NIEUW LOGO & NIEUWE BASELINE
NEW LOGO

ASTON MARTIN TAKES OFF INTO NEW ERA WITH BRAND REPOSITIONING AND NEW ICONIC WINGS LOGO 20 July 2022, Gaydon, UK: Aston Martin’s iconic wings are taking flight into an intense new era, with the British ultra-luxury marque today launching a bold new creative brand strategy and global marketing campaign to further accelerate its growth amongst new audiences. Celebrating the company’s position as makers of the most exquisitely addictive performance cars and centred on the brand idea Intensity. Driven. the creative identity builds on Aston Martin’s strong, established reputation for combining luxurious craftsmanship and sophisticated design with high-octane emotion and intense driving pleasure, as defined by breath-taking new models such as DBX707, V12 Vantage and the uncompromising Aston Martin Valkyrie. The strategic repositioning is the largest investment in Aston Martin’s brand for more than a decade and strengthens its position at the pinnacle of the performance ultra-luxury segment. It builds on Aston Martin’s growing appeal to a wider, affluent global audience strategically targeted by the brand, whilst underpinning its core values. In addition to the new visual and verbal expression, the radical redesign includes a contemporary update to the iconic wings, created by the

manufacturer’s world-renowned design function in collaboration with acclaimed British art director and graphic designer Peter Saville. In physical form, the new wings design is hand-crafted by artisans in Birmingham’s jewellery quarter and will be applied for the first time on Aston Martin’s next generation of sports cars, which will further enhance Aston Martin’s focus on ultra-luxury, performance and driving intensity. It is the first major update to the marque since 2003 and only the eighth time in Aston Martin’s 109-year history that it has been significantly adjusted. To mark the launch, Aston Martin has released behind-thescenes photography of the unique jewelling process at Vaughtons studio in Birmingham, the 203-year-old silversmiths firm famed for crafting the Football Association Cup and medals for the 1908 London Olympics. This weekend, the Aston Martin Aramco Cognizant F1TM Team will proudly feature the new wings on its livery for the French Grand Prix. Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the brand’s first Grand Prix entry, Aston Martin will symbolically race with its original button logo on the nose of its cars, mirroring the marque featured on its first Grand Prix entries in 1922. Intensity. Driven. is brought to life in a breathless short film, featuring all five of Aston Martin’s current high-performance production models. Conveying the feeling of driving and the emotional connection drivers have with their cars, the film showcases the stimulating physiological effects of driving an Aston Martin, with sensorial data visualisations of pupil dilation and heartrate obtained through biometric testing during thrilling high-speed laps in an Aston Martin Valkyrie, the ultimate hypercar.
NEW LOGO
A series of high-impact social, digital, and print assets - featuring evocative imagery and emotive, sophisticated short and long form copy celebrating Aston Martin’s passion for craftsmanship, attention to detail and winning performance - will also be released globally.
“As we approach an exciting moment of product evolution, the design of the new wings was no different. Every millimetre of each line - of each shape within the new wings, are drawn forward from the depths of our 109-year Aston Martin creative wellspring.
Renato Bisignani, Head of Global Marketing and Communications at Aston Martin said: “Building on our return to the pinnacle of motorsport in Formula One, the launch of Intensity. Driven. marks the next phase in our evolution of the Aston Martin brand, as we unleash its global potential and maximise our unique position at the cutting-edge of ultra-luxury and high performance.
“Adding Peter Saville, an icon in British graphic design and an inspirational creative figure to me personally, took our exploration and evolution of the wings to another level. And now, to see this new identity, hand-crafted in physical form at Birmingham’s jewellery quarter, is a proud moment for everyone involved. It’s the first step to the wings taking centre stage on our next generation of ultra-luxury performance sports cars.”
“Retaining the elegance and sophistication that our brand and products are revered for worldwide, this emotionally led creative direction dials up the bolder, edgier, and more intense characteristics that have always underscored Aston Martin. “Whilst engaging our fiercely loyal customer base, we believe this new dimension will capitalise on the growing demand from a new generation of Aston Martin customers, with more than 60% of our current sales new to the brand.”
Peter Saville said: “The Aston Martin wings update is a classic example of the necessary evolution of logotypes of provenance. “Subtle but necessary enhancements not only keep forms fresh, but allow for new technologies, situations and applications to be accommodated in the future. The process was one of clarifying and emphasising the key feature of the Aston Martin marque.” «
Marek Reichman, Executive Vice President and Chief Creative Officer of Aston Martin said: “Because we are designing to make people fall in love, to connect with the hearts and minds of our customers, every object we design at Aston Martin has deep meaning and intention and is created with honesty and emotion.

