lack History Month is celebrated in the United States in the month of February and is recognized in the UK, Netherlands, and Ireland in the month of October. It’s purpose is to honor and recognize the achievements and contributions of Black people and African Americans throughout history.

A NOTE FROM PEOPLE & CULTURE

ASM Global is an international company, and we are proud of our efforts to be inclusive. We do our best to ensure that our team members feel included in our cultural observances. Even though it may not be a holiday or cultural observance that is celebrated in your country, we should challenge each other to learn about other cultures, experiences, and perspectives that may be different than our own. It’s hard to say we care about our team members if we don’t take the time to understand and appreciate what makes each of us unique.

Black History Month has always been an event of significance to me.

It gives me an opportunity to explore and learn more about a culture of which I’m a member of and identify with. Unfortunately, most of us didn’t learn much about Black History in school, so we’ve had to get our information elsewhere. I take pride in reflecting on the diversity that Black culture brings and for the contributions of those before me.

This year, our Diversity and Inclusion committee provided some recommendations for books, films, and podcasts that are relevant to Black History. We hope you will read or watch a few of them.

We look forward to introducing our ASM Global Talks series. It is a safe space for team members to talk and share personal experiences and perspectives on a variety of topics to include diversity and inclusion, current events, and professional development. Last year we had a PRIDE panel discussion, and for Black History Month we are hosting a conversation with a group of ASM Global team members in the spirit of Black History Month.

READ BORN A CRIME: STORIES FROM A SOUTH AFRICAN CHILDHOOD by: Trevor Noah The memoir of one man’s coming-of-age, set during the twilight of apartheid and the tumultuous days of freedom that followed.

Trevor Noah’s unlikely path from apartheid South Africa to the desk of The Daily Show began with a criminal act: his birth. Trevor was born to a white Swiss father and a black Xhosa mother at a time when such a union was punishable by five years in prison. Living proof of his parents’ indiscretion, Trevor was kept mostly indoors for the earliest years of his life, bound by the extreme and often absurd measures his mother took to hide him from a government that could, at any moment, steal him away. Finally liberated by the end of South Africa’s tyrannical white rule, Trevor and his mother set forth on a grand adventure, living openly and freely and embracing the opportunities won by a centuries-long struggle.

BROWN GIRL DREAMING by: Jacqueline Woodson Jacqueline Woodson, one of today’s finest writers, tells the moving story of her childhood in mesmerizing verse.

Raised in South Carolina and New York, Woodson always felt halfway home in each place. In vivid poems, she shares what it was like to grow up as an African American in the 1960s and 1970s, living with the remnants of Jim Crow and her growing awareness of the Civil Rights movement. Touching and powerful, each poem is both accessible and emotionally charged, each line a glimpse into a child’s soul as she searches for her place in the world. Woodson’s eloquent poetry also reflects the joy of finding her voice through writing stories, despite the fact that she struggled with reading as a child. Her love of stories inspired her and stayed with her, creating the first sparks of the gifted writer she was to become.

I, TOO, SING AMERICA: THREE CENTURIES OF AFRICAN AMERICAN POETRY by: Catherine Clinton From the first known African American poet, Lucy Terry, to recent poet laureate Rita Dove, I, TOO, SING AMERICA captures the enormous talent and passion of black writers. This powerful and diverse, this unique collection spans three centuries of poetry in America as poets bare their souls, speak their minds, trace their roots, and proclaim their dreams in the thirty-six poems compiled here. The voices of Langston Hughes, Countee Cullen, W. E. B. Dubois, and Gwendolyn Brooks, among others, create an energetic blend of tone and tempo, ardor and awe. From lamentations to celebrations, these poems reveal the ironies of black America, juxtaposing themes of resistance and reconciliation, hope and despair. Each poem is further illuminated with notes, a brief biography of the poet, and stunning visual interpretations. Clinton and Alcorn have created a stirring tribute to these great poets, as well as a remarkable volume that will move any reader.

JUST MERCY: A STORY OF JUSTICE AND REDEMPTION by: Bryan Stevenson An unforgettable true story about the potential for mercy to redeem us, and a clarion call to end mass incarceration in America — from one of the most inspiring lawyers of our time.

Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a nonprofit law office in Montgomery, Alabama, dedicated to defending the poor, the incarcerated, and the wrongly condemned.

Just Mercy tells the story of EJI, from the early days with a small staff facing the nation’s highest death sentencing and execution rates, through a successful campaign to challenge the cruel practice of sentencing children to die in prison, to revolutionary projects designed to confront Americans with our history of racial injustice.

One of EJI’s first clients was Walter McMillian, a young Black man who was sentenced to die for the murder of a young white woman that he didn’t commit. The case exemplifies how the death penalty in America is a direct descendant of lynching — a system that treats the rich and guilty better than the poor and innocent.

THE THING AROUND YOUR NECK by: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Searing and profound, suffused with beauty, sorrow, and longing, the stories in The Thing Around Your Neck map, with Adichie’s signature emotional wisdom, the collision of two cultures and the deeply human struggle to reconcile them.

In “A Private Experience,” a medical student hides from a violent riot with a poor Muslim woman whose dignity and faith force her to confront the realities and fears she’s been pushing away. In “Tomorrow is Too Far,” a woman unlocks the devastating secret that surrounds her brother’s death.

The young mother at the center of “Imitation” finds her comfortable life in Philadelphia threatened when she learns that her husband has moved his mistress into their Lagos home. And the title story depicts the choking loneliness of a Nigerian girl who moves to an America that turns out to be nothing like the country she expected; though falling in love brings her desires nearly within reach, a death in her homeland forces her to reexamine them.

Searing and profound, suffused with beauty, sorrow, and longing, these stories map, with Adichie’s signature emotional wisdom, the collision of two cultures and the deeply human struggle to reconcile them. The Thing Around Your Neck is a resounding confirmation of the prodigious literary powers of one of our most essential writers.

BLACK HISTORY IS AMERICAN HISTORY Okalani Dawkins is a passionate Sophomore excited to create a better world through her passion for Civil Rights. In this talk, she highlights the importance of African American societies in America's history past the Civil Rights Movement, and why we need to pay more attention to matters like those as well.

UNCOMFORTABLE CONVERSATIONS WITH A BLACK MAN Emmanuel Acho sits down to have an “uncomfortable conversation” with white America, in order to educate and inform on racism, system racism, social injustice, rioting & the hurt African Americans are feeling today.

CELEBRATION OF NATURAL HAIR Cheyenne Cochrane explores the role that hair texture has played in the history of being black in America -- from the heat straightening products of the post-Civil War era to the thousands of women today who have decided to stop chasing a conventional beauty standard and start embracing their natural hair. “This is about more than a hairstyle,” Cochrane says. “It’s about being brave enough not to fold under the pressure of others’ expectations.”

THE CHAOTIC BRILLIANCE OF ARTIST JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT Learn about the life of American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, from his start as part of graffiti duo SAMO to his rise as an internationally renowned painter.
