This newsletter has a history as old as our National Organization, but has been dormant for some time.

A s w e r e v i v e t h e N a t i o n a l n e w s l e t t e r, u n d e r t h e n e w title The Lioness Loop, our goal is to communicate important information to our Sisters and to communicate who we are to the world.

Meet your Newsletter Committee: Chair Ali KidderMostrom (Epsilon Alum) currently practices Forensic Chemistry in Chicago and is proud to serve as the Expansion Representative for the Lambda Colony at DePaul U n i v e r s i t y.

Copy editing is provided by Michelle Fox (Epsilon Alum); Michelle works as a budget analyst for defense contractor Northrop Grumman.

Makayla Natrop (Epsilon Alum) is currently an Architectural Designer in Tw i n C i t i e s , M i n n e s o t a a n d i s t h e S i s t e r b e h i n d t h i s publication’s layout and design.

UPDATES FALL 2018

What I’ve leared during my 3 months on the National Board... – Kellee Hartjen, National Director of Operations.

When I took up the NDoO position at the National Convention in July, I was fully aware of how much energy and effort this position required. As part of the social media committee, I reported to the NDoO, Atisha Morrison (now Director of Administration), and we talked constantly about everything happening in the National Organization. Atisha also walked me through every responsibility and explained how she handled some of the frequent problems that had popped up during her tenure. So, I was prepared for my duties on paper.

What I didn’t image was how much our Chapters and women of Alpha Sigma Kappa would stick with my thoughts and actions every single day. During Chapter Chats, I get a glimpse of how much work each Chapter (especially the executive board) is putting into making their communities a better place and their Sisters better leaders in STEM. I also hear of some individual ventures that our women are tackling such as research, senior design projects, or applying to graduate schools. These moments are so inspiring to me, and I find myself thinking about that sister who is studying for her MCAT or how that philanthropy event is going. Even scrolling through Instagram (add me heyyy) makes me feel uplifted when I see our sisters accomplishing amazing things while supporting each other all the way.

Back in September, I had the opportunity to recruit with the Zeta Chapter at University of Maryland –Baltimore County. Despite the fact that I’m from a different university and fall firmly outside the age range of most PNMs (hello, fellow kids), it was easy to talk up the simple, yet incredible way Alpha Sigma Kappa provides women a family through a more laid back style of sorority life. I can’t wait to see this more universities, and I hope as we grow, we can continue to develop an unstoppable alumnae network in every city. So, if you ever need help brainstorming new activities for Candidate education or want to improve your philanthropy events, or even just want to talk some women in tech shop, don’t ever hesitate to reach out. There’s someone in your corner all the way in the southeast!

The National Documents Committee At the 2018 Convention this past July, several updates to the National Constitution and Policies were passed. The new versions of these documents were just recently released, so we wanted to make sure you knew the most important changes that could apply to you.

Constitution: Clauses were added to ensure that anyone who identifies as a woman will always be welcome in our organization and any Members who change their gender status will always be allowed to stay in our organization. This change was inspired by similar actions made by Alpha Chi Omega a few years ago and we hope more Greek organizations will do the same.

Scholastic Policy: This policy previously stated that the Vice President will give any Sister who does not meet the grade requirements a “pep talk.�

We revamped this procedure to be more specific and helpful to Sisters who are struggling with their grades by giving the Vice President more specific responsibilities and requiring her to help the Sister who is struggling to set goals and make plans, if that Sister desires.

Deactivation Policy and Chapter Discipline Policy: Significant changes were made to these policies. We encourage all Sisters, especially Chapter leadership, to review these very important policies as soon as possible.

The National Exploratory Committee

During the 2017 Convention, the National Board of Directors (NBoD) began a discussion with the delegation regarding the disconnect in our national operations. The current workflow had become burdensome and they understood it was affecting their interactions with Sisters. Our structure is not sustainable for future growth and chapters ultimately need more outreach for optimal success.

The Exploratory Committee was formed with the following goals in mind:

1. Map & assess current structure of national organization.

2. Research best practices of organizations similar to our size and

larger.

3. Evaluate Sisters awareness of NBoD.

4. Brainstorm options for better communication & outreach.

5. Propose solutions to improve operations on multiple levels:

Colony, Active, Alumnae.

Following the convention, the committee created and surveyed close to 100 Colony, Active, and Alumnae Sisters. We wanted to start with the basics. We asked Sisters to describe our national structure, name the NBoD positions, describe her level of communication from the board, and the level of education they received during their time in ΑΣΚ. We also asked Sisters to list their past national positions held along with their interest in future involvement. This includes NBoD positions, National Expansion Representatives, working on a committee, planning a National Convention, or becoming a Chapter liaison.

