A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Principal Jim Walker with members of Andrew’s Little Irish.
Dear O’Dea Community, At O’Dea High School, our mission-centered foundation continues to guide and inspire everything we do. Although our student body continues to evolve and the Christian Brothers are no longer physically present on campus, the charism of Blessed Edmund Rice remains deeply embedded in our school culture. This enduring spirit is strengthened through our ongoing involvement and membership in the North American Province of Edmund Rice Consortium Schools, all of whom are united by his founding vision. This fall, O’Dea participated in several activities to strengthen our Edmund Rice connection including the Called and Gifted program, attended by faculty members in California, the Action Student Leadership Workshop held in New Jersey, and an Immersion and Service trip in Brownsville, Texas. In addition to these opportunities, I also recently attended Edmund Rice School meetings in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, where I connected with fellow administrators and learned about the fantastic work being accomplished at other member schools. These experiences underscore the importance of honoring our founding legacy as an Edmund Rice School while continuing to build relationships and a sense of connectedness with educators, students,

and school communities who share in our mission of providing a quality Catholic education. The professional relationships I have formed with other leaders in Edmund Rice Schools offer a wealth of knowledge to advance our programming and strengthen our commitment to excellence. As part of the Edmund Rice School Network, we carry forward a shared mission that transforms lives and builds communities rooted in faith and a sense of belonging. This is the work that matters most, and it is as vital today as ever. I invite you to join us in realizing this mission. Whether through prayer, participation in school events, or sharing your time and talents, your engagement strengthens our community. It ensures that Blessed Edmund Rice’s legacy continues to thrive at O’Dea. Together, we can inspire and empower the next generation of leaders grounded in character, faith, and service. Peace and Roll Irish,
Jim Walker Principal

MENTORSHIP. CONNECTION. OPPORTUNITY. O’Dea provides an exceptional academic education, while teaching young men the importance of character and service to others. United by a brotherhood that lasts a lifetime, our young men not only graduate, prepared for college and career, but with a sense of community that makes the O’Dea experience truly second to none. These great aspects of O’Dea all came together in one night at the ballpark and truly showcased the positive impacts of an O’Dea education.

THE FIRST PITCH
JOURNALISM IN ACTION
On September 24th, Nate Burleson ‘99, Emmy Award–winning broadcaster, CBS Mornings co-host, NFL Today analyst, and former NFL wide receiver, threw out the first pitch at the Seattle Mariners game. This is such a great honor for one of our amazing alumni. And because Nate learned about the importance of giving back while he was a student at O’Dea, he also took the time to pay it forward to three of our current students.
Ivan Quispe ’26, Torsten Schenck ’27, and Gene Woodard III ’27, along with their Sports Journalism teacher, Will Chambers, had the opportunity to join Nate at the ballpark. With support from the Mariners, the students practiced their journalism skills by interviewing Nate and taking photos at T-Mobile Park. This experience gave them a unique chance to take their classroom lessons to the real world. Nate spoke with the students about perseverance, gratitude, and faith, values he says were rooted in his O’Dea experience. He also shared that O’Dea is where he learned what it means to lead. His words reflected the strength of the O’Dea brotherhood where mentorship, connection, and opportunity go hand in hand.
THE GAME
nearby. Instead of keeping it, the man turned and handed the ball to Marcus, a gesture that stunned the crowd and quickly made headlines.
THIS IS THE O’DEA BROTHERHOOD IN ACTION.
That same night, another story captured the spirit of O’Dea’s mission when Marcus Ruelos, son of Galan ’91 and a student at St. Anthony, found himself at the center of a viral moment of kindness. When Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh hit his record-setting 60th home run of the season, the ball ricocheted off Marcus’ mother and into the hands of another fan
Sports memorabilia experts valued the ball at more than $50,000, but Marcus chose to return it to Cal, saying, “Money doesn’t matter. This is for him. It’s his special moment with his family, just like we had ours.” His father reflected on the moment, sharing, “It was a random act of kindness that made a lifetime memory for our family. Kindness still matters in this world.”
This one night at the ballpark is an extraordinary example of what it means to be a part of the O’Dea community. It is an understanding that character, faith, and service make a difference. It is about the learned values passed from one generation to the next. It is about giving back.

