column Dag op dag één jaar geleden kenden we de lancering van de eerste editie van Blue Sky Magazine. We zijn dan ook vervuld met trots en blijdschap dat we u de tweede editie van ons in-flight magazine kunnen presenteren. Na de vele mooie commentaren op de eerste uitgave was het voor ons een evidentie om hier een vervolg aan te breien. Parallel met het magazine werd vorig jaar ook Air Charters Europe boven de doopvont gehouden. Met ACE bieden we oplossingen aan voor groepsreizen en incentives met een capaciteit vanaf 30 passagiers. Alle verwachtingen werden tot nog toe ver overtroffen in die mate dat we in juni reeds een tweede toestel – een Embraer ERJ 145 – met 42 stoelen introduceren.

Ook nu valt op dat het nieuwe magazine gepaard gaat met de opstart van enkele belangrijke nieuwe projecten. Eén van de blikvangers is zonder twijfel de uitbouw van een volledig nieuwe ‘General Aviation Terminal’ voor zakelijke luchtvaart op de luchthaven van Luik. Met deze belangrijke investering is het ook een beetje een ‘retour à Liège’, maar daarover meer in één van de boeiende artikels verderop dit magazine. Daarin ook meer duiding rond de nieuwe specialisatie in afhandelingsdiensten of FBO-services op 4 luchthavens in België en Nederland en dit zowel voor onze eigen vluchten als voor derden. Hierdoor mogen we opnieuw 20 mederwerkers verwelkomen in de ASL familie. Tot die familie rekenen we ook de verschillende partners en adverteerders, het is mede dankzij hen dat we deze exclusieve uitgave kunnen realiseren.

Ik kijk dan ook met veel vertrouwen en gezonde ambitie uit naar onze avonturen in 2019!

Exactly one year ago the first edition of Blue Sky Magazine was launched. We are proud and happy to present you the second edition of our in-flight magazine. After much positive feedback on the first edition, it was obvious for us that there would be a follow-up. Last year, Air Charters Europe was launched in parallel with the magazine. ACE offers solutions for group travel and incentives with a capacity starting from 30 passengers. So far, all expectations have been exceeded to such an extent that in June we already introduced a second aircraft - an Embraer ERJ 145 - with 42 seats.

Once again, it is remarkable that the launch of the brand new magazine is accompanied by the start-up of a few important new projects. One of the eye-catchers is without a doubt the development of a completely new ‘General Aviation Terminal’ for business aviation at Liège Airport. This important investment is also a bit of a ‘return to Liège’, but more about this in one of the fascinating articles later on in this magazine. It also provides more information regarding the new specialisation in handling services or FBO services at 4 airports in Belgium and the Netherlands, both for our own flights and for third parties. As a result, we are once again able to welcome 20 employees into the ASL family. The various partners and advertisers also belong to this family, and it is partly thanks to them that we are able to produce this exclusive publication.

In ons vorige Blue Sky Magazine lieten we daarom onze CEO Philippe Bodson aan het woord over de mijlpalen in de geschiedenis van ASL. Ook het voorbije jaar konden we

heel wat strategische uitbreidingen en samenwerkingen toevoegen aan ons geschiedenisboek. Maxime Wauters, Marketing Communications Manager en zelf ook piloot, en COO Ronald Sikora zijn de geknipte personen om hier alles over te vertellen.

Vorig jaar, ter gelegenheid van de twintigste verjaardag van ASL-JetNetherlands, werd er een gloednieuwe luchtvaartmaatschappij gelanceerd: ACE. Hoe staat het daar vandaag mee?

Ronald: “ACE, wat staat voor ‘Air Charters Europe’, is een uniek concept in de Benelux. We richten ons op een nichemarkt voor business incentives en groepsreizen van 10 tot 42 personen. Wij bieden deze mensen een aangename, luxueuze vlucht met alles erop en eraan zodat ze kunnen reizen als echte VIP’s. Het is een veel groter succes geworden dan we hadden verwacht. De klanten zijn vaak bedrijven, maar ook voetbalploegen, golfclubs, muziekgroepen (bv. de Britse synthpopband Years & Years), automerken en defensie. Veel evenementenbedrijven, bijvoorbeeld Zoute Events, zijn fan van ACE. De Embraer ERJ-135, het toestel voor dertig personen, dat speciaal werd gemaakt voor deze business line, wordt vanaf volgend jaar ook ingeschakeld voor de skireizen van onze travel agency ASL Travel. Door het grote succes van ACE nemen we binnenkort een tweede vliegtuig in gebruik, met plaats voor 42 passagiers. Het is onze ambitie om op die manier gestaag onze luchtvaartmaatschappij uit te bouwen. We hebben het voorbije jaar alleszins gemerkt dat er heel wat potentieel zit in het concept.”

Last year, on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of ASL-JetNetherlands, a brand new airline was launched: ACE. How are things today?

Ronald: “ACE, which stands for ‘Air Charters Europe’, is a unique concept in the Benelux. We focus on a niche market for business incentives and group travel from 10 to 42 people. We offer these people a pleasant, luxurious flight with all the trimmings so they can travel like real VIPs. It has become a much greater success than we had expected. The customers are often companies, but also football teams, golf clubs, music groups (e.g. the British synth pop band Years & Years), car brands and defence. Many event companies, such as Zoute Events, are fans of ACE. The Embraer ERJ-135, the aircraft for thirty people, which was specially made for this business line, will also be used for the ski trips of our travel agency ASL Travel, starting next year. Due to the great success of ACE, we will soon be putting a second aircraft into service, with room for 42 passengers. It is our ambition to steadily expand our airline this way. Over the past year, we have certainly noticed that this concept has a great deal of potential.”

Last year there was talk of a possible location in Liège. Has that plan already become concrete?

Maxime: “Very concrete, because we are currently working on the concrete construction plans for a General Aviation Terminal and for a first hangar at Liège airport. The brand new terminal, which we will be completely operated by us, will be operational by the spring of 2020. As a future Station Manager, I am closely involved in this project. I find it a fascinating challenge to ensure that our new location is set up and equipped with the utmost professionalism. There will be a luxurious lounge with all the trimmings to receive passengers and pilots in complete comfort.”

Why did you want a branch in Liège so badly?

Ronald: “Liege has a lot of assets. First of all, it is a very accessible city: from wherever you come, you can get there without spending hours stuck in traffic. In addition, the business terminal is separate from the airport, which means you can even drive your car up to the plane. This saves you a lot of time. Moreover, the airport is open 24/7, which is very interesting for intercontinental flights or the organ transplant flights that we often do. In short, flying from Liège is highly efficient and that is why we are so proud of our new terminal.”

Vorig jaar was er sprake van een mogelijke vestiging in Luik. Is dat plan intussen al concreet geworden?

Maxime: “Zeer concreet, want we zijn momenteel bezig met de concrete bouwplannen van een General Aviation Terminal en van een eerste hangar in de luchthaven van Luik. In het voorjaar van 2020 zal de gloednieuwe terminal, waarvan we de volledige exploitatie voor onze rekening nemen, operationeel zijn. Als toekomstige Station Manager ben ik nauw betrokken bij dit project. Ik vind het een boeiende uitdaging om ervoor te zorgen dat onze nieuwe vestiging uiterst professioneel wordt opgezet en ingericht. Er zal een luxueuze lounge zijn met alles erop en eraan zodat de passagiers en de piloten in alle comfort kunnen ontvangen worden.”

Waarom wilden jullie zo graag een vestiging in Luik?

Ronald: “Luik heeft ontzettend veel troeven. Ten eerste is het een zeer bereikbare stad: van waar je ook komt, je geraakt er zonder uren in de file te staan. Daarnaast staat de business terminal los van de luchthaven, waardoor je zelfs tot aan het vliegtuig kan rijden met je auto. Zo bespaar je veel tijd. Bovendien is de luchthaven 24/7 geopend, wat heel interessant is voor intercontinentale vluchten of de orgaantransplantvluchten die wij vaak doen. Kortom, vliegen vanuit Luik is zeer efficiënt en daarom zijn we zo fier op onze nieuwe terminal.”

Maxime: “Ook niet onbelangrijk: de brandstofprijzen in Luik zijn goedkoper dan in andere luchthavens. We merken echt dat de luchthaven fors aan het groeien is de laatste jaren – webshopgigant Alibaba is nu bijvoorbeeld ook gevestigd op de luchthaven van Luik – dus we willen mee surfen op die golf. ASL-JetNetherlands zal de eerste business aviation aanbieder zijn in deze regio. We zijn ervan overtuigd dat we er veel nieuwe klanten zullen aanspreken met onze exclusieve dienstverlening.”