The survey highlighted common responses from both Active and graduated Sisters.

A significant number of Sisters could not clearly describe our national structure or name all the board positions. Most women agreed that there isn’t enough information coming from the NBoD and they’d like to know more about the organization via email, Facebook, call-in meetings and a quarterly newsletter. Some Sisters also discussed the need for accountability and a checks and balances system between national positions. Only 8% of the Active Sisters surveyed said they were interested in a national position after graduation. However, more Sisters were interested in volunteering for a middle tier position than any other national position.

Our committee members also researched other organizations that are larger than Alpha Sigma Kappa and maintain membership that we would like to reach in five to ten years.

Many Greek organizations maintain two to four tiers of national positions to act as support to their Active Chapters and Alumnae Members. As our organization grows, we need to build positions that meet the demands of our Sisters and cover the workload in an efficient and effective manner.

All of this information was presented at the National Convention in 2018. We highlighted two big themes:

1. We need to establish a continuous learning program that caters to the needs of Sisters on all levels: Colony, Chapter, and Alumnae Sisters.

2. We need to establish a middle tier of national positions to act as regional directors for Active Chapters. They will be their immediate resource for assistance and their channel for information coming from the NBoD.

Moving forward, the Exploratory Committee is tasked with creating both of these items to propose at the 2019 Convention. Our committee will be reaching out to Sisters to start discussions, so be on the lookout for communications.

Alpha Sigma Kappa is at a pivotal point in our organizational development. We understand the changes we make now are intended to help our organization and Sisters be successful in the years to come.

2018 National Scholarship Recipients This $1,000 scholarship is awarded to an Active Member studying for either undergraduate or graduate degrees and can be used toward tuition and books. The 2018 National Scholarship essay topic was “Leadership.” We had many generous donations and were able to award an additional $500 scholarship to the first runner-up. The National Scholarship Committee met on June 10, 2018 when all essays were reviewed and the committee collectively decided on recipients.

We are pleased to announce Jenna Teberg of the Epsilon Chapter is our overall 2018 National Scholarship recipient and Shana Hilgerson of the Epsilon Chapter is our first runner-up.

My name is Jenna Teberg. I’m a senior in Industrial Engineering from Cedar Rapids IA. I am a part of the Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Sigma Kappa at Iowa State University in Ames Iowa. I joined Alpha Sigma Kappa my first semester of freshman year. Currently I am on a semester long engineering internship for Keurig Dr. Pepper in Ottumwa Iowa. Winning the National Foundation Scholarship will help me pay for my last semesters at Iowa State. I can’t thank you enough for the opportunities Alpha Sigma Kappa has given me. Since I initiated I have held lip-sync chair, yell like hell chair, social chair/formal chair, and most recently vice president of operations.

I’ve gotten the chance to participate in intramural, Greek week, homecoming, philanthropies, community service projects, socials, and formals. Most importantly I’ve gotten to make countless memories and build friendships for life. I love Alpha Sigma Kappa because this sisterhood has given me a chance to break out of my shell and it has been a place for me to build my skills and relationships and find my home away from home.

Nu

University of Central Florida Orlando, FL Established 09/15/2018

On September 15th,

the Nu Chapter of Alpha Sigma Kappa was installed at the University of Central Florida with 24 Sisters. The Founders have strived to establish their sisterhood quickly since colonizing in September of 2017, completing all the requirements to petition to form a Chapter in front of the delegation at National Convention in July. In addition to creating a foundation for their local group through recruiting enough women to sustain a thriving group, writing bylaws and documents, hosting community service and academic events, and developing leaders, colonies also have a number of National requirements to fulfill as well. For example, the Nu Founders developed a values statement as a contribution to the National Organization, which was ratified in Washington D.C. at the National Convention. Each Sister also completed an interview with a National Director before being initiated. In Orlando, Alumnae, members of the National Board, and the Nu women spent the day celebrating their installation.

According to Samantha LoPilato, Nu’s External Vice President: “During the ceremony there was this mutual feeling between Nu sisters of ‘I can’t believe this is happening. !

Finally...’ I’m pretty sure there were some tears.” Clearly, the Nu Chapter is already an inspirational group of women on the University of Central Florida campus, and in our own sisterhood. Have no doubt, they are well on their way. A few hours after their Installation Ceremony, the Actives held a Candidate Ceremony for the 10 women of the Beta class – the brand-new Nu Chapter is nonstop.

Sometimes a degree in engineering can lead you to unexpected places...

For Sharon (Shae) Kosmalski, it led her all over the United States and into a life with sled dogs. Shae is a Forest Engineer with the US Forest Service at Fremont-Winema National Forest in Lakeview, Oregon and was one of the Founders of Alpha Sigma Kappa – Women in Technical Studies during her time at the University of Minnesota.