V12 VANTAGE ROADSTER

INGENIEURS-
VERSIE

SANLORENZO ATTENDED THE CANNES YACHTING FESTIVAL 2022 WITH TWO REVOLUTIONARY MODELS Sanlorenzo attended the Cannes Yachting Festival 2022, the show that opened the events of the new nautical season held from 6 to 11 September in the heart of the Côte d’Azur, during which it presented the world premiere of its latest two new models: the semi-displacement navetta SD90 and the open coupé SP110. SD90 and SP110 reconfirm the shipyard’s attention to sustainability issues and its desire to continue to create projects with a green approach, which, alongside extreme attention to detail and the more emotional aspects of living at sea, can be combined with an increasing focus on reducing consumption and the use of materials from alternative sources.

SD90 Entry-level of the revamped SD line, SD90 is the third chapter in a success story that began with the SD96 and SD118, which bears the signature of Zuccon International Project for the exterior design and Patricia Urquiola for the interior. SD90 is a project that focuses on transversal technological efficiency, both in terms of performance and material research. The external lines give shape to a surprising product in terms of volumes and design, structured on two and a half decks with an open fly bridge. It is configured with a lower deck and main deck with a layout designed to guarantee the boat’s maximum liveability, as witnessed by the new solutions introduced both externally and internally that give a totally revised perception of space compared to other yachts of the same range. The interior design of the SD90 is by Patricia Urquiola who, in her third collaboration with Sanlorenzo, interprets the spaces, bringing her own vision on board with an approach closely linked to transformability. The spaces of the SD90 are permeated by a style that strongly recalls the marine world and that in every detail seeks the maximum connection between interior and exterior. Patricia Urquiola, who is strongly inspired by sustainability criteria in her designs, has taken great care in researching and using raw materials from alternative sources, with a view to the circularity of materials.

SP110 With the new SP110 model, the first open coupé in the history of Sanlorenzo, the company enters the world of sports yachts and does so with a revolutionary proposal. which breaks from convention by combining a green awareness and unique comfort with unparalleled performance. SP110 is created by Zuccon International Project Studio (exterior lines), Piero Lissoni (interiors), under the supervision of Tilli Antonelli. The first yacht in the SP - “Smart Performance” range, the SP110 aims to guarantee high performance with maximum energy efficiency thanks to a fractional propulsion system consisting of three significantly smaller engines with an optimal power-to-weight ratio. The use of various weight-saving solutions, such as the use of lightweight materials, further optimises consumption and performance. Fundamental to the realisation of the SP110 is the hull design by Marco Arnaboldi, optimised for use with hydrojet propulsion, and as central to its sustainability: the boat is equipped with an energy recovery system that uses monocrystalline solar panels.

The Zuccon International Project interprets the exteriors by creating new stylistic features that strongly identify the new range, while maintaining continuity with Sanlorenzo’s tradition. The strong emotional character of this vessel is emphasised by its unusual shapes, its proportions, its aerodynamic lines, as well as by the livery, which departs from the shipyard’s more traditional colours to draw closer to the more characteristic colours of sports boats. SP110 is a two-deck yacht that features an unprecedented layout, consisting of large surfaces that can be used in a variety of ways, for an unequalled interior and exterior liveability on a yacht of this type. The interior spaces, designed by Piero Lissoni, are articulated on two floors that are not divided from each other, amounting to a “vertical loft”, which encourages and simplifies conviviality, and results in a decidedly unexpected layout.

designed under the supervision of W.O. Bentley.”

Si l’on questionne à n’importe quel amateur d’Anglaises anciennes quel modèle populaire lui viendrait automatiquement à l’esprit, tous citeront à coup sûr la mythique MGB.