Ronald: “Wist je trouwens dat ‘ASL’ staat voor ‘Air Service Liège’, destijds een klein bedrijfje met één toestel dat onze CEO Philippe Bodson in 1997 overnam en waarmee het verhaal van ASL-JetNetherlands begon? Met de nieuwe vestiging in Luik keren we in feite dus een beetje terug naar onze roots. Toch een mooie symboliek, nietwaar?” (lacht)

Maxime: “What is also important: fuel prices in Liège are cheaper than in other airports. We really notice that the airport has been growing considerably in recent years - webshop giant Alibaba is now also based at the airport of Liège - so we want to ride that wave too. ASL-JetNetherlands will be the first business aviation provider in this region. We are convinced that we will appeal to many new customers with our exclusive services.”

Ronald: “By the way, did you know that ASL stands for ‘Air Service Liège’, at the time a small company with only one aircraft that our CEO Philippe Bodson took over in 1997 and which was the start of the story of ASL-JetNetherlands? With the new location in Liège, we are in fact returning a little to our roots. How’s that for symbolism?” (laughs)

Are there any further expansions planned for the activities of ASL-JetNetherlands?

Ronald: “We have recently set up our own handling company. This way, we are responsible for handling incoming and outgoing aircraft in Antwerp, Groningen, Maastricht (from 1 June 2019) and Liège (from 2020). In concrete terms, this means that we ensure that aircraft can park, allow passengers to board and disembark, refuel, etc. We welcome the passengers and the pilots and bring them to their hotel or arrange a taxi. In the past, we only did the handling for our own aircraft, but we have now extended this service to other airlines as well.”

Maxime: “A major expansion is also planned at our Antwerp site very soon. We are starting with the construction of a second warehouse on the other side of our current location. We absolutely need that extra space to continue supporting our further growth. Something to look forward to.”

How do you see the future of the private aviation sector?

Ronald: “Actually, I only expect more growth. We see more and more regular customers returning on a regular basis for the excellent service and first-class flying experience of ASL-JetNetherlands. The many check-in delays caused by increasing security measures, strikes, etc. at the major airports also cause a number of people to choose to fly privately. Our Blue Sky Aviation club, a loyalty programme for frequent flyers, has certainly also led to an increase in direct, returning customers.”

Maxime: “People who have the means for it feel more attracted to private aviation because it is fast and comfortable.

With the ‘regular’ airlines, they are often on the road for a long time, which is very tiring and far from efficient. Moreover, traveling by plane is not necessarily bad for the environment. With ASL-JetNetherlands, we make a lot of efforts to work ecologically. New planes are now made a lot more ecological than they used to be. We are also investigating the option to fly on bio-fuel. And because we fly more direct routes and fly higher than scheduled flights, we have a smaller ecological footprint. Plus: we land at many small airports that are not served by scheduled flights. From La Mole in Saint-Tropez, for example, passengers get to their final destination in no time, instead of being stuck in traffic for hours. The same goes for Courchevel: get off the plane, take a half an hour’s drive and you find yourself on the ski slope. No more sitting in the bus or taxi for hours.”

Maxime, you are a pilot yourself. What do you like about flying a private plane?

Maxime: “I have been fascinated by aviation since childhood - my grandfather was a pilot and my mom was a stewardess - and I have always had the idea of ​​becoming a private jet pilot. I don’t work according to a standard timetable and I have no fixed routes. That would really not work for me, while other pilots like such a clear structure. They are perfectly suitable for regular airlines. It is good that they are there, because there is much less demand for pilots for private flights. (laughs) As a pilot, I like having a lot of contact with the customers. I am an ambassador for ASL-JetNetherlands, a role that I gladly take on. That is totally different from scheduled flights where, as a passenger, you hardly ever see the pilot.”

Zijn er verder nog uitbreidingen gepland bij ASL-JetNetherlands?

Ronald: “We hebben onlangs ons eigen afhandelingsbedrijf opgericht. We staan hiermee in voor de afhandeling van inkomende en uitgaande vliegtuigen in Antwerpen, Groningen, Maastricht (vanaf 1 juni 2019) en Luik (vanaf 2020). Concreet betekent dit dat we ervoor zorgen dat vliegtuigen kunnen parkeren, passagiers kunnen in- en uitstappen, tanken,…

We verwelkomen de passagiers en de piloten en brengen hen naar hun hotel of regelen een taxi. Vroeger deden we de afhandeling enkel voor onze eigen toestellen, maar we hebben deze service nu ook opengetrokken naar andere vliegtuigmaatschappijen.”

Which aircraft do you prefer to fly?

Maxime: “The Embraer Legacy 450. We were the first commercial operator of this aircraft worldwide, something we are proud of. It is also the largest aircraft that we ever flew to Saint-Tropez (La Mole). As a pilot you can fly commercially with a maximum of two different aircraft. You usually have to follow a specific training for each aircraft. Not to be underestimated, but all the more challenging!”

Ronald: “We would like to expand our fleet steadily, with a number of aircraft per year. This will enable us to continue to grow as a company. Let us state clearly that it is not our ambition to become the greatest of all. We mainly want to expand strategically, as we have done in recent years. We want to improve our services by moving closer to our customers at different locations, to allow them to fly even more enjoyably. After all, that’s what we do it for: we want to offer them an exceptional experience, a real adventure.”

Maxime: “Ook in onze vestiging in Antwerpen staat heel binnenkort een grote uitbreiding gepland. We starten namelijk met de bouw van een tweede loods aan de overkant van onze huidige vestiging. Die extra ruimte hebben we absoluut nodig om onze verdere groei te blijven ondersteunen. Iets om naar uit te kijken, dus.”

Hoe zien jullie de toekomst van de private aviation sector?

Ronald: “Ik verwacht eigenlijk alleen maar meer groei. Meer en meer zien we vaste klanten die op regelmatige basis terugkeren voor de uitmuntende service en de eersteklas-vliegervaring van ASL-JetNetherlands. Ook de vele vertragingen bij het inchecken door toenemende veiligheidsmaatregelen, stakingen etc. op de grote luchthavens zorgen ervoor dat een aantal mensen ervoor kiezen om privé te vliegen. Onze Blue Sky Aviation club, een getrouwheidsprogramma voor frequent flyers, heeft zeker ook voor een toename van directe, terugkerende klanten gezorgd.”

Maxime: “Mensen die er de middelen voor hebben, voelen zich meer aangesproken tot private aviation omdat het snel gaat en comfortabel is. Met de ‘gewone’ airlines zijn ze vaak lang onderweg, wat toch wel erg vermoeiend is en verre van efficiënt. Reizen met het vliegtuig is trouwens niet per definitie slecht voor het milieu. Wij doen met ASL-JetNetherlands veel inspanningen om ecologisch te werk te gaan. Nieuwe vliegtuigen worden vandaag de dag sowieso een pak ecologischer gemaakt dan vroeger. We zijn ook de piste aan het onderzoeken om op bio-fuel te vliegen. En doordat we meer rechtstreekse routes vliegen en hoger vliegen dan lijnvluchten, hebben we een kleinere ecologische voetafdruk. Plus: wij landen op veel kleine luchthavens die niet bediend worden door lijnvluchten. Vanop La Mole in Saint-Tropez bijvoorbeeld staan de passagiers daardoor in een mum van tijd op hun eindbestemming in plaats van uren in de file te staan. Hetzelfde geldt voor Courchevel: vliegtuig af, een half uurtje rijden en je staat bijna meteen op de skipiste. Je moet dus geen uren in de bus of de taxi zitten.”

Maxime, jij bent zelf ook piloot. Wat vind je zo leuk aan vliegen met een privévliegtuig?

Maxime: “Ik ben van kindsbeen af gefascineerd door luchtvaart – mijn grootvader was piloot en mijn mama stewardess en ik heb altijd al het idee gehad om private jet piloot te worden. Ik werk niet volgens een standaard uurrooster en heb geen vaste routes. Ik zou dat niet kunnen, terwijl andere piloten juist graag zo’n duidelijke structuur hebben. Die zijn perfect geschikt voor de reguliere vliegmaatschappijen. Het is goed dat zij er zijn, want er is veel minder vraag naar piloten voor privévluchten. (lacht) Ik vind het leuk dat ik als piloot veel contact heb met de klanten. Ik ben een ambassadeur van ASL-JetNetherlands, een rol die ik met plezier op mij neem. Dat is totaal anders dan op lijnvluchten. Daar zie je als passagier de piloot bijna nooit.”

