Adopters WELCOME
by Lisa Bernard
Sue Harris had gone through a number of changes. She lost her husband six years ago; moved into a Madison condo two years ago; and last summer, she hit the big 8-0. Even though she visits multiple times a week, Sue’s daughter, Shannon Barry, worried that her mom was lonely.
“My mom loves animals,” says Shannon. “When I was growing up, we had a house full of rescue animals. ... [But] my mom told me repeatedly that she didn’t
think she should adopt another animal because of her age.”
Shannon decided to take a chance and told Sue about Sooper, a 14-yearold cat available for adoption at Dane County Humane Society (DCHS). “We pretty much hopped right into the car and headed over. When my mom saw her and the other cats, she teared up, and I knew that it was going to work out. It was what she needed.”
DCHS practices an Adopters Welcome philosophy, meaning anyone who wants to love and care for a pet should have the opportunity to do so. DCHS doesn’t require adopters to go through a lengthy form or application process. Instead, DCHS counselors engage in a discussion with adopters to help them find the pet that best fits their lifestyle.
Despite removing barriers, the cost to bring an animal companion home may be out of reach for someone on a fixed
“It’s my sense that they both need each other, and I was overjoyed to see how quickly they seemed to fall into a rhythm with one another,” says Shannon. “I know it sounds cliché, but I think DCHS may have saved two lives, and for that, I am eternally grateful.”
income. To overcome this challenge, DCHS has partnered with Pets for the Elderly (PFE) Foundation to reduce the cost of adopting a companion animal for seniors age 60+. Thanks to an initial grant from the PFE Foundation, DCHS discounted adoption fees up to $50 for senior adopters.
In the first six months after the program was introduced, in June of 2021, 41 dogs, 57 cats, and 2 guinea pigs were adopted. The PFE program at DCHS has grown in popularity since, helping seniors adopt 210 dogs and 124 cats between 2022 and 2024. DCHS continues the partnership in 2025 and is increasing the discount to up to $75 per adoption.
Even though Sue could have afforded the adoption fee for Sooper, now named Luna, Shannon says, “Having it waived made it so much easier. This is such an incredible service. Bringing Luna home has been life-changing for my mom.”
When Sue brought Luna home, Luna immediately made herself comfortable. “It’s my sense that they both need each other, and I was overjoyed to see how quickly they seemed to fall into a rhythm with one another,” says Shannon. “I know it sounds cliché, but I think DCHS may have saved two lives, and for that, I am eternally grateful.”
After more than a month together, Sue and Luna are thriving. Shannon says, “My mom absolutely dotes on Luna and has a reason to get up in the morning again. Luna is gaining weight and playing more. My mom spends hours grooming her to get the knots out of her fur. Luna looks amazing and is such a sweet cat. Every time I go to my mom’s house, I find the two of them cuddling together on the recliner in my mom’s sunroom. They are two peas in a pod.”

Theater Bus: 50th Anniversary
It’s unusual to hear of a small, local nonprofit lasting 50 years, but here we are. Theater Bus began as an idea of the Wisconsin Union Theater and the community arts administrator. They wanted to bring older adults to Union Theater performances. By 1976, only
one year in, Theater Bus became an experimental project of the Wisconsin Union Theater and local senior centers. The goal was to increase attendance at the Young Artists in the Performing Arts series and to encourage older adults to enjoy events they might not otherwise
have access to. By 1977, Theater Bus had expanded to serving all of Dane County and surrounding areas.
The program was an immediate success, and per participants requests, other area theater events were added. When

an open house.
the Union Theater ultimately decided to drop out of the project, other supporting agencies continued the work to keep things going, including Attic Angels, Independent Living, Madison Housing Authority, the Coalition on Aging, the Jewish Community Council, Methodist Retirement Center, and Oakwood Village. In 1999, Theater Bus received a gift from a participant that enabled Theater Bus to become more financially sound and continue to grow.
Though Theater Bus has looked very different through the years, one thing remains the same: the core mission of assisting adults 55+ in having access to theatrical productions in the area. Fifty years ago, you could see a show and have lunch for $9.25. Thirty years ago, you could see a Fireside performance for $44, and for $2 more, you could request pick up at your home. Today, Theater Bus offers pick up locations on the west, south, and east sides of town. We travel to at least 36 shows a year and offer a wide variety of events to appeal to a broader audience: Milwaukee Brewers games, musicals, comedies, dramas, and social events.
Volunteers continue to handle a lot of the office work, including telephoning, mailing, and board decision-making. A committee of participants selects the shows that Theater Bus attends. Over
1,500 hours are recorded by volunteers annually, though it’s certainly much more in reality. The volunteers and participants are the core of Theater Bus. They’re the reason for Theater Bus’s 50 years of success and are great encouragers, financial supporters, and champion volunteers.
We’re excited to celebrate 50 years of success with all of you. Join us on August 12, 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., for an open house. Meet our director and board and enjoy delicious treats and register for door prizes.