Lagonda’s V12 was an ostentatious pre-war masterpiece that delivered luxury and performance in spades. Its allure remains undimmed to this day. If, by mentally digesting facts and figures, and weights and measures, you can generally imagine what most old cars are like to drive (without actually having to get behind the wheel), it sometimes feels as if there are not many surprises left. Jaded? I hope not. But I cannot deny that the number of untried cars that retain a high intrigue factor – a nagging urge to know what they are all about, good or bad – is shrinking all the time. It remains a pretty lengthy inventory, mind: 250GTOs and GT40s make the cut, and who wouldn’t want a pedal in the Uhlenhaut 300SLR Coupé? But by no means are all of the candidates quick, rare, valuable or even conventionally desirable. Moskvichs, rearengined Škodas and Bond Bugs come to mind just as easily, but also a slew of heavyweight 1930s machinery that has tended to be outside my post-war comfort zone. You have to be careful what you wish for. I hated the only Duesenberg I have driven, and I’m prepared to be disappointed by oddities such as the Autovia, the Standard Flying V8 and the Crossley Burney Streamline, which were probably rare cars for good reasons. It is an ever- changing list that I will likely never finish, but within it the lure and mystique of the Lagonda V12 has remained persistent and hard to ignore. Like all the best cars, the Lagonda V12 has a good story behind it. Colourful tycoon Alan Good rescued Lagonda in 1935 and lured a disillusioned WO Bentley, whose contract at Rolls-Royce had finished. Buoyed by the firm’s victory at Le Mans that year, the new boss told his Staines workforce they were going to build ‘the best car in the world’. Arguably, they did. Everything about WO’s new V12 was un compromising, with no thought given to what it would cost to build or what customers might pay. At just under £1200 (with the factory saloon body), it was a car beyond the wildest imaginings of most people at a time when a new Austin Ruby was £125 and the average annual salary was less than £200. But it all depended on your point of comparison: Britain’s other V12 supercar of the era – the 7.3-litre Rolls-Royce Phantom III – cost £2600 in chassis form only.

The flagship Lagonda had a cheaper in-house rival for those who didn’t need the ultimate 12-cylinder refinement and urge: the Meadowsengined 4½-litre LG6 sat on the same chassis if you wanted to approach the ton in a less complex – but equally handsome – six-cylinder Lagonda. The V12, meanwhile, was rated at 42bhp under the RAC system, so buyers paid £42 a year in tax – roughly a domestic servant’s salary at the time. RAC horsepower ratings had for decades wedded British engineers to a low-revving, long-stroke, narrow-bore formula that attracted less tax. But Bentley wanted a high-revving – for the ’30s – and relatively short-stroke engine that would push a large saloon along at a minimum of 100mph and cruise at 85mph on Europe’s new fast, open superhighways, while retaining the sort of top-gear elasticity that reduced gearchanges to a minimum. His aim was a top gear that would take you from rest to 110mph. Bentley claimed that his V12, which made extensive use of Chromidium and Duralumin alloys in its construction and was designed with the help of ex-Rolls-Royce engineer Stewart Tresilian and gearbox man Charles Sewell, would go 250,000 miles between rebuilds. In fact, both of Britain’s 1930s V12s earned poor reputations in service, at a time when technical ambitions were, perhaps, ahead of materials technology. Which was the better car depended on what kind of body was fitted, and what sort of motoring you chose to do. But there was little doubt that the more compact 4480cc, 180bhp Lagonda would have greater appeal for those who wanted to do their own driving. The Lagonda V12 was first seen at Olympia in 1936 alongside the new Bentley-designed LG6, but the prototype had wooden engine parts and a twin-choke downdraught carb rather than the twin SUs that were eventually used. Bentley was aware of the Phantom III and impressed by its silky 7.3-litre V12. But his choice of 12 cylinders was not motivated purely by a need to curtail bragging rights in Derby or top his achievements with the magnificent 1931 8-litre: it was a practical way of increasing power without taking up greater length than a straight- six, while avoiding the high bearing loads on the crankshaft exerted by fewer but larger pistons. He schemed a handsome engine, its heads and block cast in
Chromidium (nickel-iron) and arranged in a 60º vee to allow for two light-alloy connecting rods on each crank journal. The crank was safe to 5500rpm and sat in four bearings. It was nitrided and balance-weighted, and drove two overhead camshafts – via gears and chains – working short, adjustable tappets. Two oil pumps were fed by a baffled three- gallon alloy sump. One supplied the mains and big ends, the other the valve and timing gears. Almost everything was doubled up: each bank of cylinders had its own Delco distributor and coil, there were twin oil filters and the 20-gallon, twin-filler fuel tank had two pumps. Details such as built-in ‘Jackall’ hydraulic jacking, automatic chassis lubrication and thermostatic radiator shutters indicated that this was a car aiming for the highest contemporary standards. Build quality was also of the best, and in the Staines factory it was obsessively pursued: new engines were run ‘light’ for five hours, tested for full power then stripped and rebuilt, with freshly ground-in valves, then tested again before being given a 300-mile road run. Structurally, the focus was on a low centre of gravity in a chassis of welded box-section, 8in deep in places. It was ruggedly cross-braced, although the actual gauge of the steel used was not particularly heavy, to save weight. The gearbox sat separately from the engine to make room for extra bracing, with the resulting strength allowing for softer springs. The independent, ball-jointed twin-wishbone front suspension had 5ft-long torsion bars; semi- elliptics were used for the rear axle, which was American in origin but contained a Salisbury hypoid differential to keep the seating low. There were three chassis lengths available for the V12, the 10ft 4in wheelbase being mostly reserved for the beautiful Frank Feeleydesigned drophead coupés. The 11ft and 11ft 6in types tended to be for saloons and the occasional Hooper limousine. The bigger cars had taller radiators to maintain visual harmony, but the Lucas P100 headlights were common to all.

