His Broadway revival of How I Learned to Drive opened in April. Regional credits include the Guthrie, Center Theatre Group, Steppenwolf, Seattle Rep, Hartford Stage, La Jolla Playhouse, Yale Rep, Berkeley Rep, Williamstown, Sundance Theatre Lab. His work has also been seen at London’s Donmar Warehouse and Menier Chocolate Factory, Dublin’s Gate Theatre, and the Sydney Opera House. Mark is a current SDC Executive Board member and President of the SDC Foundation.

KRIS DANFORD, she/her FIFTH SEASON (Dialect Coach) is delighted to be back at Asolo Rep as dialect coach, after having previously spent four seasons in the acting company.

Asolo Rep credits include The Last Five Years, Searching for Eden, The Winter’s Tale, The Imaginary Invalid, Smash, The Plexiglass Slipper, Pride and Prejudice, and Expecting Isabel. As a voice/dialect coach or actor, other credits include the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Jewel Theatre Company, American Stage, Oregon Cabaret Theatre, and Ashland New Plays Festival. Kris is currently Associate Professor of Voice and Speech at Penn State University. She has a BFA in Musical Theatre from SUNY Fredonia, MFA in Acting from FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training, and is an Associate Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework.

AMANDA J. DAVIS, she/her FIRST SEASON (Assistant Stage Manager) is making her Asolo Rep debut. Her previous regional credits include Earth to Kenzie, Rhoda and the Fossil Hunt, The Scorpions’ Sting (Lyric Opera of Chicago); Roz and Ray, A Wonder in My Soul, Where Did We Sit on the Bus? (Victory Gardens); Murder for Two, A Q Brothers’ Christmas Carol (Chicago Shakespeare); and The Humans (American Theater Company).

LEWIS FLINN, he/him FIRST SEASON (Music/Lyrics/Arrangements/ Orchestration) has written musicals for Broadway and off-Broadway and scored over 50 plays on Broadway, off-Broadway, and at regional theatres across the country. He’s scored films and national commercials and written songs for many recording artists. His favorite, and frequent, collaborator is husband Douglas Carter Beane. When not composing, he loves being a father to their teenage children, Cooper and Gaby.

(NBC/Universal), Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson (Broadway, The Public, Williamstown), Cyrano de Bergerac (Broadway), Here Lies Love (The Public), The Robber Bridegroom (Roundabout), Sailor Man (co-creator; NY Fringe; winner Best Play) and Robin Hood (Williamstown).

Some of his work with the Old Globe includes Romeo and Juliet, The Last Goodbye, Othello, Ken Ludwig’s Robin Hood!, and Hamlet. He’s also designed fights for Disney Cruise Line, Ogunquit Playhouse, Prospect Theater Company, Connecticut Free Shakespeare, and the Robin Hood Foundation. JEFFREY GUGLIOTTI, he/him FIRST SEASON (Associate Choreographer) is a choreographer and teacher based in New York City.

He received his dance degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst while also performing and teaching throughout New England with Quicksilver Dance, Vacanti Ballet, and Urbanity Dance. Jeffrey is currently the Co-Artistic Director of ELSCO Dance, a NYC-based contemporary fusion dance company. His choreography has been performed along the East Coast at StylePointe NYC, the Boston Contemporary Dance Festival, and the University of South Carolina. His work was also featured on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and The View. Jeffrey is most recently the associate choreographer for the off-Broadway revival of Little Shop of Horrors, Mr. Saturday Night at Barrington Stage, and the Broadway revival of Funny Girl. g n i t a e Cr An Interview with Playwright Douglas Carter Beane and Director Mark Brokaw Your most celebrated works include straight plays and musicals. What’s unique about each of these forms to you and how do you approach each of them differently as a playwright and director respectively?

Douglas Carter Beane: Plays almost always have to come from me. Musicals come from an outside source. But even that has to be personal. I have to feel I have something to say, something that no one else would. With Xanadu, it was “why do a film onstage in the first place, and what do the muses of theater really think of it?”

With Cinderella, I had the original French version to draw on, which was the power of kindness in the face of ridicule. With Sister Act, it was my own experience growing up in Philadelphia in the late 70s.

And I knew it was about race.

Beyond that, I do have an off-kilter sensibility going on here, and I have to make sure it jibes with the story being told.