Met welk toestel vlieg je het liefst?

Maxime: “Met de Embraer Legacy 450. Wij waren de eerste commerciële operator van dit toestel wereldwijd, iets waar we toch wel trots op zijn. Het is ook het grootste toestel waarmee we ooit naar Saint-Tropez (La Mole) vlogen. Als piloot mag je maximaal met twee verschillende toestellen commercieel vliegen. Doorgaans moet je voor elk vliegtuig een specifieke opleiding volgen. Niet te onderschatten, maar des te uitdagender!”

Ronald: “We willen onze vloot graag gestaag uitbreiden, met een aantal toestellen per jaar. Dit zal ons in staat stellen om te blijven groeien als bedrijf. Laat ons wel duidelijk stellen dat het niet onze ambitie is om de allergrootste te worden. We willen vooral strategisch uitbreiden, zoals we de laatste jaren hebben gedaan. We willen onze dienstverlening verbeteren door ons dichter bij onze klanten te vestigen op verschillende locaties, zodat ze nog aangenamer kunnen vliegen. Daar doen we het tenslotte voor: we willen hen een exceptionele ervaring bieden, een echte beleving.”

How did la Maison Delvaux originate?

“In 1875, Belgium had the longest railway network in the world. Charles Delvaux, a maker of travel bags from Brussels, soon realized the consequences of this revolution. He started to adapt his business to women’s new need to keep certain things close to hand while traveling. This led to the company filing the first patent for handbags in 1908. In 1933 it was taken over by Franz Schwennicke, who developed Delvaux into an exclusive brand by responding to the increasing demand for luxury handbags. He was also the first producer of luxury leather goods who introduced seasonal collections, an haute couture concept. Under his leadership, the Delvaux House made countless masterpieces that won great acclaim worldwide. Just think of ‘Le Brillant’, a bag specially designed for the 1958 World Expo in Brussels.”

What are important sources of inspiration for Delvaux’s creations?

“Surrealism is a great source of inspiration, partly due to the fantastic imagination of great Belgian artists such as René Magritte and Paul Delvaux. Each bag reflects Delvaux’s values and ​​ commitment to the highest quality standards, combined with the touch of irony that is an integral part of Belgian art and literature. The atmosphere of Belgian surrealism is present in all of Delvaux’s creations and gives them a humorous touch, with each design characterized by an unconventional view of luxury.”

How do you see the future of the fashion house?

“In 2011, Delvaux became part of First Heritage Brands, which also includes brands such as Sonia Rykiel and Robert Clergerie. The group is led by Jean-Marc Loubier, CEO and President of the House. La Maison Delvaux continues to grow.

The opening of ‘Le 27’ last year was an important milestone in our history. Early 2019, our first American flagship store opened its doors on Fifth Avenue, in the elegant Upper East Side of Manhattan. This too is a unique gem, in which the old elements and contemporary aesthetics merge into a pure feeling of ‘Belgitude’.

Delvaux is also an official Supplier to the Belgian Court. Quite a token of recognition, isn’t it?

“Since the early years, Delvaux has enjoyed the prestige and trust of connoisseurs, especially the Belgian Royal family.

The fashion house received the title ‘Official Supplier to the Belgian Court’ in 1883 from King Leopold II. The title, chosen and awarded by the king every five years, is a tribute to the high quality of the products and was continuously granted to Delvaux. We are an authentic Belgian brand and we are extremely proud of that.”

Bjorn Mollet has been working for ASL Group for 11 years, of which 5 years for Blue Sky Aviation, the frequent flyer programme of ASL-JetNetherlands. His ambition for this year is to increase the amount of members to 100. A magic number, ambitious, but we’re on our way.

How does the Blue Sky loyalty program work exactly?

“Our club members purchase a Frequent Flyer package from us, which gives them a number of flight hours, ranging from 15 to 50. These can be used all year round on all ASL-JetNetherlands aircraft. That large fleet of 30 aircraft is certainly one of our great assets. Our customers can count on competitive prices - the more hours they fly, the less it costs them per hour - and they receive absolute preferential treatment. We always look for the best device for their chosen destination and the type of trip that they make. This is often an aircraft that is not accessible to the general public, which makes it all the more unique.”

“Because our customers are ‘frequent flyers’, we know them well and have built up a genuine relationship of trust. This is essential to guarantee the excellent service that Blue Sky Aviation stands for.”

Do you fly worldwide?

“Yes, we fly to all the destinations in the world. We can depart and land wherever and whenever the customer wants it. ‘We fly. You are the captain’ is the slogan of ASL-JetNetherlands for a good reason! We often fly to destinations such as SaintTropez, Gstaad or Courchevel. The airport there is very technical and weather-sensitive, but with our Pilatus we can land there without any problems on condition that the weather is nice. In a few minutes’ time, the people are at their hotel and on the ski slope, which is fantastic. Otherwise, they often spend an hour and a half on the way from the airport to the ski resort. We usually use our own aircraft, but sometimes we also work together with local companies. Recently, for example, there was a company that went whale watching in a remote area of Canada. ​​ We then worked with a local airline – of course one that we carefully selected. This way, we made sure that these people could travel in all luxury up to their final destination, without a lot of extra transport and tiring hassle. The same for a small group of friends who travelled to Curaçao. With Blue Sky they were able to travel in a quiet and pleasant way to their destination, without having to change planes and long waiting times.”

Vliegen jullie wereldwijd?

“Jazeker, we doen alle bestemmingen ter wereld aan. We kunnen vertrekken en landen waar en wanneer de klant het wil.

‘We fly. You are the captain’ is niet voor niks de slogan van ASL-JetNetherlands! We vliegen vaak op bestemmingen als Saint-Tropez, Gstaad of Courchevel. De luchthaven daar is heel technisch en weergevoelig, maar met onze Pilatus kunnen we er zonder problemen landen op voorwaarde dat het mooi weer is. De mensen staan dan op een paar minuten in hun hotel en op de skipiste, wat fantastisch is. Anders zijn ze vaak anderhalf uur onderweg van de luchthaven naar het skigebied. Meestal schakelen we onze eigen toestellen in, maar soms werken we ook samen met maatschappijen ter plaatse.

Onlangs was er bijvoorbeeld een bedrijf dat walvissen ging spotten in een afgelegen gebied in Canada. Toen werkten we samen met een lokale vliegmaatschappij – uiteraard zorgvuldig geselecteerd. Zo zorgden we ervoor dat deze mensen in alle luxe konden reizen tot op hun eindbestemming, zonder veel extra transport en vermoeiende rompslomp. Idem voor een kleine groep vrienden die naar Curaçao reisden. Met Blue Sky konden ze een rustig en aangenaam traject afleggen tot op hun bestemming, zonder overstappen en lange wachttijden.”

Stel, ik wil een superyacht en ik kom hiervoor aankloppen bij SeaNet. Hoe gaat het dan concreet in zijn werk?

“We kijken eerst en vooral naar de wensen van de eigenaar-koper en zijn familie. Hoeveel personen zullen er op het yacht verblijven, wat is de gewenste vaarregio - Middellandse Zee, Caribisch gebied of Azië - en welke activiteiten zullen er aan boord plaatsvinden? De belangrijkste vraag is hoeveel tijd ze willen doorbrengen aan boord van hun luxeyacht, en op welke manier. Op basis van al deze voorkeuren krijgt de koper van ons een volledig op maat gemaakt voorstel. In de meeste gevallen sluit onze populaire co-ownership formule perfect aan bij zijn behoeftes. Hierbij worden de eigenaar-koper en zijn familie op jaarbasis in het hoogseizoen drie keer twee weken verwelkomd aan boord. De kosten worden dan gedeeld onder maximaal drie co-eigenaars per yacht, per seizoen. De investerings- en onderhoudskosten staan dus volledig in verhouding tot het gebruik. Wij nemen ook het complete yacht management voor onze rekening. Als co-eigenaar heb je dus de garantie dat je zes weken per jaar in het hoogseizoen zorgeloos kan genieten aan boord. Suppose I want a superyacht and I decide to call in SeaNet’s help for this. How do we proceed?

