OUR MISSION
Engage and inspire audiences with extraordinary theatrical experiences created with vision, passion and artistry and enhanced by deeply integrated education and community engagement programs.
COMMITMENT TO ANTI-RACISM, INCLUSION, DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND ACCESS Asolo Rep is committed to becoming a more inclusive, diverse, and antiracist institution at all levels. In order to intentionally address injustice and racism we believe theatre must become a leading force in telling the stories of our time to inform and influence a better future. We will reflect upon our past, investigate our current course of action, and develop a responsive and sustainable plan to break down barriers to access and challenge racism and bias within our institution and our community. Our commitment to Anti-Racism and Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) requires that we continue to actively listen, seek learning opportunities, create space for direct and open discourse and strive to meet people where they are—taking time to effect lasting change together. For more information on Asolo Rep’s IDEA commitment, visit asolorep.org/idea.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Asolo Rep acknowledges that we join together in the practice of theatre on the native lands of The Calusa People. As a step toward honoring the truth and achieving healing and reconciliation with those Indigenous peoples, we honor with gratitude the land itself and the Calusa Tribe. This acknowledgement does not take the place of authentic relationships with indigenous communities but serves as a first step in honoring the legacy of the land.

HISTORY THE MUMPS
OF
Etiology of mumps is discovered Various studies into the disease had been carried out across the 19th and 20th centuries, but the viral etiology of mumps was finally documented by Claud D. Johnson and Ernest W. Goodpasture.
1971
1967
1948
1945
First written description of mumps The first written description of mumps was in the Corpus Hippocraticum. The passage reads: “Swellings appeared about the ears, in many on either side, and in the greatest number on both sides. They were of a lax, large, diffused character, without inflammation or pain, and they went away without any critical sign.” 1934
5th century BC
VACCINE
The FDA approves a mumps vaccine! The FDA licensed Mumpsvax, a vaccine developed by Maurice Hilleman that was created from the mumps virus infecting his five-year-old daughter, Jeryl Lynn Hilleman. The Mumpsvax vaccine was recommended for routine use in the US in 1977.
An inactivated vaccine has been developed This version of the mumps vaccine only had short-term effectiveness, with subsequent preparations utilizing a live virus that has been weakened, rather than an inactivated variety.
The mumps virus is first isolated Development of the MMR vaccine The MMR immunization vaccine mixed the live attenuated viruses of measles, mumps, and rubella. Hilleman had also created the measles vaccine in 1963 and an improved version in 1968. The MMR vaccine was licensed in 1971, and a second dose was introduced in 1989. 1 0 EUREKA DAY
The MMR vaccine autism controversy Andrew Wakefield, at the time a British medical researcher, authored a research paper published in The Lancet medical journal claiming that there was a link between the MMR vaccine and the development of autism, as well as bowel problems. Wakefield’s study was merely a case report rather than detailed research and only involved 12 children – an incredibly small sample size. The study is now deemed incorrect and fraudulent, but at the time was widely reported on by the media, leading to a sharp drop in vaccination rates in the UK and Ireland, and catalyzing the anti-vaccination movement.
US court refutes claims of autism The US Court of Federal Claims ruled that no evidence had been found to support a link between autism spectrum disorders and vaccines, dismissing suits filed by more than 5,300 parents who claimed the MMR vaccine had caused autism in their children.
2016
2009
1998
2010
2022
Wakefield’s autism research is dismissed as “dishonest” Several researchers were unable to reproduce Wakefield’s results, following Sunday Times reporter Brian Deer’s discovery in 2004 that there had been manipulation of the study’s data and financial conflicts of interest.
The mumps today In the United States, cases of mumps have dropped by 99% since the introduction of a vaccine in 1967. Unlike measles and rubella, however, mumps has not yet been eliminated in the United States. Recent large outbreaks have occurred among college students (2006; more than 6,500 cases) and in a traditionobservant Jewish community, sparked by a boy who returned from a trip to the United Kingdom and began showing mumps symptoms while at a summer camp (2009-2010; more than 3,400 cases).
The US mumps resurgence There were several outbreaks of mumps in the US among populations that were already highly vaccinated against the disease, including at Harvard University, where more than 40 people contracted the virus. The researchers found that immunity derived from the vaccine lasts an average of 27 years after the final dose is administered, meaning that in addition to the two doses administered to individuals during childhood, a potential third dose at age 18 may be required to maintain immunity into late adulthood. asolorep.org