STUDENT LIFE SUMMER OF DISCOVERY: FRED HUTCH INTERNSHIP This summer, André Franklin ’26 was one of twenty-two interns, selected from more than 500 applicants, to join the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center’s Summer High School Internship Program. Over the eight-week program, André worked in the Clinical Trials Pathology Lab, gaining hands-on experience and exploring the world of biomedical science. Reflecting on the experience, he shared: “I gained research experience, learned from incredible mentors, and deepened my passion for science and medicine.” André’s drive and commitment to learning exemplifies the excellence and ambition of the O’Dea student body.
FALL FUN AND BROTHERHOOD: A SPIRITED START TO THE YEAR AT O’DEA In September, the Class of 2029 kicked off their first fall at O’Dea with a trip to remember! Our newest class of O’Dea freshman teamed up with Holy Names Academy for the annual trip to the Washington State Fair, a long-standing tradition that brings together laughter, friendship, and plenty of food adventures. But the fun didn’t stop there. Across campus, O’Dea students shared that same excitement, creativity, and school spirit. Homecoming Week brought energy to every hallway with themed dress days, House competitions, and an incredible assembly that led up to a spirited Homecoming game and dance. As Halloween rolled in, students showed their creative side during the annual pumpkin carving competition. From spooky designs to clever O’Dea-themed creations, the contest brought plenty of laughs (and a bit of friendly rivalry) among the Houses. From the fairgrounds to the classroom, the start of the school year was packed with connection, pride, and plenty of brotherhood, proving that at O’Dea, there’s always something to celebrate.
6
ROBOTICS CLUB SPARKS INNOVATION There’s something new and exciting taking shape at O’Dea! This fall, students Benn Bergholz ’27, Simon Baillie ’28, and Daryl Fussell ’28 teamed up to launch a new Robotics Club, bringing enhanced innovation to campus. “We wanted to bring more STEM opportunities to O’Dea,” Benn shared. “We’re excited to teach people about robotics and increase interest in STEM topics.” The club’s mission is to inspire curiosity, collaboration, and creativity through hands-on learning. Members are exploring the fundamentals of robotics design, coding, and engineering, while laying the groundwork for future projects and continued growth.
WHERE OPPORTUNITY MEETS EXPERIENCE At O’Dea, students have incredible opportunities to gain unique access to alumni, community leaders, and industry professionals who share their experiences and inspire our young men to lead with purpose and think about their futures. These speaker visits, which take place on a regular basis, highlight the powerful connections that make the O’Dea experience truly exceptional and provide support that lasts a lifetime.
FOX 13’s TAYLOR WINKEL In November, O’Dea students had the opportunity to learn from Taylor Winkel, anchor and reporter for FOX 13 Seattle, who visited campus to speak with students in our Sports Journalism Class and Digital Media Club. She gave students a glimpse into the fast-paced world of broadcast journalism, showing how storytelling and media production come together in real-world settings.
CAPTAIN JIM BRITT ’97 Students from O’Dea’s Leadership: Theory & Practice class had the opportunity to engage in a discussion with Seattle Police Department Captain, Jim Britt ’97. Captain Britt shared what true leadership looks like, grounded not in authority, but in service. He reminded students that leadership isn’t a title, it’s a responsibility, and one that carries real impact in every walk of life.
DR. ALEX KURES ’14 The same class also had the opportunity to learn from Dr. Alex Kures ’14. A proud O’Dea alumnus, Alex now serves as a Family Medicine Resident at PeaceHealth. During his visit, he spoke about his journey, from his years at O’Dea to his experiences in the medical field, emphasizing that true leadership is rooted in service, empathy, and integrity. O’Dea is deeply grateful for alumni like him who continue to give back, mentor others, and inspire the next generation of Irish leaders.

FAITH & SERVICE DUBLIN KICKS OFF THE YEAR WITH SERVICE AND BROTHERHOOD Dublin House kicked off the school year with purpose through a community service event on September 13th. More than 80 students, families, and faculty joined forces to clean up the streets of First Hill as part of O’Dea’s partnership with the City of Seattle’s Adopt-A-Street Program. Led by House Dean Will Chambers, Vice-Captain Patrick Mirkin ’26 and Dublin House Captain Wyatt Sanford ’26, the effort reflected the school’s commitment to service and leadership. Many local residents stopped to thank the students, making the day both impactful and inspiring.
BUILDING CONNECTIONS THROUGH FAITH O’Dea was honored to welcome students, faculty, and parents from St. Therese Catholic Academy for Mass on October 16th. The celebration was a meaningful reflection of our shared faith and common bond between our two school communities. Following Mass, O’Dea students, many of whom are proud St. Therese alumni, enjoyed lunch with the happy and energetic St. Therese students. It was a privilege to host this incredible group of students!

