in Aspen and being a real estate professional in a variety of roles here. Why not tap into those resources and do 30 -minute open interviews with people?

I chose to host the conversations on Zoom so people can listen in in real time and participate. I want these calls to be open and available to the public.

So far, we’ve talked to a very well -known local appraiser Randy Gold, top real estate attorney Chris LaCroix, and an amazing real estate entrepreneur and current city council person, Bill Guth. I ask some questions that are intentionally targeted based on their profession and some that are more open. The hope is for whoever is listening in or participating in the conversation—whether it’s my two teenage sons, our agents, staff, clients or the general public—to learn a little bit about that person, what they do, what they enjoy about what they do, what the challenges are, and then also just some off-the-cuff stuff information that might be general life or business advice. So far, it’s been really fun, and I’ve got dozens more people, topics in line.

When you took on a leadership role with Aspen Snowmass Sotheby’s International Realty, one of your first initiatives was creating a formal Mission, Vision & Values statement. Why was this a priority for you?

I wanted to have what I felt was a foundation in place for all of our staff and agents to refer to, to understand, to think about, to hopefully believe in, and then to go forward and act upon. I also felt very strongly that for us to continue to be the most successful number one real estate firm in the Roaring Fork Valley, we really needed to have a culture that everybody could feel and grab on to. That culture built itself organically over the years in a really cool way. By codifying a mission, vision, and values statement, we give people the opportunity to identify with who we are as a company and discern how we are different from other real estate firms and companies in our area and beyond.

Tell me about the Aspen Real Estate Experience. What it is? How did it evolve?

I feel one of my duties in helping to lead our company, agents, and staff is to continuously be at the tip of the spear in terms of our quest for knowledge and professionalism, and our ability to serve our clients in the best possible way. I really try to take a holistic approach to that because it’s not all just nuts and bolts about knowing real estate, the blocking and When I asked myself, “What are things that will help our agents, staff, younger generations and even just the general public grow, be better, be interested, and be engaged?” The concept of The Aspen Real Estate Experience is very simple. I’ve actually done things like this in very different formats in different areas of my life previously for different purposes. I have a deep black book of contacts from my years of growing up

From the glamorous nostalgia of his Gray Malin in Aspen series to the playful warmth of Dogs of Aspen, Malin captures what makes this mountain enclave so enduringly magnetic: its ability to be both aspirational and deeply human.

Over the years, Malin’s creative connection to Aspen has evolved into a full-fledged love affair — spanning installations, collaborations, and his newest aerial photographs that reveal the town’s rare beauty from above. In this exclusive conversation, he reflects on Aspen’s unique brand of grounded luxury, the art of living beautifully, and the inspiration he continues to find in the mountains that feel like home.

Aspen has clearly become one of your great muses. What is it about Aspen’s landscape, culture, or energy that continues to inspire your creative vision year after year?

Aspen is incredibly unique in the value it brings to all who visit and reside in this special place. There is so much it offers, while it retains its charm as a small town.

That value (outdoor activities, fashion, music, art, restaurants, family experiences to name a few) is unmatched and keeps Aspen feeling aspirational yet relatable.

When I create artwork I want it to feel the same... relatable yet aspirational. I am inspired to continue to create work in such a valuable community.

Aspen Sotheby’s International Realty celebrates the art of living beautifully. How do you see your photography aligning with that idea — of turning life itself into a kind of art form?

I love that phrase, “the art of living beautifully.” I think it perfectly aligns with my vision and my work, in a way, celebrates that. A great house is a canvas, and the things you fill it with, including the art, are what turn it into a home. When

people see my photography, I hope it inspires them to find that beauty in their everyday lives. When you fill a home with wonderful things that bring you joy, combined with the backdrop of a gorgeous natural destination like Aspen that brings joy as well—that’s truly the art of living beautifully.

Your Gray Malin in Aspen series feels like stepping into a snow globe — equal parts fantasy and nostalgia. Can you share what first sparked that mid-century, vintage-ski aesthetic and how you brought it to life on the mountain?

