Finding Your Footing Again Support for Depression and Anxiety in LATER LIFE

by Edgerton Hospital Aging brings plenty of hard-earned wisdom, but it can also bring changes that feel heavier than expected.

Maybe you’ve lost a spouse or a close friend. Maybe health concerns have made life feel smaller. Maybe you’re caregiving for someone you love or adjusting to retirement, a move, or less independence. Sometimes the days start to feel quieter and worries or sadness start showing up more often.

If any of that sounds familiar, you’re not alone, and you don’t have to power through it by yourself.

Senior Life Solutions at Edgerton Hospital and Health Services is here for older adults, typically age 65+, who are experiencing depression or anxiety related to life changes often associated with aging. The goal is simple: help you SPRING–SUMMER 2026 SECOND ACT

feel like yourself again, reconnect with what matters to you, and build practical tools to navigate this season of life with more confidence and support.

• Caregiving stress and emotional exhaustion • Big transitions like retirement, moving, or changes in independence

Who might benefit?

People come to our program for many different reasons. Some common themes include:

Feeling down every once in a while is part of being human. But if sadness, worry, or feeling overwhelmed have been sticking around for weeks or months, it may be time to reach out for a higher level of support.

• Grief and loss that doesn’t seem to ease with time • Ongoing anxiety, stress, or feeling on edge • Depression, low motivation, or a loss of interest in things you used to enjoy • Loneliness or feeling disconnected • Difficulty adjusting to health changes, chronic conditions, or life after a hospitalization

What you get when you’re part of the program Senior Life Solutions is an outpatient program centered on therapy and whole person support. In addition to a confidential, comprehensive assessment to help you understand what you’re experiencing, we offer a range of therapies:

AGING & CAREGIVER RESOURCES | 7 • Group therapy, where you can learn skills, share experiences, and feel less alone • Individual therapy, so your unique needs are addressed, not just the group’s • Family therapy, because support systems matter We also help with medication education and management, with guidance from qualified professionals, as well as aftercare planning with a focus on continued support after you complete the program. Even though parts of the program are group-based, each participant is supported as an individual.

Here, you aren’t a number, and your story isn’t compared to anyone else’s.

A caring team focused on older adult mental health Participants are supported by a team that includes a board-certified psychiatrist, licensed therapists, a registered nurse, and other professionals dedicated to older adult mental health care.

Many people feel skeptical at first, which is perfectly normal. Some people who have completed the program were once in your shoes, so we’d like to share their testimonials:

Expand Your Living Space INTO THE OUTDOORS

Are you thinking about renovating or adding a room to blend the beauty and natural light of your property with the comfort of your interior spaces? Do you want an open porch, a screened porch, an enclosed porch, a threeseason room, or a sunroom? If you’re remodeling an existing space, some amenities are easier to add than others.

For instance, most porches have a ceiling light or fan but don’t necessarily have outlets. Once you understand the limitations of your existing space and the features and finishes SPRING–SUMMER 2026 SECOND ACT

you’d like to have, you’re ready to start planning.

Screened Porches Many people simply want to enclose an existing porch with screens. Such a room provides shelter from gentle showers, the midday sun, and pesky insects; however, this type of structure will still get moisture in the interior space. Planning for wind and heavier precipitation and exposure to elements is important so the space can be designed accordingly. The floor can be

decking, which often requires screening from below to repel insects, or it can be a traditional tongue-and-groove flooring, which is typically pitched to drain water. A screened porch can also have a concrete floor, which we often recommend if the location is likely to be damp. Whichever floor you choose, any structure attached to your home will require footings or a foundation.

Enclosed Porches Some clients want a screened porch that can be enclosed to extend its

GENERAL | 25 usage. A variety of options exist, from removable storm panels to combination storm windows to traditional windows permanently installed. Since any enclosed structure must comply with wind-shear building code requirements, you should plan and build accordingly.

Two-Season and Three-Season Sunrooms These rooms are similar to an enclosed porch but constructed to look and perform more like a four-season addition. These structures are typically designed to stay dry, with solid, level flooring and windows. They’re not connected to the central heating system of the house, hence the two-season or threeseason designation. They can include a fireplace or electric baseboard heat system that can be used on demand as needed. These spaces are much easier to convert to a fourseason finished room in the future, provided they’re properly air sealed and insulated.

Sunrooms Versus Family Room Additions The main difference between a four-season sunroom and a family room addition is the quantity of glass/windows installed in the space design. Both rooms are designed with finished interiors and exteriors. They incorporate temperature control heating and cooling systems for four-season enjoyment of the space.

Other Considerations Interior finishing options will impact the total cost of each project type. The ceiling rafters and plywood can remain exposed (least expensive), or solid wood paneling can be installed above the rafters to create a high-end look (most expensive). Drywall or wood paneling can be installed from within for a more finished look. Many lighting and trim features are available at different price points, and adding skylights is a popular option. A thoughtful, professional design process allows you to create a beautiful new space to better enjoy your interaction with the outdoors.

