OUR TECHNOLOGY Hydrophobic Interaction Chromatography (HIC) is used to separate proteins and biomolecules based on their hydrophobic nature. Samples are applied to the HIC adsorbent in buffers containing high concentration of salt and eluted with a salt gradient. Consequently, HIC is particularly useful for purifying proteins from high ionic strength feedstocks. Astrea Bioseparations Ltd and its affiliates (Astrea Bioseparations) manufacture HIC adsorbents comprising of a range of four ligands of increasing hydrophobicity; Butyl, Hexyl, Octyl, and Phenyl coupled to our highly cross-linked near monodisperse 6% beaded agarose (PuraBead® 6HF) which gives the adsorbents excellent flow properties. These HIC adsorbents are designed for capture or intermediate purification steps for the purification of mildly hydrophobic biomolecules and are engineered for use in demanding process applications. Our four high performance HIC resins are Butyl Purabead® HF, Hexyl Purabead® HF, Octyl Purabead® HF and Phenyl Purabead® HF. These adsorbents have different levels of hydrophobicity determined by their ligand structures, ligand densities and hydrocarbon chain length. Best practice when evaluating the adsorbents is to screen all four HIC’s and identify which of the products is most suited to your process or application.
Our proprietary PuraBead® 6HF base matrix technology with a near mono-disperse particle size distribution which provides high resolution, reduces the risk of column fouling and renders the adsorbents easy to pack.

The adsorbents are compatible with most biological buffers and commonly encountered buffer additives and are stable in up to 1.0 M sodium hydroxide which allows for stringent cleaning and sanitization protocols.

PRODUCT FORMATS Bulk Manufacture & Supply Astrea Bioseparations supplies bulk adsorbents for developmental and regulated cGMP manufacturing applications in volumes sufficient to meet the requirements of the largest biomanufacturing processes. Our HIC adsorbents are manufactured in Astrea Bioseparations’ controlled environment manufacturing facility under an accredited ISO 9001 quality system with regulatory support files available on request.