“We look first and foremost at the wishes of the owner-buyer and his family. How many people will stay on the yacht, what is the desired sailing region (Mediterranean Sea or Caribbean/Asia) and what activities will take place on board? The most important question is how much time they want to spend on board their luxury yacht, and how. Based on all these preferences, the buyer receives a fully customized proposal from us. In most cases, our popular co-ownership formula is perfectly aligned with their needs. In this formula, the owner-buyer and his family are welcomed on board three times a year for a two-week period during the high season. The costs are then shared among a maximum of three co-owners per yacht/per season. The investment and maintenance costs are therefore fully proportional to the use. We also take care of the complete yacht management. As a co-owner you have the guarantee that you can indulge yourself in six weeks of carefree enjoyment on board per year during the high season. On the other hand, there are also people who want to be the full owners of a yacht. We guide them intensively through the entire purchase process, from the design and layout to delivery and complete yacht management afterwards. This is a very exciting process that takes one to three years to complete and in which we are constantly looking for a balance between design and functionality. The result is a superyacht that is completely made to measure for the buyer. Really a dream come true!”

“A lot needs to be arranged on a yacht, leaving very little room for the owner to unwind. SeaNet ensures that the yacht is fully serviced and prepared for winter while the owner is ashore. We guarantee that the necessary insurance, technical and safety services, accounting and ownership structures are and remain fully in order, so all that the owner has to do is enjoying his time on board. We are also responsible for the careful selection of an experienced crew. We go further than the standard in this respect. By means of a bimonthly rotation of the crew, we also guarantee them a perfect balance between work and private life, which reduces crew rotation to a minimum. After all, there is nothing more annoying than having to find new staff every year. Het begon allemaal in de jaren ’70, met de passie voor het verzamelen en delen van kunst van wijlen Marc Deweer.

“Sinds de oprichting van de galerie door mijn vader in 1979 zijn we uitgegroeid tot een echt begrip in de kunstwereld. Het DNA – hiermee bedoel ik de ‘Dagelijkse Natuurlijke Attitude’ – van Deweer Gallery bestaat uit het vroeg

opsporen, ondersteunen en grootbrengen van kunstenaars. We bouwen langetermijnrelaties met hen op, denk maar aan Stephan Balkenhol, Jan Fabre, Günther Förg, Ilya Kabakov en Panamarenko. In onze galerie gaat het om meer dan ‘zaken doen’ alleen. Dat maakt ons zo uniek,” vertelt directeur en eigenaar Gerald Deweer.

Deweer Gallery bestaat 40 jaar. Wordt er dit jaar iets speciaals gedaan om dat te vieren?

“Uiteraard zijn er gedurende het hele jaar interessante en verrassende solotentoonstellingen, zoals altijd. Onder de titel ‘Bye bye and hello’ blikken we dit keer in het bijzonder terug op de voorbije vier decennia, die zeer succesvol waren voor onze galerie. In het najaar van 2019, van 25 september tot 15 december, komt er een heuse overzichtstentoonstelling ‘40Y Deweer’ met een feestelijke vernissage op 22 september. Wat we precies gaan doen die dag, verklap ik nog niet. Maar het zal iets heel speciaals zijn, dat beloof ik. Zeker die dag al aankruisen in jullie agenda dus!”

Wie zijn Gerald en Bart Deweer?

Gerald en Bart Deweer groeiden op tussen de kunst. Hun vader Mark richtte Deweer Gallery op in 1979. Samen namen de broers geleidelijk de leiding van de galerie over. Gerald en Bart willen met Deweer Gallery een dynamische en toonaangevende rol spelen in de internationale hedendaagse kunstscene. Hun ambitieuze missie is het promoten van kunstenaars aan de hand van sterke interne en externe tentoonstellingen en deelnames aan internationale kunstbeurzen.

Who are Gerald and Bart Deweer?

Gerald and Bart Deweer grew up among art. Their father Mark founded Deweer Gallery in 1979. Together, the brothers gradually took over the management of the gallery. With Deweer Gallery, Gerald and Bart want to play a dynamic and leading role in the international contemporary art scene. Their ambitious mission is to promote artists through strong internal and external exhibitions and participation in international art fairs.

“During the retrospective exhibition ‘40Y Deweer ‘, we will be putting our international collection of 1,700 works of art, which we are very proud of, in the spotlight.”

Deweer Gallery has existed 40 years. Will you be doing something special this year to celebrate that?

“Of course, there are interesting and surprising solo exhibitions throughout the year, as always. Under the title ‘Bye bye and hello’, we will be looking back in particular on the past four decades, which have been very successful for our gallery.

In the fall of 2019, from 25 September to 15 December, there will be a real retrospective exhibition ‘40Y Deweer’ with a festive opening on 22 September. What we are going to do exactly that day, I cannot tell you yet. But it will be very special, I promise. Be sure to mark that day on your calendar!”

That retrospective exhibition is something to look forward to. After all, you can draw on an impressive international collection of 1,700 artworks ...

“Indeed, there are very few galleries that have such a large stock, both of great and well-known artists and of emerging artistic talents. It goes without saying that we are extremely proud of that. We have very big names such as Balkenhol, Fabre, Förg, Kabakov and Panamarenko. However, we also support and promote young, talented artists, such as Melissa Gordon, George Little, Enrique Marty and Nasan Tur. Without exaggeration, I can say that Deweer Gallery was and still is a pioneer in discovering artistic talent. My father, my brother Bart and I introduced promising artists such as Georg Baselitz, David Hockney, Allen Jones, Anselm Kiefer, A.R. Penck and Thomas Ruff to the general public. We were the first Belgian gallery to introduce the German post-war art movement ‘Neue Wilde’ and the ‘Transavanguardia’, the Italian neo-expressionism from the late 1970s and early 1980s. We absolutely place our bets on innovation and it is our ambition to let all ‘our’ painters grow into artists with a strong, individual position in the art world.”

The competition comes from all sides in the contemporary art market. There are more and more fairs, more artists, more collectors. How do you deal with that?

“In a top-10 of the Belgian art galleries recently compiled by newspaper De Tijd, we rank seven. That is a particularly strong position, isn’t it? We have no real explanation for this long-term success. Despite our ‘remote’ location, we are able to attract the right customers. We have 1,600 m² of exhibition space, where we can organise three exhibitions at once. That is a major asset, together with the fact that we as gallery owners have personal contact with our customers. Buying art is something very personal for a collector. They buy what they like, what appeals to them, what they want to pass on to their children later on.

The status that comes with it or the speculative aspect interests them much less. We try to guide our customers as well as possible as individual art advisors. An approach that has clearly been bearing fruit for forty years!”

“Er zijn inderdaad maar weinig galeries die over zo’n omvangrijke stock beschikken, zowel van grote en bekende kunstenaars als van opkomende artistieke talenten. Het spreekt voor zich dat we daar bijzonder trots op zijn. Er zitten heel grote namen tussen zoals Balkenhol, Fabre, Förg, Kabakov en Panamarenko. Maar we ondersteunen en promoten evenzeer jonge getalenteerde kunstenaars, bijvoorbeeld Melissa Gordon, George Little, Enrique Marty en Nasan Tur. Zonder overdrijven kan ik zeggen dat Deweer Gallery een pionier was en nog steeds is in het ontdekken van artistiek talent. Mijn vader, mijn broer Bart en ikzelf lieten het grote publiek kennismaken met veelbelovende artiesten als Georg Baselitz, David Hockney, Allen Jones, Anselm Kiefer, A.R. Penck en Thomas Ruff. De concurrentie komt van alle kanten op de hedendaagse kunstmarkt. Er zijn steeds meer beurzen, meer kunstenaars, meer verzamelaars. Hoe gaan jullie daarmee om?

“In een top-10 van de Belgische kunstgaleries die De Tijd onlangs opstelde, staan wij op zeven. Dat is toch een bijzonder sterke positie. Een echte verklaring voor dit langetermijnsucces hebben we niet. Ondanks onze ‘afgelegen’ ligging weten we de juiste klanten aan te trekken. We beschikken over 1.600 m² tentoonstellingsruimte, waar we drie expo’s per keer kunnen organiseren. Dat is een grote troef, samen met het feit dat wij als galerist persoonlijk contact hebben met onze klanten. Voor een verzamelaar is kunst kopen iets heel persoonlijks. Ze kopen wat ze graag zien, wat hen aanspreekt, wat ze later aan hun kinderen willen doorgeven. De status die ermee gepaard gaat of het speculatieve aspect interesseert hen veel minder. Wij proberen om onze klanten zo goed mogelijk te begeleiden als een individuele kunstadviseur. Een aanpak die duidelijk vruchten afwerpt, al veertig jaar lang!”

