the nation from the ground up. Engaged residents and artists coupled with receptive and supportive city leadership developed innovative policy tools at the municipal level as part of this success. Roosevelt Row was ground zero for the development of adaptive reuse policies and infill, unusual for a city with more reputation for sprawl than distinctive urban character. In less than a decade, the Roosevelt Row area has attracted more than $400 million in private development and the intersection of 3rd Street and Roosevelt is in the midst of becoming the most densely populated intersection in Phoenix.

Host & Presenters:
Mitzi Krockover - ASU Health Futures Council
Sister Adele - Circle the City
Description:
Many factors influence our health, and data reveals that our zip code may be more important to our health than our genetic code. Multiple elements including preventative health, educational attainment, economic opportunity, housing, community design and transportation, have proven to be significant contributors to making a place healthfully livable. The Health Futures Council at Arizona State University (HFC) invites you to experience an innovative approach to helping the most vulnerable in our communities, followed by a robust moderated discussion about the factors that contribute to health, and how a city can address them in ways that elevate the health of its community.
Homelessness is a growing problem in many cities. When a homeless individual is hospitalized, recuperation is nearly impossible on the streets, resulting in repeat ER visits and hospitalizations, which culminate in millions of dollars of uncompensated care for community hospitals. There is a better way that benefits both patient and community.
