Welcome back to another academic year here at Cal State LA! I am extremely excited to work with everyone as your ASI President. ASI is eager to begin the year representing student interests to all our stakeholders on campus and in the community. This year, we will focus on three pillars. Our first pillar is LEAD. We want to hear from you so we can lead with a purpose. You deserve a student government that will proactively represent your concerns to the University. This brings us to our second pillar, ADVOCATE. We want to represent you in the best way possible, but just as importantly, we want to train and prepare you to effectively advocate on behalf of your own community. Finally, our last pillar is ENGAGE. In order to create real change, ASI will engage with the students of Cal State LA so we can work together as one. I commit to you that ASI will LEAD, ADVOCATE, and ENGAGE with the Cal State LA community to create a positive student experience, with the goal of dismantling all barriers that would impede your college success. ASI wants every student at Cal State LA to stay informed on the issues affecting students. We want to effectively communicate with you, and while we will introduce new avenues of communication methods, I strongly believe the most effective avenue is face-to-face interaction. Thanks to a portion of your student fees, ASI has a $1.4 million budget. Given that ASI is run by the students, those students are responsible for allocating resources to best serve the needs of all students. ASI is excited to support and bring you continuing and new events, programs and services, as specified in the pages that follow. All of our meetings are also listed in this booklet so you can hear from, and address us, in formal spaces. Additionally, we will be hosting Town Halls and Open Forums with different topics of discussion so that, as a campus community, we can listen to and address student concerns. We are here to serve all students, and I hope I have the opportunity to talk to you about how ASI can serve your needs to the fullest extent. ASI is excited to hear from you. Good luck this semester!
GOLDEN EAGLE PRIDE & SPIRIT
ASI supports campaigns directed by our Spirit Commissioner who organizes and maintains school spirit initiatives and programs. While developing and implementing a schedule of pride events throughout the academic year, the Spirit Commissioner is charged with initiating crowd participation for Cal State LA Athletics and encouraging club and Greek participation in largescale and campus walkway events. SCREAMING EAGLES STREET TEAM
The Screaming Eagles Volunteer Street Team gives Cal State LA students the opportunity to work towards increasing campus pride. The Screaming Eagles promote ASI events, solicit participation in programs, and assist in the planning of campus initiatives. Serving as a Screaming Eagle is a great experience, but participation also requires a commitment to attend regular meetings and to submit reports on a periodic basis. Under the leadership of the ASI Environmental Affairs Commissioner, the Environmental Policy Committee (EPC) formulates and encourages the adoption of policies that will make Cal State LA and the CSU System more environmentally sustainable. The Environmental Affairs Commissioner and EPC act as education agents with respect to environmental sustainability and environmental justice in our community. The Cal State LA Fine Arts Gallery was recently renamed as the Ronald H. Silverman Fine Arts Gallery. Professor Ron Silverman was a Cal State LA alumnus; upon graduation in 1955, he began teaching at Cal State LA and, after also serving as department chair, retired as Professor Emeritus of Art in 1988. Professor Silverman was an internationally respected teacher of art education and was among the earliest academicians in the U.S. to develop an official art education curriculum. The Department of Art also offers a scholarship named after Professor Silverman.

In partnership with EF Tours, ASI is excited to offer an amazing opportunity to participate in a 10 day excursion through Peru. Some of South America’s busiest cities and most stunning ancient ruins are yours to explore on this service adventure. High in the mountains you’ll discover what remains of Machu Picchu and Ollantaytambo, and unearth a treasure of preserved Colombian art in local artist Pablo Seminario’s ceramic workshop. Once you’ve become immersed in Peru’s unique cultural history, you’ll spend three days dedicated to meaningful service work in a local community outside of Cuzco. During this informational session, we will review the program learning objectives, application process, itinerary, and pricing. EPIC TOY AND FOOD DRIVE LOWER LEVEL OF THE CAREER CENTER
The EPIC Toy & Food Drive is a campus wide event that has taken place for the past 47 years. EPIC has coordinated this event centered on three main objectives, the first of which is to provide toys and food to low-income families during the holiday season. Second, is to give students, clubs, organizations, and all members of the campus community the opportunity to make a positive contribution in their community. The third objective is to place students in an environment that allows them to integrate classroom theory with real life experiences. These goals are achieved through a collaboration of students, staff, and faculty, who come together to collect toys and food.