Zaventem - Monday 5/11/2018 - 8.00 pm - The Day Before…

Toen ik samen met een goede vriend - net als ondergetekende een jonge ondernemer en Clubfan van het eerste uur - van ASL Travel de kans kreeg om deze wedstrijd bij te wonen, moest ik geen twee keer nadenken. Om de vroege vlucht niet te missen, besloten we onze ‘bro trip’ reeds op maandagavond aan te vatten. Een gezellige studio op wandelafstand van het centrum van Zaventem en op nauwelijks 3 kilometer van de luchthaven leek ons een veilige belegging. Zoals zo vaak wanneer we elkaar ontmoeten zat de sfeer er meteen in. Het heerlijke Italiaanse restaurant L’Ascoli aan de overkant bleek een onverwachte voltreffer en de wijn, sambuca en limoncello deden de rest. Hoewel we op dat moment nog bevreesd waren voor de tegenstand groeide ons vertrouwen met de minuut.

Zaventem - Monday 5/11/2018 - 8.00 pm - The Day Before…

When I, together with a good friend – who is a young entrepreneur and Club fan from the very beginning, just like yours truly – was given the chance by ASL Travel to attend this match, I didn’t have to think twice. In order not to miss the early flight, we decided to start our bro trip on Monday evening. A cosy studio within walking distance of the centre of Zaventem and barely 3 kilometres from the airport, seemed a safe investment to us. As so often when we meet, the good vibes were there from the get-go. The delicious Italian restaurant L’Ascoli across the street turned out to be an unexpected hit and the wine, sambuca and limoncello did the rest. Although we were still afraid of the opposition at that time, our confidence grew by the minute.

You all know it, that ‘just the boys’ feeling. Sorry, ladies ... The atmosphere on the flight was very similar to that in a football stadium, which made our confidence about a successful outcome taking on more and more impressive proportions. Your sincerely then thought of a – not too be taken seriously - 0-4…

Aéroport Nice Côte D’Azur - Tuesday 6/11/2018 - 11.15 am - Arrival Around a quarter past eleven we set foot on French soil. Unfortunately, the ominous weather reports turned out to be right for us. From the sunny Brussels to the rainy Nice, our courage went down for a moment. Luckily, we were well prepared and the bus was waiting for us in time to let us go paint the town of Vieux Nice red.

Irish Pub Nice - Tuesday 6/11/2018 - 13.00 pm - Party Part I The hearty meal proved to be an ideal foundation for a blissful afternoon. One of the many Irish pubs was taken over by the Club supporters and in between the anthems we got together with fans from all over the country, from Scherpenheuvel to Sijsele, ‘United we stand’, you know. In the meantime, we kept on screaming our 0-4 forecast in laughter...

Monaco - Tuesday 6/11/2018 - 18.55 pm Stade Louis II - Party Part II At 4.30 pm the three buses left for Stade Louis II which looked a bit strange architecture-wise. After the obligatory checks, both at the border and in the stadium, we were ready for the Champions League anthem. Our fellow supporter from Sijsele decided to quickly bet 10 euros on the 0-4 that I kept repeating as a mantra. When, after barely 24 minutes, it was already 0-3 with two goals by Hans Vanaken and one by Wesley Moraes, we pinched each other for a moment. Were we really experiencing this live? After 13 years without winning the champion ball, we were on our way to the ‘Miracle of Monaco’. We were in control during the whole game and the atmosphere in the stadium was a bit like an open-air party. When captain Ruud Vormer poked the 0-4 against the nets 5 minutes before closing, the party broke completely loose. Our friend from Sijsele turned out to be winning 500 euros and promised us a well-deserved bottle of champagne on our return.

Brussels Airport - Wednesday 7/11/2018 - 1.20 am - Back Home The atmosphere on the trip back was one full of disbelief. Everyone needed some time to process what they had just experienced. Luckily Kiara was still there to bring everyone back to earth and to get on the plane in time. When saying goodbye, plans were made for the next European trip and Kiara had to solemnly promise that she would be there again.

Thanks to her good care, we were able to experience a fantastic ‘bro trip’ without a care in the world!

Op de gedetailleerde briefing die we van ASL Travel mochten ontvangen, lazen we af ‘Afspraak om 7u45 in Brussels Airport, rij 12’. We werden er hartelijk ontvangen door Kiara en Tom, de twee begeleiders die ons de ganse dag zouden gidsen.

De sfeer op de vlucht had veel weg van die in een voetbalstadion, waardoor ons vertrouwen over een goede afloop steeds indrukwekkender proporties begon aan te meten.

Aéroport Nice Côte D’Azur - Tuesday 6/11/2018 - 11.15 am - Arrival Omstreeks kwart over elf zetten we voet aan Franse bodem. De onheilspellende weerberichten bleken voor ons helaas te kloppen. Van het zonninge Brussel naar het doorregende Nice deed de moed even in de schoenen zakken. Gelukkig waren we goed voorbereid en stond de bus ons netjes op tijd op te wachten om ons los te laten in Vieux Nice.

Vieux Nice - Tuesday 6/11/2018 - 12.00 pm - Lunch Als echte mannen besloten we te starten met een stevige halve liter, vergezeld van een verse beefburger. Het verwarmde en overdekte terras liet ons toch toe om buiten te zitten. Onder het motto: positivo’s for ever!

Eén van de vele Irish pubs werd door de Club supporters ingepalmd en tussen de gezangen door verbroederden we met fans uit alle windstreken, van Scherpenheuvel tot Sijsele, ‘United we stand’, weet je wel. Ondertussen bleven we half lachend 0-4 uitschreeuwen als pronostiek…

Monaco - Tuesday 6/11/2018 - 18.55 pm Stade Louis II - Party Part II Om 16u30 vertrokken de drie bussen richting het architecturaal ietwat vreemd aandoende Stade Louis II. Na de obligate controles, zowel aan de grens als in het stadion, waren we klaar voor de Champions League hymne. Onze collega supporter uit Sijsele besloot om nog snel even 10 euro in te zetten op die 0-4 die ik als een mantra bleef herhalen. Toen het na nauwelijks 24 minuten reeds 0-3 stond met twee goals van Hans Vanaken en één van Wesley Moraes knepen we elkaar even in de wangen. Maakten we dit echt live mee? Na 13 jaar zonder zege op het kampioenenbal waren we op weg naar het ‘Mirakel van Monaco’. De ganse wedstrijd bleven we controleren en had de sfeer in het stadion iets weg van een ‘open-air-party’. Toen kapitein Ruud Vormer 5 minuten voor afluiten de 0-4 tegen de netten prikte, was het hek helemaal van de dam. Onze kompaan uit Sijsele bleek er 500 euro mee op te strijken en beloofde ons bij terugkomst een welverdiende fles champagne.

Brussels Airport - Wednesday 7/11/2018 - 1.20 am - Back Home De sfeer op de reis terug was er één vol ongeloof. Iedereen moest even verwerken wat ze net hadden meegemaakt. Gelukkig was er nog steeds Kiara om iedereen met de beide voetjes op de grond te houden en zo tijdig mee het vliegtuig op te krijgen. Bij het afscheid werden plannen gemaakt voor een volgende Europese verplaatsing en moest Kiara plechtig beloven dat ze er weer bij zou zijn. Dankzij haar goede zorgen, konden we volledig ontzorgd een fantastische ‘bro trip’ beleven!

reizen. “Onze klanten bestaan voor 85% uit zakenmensen. In 2018 landden hier 9282 toestellen, waarvan een 3000tal helikopters. We hebben niet de faciliteiten, noch de ambitie om groter te worden. Wij kunnen aan mensen die

regelmatig vliegen een uitmuntende en gepersonaliseerde service bieden, die ze in grotere luchthavens niet aantreffen,” vertelt Audrey Seybald. Zij is commercieel en logistiek manager van La Mole, zoals de luchthaven vaak genoemd wordt.

cial and logistics manager of La Mole, as the airport is often called.

“Zeker en vast. Het is de enige ‘kleine’ luchthaven in Frankrijk die officieel erkend is als ‘internationaal’. We hebben een zeer korte landingsbaan van amper 1200 meter, wat maakt dat piloten een officiële kwalificatie nodig hebben om hier te mogen landen. Met uitzondering van twee dagelijkse vluchten van en naar Genève van de Zwitserse maatschappij Air Glaciers (van Pasen tot de zeilregatta ‘Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez’ eind september, nvdr), vliegen er geen lijnvluchten op onze luchthaven. Onze klanten zijn grotendeels zakenmensen afkomstig uit Frankrijk, Zwitserland, Duitsland, Italië en België. In veel gevallen zijn zij de enige passagier in het vliegtuig, sommigen zijn zelf ook piloot. De andere 15% komen op vakantie, vaak naar hun eigen buitenverblijf in de Var. Dit is een prachtige en gevarieerde regio, het is veel meer dan enkel SaintTropez. Elke passagier besteedt gemiddeld 1.720 euro per dag. Onze luchthaven speelt dus een zeer belangrijke rol in de economische ontwikkeling van de Golf van Saint-Tropez.”

