SwampCon is a free, multi-genre convention hosted by University of Florida students and Student Activities and Involvement at the J. Wayne Reitz Student Union. For over ten years, members of the Gator Anime club have volunteered their time and talents to present this event, which celebrates Japanese arts and fashion, gaming, pop culture, cosplay, and performance arts across fandoms. SwampCon features a variety of dance shows, contests, theatre performances, panels, artists, vendors, and MORE that are all FREE in this jampacked weekend of fun!

We are a student and volunteer run convention. It is thanks to the amazing community that has supported us for 12 years that we are able to continuing hosting this event! It is an honor to have become a University of Florida Signature Event this year and a delight that we can continue to host this event and bring you even more fun for the years to come! Through all the hardships and complications of the last few years, an incredible community has been rallying behind us to keep us going.

Come discover the Naginata, a rare Japanese martial art! Resembling a curved polearm, this martial tradition has been around for 400 years. Learn a little about the history of Naginata, how it developed alongside the sword and other weapons, became the preferred weapon of historic women, and is now practiced diversely as a martial art and sport outside of Japan, worldwide, and across the US. Let’s take a look at parlor games that offered similar kinds of fun. In honor of SwampCon’s “Pantheon” theme, we’ll consider the roles assigned in classical mythology games from the late Renaissance. Then, in a few sentences each, we can demo games published throughout the 1800s that involved making up fairy tales as a group, role-playing as flowers and insects, and building up funny nonsense stories kind of like “Mad Libs” or Surrealist poetry. We can also talk about the penalty phase many games had and how people felt about it-including all the kissing. Where Do I Start?

Gator Comics is hosting a “Where to Start: Marvel, DC, and Independent Comics” panel, where the Gator Comics’ officers will be presenting on some of the best, must-read comics for inexperienced comic book readers or those who just want some new suggestions! The world of comics can be intimidating, but the purpose of this panel is to make the process of choosing a comic a little less scary. The officers will give some of our best recommendations and a short synopsis of each important event comic, as well as answer any questions that anyone has about how to read comics, what comics to buy, and how you can tell a good comic from a bad one!
