It was with deep sadness that we learned of her passing 1 year ago, on August 31, 2022. And it is with enormous gratitude to her memory and to the Mercure family that we welcome today the generosity of the donation made to the LAQ

What a wonderful legacy left by Louise Mercure and her family, who added a gift of art to Louise’s financial bequest. Over $35,000 was generously donated to the LAQ for lymphedema awareness, patient advocacy and support. For this gift, and for Louise’s inspirational role in the LAQ’s support groups, we are truly grateful.

Louise’s dedication to her condition was admirable. Her resilience, perseverance and artistry impressed many.

Educating pharmacy nurses about LYMPHEDEMA Pharmacy nurses showed in great numbers at the LAQ booth during the 4th provincial meeting of the IIPQ, held on September 30, 2023. These healthcare professionals are truly on the front line when it comes to screening for chronic edema and lymphedema. During the day, delegates enjoyed Dr. Anna Towers’ telepresentation on lymphedema. Many thanks to Nathalie Côté, nurse, Casley-Smith-certified lymphedema therapist, fitter and member of the MUHC Lymphedema Clinic team, whose exceptional expertise ensured clear answers to visitors’ precise questions at the LAQ booth. Alongside her, Ginette Bardou, Interim General Manager, was a highly effective networker. Hats off to Sylvain Leclerc, director on the LAQ Board, who opened doors for us.

Another success that enabled us to raise awareness of chronic swelling/lymphedema among front-line healthcare professionals.

BREAST HEALTH AND LYMPHEDEMA Proper breast examination is a good way of detecting breast cancer. The denser the breast, the more difficult it is to see a tumour. As a result, breast cancer is often diagnosed at a more advanced stage in people with dense breasts, leading to more aggressive treatments and, consequently, an increased risk of lymphedema following treatment.

In this program, women aged between 50 and 69 are invited to have a mammogram every two years to check for the presence of anomalies in their breasts.

You need a minimum of two daytime compression garments per year - ideally three. If you don’t have enough time to make sure your compression garment is washed and dry for the next day, you could buy two garments at almost the same time and alternate. Make sure the first garment fits properly before ordering the second. Each garment will last you 4 to 6 months.