The least you can say about this airport is that it is very special in many ways.

“Definitely. It is the only ‘small’ airport in France that is officially recognized as international. We have a very short runway of barely 1200 meters, which means that pilots need an official qualification to land here. With the exception of two daily flights to and from Geneva by the Swiss airline Air Glaciers (from Easter to the sailing regatta ‘Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez’ at the end of September, ed.), there are no scheduled flights at our airport. Our customers are mainly business people from France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy and Belgium. In many cases they are the only passengers on the plane, some of them are pilots themselves. The other 15% go on vacation, often to their own country home in the Var. This is a beautiful and varied region, it is much more than just Saint-Tropez. Each passenger spends an average of 1720 euros per day. Our airport therefore plays a very important role in the economic development of the Gulf of Saint-Tropez.”

Dit valt inderdaad niet te vergelijken met de vele koele, haast ‘steriele’ luchthavens zoals de meesten gewend zijn. Onze klanten, waaronder veel zakenmensen en bedrijfsleiders, houden van de manier waarop moderne technologie hier samengaat met de traditionele Var-sfeer. De omgeving is rustig en groen, en dat wordt ook enorm geapprecieerd. In tegenstelling tot wat sommige mensen denken, verwelkomen wij hier niet de typische ‘jetset’. Die vliegen doorgaans op de luchthaven van Cannes, onze ‘grote zus’ (die tot dezelfde groep behoort, nvdr).”

Denken jullie soms aan uitbreiding van de luchthaven?

“Neen, dat is niet ons doel. Ten eerste hebben we gewoon de ruimte niet. Onze luchthaven is omringd door bergen en gelegen naast een rivier en een drukke autoweg. Hierdoor is het onmogelijk om de landingsbaan groter te maken. Daarnaast is er ook overeengekomen met de omwonenden dat er maximaal 10000 landingen mogen zijn per jaar. Dat cijfer hebben we bijna bereikt. Los daarvan hebben we ook niet de ambitie om groter te worden. Het is prima zoals het nu is.

Doordat we zo klein zijn, kennen we de meeste klanten heel goed. Ze weten dat ze bij ons terecht kunnen voor efficiënte service, kwaliteit en discretie. We hebben een klein team van 19 medewerkers (25 in het hoogseizoen) die zich met hart en ziel inzetten om elke passagier een warm welkom te heten in de Golf van Saint-Tropez.”

“The airport is built in neo-Provencal style, with many traditional elements. A conscious choice! Indeed, this cannot be compared to the many cool, almost ‘sterile’ airports as most are used to. Our customers, many of whom are business people and managers, love the way in which modern technology is combined with the traditional Var atmosphere. The area is quiet and green, and that is also greatly appreciated. Contrary to what some people think, we do not welcome the typical ‘jet set’ here. They usually fly to the airport of Cannes, our ‘big sister’ (who belongs to the same group, ed.).”

Do you sometimes think of expanding the airport?

“No, that’s not our goal. First of all, we just don’t have the space. Our airport is surrounded by mountains and located next to a river and a busy motorway. This makes it impossible to enlarge the runway. In addition, it has also been agreed with local residents that there may be a maximum of 10,000 movements per year. We’re about to reach that number. Apart from that, we also do not have the ambition to become bigger. It is fine the way it is now. Because we are so small, we know most customers very well. They know they can come to us for efficient service, quality and discretion. We have a small team of 19 employees (25 in the high season) who put their heart and soul into giving every passenger a warm welcome to the Gulf of Saint-Tropez.”

nier te catalogiseren, te beheren en te delen. Olivier Marian, mede-oprichter en CSO, ontfermt zich al meer dan tien

jaar over de kunstcollectie van zijn ouders, die gepassioneerde verzamelaars zijn. “Samen met mijn echtgenote begon ik mee te gaan met mijn ouders naar kunstbeurzen en galeries, om hun passie en hun manier van kunst verzamelen

beter te begrijpen. Zo stapte ik binnen in de kunstwereld en ontmoette ik veel kunstenaars, galeries, kunstverkopers en andere professionals. Ik ging op zoek naar een professioneel, modern systeem om de collectie van mijn ouders

overzichtelijk en veilig te catalogiseren. Maar ik vond geen geschikte oplossing. Uiteindelijk kwam ik in contact met Philippe Gellman en Marek Zabicki. Zij hadden te kampen met dezelfde problematiek en met ons drie richtten we

Arteïa op in 2016. Hugues en Marie Taittinger, twee fervente kunstverzamelaars, stapten mee in ons project. Intussen hebben we al heel wat verzamelaars aangetrokken die mee investeren in Arteïa,” vertelt hij.

In the meantime, we have already attracted a lot of collectors who are also investing in Arteïa”, he says.

Welke meerwaarde biedt Arteïa aan kunstverzamelaars?

Dat gaat van prijzen, aankopen, verkopen en contracten tot stockage, logistiek, verzekeringen en restauratie. Op die manier komen kunstcollecties veel meer ‘tot leven’. Stel, je zit op restaurant of je bent op een beurs aanwezig met andere kunstverzamelaars. Dan kan je via Arteïa makkelijk één of meerdere werken uit je verzameling tonen op je smartphone of je tablet. Met enkele klikken kan je ook iets delen met anderen. Het spreekt voor zich dat dit allemaal uiterst veilig gebeurt, want de meeste verzamelaars zijn erg gesteld op discretie. Terecht, want een kunstcollectie is echt iets ‘intiem’.”

Wat verwacht je voor de toekomst van Arteïa?

“Arteïa is ‘one of a kind’, er is geen vergelijkbare oplossing op de markt vandaag. We zien de toekomst dus positief tegemoet. Zeker ook omdat we merken dat er vandaag veel jonge verzamelaars bij komen, die een pak sneller ‘gewonnen’ zijn voor de vele voordelen van een online platform voor catalogisering. Uiteraard willen we Arteïa alleen maar beter maken. In de toekomst willen we bijvoorbeeld transacties tussen verzamelaars mogelijk maken, zodat ze zaken kunnen doen onder elkaar in een professionele omgeving.”

What added value does Arteïa offer to art collectors?

“It is a well-arranged platform for managing art collections in a very simple way. You certainly don’t have to be a real computer expert like me to pull it off. (laughs) As a user, you have a clear view of your art collection at all times. You get a very complete picture. This ranges from prices, purchases, sales and contracts to storage, logistics, insurance and restoration.

In this way, art collections come much more ‘alive’. Suppose you are at a restaurant or you are at a fair with other art collectors. Then you can easily show one or more works from your collection on your smartphone or tablet via Arteïa. With just a few clicks you can also share something with others. It goes without saying that this is all done in an extremely safe way, because most collectors are very fond of discretion. Rightly so, because an art collection is really something ‘intimate’.”

What do you expect for the future of Arteïa?

“Arteïa is one of a kind, there is no comparable solution on the market today. So we have a positive outlook for the future.

Especially since we notice that many young collectors are joining today, who are much easier won over by the many benefits of an online cataloguing platform. Of course, we only want to make Arteïa better. In the future, for example, we want to make transactions between collectors possible, which will allow them to do business among each other in a professional environment.”

CHANEL De uurwerken van Chanel zijn niet vervaardigd uit geel of roze goud, maar ‘beige’ goud, een exclusieve kleur edelmetaal die werd uitgevonden door Maison Chanel in 2014. De kleur beige is eigen aan het merk. Het was dan ook de lievelingskleur van ontwerpster Gabrielle Chanel.

Longines De gekende Master collectie van Longines breidt haar assortiment opnieuw uit met een buitengewoon uurwerk. Het model heeft vanaf nu ook een jaarkalender, wat ten zeerste geapprecieerd zal worden door de echte uurwerkfanaten onder ons.

