S t r a n d e d is a commercial and retail building situated adjacent to the Welwyn Garden City railway: site in which a wheat factory stood. As the name of the project emanates, the project focuses on the individuality of the community, mainly during a pandemic, where people must deal with being imprisoned at home. The idea is to create a building that would “move” so that people would be able to see their loved ones without exiting their dwellings, by so following the rules of the governments of keeping distance. The blue oak can be controversial, yet it is what makes my building stand out, which then contrast with the bronze colour of the portico. Because of its deep colour, at night lights will at the commercial level will enlighten to keep the building visible to citizens. All the flats receive daylight and enough sunlight depending on their location. Sustainability was a big part of the project, as using the building breaks the Welwyn Garden City idea, as it centralises all the key functional components of a city in one building. The idea originated from Soleri, which was looking for a solution for the urban sprawl, health crisis and housing demand in America (which are almost all the same as the current housing issue we have in the UK). That perhaps if used in the UK could result to have positive impacts just the way it did in America.

FIRE AND SAFETY To keep the building as fire resistant as possible, the use of Cavity barriers and fire stops where used to fire-proof it, with the addition of a DPC to keep the moisture away from them. EXTERNAL CLADDING To keep the external cladding fire-proofed, the materials would have to be fully fill the space the gap in between , with the need of DPC and a thermoblock sheet. In addition those methods were also used in the building: Butt tight joints - no gaps DPC layer to external cavity faces Cavity tray at horizontal members needed plus weep holes Min. size to be cavity width (less tolerance) and 38mm deep Filler to cladding tolerance gaps to be mortar or mineral wool INTERNAL CLADDING Battens would have to be filled with no gaps. Mineral wool was a choice for its Fire proof properties. In addition those methods were also used in the building: Tolerance gaps filler to considered and checked Butt tight joints - no gaps1 Minimum size to be cavity width (less tolerance) and 38mm deep

Cross Laminated Timber would resolt in less carbon footprint from the building. Timber us one of the few materials to have net carbon 0 as it works like a tree: releasing oxygen and storing CO2 duirng the day. A timber structure mixed with concrete foundation and walls to create a solid heavy weight for the building to stand was a key part to stabilize it considering its cantiliver shape. The building regenerated the Area, flourishing new working opportunities for the residents and citizens, while also creating a safe environment for the community to enjoy teh time together.

The human being is a mysterious animal. The need to give meaning to everything in life is a natural response, almost a self-mechanism that protect us and give us purpose. Imagine a place where time you can spend the time understanding your own psychological and physical potential and capabilities. A place where you are encouraged to discover yourself. The centre in Barnet (owned by the Template Foundation) is a place where those studies are conducted and supported to deepen the life of many people. While visiting, the main issues discusses were the lack of sound and nature inside the building. In this refurbishment project I have considered those issues that bought me to the concept idea of a waterfall. Indeed, water creates a natural sound element that is very calming, while also being a key element of nature. The transparency and the ability of water to take any shape or form can be compared to that of the soul. Indeed, one of the spaces for the brief is a healing/meditation place, where I believe the placement of a waterfall is very critical to achieve the perfect environment and create the perfect emotion: a small and tight corridor that suddenly expands to a big semi-oval hall with a waterfall in the middle. Water becomes part of people’s spiritual journey, extinguish the fire that is present within them. It is all about the individual journey, while they all contribute to the environment differently. Whether you’re there only for the café or to attend a big event, you will be overwhelmed with the surrealistic feeling of water, from the colour of the floor to the wavy shape, everything inside was made to be as organic and natural as possible. The placements of windows around the waterfall and the use of natural lighting was used as a way to lead people and keep everything a mistery.

Transformation The room will have oak blue painted walls and the waterfall will have a glass core and orenge/yellow timber studs that make the design of the room. The flooring will be light blue epoxy resin. To reach the Carbon net 0 i tried using natural material both on the inside and outside of the building and increased the external walls by 800mm.I used an oak painted cladding for the outside. The healing room has also oak internal partition. The U-Value i was able to achieve was 0.101 (K/m2-K) which follows the building requirements. The waterfall has various holes that allow water to spill outside the big tubes. During the day the water will create a barrier for external air to penetrate the building, yet at night a mechanical system could be used to keep the cold air outside. I have positioned 15 LG solar panels and photovoltaic evacuated tubes at the top of the roof, as it is the only way to ensure the crating of gas and electricty all year round. Each panel will have a power of 360 W, creating 43kWh yearly, saving 34.5t of CO2. This will be able to also imput energy into the natural grid as well.

The Cinema, Hatfield:

24
My objective through this project was to attract people by blending with the surrounding history and nature. I wanted to create something that was very visible from the station but also to anyone walking around. Salisbury Square used to be an important meeting point for the community, yet nowadays it is completely dead. Few retail shops are trying to re-attract people from the area, but it is still not enough. I choose to create a tunnel, while also changing the material of the current stairs to aluminium. The tunnel that is located between the 2 building has a view from the top of Hatfield and its surrounding, which emphasis on the hidden beauty of this city. Then I choose to do a cinema, as Hatfield house is well known place for filming. In this cinema, movies will be projected. Yet it is not the only projection the building has. Through a spiral staircase, the threshold tunnel and the building are connected. In this way, projections can also be done from the threshold to the square, which will create big gatherings in the square. A lot of my ideas of the cinema are inspired the history and relationship that Hatfield has had with the aerospace and aviation industry, which led me to Stanley Kubrick(which lived nearby) movie: a Space Odyssey.

By removing some of the brciks on the lift wall, it allows light to penetrate the building. In this way, there is more natural lighting in the inside, becoming more energy effcient.. The use of glass ceiling and glass doors was chosen as i wanted to make something that did not require a lot of led light, while the natural Ennvironmetn gives it for free. The uk is not extremely sunny, yet the dailight is still present and is better, as sunlight once it hits the double glass pariitions, will heat up the inside. This is mostrly dangerous in the summer, yet a coolimg system is used to help make the inside confortable for the visitor.

Located Above the fabrick ceiling in the space between 2 overlapping fabrick. It allowes the air to stay renewed inside the room. A ventilation system keeps the air cool. The mototr places outside and away from the Cinema so it does not create any further noise pollution to the room.

REFLECTION Concept Idea: Reflection
On this project I focused on bringing the whole city together by reflecting it. Indeed when you reflect something, the mirror makes it seems near yet it is far. This was my thought process for the building, bringing everything together(the old and the new). In this way the building acts as a `abstract` bridge. Mirrors are positioned inside and outside the exterior walls. In addition a tree will be planted in the middle of the building. I wanted to preserve the nature, while also creating this reflection from the inside out. The gallery at the top is the main focus and has a glass ceiling so that it is always illuminated. Outdoor space is also very critical, so that chairs, tables,etc.. Can be positioned outside to allow external gatherings. 36