The Role of Purpose in Aging Well

Retirement often brings a long-awaited gift: time. For some, that means fewer obligations and more open hours than they’ve had in decades. That freedom may initially feel welcoming, but over time, the structure that once came from full-time work, caregiving, or other responsibilities fades or changes shape.

For years, structure and purpose were built into our daily lives through careers, raising children, caring for aging parents, or community roles.

Then, sometimes overnight, those defining roles shift or conclude. Some people may continue working part-time or remain present for family milestones, holidays, and important emotional support, but the rhythm and sense of daily identity can still feel different. For others, the days can feel unmoored, with less time feeling connected or engaged in something meaningful.

The concept of purpose may sound a bit abstract or like a fairy tale, but research shows it has measurable physical, social, and psychological benefits that shape how we age.

Over time, Cheryl has witnessed lives changed—even saved—through these kinds of connections. “You never know when serendipity will strike,” she says.

She also notes the high stakes of aging without these connections. “If people don’t notice you’re gone or call when you’re sick, you may start to question your place in the world.” That sense of place, of being missed and of mattering to others, is one way people experience purpose.

States: A National Study of Health & Wellbeing) helps explain how purpose matters to overall health. According to findings summarized in a MIDUS newsletter, “having a purpose is associated with better health and living longer.” People with a stronger sense of purpose tend to have reduced risk of heart attack and stroke. Even after accounting for factors such as smoking and weight, those with purpose live longer.

Purpose also influences how people experience chronic pain. MIDUS research found that people who participate in a wider range of social activities, such as volunteering and attending meetings, report less loneliness, lower risk of chronic pain, and fewer daily disruptions from pain.

Another study suggests that people who emphasized social connection and meaningful activity reported less pain interference and relied less on prescription pain medication.

So what does this look like in practice?

It can be hard to know where to start, especially when old networks have shifted. Programs like PLATO (Participatory Learning and Teaching Organization), based in Madison, Wisconsin, offer one pathway into

the kinds of engagement the research highlights. Through social outings and member-led classes and lectures covering diverse topics, PLATO creates structured opportunities for learning and connection later in life.

Behind these studies and organizations are real people who have found new sources of purpose and connection.

Take Cheryl Campbell, a retired electrical engineer who now teaches a PLATO course titled “On Being Mortal: Retaining Quality of Life as We Age.” She describes PLATO as a “nonintimidating way to make new connections.” In addition to her volunteer teaching, she organizes social meetups for Madison women 50+.

One of the central ideas Cheryl explores in her course is what’s called weak ties, or the acquaintances and casual relationships that form by getting out in the world. These aren’t lifelong friends or family members—strong ties—but they matter in ways that might not be obvious at first. Someone in a PLATO class might know about Medicare plan resources and help you navigate a confusing system. Someone who expects to see you each week might notice when you don’t show up and check in, potentially catching a

It’s where we raise our families, find comfort, and build memories. Yet for too many of our neighbors right here in Dane and Green Counties, this foundation is cracking. As we start this new year and consider what it means to give and share, we at Project Home want to shine a light on the quiet, often hidden, struggle of keeping a home—and the incredible power of a community that comes together to help.

In a region known for its vibrant energy and progressive spirit, the challenges of aging homes, rising costs, and accessibility needs can feel overwhelming. A senior citizen on a fixed income faces an impossible choice SPRING–SUMMER 2026 SECOND ACT

between a critical furnace repair and buying groceries. A young family can’t afford to fix a leaky roof, leading to mold and health issues. A person with a disability is trapped in their own home, unable to navigate a single step. These aren’t just isolated problems; they’re

widespread issues that threaten the very fabric of our neighborhoods.

A Community Powered Safety Net For 55 years, Project Home has stood as a beacon of hope, working to ensure that our neighbors can stay safe,

We’re not just a repair service; we’re a community-powered safety net. Our mission is to preserve and improve housing for low- to moderate-income residents in south central Wisconsin, with a special focus on the elderly, those with disabilities, and families with children. Our work is a testament to the belief that every person deserves to live with dignity and security in their own home.

For families struggling to make ends meet, the cost of heating and cooling a home can be a huge burden. Our Weatherization programs are designed to solve this by providing free upgrades that make homes more energy efficient and affordable. This work may include air sealing and insulating attics, insulating exterior walls, repairing or replacing inefficient furnaces, and even replacing inefficient refrigerators or freezers. These improvements don’t just reduce utility bills; they improve air quality and create a healthier living environment.

Whether it’s a leaky roof, faulty plumbing, or damaged siding, our team works to bring homes back to a stable condition. Additionally, our Serving Those Who Serve program provides dedicated support to veterans and military families, addressing critical repair needs to honor their commitment to our country. A cornerstone of this work is providing Accessibility Modifications, which is a lifeline for

hundreds of individuals. We retrofit homes with wheelchair ramps, grab bars, and roll-in showers, transforming a house from a barrier into a sanctuary.