I was originally inspired by my grandparents. They led a very glamorous life and left nearly 50 photo albums of their adventures. They traveled to 100 countries, and I love looking through those albums. There’s something about that time period—the ‘60s and ‘70s—that makes me tick, and I wanted to bring that aesthetic to Aspen. The shoot was no easy task, having to source so many vintage props and get them up the mountain via snowcat or gondola, but the effort was worth the reward. Shooting this series was all about creating images that celebrate local ski culture in a retro chic way, with a nod to Aspen’s alpine elegance.

From The Little Nell partnership to Snow Beach at the top of Ajax, your projects in Aspen have evolved in scale and concept. How do you decide when a creative idea is ready to move from imagination to execution?

I love pushing boundaries. Though I started as a photographer, my creative intention quickly expanded from taking the image to creating experiences based on my artwork for others to enjoy and capture their own pictures and memories.

There is a lot of power in giving others the tools to become the photographer themselves–and I love being the vehicle that inspires them.

The Dogs of Aspen series was a runaway success—pun intended. Why do you think people connected so deeply with that collection?

I wanted this series to be an expansion of my love letter to Aspen through a new subject matter, dogs, that brings joy to all. The idea for the series came to me

while I was playing with my kids at Wagner Park admiring the many incredible dog breeds running in the rugby field. I think people related to this series because pets are like family members and it was a unique combination capturing man’s best friend in a beloved destination with a snowy escape backdrop. I was so proud that through this series we were able to raise over $60,000 for the Aspen Animal Shelter.

You’ve captured Aspen from so many angles—on the slopes, at après, even from the sky in your newest aerial collection. What does photographing Aspen from above reveal that can’t be seen from the ground?

Seeing the four mountains from above was sensational, and they each felt unique in their terrain and landscape. The standout moment was flying over Aspen Highlands and seeing the hikers headed to ski the bowl. Flying above and seeing all the movement of the lifts and the skiers traversing down the slopes against the backdrop of Aspen’s otherworldly beauty is something that is hard to describe. Seeing it all at once is a unique vantage you won’t be able to quite get on the ground.

You’ve worked with some of the most iconic destinations in the world—from Bora Bora to the Amalfi Coast. In your eyes, what makes Aspen’s brand of luxury distinct?

Aspen’s luxury is distinct because it’s so grounded. It’s not just about a five-star hotel or an exclusive restaurant, it’s a luxury that’s earned. It’s in the physical challenge of earning your turns on the mountain, the deep sense of community you feel in town, and the simplicity of spending time with family. It’s an authentic luxury that’s rooted in experience and in the natural beauty of the place itself.

Finally, when you think about Aspen—its mountains, its community, its sense of magic—how would you describe what it feels like to you, beyond the image?

Aspen is a place that recharges my creative spirit and fills me with a sense of peace. From the locals you meet there is a sense of kindness and welcoming that envelops you. It’s a place where I’ve created so many memories with my family, like watching our kids learn to ski for the first time. It’s a feeling of pure, unadulterated bliss that I’m so lucky to get to experience. It’s that deep sense of contentment you feel when you’re in a place that just feels right and you breathe in, and truly exhale.

Aspen’s Hidden Landmark on the River Tucked along the banks of the Roaring Fork River, the historic log cabin at 117 Neale Avenue in Aspen is a living relic of Aspen’s past — a one-bedroom, one-bath home with as much life outside as within.

In the mid-1990s, the cabin was carefully reassembled “from a pile of boards,” its original logs preserved plank by plank. Today, it stands protected under the City of Aspen’s Historic Landmark designation — a rare piece of Aspen’s architectural soul.

“It’s such a peaceful, grounding place,” says Lex Tarumianz, listing agent and broker associate with Aspen Snowmass Sotheby’s International Realty. “The way the windows are positioned, you’re completely surrounded by nature. You look out and see the river flowing past. In winter, when the snow is falling and the light filters through the trees, it feels almost magical.”

n the United States, snow polo is played exclusively in Aspen, a winter haven perfectly suited to the sport, thanks to reliable snowfall, high-altitude light, a rich equestrian tradition, and a community that embraces athleticism as lifestyle. Each December, the St. Regis World Snow Polo Championship—now in its 14th year—transforms Rio Grande Park into a world-class arena, drawing patrons for both sport and spectacle.