HONORING A LEGACY OF FAITH AND SERVICE For six decades, Father Michael G. Ryan, honorary O’Dea grad of the class of 2019, served people in the Archdiocese of Seattle with wisdom, faith, and unwavering dedication. As Pastor of St. James Cathedral for nearly forty years, he fostered a vibrant, welcoming community rooted in compassion and care. Throughout his ministry, Father Ryan was also a steadfast supporter of O’Dea, enriching our school through relevant and thought-provoking homilies during Mass for our students, his belief in the value of an O’Dea education, and his advocacy for decisions that strengthened our future. Father Ryan has two particularly important legacies tied to O’Dea. The first is a family connection: his dad was a member of our first graduating class in 1926. The
second is a cherished story he shared for many years at our Mother and Son Blessing, a story that highlighted the vital role of the women in our lives. In it, he recounted the sacrifice his mother made while he studied in Rome and the joy of their reunion after four years apart, leaving an enduring impression on everyone who heard it. After thirty-seven years, Father Ryan has transitioned to a new role as Pastor Emeritus. We celebrate his remarkable legacy, rooted in humility, intellect, and care for others. In his honor, we are proud to establish the Russell ‘26 and Marjorie Ryan Endowment Fund. This fund will provide need-based financial aid to an O’Dea student in memory of Father Ryan’s parents, whose influence has shaped our community through the life and work of their son.
If you are interested in contributing to the Russell ‘26 and Marjorie Ryan Endowment Fund in honor of Father Ryan, his parents, and their legacy at O’Dea, you can do so by visiting our website: odea.org/support-odea/endowments
FAITH IN ACTION: FORMER O’DEA EDUCATORS CONTINUE TO LEAD We are inspired by our former educators who have continued their careers leading others in Catholic schools. Principal Walker had the opportunity to spend time with just a few of them at a recent Archdiocesan professional development day. Their dedication reflects the lasting impact of the O’Dea mission, forming leaders who continue to inspire beyond Terry Avenue. ATHLETICS THE WINNINGEST COACH IN WASHINGTON STATE History was made this fall when Head Football Coach Monte Kohler earned win number 395 and became the all-time leader in Washington State high school football victories. But Coach Kohler’s true legacy isn’t measured in numbers. It’s written in the many lives he has impacted. After starting his coaching career in Montana with 8-man football, Coach Kohler came to O’Dea in 1985 and built a program defined by heart, discipline, and brotherhood. Over 41 seasons, he won six state championships, never lost more than three games in a season, and guided hundreds of players to college and even some to the pros, many of whom “return to share how Monte’s influence guided them well beyond their high school years.” Principal Jim Walker states that “Monte invests in his players and staff as individuals, taking time to know their stories, celebrate their achievements, and support them through challenges.” But what truly sets Coach Kohler apart is that his care extends far beyond the field. “Coach just loves everyone,” Coach Tim Greenan added. “It doesn’t matter who you are or if you even play football. He gives you his respect, his time, and his support. He shows up for other teams, other students, and makes everyone feel seen.” As Hutton Leverett ’26 shares, “Coach Kohler is always making us better, not just as football players, but as young men. He mentors us, guides us on the right path, and sacrifices so much of his time for the team. We all love Coach Kohler and are incredibly grateful for everything he does.”
CROSS COUNTRY At forty students strong, this year’s cross-country program was a vibrant and welcoming team of studentathletes. Working with Head Coach, Jackson Derby, faculty member, and Assistant Coach David Bazzi ’96, the runners showed up each day ready to work hard and support one another. The team participated in many meets, including one weekend in Spokane where they competed in a race and also visited Gonzaga University to learn about college life and the opportunities available to student-athletes. This experience deepened their connection to each other and inspired them to think about their futures. Congratulations to the whole team for a great season and to Maddox Fox ’26 and Heath Atrosh ’27 for earning their way to the state championship meet in Pasco!