RETIREMENT HOUSING & LONG-TERM CARE
Choices in LONG-TERM CARE
Perhaps your health needs or those of a loved one are changing, or you just want to downsize and start the next exciting chapter. Before you start taking tours of senior living residences, familiarize yourself with the available types of long-term care and where they fit on the following senior living continuum of care. Understanding the similarities and differences can help you choose the one that will provide the highest quality of life now and in the future.
Life-Lease Developments
Individuals 55+ pay an entry fee to occupy a town house, condo, or apartment and to use amenities and
programming on the campus. Priority access to continuing care options, like assisted living and memory care, is included. In addition to the entry fee, a monthly fee is charged to cover
maintenance and other expenses. The development may or may not offer a refund of a percentage of the entry fee when a person moves out or passes away.
Independent Senior Apartments
Individuals 55+ pay a monthly fee to live independently in an apartment with the security, companionship, and convenience of community living. Meals, housekeeping, and organized social programs, as well as priority access to continuing care options, may be included in the monthly fee.
• Subsidized or Section 8 (Housing Choice Voucher program). A person whose income is below 50 percent of the area median income pays 30 to 40 percent of their adjusted income for rent. The balance is subsidized by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
• Affordable or Section 42 (LowIncome Housing Tax Credit program). A person’s rent is dependent on household size and is not a percentage of income. Income is only used to determine eligibility and must be recertified each year.
Assisted Living Residences
In Wisconsin, this term is used to describe residential care apartment complexes (RCACs), community-based residential facilities (CBRFs), and adult family homes (AFH).
• RCAC. Those 55+ pay a base monthly fee for an apartment that can provide up to 28 hours per week of supportive services, such as meals, health monitoring, medication management, housekeeping, etc. RCACs are not recommended for those with dementia or health challenges requiring more in-depth monitoring.
• CBRF. Those 55+ pay a base monthly fee for an apartment that includes care staff available 24/7, meals, laundry, housekeeping, medication management, and up to three hours per week of skilled nursing care.
• AFH. Those 55+ pay a monthly fee to live in a small residential facility, often a private home. The base monthly fee includes care staff available 24/7, meals, laundry, housekeeping, medication management, and up to seven hours per week of skilled nursing care.
Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC)
These campuses include all the living options shown on the senior living continuum, enabling those 55+ to get the care they need without having to move off the campus. A life lease or long-term contract between the
individual and the community may be required.
Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF)
These facilities provide licensed nursing services 24/7 for those who need rehabilitative care or medical services too complex to be handled by an RCAC, CBRF, or AFH.
Memory Care Residences
These secure CBRFs or SNFs include specialized care and programming for those with Alzheimer’s or other memory challenges.
For additional information about all aspects of life related to aging or living with a disability, including long-term care options and possible funding assistance, call or visit your county’s aging and disability resource center (ADRC).

Growing Old Together Ensuring Your Home Keeps Pace with You
by Kari Nichols
Our homes are more than just structures; they’re the backdrops to our lives, filled with memories and cozy spaces. But as we age and as our homes age along with us, maintaining that sense of comfort and security can require a little foresight and planning. In south central Wisconsin, where many homes were built decades ago, this is especially true. The good news is that by investing in strategic home improvements, we can ensure our homes remain havens of comfort, convenience, and value for years to come.
Many homes in our region, while charming, present challenges for seniors. Drafty rooms, outdated heating systems, and bathrooms that aren’t designed with mobility in mind can make daily life more difficult and costly. These issues aren’t just about convenience; they can significantly impact safety and financial well-being. Ignoring them could potentially jeopardize your ability to stay in the home you love.
Energy efficiency is a great place to start. Upgrading insulation, sealing air leaks, and installing a new high-efficiency HVAC system can significantly reduce your monthly utility bills. This is especially important for seniors who may be more sensitive to temperature fluctuations. A well-insulated home isn’t just more comfortable; it’s easier on the wallet. Project Home administers the weatherization program for Dane and Green Counties. Anyone can apply and be approved for energy assistance benefits through Energy Services, Inc. (esiwi.com) to qualify for free weatherization services through Project Home.
Bathrooms are another key area to consider. Falls are a major concern for seniors, and outdated bathrooms can pose significant risks. Installing grab bars, replacing a traditional bathtub with a walk-in shower or tub, raising the toilet seat height, and using nonslip flooring can dramatically improve safety and reduce the risk of accidents. These modifications aren’t just about addressing current needs; they’re about proactively creating a safer environment for the future.
Beyond the bathroom, consider broader accessibility modifications. Ramps, wider doorways, lever handles, and adjustable countertops can make a home more accessible and comfortable for everyone, regardless of mobility challenges. These changes can be invaluable for seniors, allowing them to move
around their homes with greater ease and independence.
It’s important to remember that strategic renovations, even those primarily focused on aging in place, can actually boost your home’s resale value. Well-maintained and updated homes are always more attractive to potential buyers. Think of it as preparing your home for its next chapter, even if you plan to stay put for years to come.
The most compelling argument for investing in your home is the ability to stay in the place you love surrounded by familiar comforts and cherished memories. By taking proactive steps to update and modify your home, you’re not just improving its physical structure, you’re investing in your independence, comfort, and peace of mind. It’s about ensuring that your home remains your haven—a place where you can age
gracefully and continue to thrive for years to come. Take a look around your home and figure out what changes you can make to ensure you and your home grow old together, safe and sound.
Kari Nichols is outreach manager at Project Home.

Project Home has multiple countyand city-funded major and minor home repair programs for low- to moderate-income residents in Dane and Green Counties which provide many essential home repairs and accessibility modifications. We also do major home rehabs, including replacing a roof and gutter system, windows and doors, and renovating a bathroom for accessibility. Visit projecthomewi .org/programs/home-repair/minor -home-repair to learn more about these programs and their qualification requirements. For those that may fall outside the qualifications of Project Home’s home repair and weatherization programs, you can still utilize our seasoned professionals through Optimus, our social enterprise program, as a contractor for many of these same services. All profits from Optimus projects will be funneled right back into Project Home’s programs that serve our neighbors in need.