Feeley’s factory sports-saloon bodies were hard to improve on, which is why coachwork by outside firms is not so often seen on the V12s, of which 100 are thought to survive. FXB 119, bodied by Freestone and Webb in the razor- edge style on the shorter wheelbase, was supplied new to Miss Marion Mathieson of Park Gardens, Glasgow, in May 1939. Miss Mathieson was the sister of buccaneering privateer racing driver TASO Mathieson (C&SC, June 2020), who also owned a V12 Lagonda. Second owner Edward Behrens – from 1947 to ’55 – was a financier, banker and early patron of Francis Bacon (Behrens owned a London art gallery, so presumably could have afforded something much newer). After the third owner, a Mr Adams, the trail goes cold, but we do know that FXB 119 ended up in Switzerland in the ’90s, where it had some refurbishment, before appearing at the Bonhams’ Mercedes-Benz World sale in 2011. Today, despite having had various work done at specialists Bishopgray and Alpine Eagle, the Lagonda is still very original and showing a believed correct 57,450 miles. “Take it where you like,” says Vintage & Prestige supremo Richard Biddulph. “In fact, take it up the motorway – but watch the brakes.” The squat and beautifully proportioned Freestone and Webb lines are best described as ‘sporting formal’, and are somewhat akin to the bodies found on the straight-eight Daimlers by the same coachbuilder pre- and post-war. Only the right-hand side mount contains a spare wheel; the other side acts as a cover for the built-in jacking hydraulics, plus tools and an inspection light. Centre-hinged ‘suicide’ front doors were still the rule rather than the exception in the late 1930s, but, upon sliding backsidefirst on to the almost bucket-type seats, you at least don’t risk getting

a gearlever up your trouser leg: the Lagonda has a workmanlike centre change operating in a balljoint on the floor. The doors shut like a Mk1 British Rail first- class carriage. Settling back into a beautifully patinated black leather interior with smooth seat cushions and cosy rear quarters, you notice the huge sunvisors to match the West of England cloth headlining and the tiny back window, which gives privacy for the rear occupants but a huge blindspot for the driver. The window winders have a silky, low-geared action, and there are delightful little catches for the door locks and quarterlights. The chromed Art Deco-style heater by your ankles looks good and works well, or for fresh air you can wind out the top-hinged windscreen. There are narrow but deep lockable gloveboxes on either end of the dashboard, with the big, chrome-bezelled speedometer and rev counter as a centrepiece.