When Lewis [Flinn, composer and lyricist] and I started work on Hood as a musical at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, I was intrigued by the story of Robin Hood. By the notion that, as Lewis says in his lyric, “There’s a hero in your heart.” I ‘got’ Hood when I read the original ballads from the 16th century and found a unique humor and quirkiness in them. I found the characters to be peculiar and eccentric. I found that Robin was a noble man who was thrust into the world of economic redistribution. I found that Marian was a better archer than Robin.

I found the story of Much very touching, although in the original, Much’s weapon was a great sack of flour he would throw in people’s faces. Off-the-wall enough for me, yes, but the poor stage crew that would have to clean that up!

Mark Brokaw: I approach a straight play in the same way I approach a musical. A musical is just a play, only more so… it’s just a larger animal. If a play is creating a new world, a musical is really creating a new universe. A musical has many more moving parts, and to me, that’s the fun of it. It requires a larger toolbox.

It’s fun to take so many disparate pieces and make them all fit together into one machine that has one thing on its mind.

Mark, you’ve said that Hood is less an adaptation and more referencing a legend, of which there are many versions. Tell me what that distinction means to you.

MB: An adaptation would be taking up a piece of pre-existing material and adapting it into something else, some other form.

In this case, there’s no original pre-existing text. There are many, many versions, which Doug knows better than me, but there’s not one particular telling that he selected as the version of the story to transform into a musical. I think Doug used all of those different versions of the Robin Hood legends to form his own version of it. In a way, those legends are all backgrounds to the legend that he created, which is its own, original thing.

Douglas, why Hood? Why that legend specifically?

DCB: It was a character that I loved from my childhood. They were stories I read to my children, and they loved them and were fascinated by them. They were written not by one person, but by many people over hundreds of years, so things don’t necessarily align correctly historically; people were saying, “let’s add this” and “let’s add that.”

How has America’s civil unrest and the conversation about structural antiracism over the last few years influenced the development and evolution of this new iteration of the Robin Hood legend?

The Crusades are in there and that’s an interesting thing to play with because they were viewed as a heroic thing during the period and now they’re viewed with great shame and embarrassment. Richard, the Lionheart, seems to have been viewed as a hero in a lot of these versions…and now he just comes across as sort of a closet Queen jerk.

What are some traits that each of you look for in a collaborator, whether it’s a playwright or a composer or director? What makes a collaboration click for you, and what are elements that can make a collaboration challenging?

MB: The thing I love about the rehearsal process is that it changes so much day to day, and a play or a musical becomes what it is because so many different collaborators have their fingers in the pot. The director is always the nexus of all of that information, but a piece finds itself through the design process and the rehearsal process and the preview process.

I think the best collaborations work because people listen to

each other and trust each other; they’re open to everything. I try to surround myself with the smartest people I can find.

DCB: Each project is different.

As a book writer, your job is much more about structure, organization, and giving everything a perspective that hopefully everyone aligns with as the project develops. Eventually, they start to take over a little bit and you have to surrender anything you’ve ever written. When I worked on Cinderella, the composer and the lyricist were deceased, but they had left behind little bits here and there from other shows that I could creatively weave. With Hood, Lewis is living, so we get to throw things back and forth.

I like the collaboration when a discussion happens. Sometimes a scene needs to be a song. If you have a warm place in your heart for music, and you have to be a book writer, you willingly surrender your ego to it. If music excites you and delights you, you sort of go, “Oh, well. Let’s do this.” I’ll tell a story but I really like it when people sing and dance.

MB: We want to get people while they are laughing. We haven’t done any rewriting in the sense of, “how do we write about what happened in the last three years?” It’s been more about how we unleash what is already inside this story in a way that speaks to what is going on today all around us.

DCB: At its heart, this play is about otherness. It’s about standing up for those who can’t. These threads have all been woven in the piece from the beginning, but they’ve all taken on a different heat. The way that I have always looked at this piece is that it’s through the eyes of this company that’s putting on this story. Whenever we had a question, I would always ask, “What would these people do? What would their choice be? How would this group cast this? How would this group design this? What kind of choreographer would they hire for this?”

Even back in 2017, it was very intentionally cast in a way this story wouldn’t typically be; there was a real attempt to de-center what is usually thought of as being a very white story. And we did that even before this contemporary moment and the 2020 call for social justice. asolorep.org
