Welcome to Oconomowoc!

I’ll be quick since this is in print, and I’m just giddy you’re reading this.

I’m Kevin Pehler, 2023 Oconomowoc, WI Citizen of the Year. I wanted to take 100 seconds and tell you what makes Oconomowoc unique to the world. Bluntly, you won’t find another spot-on earth that has the number of lakes, parks, events, and citizens rallying for one another. Our city supports and defends small businesses downtown but welcomes Big Box stores on the outskirts. We are a Norman Rockwell-esque community that strives to maintain the small-town charm. And in my opinion, the top 10 “things” that make Oconomowoc famous are:

01. GERMAN CHRISTMAS MARKET

Held Wed-Sun Thanksgiving week.

02. DOWNTOWN

Stroll the boardwalk, shop, have a meal for all price ranges. And if you come in winter, you can see our trees lit up.

03. MOONLIT MOVIES

Held throughout summer, free movie in the park for the family.

04. VGBG

Village Green Beer Garden is held the third weekend of the month during summer.

05. CHILI FEST

End of January, downtown, chili.

06. PARADES

We love our parades and they are enormous draws to the community. Thousands of families will line the streets for Memorial Day, Independence Day, Homecoming, Halloween, and Christmas parades.

07. LAKES

We have 22 and they’re all used for fishing, boating, sailing, barhopping, boat tie-ups, and shenanigans in between. We truly have it all for every season.

08. NOON YEAR’S EVE

Tucker your kids out to celebrate your own holiday at midnight. True winner for all parents with little kiddos.

09. BANDS ON THE BEACH

Free concert on the water in the iconic Bandshell. All summer these events pack City Beach.

10. FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS

Mid-August our city comes alive for a week and caps off with a worldrenowned art festival in Fowler Park.

Oconomowoc Arts Center

The OAC is the place to go in Lake Country and features a variety of shows for all ages, offering music and dance concerts, theatrical performances, comedy, special events, visual arts, community forums, and more. The OAC features

History

Oconomowoc has a rich history dating back to the 1800s when wealthy families from cities such as Chicago, St. Louis and Milwaukee discovered this area. They built summer homes and escaped the busy, hot cities to relax at the lake.

To learn more about Oconomowoc’s history, you simply need to look around you. Many of the historic mansions remain today. A great free activity in this area is the Historic Walking Tour around Fowler Lake (find out more in the Parks & Play section).