“The V12 was the crowning achievement of WO Bentley’s career and easily the best car ever to wear the Lagonda badge” Most of the important functions are in a switch box to the left, but a loud/soft control for the hooters behind the steering wheel catches the eye. The seats are close together and you do feel the absence of a centre armrest. The sound of the starter, somewhat high- pitched and almost aeronautical, flows seamlessly into the smooth pick-up of 12 cylinders. The engine is silken but not entirely silent and set to run fast on the steering boss controls (which also work the hard/soft setting for the rear dampers) while it warms up. With synchromesh on second, third and top in the Lagonda-built G80 gearbox, shifting ratios is no problem. The precise and well- damped lever works across a narrow gate that occasionally catches you out, but the synchros are effective and the gears are quiet, as is the whole car as an entity – although I’m not sure if, as a passenger, I’d quite

be nodding off at 100mph as The Autocar reported in its ecstatic 1938 road test. The weekly magazines loved the V12 and didn’t need much of an excuse to drive one: when the The Motor told how it had touched 109mph in a Lagonda V12, questions were asked in the House of Commons about public safety. You don’t need bottom gear often – you can pull away almost as quickly in second and then, if you’re feeling lazy, go straight to top. Full exploitation of the gears produces thrusting acceleration more akin to a post-war MkVII Jag than a big pre-war saloon. The next impression is how well the car rides and how eagerly it corners. The skinny 18in tyres tend to follow ruts, but in other respects there is a 1950s feel to the handling, which is far from unwieldy as long as you’re willing to put in some police Wolseley- style wheel-feeding on roundabouts. There is more than enough power to break away the tail, but the giant four-spoke wheel (you need its size for low-speed manoeuvring), connects to a fairly direct linkage so keeping things tidy is easy. Tight turnarounds aren’t an issue thanks to the decent lock: just keep the wheels rolling and an eye on that blindspot.
must have been sensational in the 1930s, and today you get the sense that the Lagonda wants to surge past slow- moving moderns. Only the knowledge that they can stop a lot faster prevents you from doing so. Giving engineers free rein to pursue their ideals doesn’t always work, but the fact that only 189 V12 Lagondas were ever built is probably as much down to the outbreak of WW2 as it was buyer resistance to the car’s price and complexity. The two-year wait for the first production V12s probably didn’t do much to boost customers’ confidence, but development would almost certainly have continued had the war not started. Deliveries carried on into 1940, mainly for American buyers at the end: when it was shown at New York in 1939, the V12 Rapide was noted to be the most expensive car on display that year. With four SU carburettors and a 115mph top speed it was probably the fastest as well, this induction set-up having been derived from the lightweight two-seater V12s that had finished third and fourth at Le Mans that year.
The pedals are close together, so it’s easy to press the clutch and brake at the same time until you get used to the spacing. The clutch is not too heavy – and easy to control – but, as Biddulph warned, the brakes are deeply uninspiring despite the impressive dimensions of the drums and the twin master cylinders. The car always stops in time – and in a straight line – but the long travel and uncertain response are inhibiting.
That wasn’t the end of the V12 story. During WW2 Lagonda supplied 100 units to the Navy to use in explosive-packed launches intended to pierce the armour of unsuspecting battleships. The V12 also briefly replaced Isotta Frachini engines in a new torpedo-boat design by Vosper, the firm responsible for Sir Malcolm Campbell’s Blue Bird K4. When it became clear that the V12 needed regular 18-hour overhauls, however, the Admirality switched to Ford V8s. In peacetime two cars were built up out of parts, but the size, complexity and thirst of the V12 meant it wasn’t a saleable product for the austerity years.
That’s a shame, because the V12, with its magnificent views along the bonnet to those gleaming P100s, feels otherwise like a chariot of the gods. It revs sweetly, smoothly and freely to 4500rpm and beyond, covering the ground with almost indecent haste for an 85-year-old car. Accompanied by its lusty turbine hum, its dominance of other traffic
The V12 was the crowning achievement of WO Bentley’s career and easily the best car ever to wear the Lagonda badge; it exceeded my expectations (a rare occurrence). In a world of hype it is a car that actually looks as if it’s worth its £165,000 price-tag, which is even rarer. I’m looking forward to driving another. «