Bentley launches the Continental GT Convertible with the well-known 6.0 W12 power source, which, just like in the coupé, produces 635 hp. The Continental GT Convertible sprints to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 333 km/h. The four-wheel drive and robotic eight-speed gearbox with double clutch ensure that everything runs quickly and comfortably. Bentley has already announced a 4.0 V8 version for 2020, which, with its 550 hp output, could hardly be inferior to its larger W12 brother.

a familiar face in the show ‘Smaak’ on television channel Vitaya. She is also editor-in-chief of ‘Ken Wijn Magazine’, the

magazine of the Flemish Wine Guild, and published four editions of her supermarket wine guide ‘1001 Supermarktwijnen’. We had the honour to talk to this ‘grande dame’ of Belgian wine journalism.

Dag Simonne, eerst en vooral proficiat met je ‘bekroning’ tot Wine Lady of the Year 2019! Hoe ben je eigenlijk in de wijnwereld beland?

“Ik heb een klinisch-chemische opleiding. Ik heb dertig jaar aan de Universiteit van Gent gewerkt aan diverse scheikundige projecten. Ik was wel altijd al een wijnliefhebber. Door mijn studie-achtergrond was ik vooral geïnteresseerd in de samenstelling van wijnen en de combinaties van ingrediënten waardoor een bepaalde smaak ontstaat. In 1980 volgde ik een wijncursus, puur uit interesse. Zo ging de bal aan het rollen, want kort daarna begon ik zelf les te geven over wijn in het volwassenenonderwijs. Een student had connecties bij de krant en mede dankzij de vele relaties in de wijnwereld die ik al had, werd ik in 2000 wijnjournaliste bij De Standaard. Vandaag, op mijn 72ste, geef ik nog steeds les en schrijf ik nog altijd heel regelmatig voor de krant.”

Wat vind je zo leuk aan wijnjournalistiek?

“Het feit dat ik altijd blijf bijleren. Tijdens persreizen is er veel contact met de wijnbouwers en de handelaars. Zo kom ik heel wat technische zaken te weten over de wijn, en hoe de wijnbouwers er telkens hun eigen touch aan geven. Op die manier kan ik mijn beoordelingen goed onderbouwen en uitleggen aan de lezers waarom een wijn minder hoog scoort, of juist heel goed. Vernietigende commentaren schrijf ik niet, uit respect voor de handelaars en wijnboeren. Vind ik een wijn echt niet goed? Dan schrijf ik er niet over, punt. Ik schrijf wel altijd heel eerlijk en correct, waardoor ik door de jaren heen goede vertrouwensrelaties heb opgebouwd.”

Hi Simonne, first and foremost congratulations on your Wine Lady of the Year 2019 award! How did you end up in the world of wine?

“I have a clinical chemistry education. I spent thirty years at the University of Ghent working on various chemical projects.

Nevertheless, I have always been a wine lover. Because of my study background, I was particularly interested in the composition of wines, the combinations of ingredients that create a certain taste. In 1980 I took a wine course, purely out of interest. That’s how the ball started rolling, because shortly afterwards I started teaching about wine in adult education myself.

A student had connections with the newspaper and thanks to the many relationships in the wine world that I already had, I became a wine journalist at De Standaard in 2000. Today, at the age of 72, I still teach and I still write for the newspaper on a regular basis.”

What do you like about wine journalism?

“The fact that I’m always learning. During press trips there is a lot of contact with winemakers and traders. That way, I learn a lot about the technical aspects of wine, and how winemakers give it their own touch. This helps me to substantiate my reviews and explain to the readers why a wine scores not that well, or very well. I don’t write destructive comments, out of respect for the merchants and winemakers. What if I really dislike a wine? Then I don’t write about it, period. I always write very honestly and correctly, which has allowed me to build up good relationships of trust over the years.”

Is it difficult, as a woman in a predominantly male wine world?

“Definitely. There are a lot of women who are interested in wine, but only few take the step to be professionally involved, as I did in 2000. You have to travel a lot to learn and grow in your profession. It is only there that you learn your profession, because you have contact with colleagues from all over the world with whom you can exchange experiences and ideas.

The many trips deter many women because it is difficult to combine with family life. I was often the only woman in the group on press trips and I really had to prove myself. It helped that I worked for the newspaper, and eventually they realized that I did know something about it.” (laughs)

Are there certain hypes or trends in the wine world, and how do you feel about them?

“Rosé wines are immensely popular, that started around the hot summer of 2003. Rosé is fresh, fruity, elegant, I would even say crispy. That appeals to many people, and rightly so. I certainly don’t think this is an overrated hype. What I am more critically about is organic wines. Firstly, the term itself is not correct, because we should actually say ‘wine from organic cultivation’. But even so, wine is a natural product anyway, the result of natural fermentation. I don’t quite get the hype. I’m sure it will blow over again.’

Do you have a favourite wine country?

“That’s hard to say. Every country has something that I love. I often drink Italian and Spanish wines, but a lot depends on the moment. In my wine cellar there are many different types of wine. There are also many good Belgian winegrowers. I have seen the Belgian wine culture start with difficulty. But recently I was a member of the jury in a Belgian wine competition and I was very surprised by the taste and quality of the wines, especially the white and sparkling ones. In Belgium we have a rich gastronomic culture and beautiful local products. Our wines are certainly part of that!”

Can you actually still enjoy a good glass of wine, or does a kind of ‘quirk of the trade’ always come up?

“I can still really enjoy a nice wine that is perfectly balanced. Of course I have to taste a lot, but if I really like something, I dare to ask for an extra glass after a tasting. (laughs) My ideal ‘wine moment’ is in the evening on my couch, with a small snack. I don’t drink more than two glasses a day. Even when friends come over, we always drink wine. It is really something that should be enjoyed to the fullest.”

Is het moeilijk, als vrouw in een overwegend mannelijke wijnwereld?

“Toch wel hoor. Er zijn heel wat vrouwen die geïnteresseerd zijn in wijn, maar weinigen zetten de stap om er professioneel mee bezig te zijn, zoals ik deed in 2000. Je moet veel reizen om bij te leren en te groeien in je vak. Het is pas daar dat je je beroep leert, doordat je contact hebt met collega’s van overal met wie je ervaringen en ideeën kan uitwisselen. Dat vele reizen schrikt veel vrouwen af want het is moeilijk te combineren met het gezinsleven. Ik was op persreizen vaak de enige vrouw in de groep en ik heb me echt wel moeten bewijzen. Het hielp wel dat ik voor de krant werkte, en op den duur begonnen ze in te zien dat ik er toch wel wat van kende.” (lacht)

Zijn er bepaalde hypes of trends in de wijnwereld, en hoe sta je daartegenover?

“Roséwijnen zijn immens populair, dat is ongeveer begonnen in de hete zomer van 2003. Rosé is fris, fruitig, elegant, ik zou zelfs zeggen krokant. Dat spreekt veel mensen aan, en terecht. Ik vind dit zeker geen overroepen hype. Waar ik wel kritischer naar kijk, zijn biowijnen. Ten eerste is de term op zich niet juist, want we moeten eigenlijk zeggen ‘wijn van biologische teelt’. Maar dan nog, wijn is sowieso een natuurlijk product, het resultaat van natuurlijke gisting. Ik begrijp de hype niet helemaal. Het zal wel weer overwaaien.”

Heb je een favoriet wijnland?

“Dat is moeilijk om te zeggen. Elk land heeft wel iets waar ik van hou. Ik drink vaak Italiaanse en Spaanse wijnen, maar veel hangt af van het moment. In mijn wijnkelder liggen dan ook veel verschillende wijnsoorten. Er zijn trouwens ook veel goede Belgische wijnbouwers. Ik heb de Belgische wijncultuur moeizaam zien starten. Maar onlangs was ik jurylid in een Belgische wijnwedstrijd en ik was heel erg verrast door de smaak en de kwaliteit van de wijnen, vooral de witte en de mousserende. In België hebben we een rijke gastronomische cultuur en schitterende streekproducten. Onze wijnen horen daar zeker ook bij!”

Kan je eigenlijk nog genieten van een goed glas wijn, of komt er altijd een soort ‘beroepsmisvorming’ naar boven?

“Ik kan echt nog genieten van een mooie wijn die perfect in balans is. Uiteraard moet ik veel proeven, maar als ik iets echt lekker vind, durf ik na een proeverij gerust nog een extra glas te vragen. (lacht) Mijn ideale ‘wijnmoment’ is ’s avonds in de zetel, met een klein hapje erbij. Ik drink wel niet meer dan twee glazen per dag. Ook als er vrienden langskomen, drinken we altijd wijn. Het blijft echt iets om intens van te genieten.”

Hoe is de Zoute Grand Prix destijds eigenlijk ontstaan?

