Nestled within its rolling hills, a variety of architecture can be found from the 1800s to the present, housing a population of 2,200 friendly residents.
The seeds of the Village were planted in 1872 when the area, formerly known as Stony Creek, was donated by Peter Martin and Peter Paulus to the Milwaukee and Northern Railway Corporation for the railroad tracks and a depot. The name Fredonia, which means “free gifts” or “the land where things are done freely,” was chosen. Today, Fredonia is a growing community hosting a growing

Stony Hill School, in the Town of Fredonia (Waubeka area), is the “birthplace of National Flag Day.” This is just north of
Ozaukee County Pioneer Village, on Hwy. I, and is a great part of the tourist loop.

NEWBURG MAY BE SMALL (POP. 1,254), BUT OUR IDEAL LOCATION AFFORDS EASY ACCESS TO JUST WHAT YOU’D LIKE.
Enjoy that “Up North” sensation year-round, just a 32-minute drive north of Milwaukee. Nestled on a bend of the Milwaukee River and straddling Ozaukee and Washington counties, you’ll find the charming Village of Newburg. Approaching the village from the east on Hwy. 33, you’ll see the towering Freedom Park flags greeting you – a memorial to those who have served.
Newburg’s autumn brings the community’s fun Halloween events on the last Saturday of October, and colorful leaves provide a picturesque background to flocks of migrating birds.
The rushing spring waters of the Milwaukee River challenge kayakers and canoers, who can launch or conclude their travels next to the Newburg Bridge where Main Street crosses the river. Newburg’s riverside viewing deck at the south side of the bridge is an ideal place for watching eagles soar. Cast your fishing pole upstream and you may see a longlegged heron standing in the river — see who catches a fish first!
Warm summer weather in Newburg means fresh organic produce at Winterspring Farm (www.winterspringcsa.com), softball tournaments, the Fireman’s Picnic (end of May into June), a Lions Club Car Show (August), and a community weekend-long rummage sale (August), along with vibrant blooming of the native plant prairie at Welcome HOME B&B (www.Welcomehomebb.com).
The winter freeze ushers in ice fishing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and sledding. If indoor fun is more your style, try your luck at a game of bingo at Fireman’s Hall (facebook. com/NewburgFD/) or Sheepshead at the Newburg Community Center (www.village.newburg.wi.us), which is also available year-round to rent for your own events.
Newburg has some historic buildings and local businesses that have been community staples from the beginning. Lochen Equipment has been in business since 1899. Newburg’s Community Center was originally an 1840s sawmill, and the 1930s Reichel Brothers General Store is now a hair salon.
As you meander along Main Street, stop for a bite to eat at one of our eateries, from supper club dining to casual Friday fish fries, burgers and pizza. Ask locals about the prohibitione-era underground tunnels – we’ve heard Al Capone visited Newburg on occasion!

Plan to spend a night at a country Bed & Breakfast. Unique folk art complements natural beauty found on 18 acres of woodland and prairie at the wheelchair-friendly Welcome HOME B&B. Port Washington is reminiscent of an east coast seaside village, a harbor town that offers a beautiful breakwater out to one of the city’s two lighthouses. It boasts a number of popular restaurants, shops, galleries and a walkable downtown. In addition to the beautiful marina, the coastline around Port Washington offers beaches and clay bluffs ranging from 80 feet to 130 feet in height. Saturdays also feature a very popular lakeside beer garden with food and music. Numerous specialty food and retail shops feature everything from fish to popcorn to chocolate to a farm market. There are two popular outdoor gear stores in town, along with unique shops and boutiques – even a surf shop! Plus, if you are here on a Saturday, you
can pick up some fresh food at the downtown Farmers Market.
All of the outdoor recreational opportunities are exceptional.
Boaters love the certified Clean Marina. Bike, bird, run or hike on nearby trails. One of the trails is the free, paved recreational Ozaukee Interurban Trail. Take a ride on Southeastern Wisconsin’s premier trail through friendly communities offering activities that will please your entire group. Enjoy touring Ozaukee County while biking, in-line skating, skiing, walking or running in an off-road environment that has a gentle grade and is safe for the entire family. Unlike many shared-use trails in the State of Wisconsin,
use of the Ozaukee Interurban Trail is free for everyone and is intended for year-round use.
The Ozaukee Interurban Trail is full of exciting destinations that connect historic downtowns with natural landscapes. Views along the Trail include parks, golf courses, woodlands, wetlands, farmlands, Cedar Creek, the Milwaukee River, and Lake Michigan. The Trail is designated as a “Great Wisconsin Birding and Nature Trail” and the Ozaukee Trailside Birding Guide is available to direct Trail users to the best birding hotspots on and adjacent to the Trail.
Recent Trail improvements include new off-road segments in Mequon, Cedarburg, and Port Washington; Trail Bridge Park, a new rest area in Grafton; Belgium Trail Park; and the installation of bike repair stations in every community along the Trail.
Not ready for a 30-mile ride?
Take a shorter 5-, 10-, or 15-mile ride between Mequon, Thiensville, Cedarburg, Grafton, Port Washington and Belgium. While traveling the Trail, stop for a winery tour, enjoy a meal, and experience numerous recreational and cultural activities.
www.ozcomtbr.com
Need a getaway? Numerous lodging facilities, including bed & breakfasts, are located along the Trail. During your stay, enjoy local festivals, concerts and numerous cultural activities. The Interurban Trail connects to the Oak Leaf Trail in Milwaukee County and the Sheboygan Interurban Trail in Sheboygan County, making Ozaukee County an ideal destination for biking enthusiasts.

The main loop is a unique trail as it is located in the heart of the City of Port Washington. The trail follows Sucker Creek and crosses the creek several times during the ride.
The Route of the Badger (RotB) is working towards transforming Southeastern Wisconsin’s existing trails into a 700-mile plus trail network, spurring tourism, economic development, recreation, and bridging gaps in communities for a more connected region.
Launched in 2014 through Rails-to-Trail Conservancy (RTC), the RotB coalition spans Southeastern Wisconsin’s seven county region including Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Walworth, Washington and Waukesha Counties. With 340 miles of existing trails, the Route of
centered on a 700-mileplus regional trail system
connecting people and places.
This will be accomplished through the belief that relatively small investments building on existing infrastructure, like the Ozaukee Interurban Trail, can greatly improve connectivity within the region.
More information on the Route of the Badger initiative and related trail projects is available on the RTC website (www. railstotrails.org/ badger).