DOMINATOR 1972 ASTON MARTIN V8
Clearly the V8 had potential on track, and two former Rolls Royce engineers – Robin Hamilton and David Jack – took notice, creating the RHAM/1 le Mans dubbed ‘The Muncher’. Jack then started Aston Engineering in 1983 and, the following year, teamed up with gentleman racer Mike Cousin, who was beginning in his first season behind the wheel of his 1972 Aston Martin V8. Were they to know they would develop one of the most unhinged Astons to ever stalk the UK’s racing circuits mid the 1980s. Jack immediately got to work. The luxurious interior was stripped out and replaced with a hardcore racing cage. Power steering was thrown in the bin, and the doors and hood were replaced with fiberglass. The devotion to save weight was admirable. Jack managed to increase power up to 470bhp with Weber carburettors bored to 50mm, Vantage inlet and exhaust valves, custom camshaft profiles, and a custom exhaust. Compared to what was to come, this was still a relatively stock engine, and yet it still boasted 100hp more than its Italian rivals. However, Jack and the boys weren’t satisfied, the Aston V8 went thus from a race-prepped road car to an all-out track monster. Camshaft were replaced with the
66 1 VIRAGE MAGAZINE 23
company’s own, and the pistons were replaced with Cosworth parts to increase the compression; power was now up to 490bhp. Handling had to be improved too, and so the engine was moved back by 300mm and lowered by 80mm for a better weight distribution. The modifications continued as the intake pipes and a dry sum pump were borrowed from the Lola T70, which competed at Le Mans in 1967, and a tiny 19-litre fuel tank was placed in the rear. The car only needed to complete 10 laps, after all. The wheels were wrapped in enormous racing slicks: the rear tyres were 330mm wide and were borrowed from the Cam-AM racing series.
ASTON MARTIN V8
With the mechanical aspects of the car significantly improved, work began on the exterior, where the nose-line was lowered closer to the tarmac and a different front splitter and spoiler were added for extra downforce. What Jack had created was nothing short of a nightmare for the opposition, and in 1986 the team won the ASCAR trophy in the modified class… still running stock brakes! For 1987, they finally improved the V8’s stopping power with ventilated AP discs, while the suspension was improved with rose joints on the brake reaction strut and roll bar. The monstrous Aston with Cousins behind the wheel proved a lethal combination yet again, winning 8 out 11 Intermarque races, starting with back to back victories at Silverstone in both wet and dry conditions against a swarm of angry Porsches. In 1988, more power piled on yet again, thanks to Lucas slide injection, alloy cylinder lines, higher lift camshafts, and slightly larger valves in new cylinder heads, all alongside further weight-saving measures. This brought the snarling 530bhp Aston V8 down to 1115kg. To mark this occasion, the team changed the mostly green paint-job to the two-tone white and grey livery you see here.
However, the lack of centre-lock hubs would become quite a disadvantage, resulting in an unlucky year for Jack and Cousin. In its final configuration, the monster made between 530 and 540bhp, weighted in at a scant 1030kg, and was capable of 0-60mph in 4,7 secs with a top speed of 167mph. With legendary courses such as Donington Park, Silverstone and Mallory Park on its CV, the car appeared on Peter Möller’s radar. End of 1988, he added it to his collection, where it has remained until today. We spoke with Peter: ‘It’s a dream to have the car. Just to look at is amazing. It could probably still do some decent lap times, but the development is not there, the car is exactly the same as it was in 1988. I had a brief stint driving it in the 1990s at Bromma Airport in Stockholm, where they have a test track, and we were the fastest there for four years. This Aston is a very analogue, brutal machine and it’s extremely unforgiving because it’s just a shell with a massive engine. Other cars I’ve driven are refined and accommodate the driver, but this isn’t like that at all. It’s just mechanically brutal!’ «