Filip: Het was in 2007 dat ik tijdens een slapeloze nacht - enkele felle donderslagen bij een onweer hadden mij gewekt achter mijn bureau ben gekropen. Ik ben pas gestopt toen ik een concreet plan én een logo had voor een Zoute Automobile Club. Datzelfde moment heb ik ook het idee van de Zoute Grand Prix op papier gezet, iets wat al langer in mijn hoofd speelde. Het eerste idee voor de naam Zoute Rally was trouwens ‘The Zoute 500 Miles’. Het zijn er uiteindelijk 250 km per dag geworden en draagt vandaag de naam Zoute Rally® by Stow. Eerst heb ik er mijn broer David warm voor gemaakt en nog wat later vroeg ik Philippe Van de Ryse mee aan boord. Philippe had de ervaring op vlak van events organiseren en mijn broer en ik zijn bij wijze van spreken opgevoed tussen de auto’s. Met ons drie vormden we meteen een sterk en uitgebalanceerd team. Zo ontstond enerzijds de Zoute Automobile Club vzw, een nationale vereniging van autocollectioneurs die een link hebben met Knokke-Heist. We tellen maximum 100 leden + 1 voorzitter en jaarlijks organiseren we enkele schitterende oldtimer rally’s in binnen- en buitenland voor de leden. Een op-en-top beleving van de automobielsport is onze doelstelling. Anderzijds richtten we samen de Zoute Events bvba op, die jaarlijks de Zoute Grand Prix organiseert.

Beide organisaties zijn strikt gescheiden.

David: We wilden graag een classic car rally organiseren, waarbij werkelijk alles klopte. Samen met mijn broer Filip had ik al heel wat rally’s gereden, maar tot onze grote frustratie was dat vaak niet in orde. Soms was het eten slecht of sliepen we in een triestig hotel, nog een andere keer werd het last-minute afgeschaft, waardoor we ons weekend in rook zagen opgaan. Dat kon beter en zo rijpte ons plan voor de Zoute Rally.

Philippe: Bovendien was er bij de automerken nood aan een ontspannen kader om hun beste klanten te ontvangen. Met de Zoute Top Marques kregen we algauw een aantal Belgische premières voor elkaar en ook het grote publiek smulde er al snel van.

How did the Zoute Grand Prix originate at the time?

Filip: It was in 2007 that I crawled behind my desk during a sleepless night – a few fierce thunderclaps in a thunderstorm had woken me up. I did not stop until I had a concrete plan plus a logo for a Zoute Automobile Club. That very night I also put the idea of ​​the Zoute Grand Prix on paper, something that had been going around in my head for some time. By the way, the first idea for the Zoute Rally’s name was ‘The Zoute 500 Miles’. It eventually became 250 km per day and is now called Zoute Rally® by Stow. First, I drew in my brother David and a bit later I asked Philippe Van de Ryse to join us. Philippe was quite experienced in organizing events and my brother and I were raised between the cars, so to speak. The three of us formed a strong and balanced team from the get-go. This is how the Zoute Automobile Club vzw, a national association of car collectors who have a connection with Knokke-Heist, was created. We have a maximum of 100 members + 1 chairman and every year we organize some great old timer rallies for the members, both at home and abroad. Our goal is experience motorsport to the fullest. On the other hand, we founded Zoute Events bvba, which organizes the Zoute Grand Prix every year. Both organizations are strictly separated.

David: We wanted to organize a classic car rally, where everything was just right. Together with my brother Filip I had already participated in a lot of rallies, but time after time we were frustrated about things that were not arranged well. Sometimes the food was bad or we slept in a poor hotel, another time the event was cancelled at the last minute, which was quite a disappointment. We knew this could be done better and that is how our plan for the Zoute Rally matured.

Philippe: In addition, the car brands needed a relaxed setting in which they could welcome their best customers. With the Zoute Top Marques we soon managed to host a number of Belgian premieres and it didn’t take long before the general public enjoyed it too.

How have you seen the spectator numbers evolve over the years?

Filip: The first edition in 2010 attracted 5,000 spectators. The year after it was already 80,000 to 100,000. During our most recent edition in 2018, we welcomed a record number of 268,000 spectators.

What is the nicest reaction you have ever received about the Zoute Grand Prix?

Filip: That must have been during an interview with one of our workers on Focus-WTV. The journalist asked him if he was not overwhelmed by the wealth and luxury. The man replied: “Just let me enjoy it, it’s free and I would like to continue doing this for a long time!” (laughs)

Philippe: I have always really enjoyed it when traders came to tell me that they had experienced the best weekend in decades.

David: For me personally, that was when we were still driving ourselves, the moment we drove on the stage and we received a big applause from the large crowd.

What was the most expensive car ever sold at the Zoute Sale by Bonhams?

Philippe: That must have been in 2017. Then a Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet from 2017 was auctioned for a whopping 1,428,000 euros. Only 99 cars were made of this type and Mercedes offered the very last one at our auction, with the agreement that the full proceeds, including the basic amount of the car, would be donated to the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation, which helps children in need worldwide.

Hoe hebben jullie de toeschouwersaantallen door de jaren heen zien evolueren?

Wat is de leukste reactie die jullie ooit gekregen hebben over de Zoute Grand Prix?

Filip: Dat moet tijdens een interview met een arbeider op Focus-WTV geweest zijn. De journalist vroeg hem of hij niet overdonderd was door de weelde en de luxe. Die man antwoordde: “Laat mij genieten, het is gratis en het mag nog lang blijven duren!” (lacht)

Philippe: Ik heb er altijd enorm van genoten wanneer handelaars mij kwamen zeggen dat ze het beste weekend in tientallen jaren hadden beleefd.

David: Voor mij persoonlijk was dat toen we indertijd nog zelf meereden, het moment dat we over het podium kwamen gereden en we een groot applaus kregen van het talrijk opgekomen publiek.

Wat was de duurste wagen ooit verkocht tijdens de Zoute Sale by Bonhams?

Philippe: Dat moet in 2017 geweest zijn. Toen werd er een Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet uit 2017 geveild voor maar liefst 1.428.000 euro. Van die wagen waren er slechts 99 gemaakt en Mercedes bood het allerlaatste exemplaar aan op onze veiling, met de afspraak dat de volledige opbrengst, inclusief het basisbedrag van de auto, zou worden geschonken aan Laureus Sport for Good Foundation die wereldwijd kinderen in nood helpt.

De deelnemers aan de Zoute Rally hebben de keuze tussen de regulariteitsrally of de balade. Wat houdt ‘regularity’ eigenlijk precies in?

David: In de regulariteitsrally worden verschillende regelmatigheidstesten gereden tegen de tijd. Hierbij wordt de gemiddelde snelheid van de deelnemers nauwkeurig gemeten op het parcours van de proef. Ze ontvangen bij de start een road book dat alle testen omschrijft. Dit rijden ze zo nauwkeurig mogelijk uit, terwijl ze niet per sé snel, maar vooral precies moeten rijden. Hun positie wordt op verschillende geheime plaatsen geregistreerd en moet dan overeenkomen met de opgelegde tijd. Deze gedeeltes van het parcours vergen soms wat denk- en rekenwerk van de deelnemers. Het spreekt voor zich dat wij het hen als organisatie ook niet altijd even gemakkelijk maken (lacht). Elke seconde te vroeg of te laat op de gemiddelde snelheid levert één of meerdere strafpunten op, waardoor ze zakken in het klassement. De gemiddelde snelheid is nooit hoger dan 45 km/u, maar kan zakken tot 30 km/u of minder naargelang de omstandigheden.

Wat voor lekkers kunnen jullie reeds aankondigen voor deze speciale tiende editie?

Filip, Philippe en David in koor: dat houden we als verrassing voor 10, 11, 12 en 13 oktober 2019!

The participants of the Zoute Rally have the choice between the regularity rally or the drive. What does ‘regularity’ mean exactly?

David: In the regularity rally, various regularity tests are driven against time. The average speed of the participants is accurately measured on the course of the test. At the start they receive a road book that describes all the tests. They drive these as accurately as possible, while not necessarily having to drive fast, but rather precisely. Their position is recorded at different secret places and must then correspond to the time set. These parts of the course sometimes require some thinking and calculation work from the participants. It goes without saying that we don’t always make it easy for them as an organization (laughs). Every second too early or too late compared to the average speed results in one or more penalty points, which causes them to drop in the rankings. The average speed never exceeds 45 km/h, but can drop to 30 km/h or less depending on the circumstances.

Which scoops can you already disclose for this special tenth edition?