“The atmosphere is electric: horses on snow, the mountains and ski slopes as a backdrop, and an audience that ranges from lifelong horse people to visitors seeing polo for the first time,” says Noël Hallisey, former professional Equastrain, longtime horse polo player with the Aspen Polo Club, and a pioneer of women’s polo in the Roaring Fork Valley. “It’s a unique combination.”

Known for its rare blend of horsemanship and pageantry, the St. Regis World Snow Polo Championship has become one of Aspen’s most coveted winter experiences—a glittering celebration where winter light, alpine vistas, and the grace of the horse take center stage. General admission is free, yet the VIP experience in the St. Regis hospitality tent is a masterclass in alpine luxury: front-row views, flowing bubbles, and the kind of curated winter spectacle only Aspen can deliver.

Chantal Henderson, a lifelong horsewoman and equestrian property specialist with Aspen Snowmass Sotheby’s International Realty calls the event “aspirational and symbolic.“ Polo’s influence here has been more cultural than commercial. It’s about the lifestyle, the fashion, the image of equestrian elegance. The snow polo championship amplifies that appeal—

it’s Ralph Lauren meets Rocky Mountain ranching. People want to live that story, or at least dress like they do.”

But the tournament’s allure extends beyond the fashion or clatter of mallets and thundering hooves. Polo has quietly reshaped Aspen’s cultural DNA, fostering a heightened appreciation for equestrian living.

“Aspen has always been a place where sophistication meets the rugged West,” says Hallisey, also an agent with Aspen Snowmass Sotheby’s International Realty. “Polo complements the western traditions, like rodeo and ranch life, and the St. Regis World Snow Polo Championship really elevated the equestrian scene and attracted folks who might not otherwise have been involved with horses or polo at all.”

Equestrian culture has long been a cornerstone of the Roaring Fork Valley’s identity, shaping both land and community. Horse polo bridges the local traditional western heritage with a larger, more international equestrian community. “Aspen has always been a place where sophistication meets the rugged West,” says Hallisey. “We have such a great blend of horse worlds here. It’s one of the things that makes Aspen and the Roaring Fork Valley so special. You might have a fifth-generation rancher and an international polo player riding side by side. There’s a shared respect for the horses and the land that connects everyone.”

The St. Regis World Snow Polo Championship is the only official snow polo tournament in North America. The sport of snow polo itself traces its origins to St. Moritz, Switzerland, where it began in 1985. “It’s fantastic to see Aspen named alongside St. Moritz, where they play on a frozen lake,” says Hallisey. “Aspen, already an international destination for skiing, suddenly added snow polo to its list of world-class winter experiences.”

Traditionally, winter isn’t a riding season in the mountains, but snow polo has shifted that mindset. “This event proves that it is possible to enjoy horses here in the winter with the right amenities, like heated barns and indoor arenas,” notes Hallisey. The horses are actually transported in just for the event. They’re trained in Florida and brought to Aspen with warm winter blankets and special snow shoes that give them traction to play safely on snow. It’s an incredible sight and a real feat of horsemanship and logistics.”

Horses polo’s influence naturally extends beyond Aspen to the rest of the Roaring Fork Valley, where some of the nation’s most impressive ranches and equestrian estates reflect a lifestyle rooted in heritage, elegance, and outdoor living. “Post-COVID, we’ve seen tremendous demand for ranch properties that offer the Colorado lifestyle—horses, open land, big views,” Henderson says. “Most buyers aren’t serious equestrian competitors; they’re lifestyle equestrians. They want that ranch aesthetic and experience, with horses as part of the picture.” While the valley may not rival Wellington, Florida, or Thermal, California, as a year-round equestrian hub, it draws buyers seeking something rare: space, serenity, and style.

“Equestrian properties are more desirable than ever,” Hallisey notes.