GEELY

1994 Virage Prince of Wales

THE ASTON MARTIN VIRAGE CELEBRATES HER 30TH BIRTHDAY One of Aston Martin’s most memorable and desired ‘upgrade packages’ is celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2022, we are talking about the impressive Aston Martin Virage, but not the regular model, which was introduced in 1989 already, but the 1992 Aston Martin Works 6.3-Liter conversion, which happens to be an elaborate upgrade package over the standard Virage made possible by Aston Martin’s Customer Service Division, this ‘upgrade’ made the first entirely new Aston Martin the most powerful sports car at the time, and it wasn’t just a serious power increase, this package came with substantial modifications to the suspension, the braking and even the famous styling. It might come as a surprise, but this new 6.3-Liter V8 was born in motorsport, in the late 80s Aston Martin created their AMR1 Group C race car to compete in the World Sports Prototype Championship in 1989, their racing department took the original, all-alloy 5.3-Liter V8 up to a 6.0 displacement before settling on an even larger 6.3-Liter version, it is this four-valve V8 that would become an option on the then brand new Aston Martin Virage, just to put this into perspective, the ‘standard’ Virage came with the 5.3-Liter V8 and 330 bhp with a torque figure of 350 lb/ft … the bigger 6.3 conversion package would
up that to 500 bhp and 480 lb/ft, note that a massive 400 lb/ft of that was already available at just 2,500 rpm, resulting in a mostly flat torque curve. The results were staggering back in 1992 for a GT sports car like this, while she still put 1,969 kg on the scale, hardly a lightweight, with 4,737 mm in length and almost two meters in width, this lady took just 5.1 seconds to reach 62 mph from a standstill, reaching 100 mph from 0 in a mere 11.5 seconds, the top speed of this luxury cruiser was reached at about 174 mph thanks to engine modifications by famous Cosworth, more importantly, real racing pistons, a new crankshaft, modified cylinder heads, and new inlet camshafts, combined with a bespoke Weber/Alpha sequential fuel injection, a seriously re-mapped engine management system, and as a final touch, special exhaust catalysts. The Aston Martin Virage 6.3 Conversion came with bespoke OZ Racing wheels, 10.5×18 inch fitted with 285/45 ZR Goodyear Eagle tires covering a brake system derived straight from the AMR1 Group C racecar, ventilated and cross-drilled with an electronically controlled fourchannel anti-lock system to keep those massive 14-inch diameter front disk brakes from locking up, at the time these were the largest discs

fitted to a production road car, and these special modifications were applied to the suspension too for this upgrade kit, the wishbone/coil spring front suspension and the de Dion rear tube, with radius arms and Watt linkage, featured newly-designed rose joints all round together with uprated springs, bespoke dampers, a larger front anti-roll bar, and the fitment of an anti-roll bar at the rear. The fitment of wider wheels came with a nice added bonus, the wheel arches for this special Virage needed to be widened, which as we would expect from Aston Martin, was done by handcrafting aluminum panels, this also required extended side sills to be fitted, a different, deeper from air dam, even a special rear diffuser, and let’s not forget that intimidating rear wing on the boot, it made the Aston Martin Virage 6.3 Litre as she was aptly called, a very impressive, albeit slightly aggressivelooking, gran tourer two-seater, sure, there are rear seats, but I wouldn’t want to sit in those for a longer journey, let’s be honest. However, this Aston Martin did come with some really nice optional features, like a mini-disc player … remember those? Or how about a small television receiver and monitor for the rear seat occupants, complete with remote control mind you, so you can watch some TV while being seated in the softest Connolly leather Aston Martin could source in the Nineties, but all this came at a serious premium considering a standard Aston Martin Virage was about £140,000 back in 1992 if you ticked the ‘6.3 Conversion’ upgrade on your order form, Aston Martin would add £60,000 on top of that, still rumor has it about 60 of these £200,000 cars were built over the years, it took Aston Martin Works 12 weeks per car to complete the 6.3 conversions. Aston Martin Historian, Steve Waddingham, explained: “The Virage and Volante 6.3 conversion came at a testing time for Aston Martin. The business had experienced a boom in the late 1980s, but with the economic downturn of the early 90s sales were harder to come by. This ingenious offering created by the brand’s Customer Service Division – now Aston Martin Works – not only created a huge amount of positive media interest in the marque but also provided many of our wellheeled customers with the opportunity to acquire an iconic road car with real motorsport heritage.” Paul Spires, President of Aston Martin Works, was himself involved in the Virage 6.3 conversion project and remembers driving the development and demonstration vehicle, affectionately known today as ‘Minky’. He said: “The Virage 6.3 conversion was, and remains, a superb example of the capabilities of the department that is now Aston Martin Works. “The car was comprehensively re-engineered, and restyled, right here in Newport Pagnell. It remains a true testament to the ingenuity and vision of the Aston Martin business and I’m thrilled – but also a little shocked from a personal point of view – that we are able to celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2022.” «

WORDT DE DBR22 DE ULTIEME ASTON MARTIN RETROROADSTER?

DBR 22