Sister Spotlight SHAE KOSMALSKI

ALUM | ALPHA CHAPTER UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA | 1989-1994

L∞P: Where did you grow up?

SK: I was born in St. Paul and grew up in Babbitt, in northeast Minnesota.

L∞P: What was your major in school?

SK: I started in Chemical Engineering because my siblings, an older brother and younger sister, were both chemical engineers. When we got to quantum chemistry, my brain decided it wasn’t going there. I switched to Civil Engineering because a lot of chemistry would apply, but it was real and in front of you.

L∞P: How did you end up studying engineering?

SK: I was a late bloomer. In high school, math and science were incomprehensible to me…I sucked at it. I had my daughter when I was young and having her prompted me to go back to college. What a difference a couple of years makes! I did my first two years at a community college and once I had this really good GPA and was doing well in math and science, I went to UMN because they had a good technical reputation.

L∞P: You were one of the Founders of Alpha Sigma Kappa; how did you first become involved with ΑΣΚ?

SK: They were the Little Sisters of Triangle.

I think I walked up to a rush meeting all on my own, I must have seen it in the University paper. The University is so big, I kind of felt lost there… I really felt lost there. I was looking for some way to meet some folks, some gals particularly, and I wanted to have fun too. These were a bunch of gals who were in science and attached to this engineering fraternity. I was primarily there for moral support. There were some amazing gals who had the time and the drive – it was pretty cool.

L∞P: What is one great memory you have of ΑΣΚ?

SK: We had some kind of an event where the Brothers and the Sisters split into groups and did these skits. Ours had us starting out young and beautiful then transforming into old ladies. It was a lot of fun!

L∞P: Do you stay in touch with your ΑΣΚ Sisters?

SK: Yes, my Little and a couple of the other gals that are Founders. Now, social media has gotten me involved again. Seeing what ΑΣΚ has become because of new amazing women, just to see how much it has grown… life is pretty full.

L∞P: If a student was considering joining ΑΣΚ, would you recommend it to her and why?

SK: Absolutely, for the exact same reason why I looked to ΑΣΚ – that combination of social support and academic support – you’re part of a family, you’re part of a tribe.

L∞P: Can you describe the career path that led you to your current job?

SK: The best advice I ever received was to try to get a job with the Forest Service, because they hire Civil Engineers and there’s always a shortage, because it’s not what you think it is. I did seasonal work which turned into a co-op and then three seasons in Park Falls, WI after graduation. As a Forest Service Civil Engineer, I have moved around a lot and lived in all these beautiful forest locations: Idaho, Montana, Alaska, Minnesota, Colorado and Oregon. Careerwise, I really like where I am right now. I supervise a small group of engineers and get to go out and still be a little technical doing bridge designs.

L∞P: What is your biggest achievement in life to date?

SK: My daughter. She is in health services and works in adult special ed. She is all about taking care of other people. She also writes the most wonderful hand-written notes in my Mother’s Day and birthday cards every year. Her daughter, my granddaughter, is the love of my life. She helps me reconnect with the fun and goofy side of myself. I’ve been fortunate to live really close to them and spend a lot of time with them; we have lots of adventures. I had her running a dog sled team when she was eight and she became an awesome mountain biker this summer (at 12).

L∞P: So, sled dogs...

SK: It’s my life. I got my first two dogs when I was 30 and was recovering from back surgery. As they got older and would run down the trail ahead of me, I thought “I wonder if they would pull me.” I decided to get my first Siberian when the other dogs got older. Siberians are kind of a special breed.

It’s that crazy energy, especially when it gets cold…they go bonkers. To see their purpose come out in them, seeing the instincts kick in… usually within one run they are like “oh yeah, this is what I’m all about”.

L∞P: What kind of people have you met running sled dogs?

SK: When I started going to races, I was volunteering and getting to know the racers.

There are mushers in every nook and cranny across the country. I met an older gentleman from Montana, who had a Doctorate in math and had been breeding Siberians for racing.

He just started talking to me and teaching me and telling me things and became my mentor. I was eager and ate it up. I had to gain his trust to run his dogs.

I also met my ex-husband at a huskies conference – he was a speaker. I fell in love with a man with 30 dogs and he fell so hard in love with me that he moved those 30 dogs from Alaska to Idaho. After we separated, I took some time to decide what running dogs really meant to me. I slowly started adding a dog here and there; now I have 14.

L∞P: What does a typically day as a musher look like for you?

SK: I get up, whether I want to or not, and take about an hour and a half to care for the dogs before going to work. I let everybody run around in the big yard. Over half my dogs are rescues; when I can, I help with rescue transport.