O’DEA HONORS FACULTY AND STAFF WHO HAVE RECENTLY RETIRED MIKE CROTTY After 34 years of dedicated service as a counselor, teacher and coach, Mike Crotty is retiring from his full-time role at O’Dea. Mike’s daughter shared that her father “has always believed his purpose was to help shape young men,” a calling that led him from a successful business career to O’Dea decades ago. A former Notre Dame standout, Coach Crotty brought his discipline and determination to O’Dea, helping lead multiple state-championship teams and earning four WIAA Assistant Coach of the Year awards. Students and alumni describe him as “reliable, selfless, and intentional, and every word he says matters.” Although he will no longer be at O’Dea on a full-time basis, you can still find him on the varsity football field, driving the bus, and in other roles at O’Dea where his steady leadership continues to inspire both players and colleagues.
REBECCA McPHARLIN Rebecca McPharlin, mother of Josh ’99 and Jake ’01, served in many roles during her time at O’Dea including Admissions Associate, Assistant Librarian, Mentor Teacher, Co-Moderator of the Black Students United for Excellence Club, and member of the Educational Support Team. Rebecca exemplified kindness, professionalism, and dedication to students, families, faculty, and staff. She demonstrated care, while providing accountability that fostered growth and resilience. According to Principal Jim Walker, “Rebecca’s mission-centered heart, balanced with empathy and high expectations, helped young men thrive academically, socially, and spiritually. Her influence prepared students for success.” Rebecca’s legacy inspires us all as a model of grace, strength, and commitment to the development of every student. We are grateful for the profound impact she has had on our community.
JIM WALTERS After 46 years in the classroom, including the last 25 at O’Dea, Jim Walters is stepping back to enjoy some well-deserved time off. Over the decades, he has taught numerous classes including English, Sports Medicine, Anatomy, and CPR, all with his trademark humor and dedication. His impact has extended far beyond the classroom and field, shaping countless young men through his commitment to excellence and care for every student. While he’s retiring from teaching, Mr. Walters isn’t going far as he continues to support O’Dea athletes in the training room, where his guidance and wisdom will continue to inspire future generations of Irish.

ALUMNI BROTHERHOOD THROUGH GENERATIONS This year’s freshman class brought together 44 students who share a special bond to an O’Dea alumnus. Carrying on family tradition, these sons, brothers, nephews, grandsons and more are keeping the O’Dea spirit alive and the brotherhood running deep through generations!
O’DEA ALUMNI MAKING A GLOBAL DIFFERENCE
O’Dea instills the value of service and inspires young men to make a difference in the world. We love to see our alumni making a difference, and Justin Murphy ‘18 is doing just that. During his senior year in college, Justin founded The Murph Foundation, an organization that partners with local nonprofits around the world to raise awareness of their challenges and drive meaningful change through impactful storytelling. In its first phase, the foundation was involved in projects that included installing a dishwasher at an orphanage in India, clearing unexploded bombs in Laos, and delivering a school boat to a remote community in the Philippines. Today, with fellow O’Dea alums Lucas
16
Smith ’20 and Izzy Gauyan ’20 on the team, The Murph Foundation has entered its second phase, carrying out projects in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania, all funded through grassroots donations. Reflecting on the journey, Justin shared that it has been “an incredible honor to do this work alongside Lucas and Izzy.” He credits O’Dea for “instilling in us the value of service and inspiring us to make a difference in the world.” Grounded in the belief that small acts can create lasting change, Justin’s work embodies the O’Dea spirit of character, faith, and service lived out across the globe.
COLLEGE BOUND! Members of the Class of 2025 are taking the next step in their journeys, joining top colleges and universities across the country. From the West Coast to the East Coast, O’Dea graduates continue to excel as scholars, athletes, and leaders beyond our halls.

2024-2025
ANNUAL REPORT Dear O’Dea Community, As I reflect on the past year, I am grateful for your generosity, trust, and faith that continues to sustain O’Dea High School. Your commitment ensures that our mission to form young men of character, faith, and service remains strong today and for generations to come. Thanks to your support through the capital campaign, we made significant and lasting investments in our campus. We completed essential improvements to safeguard our buildings and ensure their longevity. We also preserved and celebrated O’Dea’s rich history and Catholic identity by repairing our stained-glass window and lighting historic architectural elements of our 1923 building. Looking ahead, we are thrilled to open Kohler Field in the coming year, which will expand our campus to the south Seattle area. This transformational addition will support our athletic program and provide all students space to gather and grow. The campaign also supported the endowment fund, held at the O’Dea High School Foundation, a source of financial stability and accessibility. Assets in this fund, which are restricted for need-based financial aid, now total nearly $19 million, a remarkable increase of
20
$7 million, or nearly 60%, over the past four years. This growth, driven by both contributions and favorable market performance, enhances our ability to fund tuition assistance in perpetuity, ensuring an O’Dea education remains within reach for all qualified young men. In addition, we continue to look to the future through a thoughtful review of our organizational structure, guided by our current strategic plan. The landscape of Catholic education is evolving, and it is our responsibility to adapt while remaining true to our mission and O’Dea experience that defines our community. We look forward to sharing the results of this important work in the future. Finally, we want to thank our retiring Board members, Michael Butler ’78 (son of Joseph ’35 and father of Joey 2018), Dan Sherman (father of Kevin 2001, Mike 2005, and Brian 2007), Barbara Swann (mother of John 2017), and Todd Vacura (father of Joey 2022). We appreciate their advice and wisdom during their service. With gratitude,
Laura Weinand Chief Financial Officer
