AGM updates & Party in the Park ‘23 Following on from the success of last year’s Party in the Park, the committee intends to proceed with this year’s festivities on Saturday 24th June 2023. We urge new residents, old and young alike, to join us this summer to celebrate the wonderful community in which we live. Thank you to those of you who attended our annual AGM on Friday 25th November 2022. Thank you to our public representatives - Jim O’Callaghan TD, Ivana Bacik TD and Cllr. Mary Freehill - who also attended. The main cause of concern during the evening was the issue of control of dogs on Eaton Square. Parks provide space for dog owners to exercise their pets; however dogs also raise concerns to other park users, including fear of attack and the effects of dog fouling, which can create a barrier to their enjoyment of parks. Dog owners who use City Council parks are required under park bye-laws to prevent their dog(s) causing annoyance and worrying, are responsible for its conduct and are liable for it causing damage or injury. It is strongly advised all dogs are kept on leads after 11am & big dogs at all times. We ask residents to consider this and adhere to these rules when exercising dogs in the park at Eaton Square and to always be mindful of more vulnerable park users especially children and older persons who often avoid the park when it is overrun with dogs.

Eaton Square & Biodiversity Eaton Square is a much-loved amenity of Terenure residents. Our committee has for some time thought it would be nice idea if we could bring more biodiversity to Terenure and what better place to start than in Eaton Square. Our association had met with DCC parks team first back in 2021 about the need for improvements in the park. Our committee recently had the pleasure of attending a community biodiversity event at the Mansion House. The Lord Mayor, Caroline Conroy, is very keen to see communities thriving and working together to improve biodiversity across Dublin which also aligns with the Dublin City Council (DCC) biodiversity plan 2021-2025 and local groups can receive funding for such initiatives. What is Biodiversity? Simply put, all aspects of nature, including us, and how everything is interdependent. Healthy biodiversity provides us with clean air and water, food, soil resources, medicines and more. Research also supports the benefits that being out in nature has to our physical health and mental wellbeing. We were delighted to recently welcome Muireann Carroll to the ART Committee. Muireann is a Hannaville Park resident & hopes to lead on a community garden project for Eaton Square. We are proposing that raised beds containing pollinator friendly planting will be created in the grassland corner of Eaton Square opposite Eaton Road. We are hoping that grass that will be lifted for these beds will be used on the main green space to cover any bald patches & extra grass seed laid. The main green space, which is available for rest and play, will not be impacted by the community garden project in any other way. Our local representatives and the biodiversity officer from DCC have been very supportive of this idea as have the local schools and community groups. DCC’s Head of the Parks department as well as a team of horticulturalists will be visiting Eaton Square to discuss the proposed project. If you would like to be involved in the creation and/or maintenance of the community garden or simply have a question, idea or concern all are very much welcomed and appreciated. You can contact Muireann directly at: terenurecsi@gmail.com and keep up to date with Community garden progress on the Terenure Community Support & Integration blog: (terenurecsi.com). Carrying out these changes may take some time and the park itself may be closed off at some stage for a period of time. We will endeavour to communicate with our neighbours when this will happen so that neighbours will be forewarned. 2

Growing up in Terenure – Then & Now! Local girls, Meriel O’Brien, Alannah & Pia Butterly sat down with longstanding member of the ART Committee member, Cepta O’Keffee, to discuss what it was like growing up in Terenure when she was a young girl! The girls were armed with a series of questions to ask Cepta who has been living on our roads since 1957 and they jotted down the answers below. Cepta has been a long serving member of the ART Committee. Her uncle, Sean Fitzpatrick, was a founding member of ART. ******* How has Terenure changed since you were a young girl? There were many differences, including 5 butcher shops, the biggest grocery store was the size of Centra, no restaurants, no Presentation Secondary School, instead there was a field, but best of all there was Carroll’s sweet shop! Did you do PE and sports? There was no PE because it was considered ‘unladylike’, but there was hockey instead.
EV Charging updates from DCC
Where did you go to school and what was the uniform?
Many residents have been asking about Electronic Vehicle charging on our roads & so we followed this up with Cllr. Carolyn Moore who gave us the latest update on the process.
The school was on Crumlin Road and the uniform was pale green. I had to take a bus to school. Were there many children living on Eaton Square?
The Dublin Local Authority Electric Vehicle Charging Strategy was recently completed. DCC and the other Dublin local authorities will focus their efforts on facilitating rapid charging at destination or community charging hubs, which might be located at shopping, sports or community centres, along with petrol stations and commercial car parks.
Not many and the children who did live around the area were all the same age group over 12. What do you miss most about being a young girl? I miss having no responsibilities!
We do not know the approach that will be taken within Terenure area specifically, whether local carparks will be used for example, but DCC's EV charging strategy will not facilitate a further roll-out of on street chargers, which they argue would only add to street clutter, and instead focus what they consider more convenient rapid charge options.