It’s a ton of work to get your team ready to run. You have to get the rig and lines, line up screaming dogs, pull yourself free and hope you don’t die. Then you’re there and you’re with the dogs and they get to be a team. When you get back to kennel then you have to undo everything. It’s not like a mountain bike where you can just jump on.

I think it’s a great lifestyle for anybody with a mathematical or scientific mind. You have to consider a lot of factors: foods (what kind, what additives, meat or no meat), what kind of harnesses do the dogs like, this leader or that leader, short run or long run… there’s just no end.

L∞P: What do you enjoy most about running dogs and raising them?

SK: We’re a pack, we’re a team, we’re a tribe.

L∞P: What kind of dogs do you have?

SK: Two are heelers (they are so smart and love to be sled dogs too), Siberians, Alaskan Huskies, a half-Labrador (the only one with floppy ears). Of the 14, half of them are house dogs. When it was 90 degrees they were all in my house. They are my family, really.

L∞P: What surprised you most about working with sled dogs?

SK: That I’m still doing it. It’s a lot of work and a lot of expense – I’m like a dog rancher.

But, the longer I do it, the more I enjoy it.

A trip to Hawaii when Grandma sold her house and took the whole family on vacation; my daughter got to turn ten on the island of Maui Favorite book?

Deep Water Passage– about a woman and her male friend kayaking around Lake Superior; she faced a lot of personal and spiritual challenges and it made me realize it’s ok to be afraid When was the last time you laughed so hard you cried?

Last night – a thing I found on Facebook where people positioned themselves with statues... Really, people’s ingenuity What one superpower would you want?

Immortality – life is good and who knows what’s next...

Well, as long as I don’t get any older looking If you could only have one food for the rest or your life, what would it be?

WHAT WERE THEY UP TO THIS SUMMER?

BETA | AC CARLTON I was gifted the wonderful opportunity to complete an informative internship with Valero, experience life in a wildly new city, and represent my fellow queer friends in STEM at Norman’s first ever Pride.

APLHA | MOLLY GIER I learned how to row with a local rowing club! I am now a coxswain for the men’s crew team at the University of Minnesota, leading our boats in races. Row Gophs!

ZETA | COURTNEY COLSON I collected water samples for an NIH-funded summer research program at UMBC, in which I was a peer mentor for the research associates.

EPSILON | EMILY GAMBLE I worked at a butterfly conservatory in Mackinac island Michigan over the summer. I got to work with over a thousand lepidoptera every week and my daily commute to work was by bike!

IOTA | MICHAELA FORD

NU | SAMANTHA LOPILATO I had the privilege of being the delegate for what was the Nu Colony. The vote for Nu to become a Chapter gave me chills. Everyone was so kind and excited for all of us.

I went on a cruise with my family to Alaska and Canada, while in Ketchikan, AK we went to Adventure Karts.

I worked on developing a program to objectively determine latent fingerprint image quality measurements at Carnegie Mellon!

ETA | TAE SIERRA I was able to attend the ΑΣΚ 2018 National Convention in Washington DC!

MU | NATALIE MELTON I rode with Allegheny General LifeFlights (my first time in a helicopter!) and helped care for critically ill patients en route to the hospital as an EMT. I also researched Myosin19, work that I presented at the 2018 ASCB Triangle Cytoskeleton Meeting!

KAPPA | ABBIE FORD I was in Denmark, studying Scandinavian furniture design while making my own chair out of a couple pieces of lumber and 43 plastic soda and water bottles!

Alexis Hecksher (Beta Alum) graduated in May and began her career as an Industrial Engineer in July.

Katy McNeil Meier (Beta Alum) moved to St. Louis in May and begins working as a Bridge Structural Engineer with Civil Design, Inc. on November 1.

Allison Quiroga (Beta Alum) graduated with her Civil Engineering PhD in May. Amelia Rinker (Epsilon Alum) graduated in May and moved to England to pursue her Master’s at the University of Leeds.

Danielle Shipley Crouch (Eta Alum) joined the New Mexico Air National Guard and completed Air Force Basic Training and Technical School.

Elli Earl (Theta Alum) moved to Paris, France to complete her undergraduate degree.

Meghan Lorenz (Theta Alum) was accepted into nursing school at Xavier University in Ohio.

Rebecca MacKay (Theta Alum) graduated from the Colorado Center for Medical Laboratory Science and started her career with Children’s Hospital Colorado.

Becky Rasch (Theta Alum) began working as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Interim HealthCare and returned to school to study Biology and Nutrition.

Points of Pride Awards and Recognitions Mary Albright (Alpha Alum) founded a new, women-led STEM and aerospace nonprofit organization, the Starbird Association.
